  1. Warbreaker is before the Stormlight Archive, though we don't know exactly how long, it could be anywhere up to 300ish years, IIRC. The Coppermind has a chronology page if you're looking for more info about that, though!
  2. They do seem to be pretty close together in ancient Terris. According to Alendi, when his expedition comes across the black lake -- which is on the surface, not in a cavern like the Pits of Hathsin -- in the mountains, they're drawing close to the Well of Ascension. We know that the lake is Ruin's shardpool, which seems to place the two shardpools closer together than they are afterwards. Granted, the exact distances in both cases aren't really mentioned, so this is pretty much a lot of guesswork, but given that the Final Empire would be a fairly large place, the Pits of Hathsin don't seem to be that close to Luthadel, at least not IMO?
  3. Ruin's shardpool was moved beneath the Pits of Hathsin during Rashek's ascension, which is why the atium forms there, so I don't believe that the idea is invalidated by people in Luthadel not being born with Feruchemy, since both pools are no longer nearby. IMO this still makes the combined influence of both shardpools as good an explanation as any for the Terris people having the Feruchemy gene!
  4. As far as I'm aware, there's no WoB about why only the Terris had the Feruchemy gene, but if I had to guess, I'd say that their proximity to Ruin and Preservation's shardpools before Rashek's ascension might have something to do with it?
  5. I don't think it is in any articles at the moment, so that shouldn't be a problem.... A quick search indicated that it's only use on the Coppermind is only on talk pages and user pages.
  6. Ah, bury your gays is something different. It's killing off gay characters, not hiding that they're gay, if that's what you're replying to when you say "burying", Kingsdaughter. Anyway, the Dumbledore thing is a very good example for this, because there was ample opportunity for JK Rowling to actually include a confirmation in the books! It doesn't have to be super overt, nor distracting, nor does it require that every gay character be in a romantic relationship! With Dumbledore, there's exactly one line in the right scene that would have conveyed everything that needed to be conveyed, and fit in perfectly with the rest of the scene: The rest of that person's post goes into further detail, but simply put, the only reason that this ever is a problem is because creators-- for various reasons --tiptoe around same sex attraction and romance to a far greater degree than heterosexual attraction and romance. If you're hiding it, it's obvious in retrospect, especially in the Dumbledore example, because it will make things seem odd, and maybe even stilted, when (as per Dumbledore) the entire fate of their world can hinge on this sort of thing. Obviously, that won't apply to all, or maybe even many examples, but relationships are important, and stepping around a select few when they provide context for character development and plot progression is noticeably awkward writing.
  7. Because art doesn't exist in a vacuum. If you're writing a character who is fundamentally different from you in way that would cause other people to treat them differently/worse in real life, you have to do research to make sure that you're not inadvertently portraying certain groups of people offensively. Yeah, people are people and should be treated as such, but there are certain things you can do with straight and cisgender characters that you can't with others because in the context of the real world, that could be a stereotype or trope that proves harmful to minorities. Essentially, it is entirely that, yes, Brandon is an author who's never experienced those particular hardships in his life. Aside from that, there's also learning as much as you can so that you can do a character justice. Maybe you want the character to highlight differences by addressing something directly. For instance, Jasnah with her atheism. In that case, research will help you portray what a person with certain backgrounds or beliefs or whatever far more believably than otherwise.
  8. I'd say that the two of them being dead is also a detriment in this case. Much as I'd love it if they were, that carries some unfortunate implications, especially the last few weeks, since a major queer character got killed off in a fairly popular TV series which sparked plenty of outrage. What I'm saying is, if Ati and Leras were lovers, then I'd hope that Brandon at least introduces a couple other major queer characters or reveals that other major characters are queer, otherwise it's gonna come off poorly with the current state of queer representation in the Cosmere. Bury your gays is a nasty trope. u__u
  9. Brandon's said that it's possible to store more than the five traditional senses in a tinmind, but has not elaborated further.
  10. Green plants were a very foreign idea to the people of the Final Empire, so I don't think so. I expect that Rashek changed them during his Ascension to be more yellow/brown leaved, and if they continued to exist post-Catacendre -- which I believe is likely since Scadrial is the Cosmere's Earth-analogue -- Harmony probably changed them back to how they are for us on Earth.
  11. Aspens are a kind of tree. We have 'em here in the real world too. Given that... I'd wager that they did continue being a thing post-Catacendre.
  12. We don't know Rosharan views on it, though I wonder if their views on it aren't of much concern to a prince and a Knight Radiant if they cared to be in a relationship? Kadolin would be a great fit. even if it's unintended by Brandon -- in which case I'd invoke death of the author -- I've seen people cite plenty of textual evidence for at least Kaladin being attracted to Adolin. On top of that, it's a resolution to a love triangle that you never really see in any mainstream literature, so another point in their favour! It'd certainly be refreshing to read in a series like SA. If it comes to what's actually likely to canonically happen though... sadly I don't think Brandon would. I don't think he's prepared yet to [intentionally] write two characters as central as Kaladin and Adolin being queer and developing a romantic interest in one another.
