Why Radiants are incredibly overpowered, and Mistborn aren't.
therunner replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ehm, he basically summoned Phendora into a Shardblade, something Kalading could not until after swearing 4th Ideal. And Kaladin was basically as close to 4th as you could get (based on multiple comments). If Teft was not literally on the verge of swearing the 4th Oath then and there, then there is a big question of why he was able to summon his spren like that. I mean, throughout the book he repeatedly expressed the sentiment of the Oath to himself (forgiving himself for his parents, for his addictions, and resolving to do better). He was mentally in a good place to swear that Oath and mean it. And even if not on the spot, he clearly would not struggle with it to the extent of Kaladin. I mean there is literally this sentence in RoW: right before he summons Phendora as semi-blade. He is killed like ~20 seconds afterwards. He forgives himself, he accepts his failures, which seems to be the spirit of the 4th Oath, accepting that there will be failures along the path of trying to protect. Like Kal failed Tien and many others, like Teft failed his parents (in his eyes) and Bridge 4 (in Oathbringer), and himself (with firemoss, also Oathbringer). If anything for Teft the biggest hurdle was the 3rd Oath, where it took literal invasion of Urithiru for him to get his rust together. (huh, kinda like Kaladin and 4th Oath actually, never noticed that). We have limited information on Jasnah, which suggests it is not as difficult. We have limited information form example of Teft, who per the book was shortly before his dead closer to 4th Oath than Kaladin was (who never managed to summon Syl like that), and clearly did not have the same mental hangups like Kaladin (based on his internal voice in the rest of RoW). We also have WoBs that most Radiants are not as damaged as our batch, that Radiants can be ready to swear higher Oaths sooner than lower Oaths (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/482/#e15259), that Radiants could swear Oaths on the spot (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/498/#e15704). All of this suggests that higher Oaths are not necessarily more difficult than lower Oaths, and that Kaladin's struggle with 4th Oath is kind of an outlier. I mean, most of the Windrunners don't have survivor's guilt and clinical depression, unlike Kal. -
It should produce radiation, simply because of matter = energy = Investiture equivalency. We already know that Investiture can be converted to electromagnetic radiation (Lightweaving) so there is a pathway from Investiture to EM. Hence any annihilation of Investiture will by necessity produce radiation. Since Investiture can also create arbitrary matter (Soulcasting), annihilation will also produce large variatey of particles (i.e. alpha radiation, beta radiation, and quite possibly large variety of unstable isotopes). It is possible Brandon will handwave these issues, but this is what should happen. So...then no one actually has nukes? That time limit renders your entire premise invalid. You do realize they can send someone who does not know what they are delivering? Or just use catapult or something like that to lob it there? This is not a gunfight. Striking at rebellious people is rulership 101. If you don't do what they want, they will wipe you out. They don't need you, they need people in general, and any single person is largely replaceable.

Fair point on that we don't know her struggles, however she clearly did not require as much aid as Kaladin. Just re-read the scene with Renarin where it is suggested she figures out 4th Oath. Same for Teft. All this points at Kaladin being the outlier, rather than the usual experience. Even if every Oath is equally difficult, you would get the distribution where there is progressively less people at higher Oaths, so I don't really see reason for them to be 'difficult'. -
How bad would a Highstorm damage an Earth City?
therunner replied to JustQuestin2004's question in Cosmere Q&A
It would be worse than even Category 5 Hurricane, much worse. Hurricanes have forward speed typically in low tens of mph, and sustained winds in ~100 mphs. Highstorm has just forward speed at ~370 mph. It rips and carries large trees for hundreds of miles, and rips boulders from earth. If anything Highstorm is more like hurricane size tornado. So the devastation would be huge. -

Not true, It was difficult for Kaladin. Jasnah did not have such an issue as far as we know, and Teft was on the verge of swearing 4th Ideal before Kaladin, despite swearing 3rd quite a while after him. Per WoBs there can be people who can swear all 5 Oaths on the spot, there is no set 'difficulty' to them. Some will struggle with 2nd, some will struggle with 4th. Some will struggle with 1st, but once there will quickly get to 5th. -
No. Other explosives don't cause radiation sickness, anti-matter bombs do. Other explosives don't leave radioactive fallout (though antimatter bombs are better than regular nukes). It kinda does raise eyebrows, because the information is not as freely available as you would think (unless you are reasonably good at chemistry, which most are not), so you have to search for it. And buying certain stuff together can raise alarm. Not foolproof, but it is tracked. The fireball would outright vaporize surface area. No vegetation survives that. Those outside of vaporization zone would be uprooted and thrown some quite some distance, along with tones of rock. Very little vegetation sruvives that. The rest would get their DNA damaged by gamma radiation and rock for outer shell would not be thick enough. There is quite a power gap between fire and nuclear fireball and gamma radiation. Highstorms come only every 10 days. 10 days is a lot of time to burn. Famines are famously deadly. Why only 10 days? Fireworks are quite different caliber than nukes or anti-matter bombs. Not to mention, I do find such usage of explosive quite dumb , and pointlessly disruptive to nature. So your protection is that if someone tries to kill you, you kill yourself first? That's...not the best idea.

