    Velen met Khusa’s gaze. For all his cold, glaring stares and counterfeit smiles, they could tell Khusa wasn’t all he was trying to imply. And that was because he’d made a fatal mistake. Underestimating Velen. “I’m clear.”

    Velen was seriously about to lose their stars. But they knew Khusa - or at least, his reputation. He was not going to let up. Velen was, after all, still the most dangerous person here, despite the man’s oversized ego. “Fine, you bleeding eyeslit.”

    Arkin leaned down to study the disassembled pieces. "Who- or whatever did this knew how to separate the two halves of the hydraulic suppressor properly. An ordinary layperson wouldn't know how to do that, especially with the left-right threaded screw in there."

    "Are you bleeding thick?" Velen could not stand the arrogance of this man. "I am a professional assassin. I will be declining your offer, and you will be coming with me. Try to run, and you're dead. And I know it's 'hard to kill you,' but I assure you, I am much, much more dangerous than you could ever be. Now follow me." They vaulted over the stone wall separating the manor from the rest of the world.

    Velen’s ears picked up the sound of shouting behind them. Stars! They didn’t have time to deal with Khusa’s haughty prattling right now - they had to go, and quickly. They couldn’t kill Khusa - as much as they wanted to, that would destroy all the connections they’d made in the Arcallan underground, and that wasn’t worth a quick escape (not to mention the sight of all that awful smugness leaving his eyes for good). They could knock him out, but he was too heavy for them to carry, and leaving him for the guards would equate to killing him in the eyes of the underground. There was only one option, and Velen didn’t like it in the slightest. “Guards coming. Let’s move.” They removed the knife from his throat, sheathing it, and snatched away the contract.
