  1. Sazed's Connection to both Preservation and to Ruin probably did that.
  2. I do! TPBM likes camping
  3. It had not been luck that stopped Espora from hearing Velen. Tip had silenced them, allowing them to run unheard. "Velen, I'm so sorry, I was late, I thought I could do it myself--" Espara's body collapsed, and Velen jumped back. They watched the light leave his eyes, then turned to Tip, who was blathering on about something like "thinking he could do it himself." "I don't want your apologies. Let's get out of here." Velen sheathed their knives and started running towards a window they could climb out of and make their escape. That had been sloppy - they wished they'd had time to do it better.
  4. When I was looking at some recent threads theorizing about Unity (basically the only time we ever hear it referenced is when Dalinar says "I am Unity!" at the climax of OB and Rayse says "we killed you!), I realized that I had my own theory - and that it also solved the problem of how Adonalsium was shattered. Before I continue, I would like to state that this isn't just a repeat of the things I said in the "death of Unity" thread - I crafted my thoughts into a full-fledged theory this time. 1. What is Unity? Let's get straight to the point - I believe that Unity is a lot like a Shard, but not - it's more like a binding agent. Like an egg used in baking. It isn't there to taste good, it's there to hold the things that taste good together. By this same logic, Unity is there to hold the Shards of Adonalsium together. I'll get to how it does this later, but the implications for this are pretty staggering. Firstly, it would explain how Adonalsium was shattered - Unity was somehow removed from the equation (e.g. its holder was killed), making Adonalsium's Investiture split into sixteen pieces. There are a couple different options for why it couldn't hold itself together. It could've been in 16 different pieces at the start, or (and I think this is the more interesting option) it could've been too big to hold itself together. Maybe Investiture works in weird ways on a large scale, and Adonalsium is just so Invested that it splits into sixteen different pieces. (I don't actually have any supporting evidence for this, but it sounds plausible). 2. How does it hold things together? I believe that Dalinar's "Bondsmith unchained" powers are, in reality, the part of Unity that he holds. I say "part" because I believe all three Bondsmiths hold a part of Unity. This feels like it could have some prevalence in KoW or back-half Stormlight, or in Era 4, where the reformation of Adonalsium seems like it'll be at least a small plot point. I think this because Dalinar's main power is Connection manipulation, and that's exactly what you'd need to hold Adonalsium together. This could also apply to Ishar's destruction of Ashyn - maybe he removed the Connection between the planet and its magnetic field, or its orbit, or something big. Backing up a little further, I think something from his experimentation allowed him to gain access to the remnants of Unity and somehow piece them back together - again, that's something we'll probably see when the time comes for Herald flashbacks. yeah that's basically it This is all just wiiiiiild speculation. But I think it makes at least a modicum of sense. Let me know your thoughts!
  5. Gets a pamphlet on managing anxiety Inserts xkcd comic.
  6. I don't think you can justify this being okay using the argument "it was self-defense." It was a premeditated murder (well, three), and you really can't justify that with "well, they attacked her first." Jasnah was thinking about attacking them before they even knew she existed. However, I do think you can make a different argument in Jasnah's case - that she saved more lives than she took. Those men were going to attack more women, and nothing was going to happen that stopped them from doing that. Shallan's life, as well as Jasnah's own, don't count because Jasnah knew she was putting both of them in danger. But I don't find it hard to believe that those men would have murdered more than four others if Jasnah hadn't done anything about it. I don't know, though. It's a complicated issue.
  7. *MILD SPOILERS FOR THE NEW DUNE MOVIE*

I just came from watching Dune! I was surprised by how faithful it was to the book - I thought it would try to incorporate some more action so that it would pander to the part of the audience a shorter attention span than those who read epic fantasy/sci-fi on a regular basis, but it didn't. Instead, it put dramatic music over every single scene, no matter how mundane. Every. Single. Scene. Ah well. I liked basically every other part of it, and I think Rebecca Ferguson deserves an Oscar for her portrayal of Jessica, especially the panic attack she had when she was waiting for the Reverend Mother to test Paul. I didn't like how Zendaya was hyped as such a big part of the movie, then barely appeared at all. Yeah, that's about it. I think it was a well-spent two-and-a-half hours.

Glad you liked it. Did you have a problem with the character names? I thought it was a little off that there were names like "Duncan Idaho" however far in the future this takes place. Even if it takes place in a completely different universe, like Star Wars, names like Paul and Jessica just seem off to me.

  8. Szeth screamed, murdering Was by turning the story into present tense.
  9. Yup! TPBM saw a movie today
  10. The innercab ground to a halt and Arkin stepped out, au boots clunking against the aerkai flooring. It had let au out closer to the reactor core than the left processor, since it didn't go through the main part of the engines, so au still had a bit of a walk ahead of au. Edit: @Ookla the Ferric

  13. Velen ran through the nobleman’s yard. They’d missed the change of the guard, so they had two options - do this quietly, or do it quickly and risk getting outnumbered. And they didn’t have time for the former. They reached the front door, which was guarded by two men, clad in silver armor, with a pin signifying their allegiance to the nobleman on their chest. Velen drew their knives, and while the guards fumbled with their swords, stabbed both of them in the throat. Velen removed their knives from the guards’ bodies, and sheathed the one in their left hand, pushing open the door. Four guards stood on the other side, but Velen made quick work of them, drawing three throwing knives with their left hand, and tossing them one by one at the spot between the three leftmost guards’ helmets and chestplates. Meanwhile, they ran at the fourth guard, stabbing him in his eye. They heard their throwing knives hit their marks with three wet thunks, and grinned. The reek of death beginning to take hold in the entrance hall, they ran towards where they knew Espara (Aspora?)’s rooms were. They heard guards yelling behind them, and ran faster. Stars damn you, Tip, they thought, drawing their left knife again. It was still coated in the first guard’s blood. They turned a corner, and saw Espara’s back. Thanking the stars that he’d not heard Velen coming, they leaped towards him and stabbed him in the back once, twice, three times with their right knife.
  14. I was speaking under the assumption that you were an elim.
  15. I'm in the "can't decide" camp myself. It's a complicated issue.

Well yeah, I'm expecting that. It only covers the first third of the first book of a series that's famous for being a slow-burn type thing.

  18. The interactions between Szeth and Lift at the climax of OB inspired it. I hope we get more of those in KoW. What's the story behind your Ookla name?
  19. Nope, candy TPBM is eating candy.