These are probably tapping weight and pushing on the bullet though, which he often does. So not something non-Crasher could replicate. Skybreakers are also hinted to be held back by their adherence to Nale's interpretation of the Oaths. Had they been allowed to explore their Oaths less rigidly there might be more. That would still be 1 in 20, quite common. And it is assuming that the ~100 Plated Windrunners seen in vision was all of them. What would be the reason? The Oaths don't vary in difficulty among orders, so one should not expect the percentages to change much (outside of some standard deviation). -
If you don't see insanity of using anti-matter bomb for 'fun', I don't think there is any sense in continuing this conversation. Testing something can at least provide you data you would not be able to obtain otherwise, so you can make argument from necessity. But you can have fun in other ways, that is the difference.
-
Are you doing it to test anything or for fun? Because your comment sounded like for fun. If you are testing, what are you testing? And why do you have to test on your own, instead of with others? Not alder, but same as I stated above. If basically everyone know how to make them, you get horribly powerful terrorist and break down of social order.

You realize that most cultures on planet are not as individualistic as americans are right? Rosharans don't really act particularly american in this regard. Most kinda understand that to get social cohesion you need rules, like on restricting weapons for example. Nuking things just for fun? Yeah, it kinda does. You would kill hundreds if not thousands of living creatures for 'fun'. Large populated areas exists, and so do crazy people. Yes you can, restrict knowledge and materials for making the bombs (vacuum tubes, plates -> which require hearing of Rhythms to create). At least half of Rosharan population can't read, much less understand how to make vacuum tubes, so you restrict that. But there are still such cities, and such cities would be natural targets. And since most government is centralized, with 10-11 bombs you could kill few percent of Roshar population, i.e. millions. So Kholinar had several hundred thousands, Azimir was larger (because unlike Alethi, Azish are good at supply lines), and war camps were 'far larger', so feasibly million. So, still 10 bombs could kill in neighborhood of ~5 million people? Shardblades have nothing on that level of destruction (not to mention that those bombs won/t just kill people but destroy building and environment). 1000 people in few hours, vs 100 000 in less then a second. There is a big difference here. So on one hand you claim people won't accept restriction on making nukes, but then you turn around and say millions of people will change their way of living? That is hilariously naive viewpoint. 1. Most of those guys won't be dead, because nobles have their own lands they govern and spend most of the time there. So while some will be killed, most won't, and they will start vying for power. 2. Neighboring countries will take advantage of the chaos to try and conquer those lands, since they are no longer protected by central force. If those are nuked too, you will have a lot of petty warlords rising up fighting to conquer as much as they can. Power vacuum never leads to improvement in the short term. 3. Instead of taxes they will pay 'tribute' to nearest warlord/bandit leader. How do you propose village like Heathstone protect themselves from someone like Amaram or Sadeas? So the lives won't go 'as normal', they will descend into the usual chaos of wars of conquest, with the usual r**e, pillage and burn. How do you think countries arose in the first place? There were bunch of villages, and someone said 'I'm gonna take that', and did not take no for an answer.