  13. We listed them as two seperate characters because the only proof we have that they aren't is the shared name! Got nothing else on him/them. I've tried asking Brandon about Felt before on Reddit, but he ignored that question in favour of one of my others, so I get the feeling he's keeping that one to himself. Or at least, he was in mid-2015.
  14. There are at least female Inquisitors in the fight Vin had with them in Luthadel toward the end of the Hero of Ages, but Brandon believed that explicitly mentioning their gender during the fight would have been distracting. This doesn't mention whether or not there were female Inquisitors before the Collapse, so I guess it's still entirely possible that TLR was... more discriminatory than Ruin was in his selections here. Though, given his comment about how Inquisitors are hard to replace, you'd think he couldn't afford to be picky.
  15. The spike that grants intelligence is only one of several possible kandra Blessings, it's not a requirement that mistwraiths be given that particular Blessing to become kandra. I'm pretty sure that being granted any human attribute by Hemalurgy is all that's required to make a mistwraith sentient. So if you could give a kandra four copper spikes they'd be just as intelligent as a human with the same.
  16. There's one on the Coppermind: Hoid Galladon Demoux Nazh Nightblood Vasher Blunt Mraize Iyatil An unnamed Terriswoman who was on Nalthis Several unnamed Kandra There are others, but we've no confirmation on anyone else as far as I'm aware. The only other potential worldhopper in the books I can think of is Felt. There's no confirmation, however, or anything about him mentioned in any WoBs; all we have is the fact that the same name was used twice in two different series. (Stormlight and Mistborn.)
  17. We don't know, except that she was one of the Originators. Presumably, one of the crew members or someone related to them. Vin's out as a candidate, because she's the Ascendant Warrior. That leaves Allrianne, Tindwyl and Beldre as possibilities. Personally I think that it's not Allrianne. Considering that Lady Truth's only mention in the book (Shadows of Self) is from Wax's point of view, and he takes care to point out that Breeze is his ancestor on the previous line, my money's on Beldre.
  18. Oh, my bad! Should be fixed now, sorry. u__u
  19. Koloss-blooded are people born from koloss parents, but who haven't gotten Hemalurgic spikes. So, when koloss reproduce, the offspring is koloss-blooded. They can choose to accept spikes when they come of age, and become proper koloss, or they can leave. Outsiders who aren't koloss blooded can also accept the spikes to become koloss if they want. The only WOB I have for this is here, although I think there's more recent ones in text. As far as I'm aware it hasn't been transcribed, though. At 5:02 in the recording for the koloss question. All of which is a very different situation from kandra.... If there was a way to have kandra-blooded people, it wouldn't be at all analogous to koloss-blooded, IMO. EDIT: Fixed the link.
  20. @Witborn Stormlight/Elantris spoilers: Honestly my guess at this point is Cultivation, I just don't have much reasoning behind it, except for that one single line that Edwarn says about ash being a wonderful fertiliser. That's not really much evidence for anything, though.
  21. Yeah, we do. Everything we know about aluminum is on the Coppermind with a citation; here's the actual post confirming it though, emphasis mine:
  22. Ah, just so you know, there's a bunch of information -- which, as far as I'm aware, is everything we know about aluminium right now -- in its Coppermind article! I've nothing to contribute to your theory, but here's everything we know so far: Ralkalest is aluminium. It's unForgeable. It doesn't generate atium shadows. It interferes with Feruchemical healing when it is inside the wound. It has a similar effect on Allomantic pewter. An Allomancer could burn aluminium to heal the withering damage caused by Shades. It can't be Awakened, and could be used to prevent someone from Returning -- not just just stabbing them with some aluminium, however. Lastly, it is an Investiture sink and magically inert. There is actually one thing missing from the article which I just found now, though: I hope that helps!
  23. Small things first: One, Kaladin isn't 27 in Earth years. A Rosharan year is only roughly equivalent to 1.1 Earth year; Kaladin's almost 21 in Earth years; 20.9 years old to be specific. Two, in Game of Thrones, they specifically aged up the characters so that they could cast older actors for the roles. Here's the big thing, last because it's most important, and I really have to stress this: Alethi are not white. Brandon modeled them off Asian-Hawaiian people, but east Indian works too. It's not like it'd be hard to find actors that fit that description, there's a lot of people on the planet. This is important to note, because under-representation of people of colour is a problem in modern -- western -- media. If anyone adapted the Stormlight Archive into a visual medium and whitewashed the cast.... Eugh. It's honestly gross to think about. Regardless of how Hollywood might 'realistically' approach it, it's gross. Hollywood's methods tend to be pretty racist, so following their example is not a good thing, and we can do better!
  24. For the record, the Lord Ruler was aware of the Cosmere, he just didn't care about anything beyond Scadrial.
  25. ... Maybe it's because mildly autistic people exist, and their existence needn't be justified. Why bother writing non-autistic characters if them not being autistic isn't gonna be relevant?