Yeah, she got carried away once and she was trying to take precautions against giving the secret away. She did not do it on purpose. So she would not just freely disseminate it. Raboniel hears Rhythms, is several millenia old, and has knowledge of realmatics. She is not counter argument that anyone can make it. Where? It is the person shaping the Investiture that provides Intent. At most we see Ruin provide Intent for Hemalurgy, however he was also manipulating/influencing the people involved. It is the same Tone, but not. It took what, weeks for Navani to figure out how to properly form Intent to form it? So, you agree with me that governments would make it illegal? Difficulty of enforcement changes nothing, see war on drugs. Sure, and so could do the spren to Roshar. MAD? This just gives them more reason to strictly regulate access to CR not less. Economies change, I doubt their economy was always based on interstellar trade. No we are not. It is like pipe bombs, good luck tracking the perpetrator. If somehow you knew who did then yes, we would have MAD. But the only reason MAD works is because everyone know who has bombs, and they can track if they used them or not. Plus you need time to react. If everyone can use them, and you cannot track if they used them or not, MAD is not applicable at all. How would you know who placed the bomb that killed you, much less react on it? Or if it killed your loved one, how would you know who placed it? Without that information you cannot respond, and hence MAD cannot function. So you will end up in world where nukes are go to weapons for terrorists, because unless they admit to it, it is difficult to trace it back to them. I think you will end up stunned then. Power alone cannot make up for e.g. inefficient design, or imperfect design.
-
And knowledge. Navani is dedicated to open knowledge, but she is not stupid. And you need to be able to hear Rhythms, and have proper Intent, neither of which is not confirmed to be possible for everyone. However, this has no bearing on the fact that any government could still make it illegal. Making bombs is feasible and yet is illegal in our world, same concept. In CR they are out of range of most people, and they can block access more easily (only 2 perpendicularities and 10 oathgates). CR is far safer for them than PR. Yes it would. Your scenario presupposes that anyone can create anti-stormlight and hence basically nukes. You get equivalent of lone wolf terrorist with nukes, of course they would use it. Official organizations would not, as others would immediately destroy them (for good reason), however when small groups of people can do that, that threat is meaningless, since they would be basically untraceable, since as you mention they just need vacuum tubes and instruments. Sibling was not fully corrupted, and I imagine the design could be improved upon. I doubt that Sibling is peak of what is possible with fabrials.

Discord is not stable as a concept, however I would argue it is more stable as di-Shard than Harmony. Or more precisely, both Harmony and Discord represent equilibria of di-Shardic system of Preservation and Ruin. However, where Harmony can be easily pushed outside of the balance by nearly any act (as we see in Era 2), it is unstable equilibrium which is reflected in its metal. On the other hand Discord is more natural state of the di-Shardic system, and hence is stable. After all, Preservation and Ruin cooperated to create Scadrial, and then where at war with each other for basically the rest of its history. That suggests that working with Harmony is difficult for them, and being Discordant is more natural for this pairing. To stormlight/anti-stormlight: Any government would try to limit availability of anti-stormlight would be restricted. I.e. its production would be regulated, and non-regulated production would be criminal offense. Failure of point 1 would result in: Decreased interaction of spren with Physical Realm (due to worry about being killed permanently), and hence decrease in Radiant numbers. Would allow for large scale terrorist attacks, which would inevitably lead to try to assert control. Lead to research into suppression fabrials, to create protected areas where such reaction is not possible (either via suppressing just anti-light if possible, or all light). Don't know what else.

Connection manipulation and becoming a "ghost"
therunner replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There isn't evidence either way, so both is just speculation at the moment. I think so, since I would say that Connection sort of has to belong to both parties (I have Connection to You, and You to me) and Ferring can affect only one of those. It would be difficult, but e.g. punching someone would probably be enough to break through storing Connection. It is not invisibility. -
Connection manipulation and becoming a "ghost"
therunner replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
No WoB, however it seems that every long range power work by Connection. At some point every magic is 'spiritual realm' shenanigans. You form Connections even just by meeting people, affecting someone with Rioting/Soothing would certainly form a Connection between the two. But if you are actively storing F-Duralumin, no Connection forms, however also no effect. Hmm, fair point. I think it is F-Duralumin basically all the time (perhaps selectively), and when someone forms a Connection with him despite that, he uses Rioting/Soothing to divert their attention. You might have to fully seal yourself in Aluminum, as while it has certain field effect, it does not seem to be too long range. So even full Aluminum suit would not protect you like that. @Tamriel Wolfsbaine You can push on all metals around, blanket effect and requiring Connection are not mutually exclusive. I don't think copperclouds would have any impact on F-Duralumin. I don't think that is the case, that sounds more like Connection manipulation on Bondsmith level than only Feruchemy. His apperance to people in cognitive realm are work of Harmony, not of Marsh's powers. -
The mortal most strongly Connected to remains of Honor is Dalinar, by the virtue of bonding Stormfather who actually is most of those remains. Taln would probably be second, though question is what Honor's death did to Oathpact. Oh yeah, most of the time from a couple of gems they would not be on that level. But like you say during Battle of Theylen fields, I wager most were in the ballpark of Returned. I'd say so, though question is how to infuse them with it properly. Kelsier had something done to him by Fuzz, so it is not as simple as taking a dip.

Connection manipulation and becoming a "ghost"
therunner replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think A-Zinc and F-Duralumin would not synergize well. To influence someone with A-Zinc you most likely need to have Connection to them (similar to how Steel/iron establish Connection between Allomancer and metal), and if you store that with F-Duralumin you can no longer influence them. The aura can also be hidden by investing Breaths deep within yourself like Vasher does throughout the entire Warbreaker, and on Roshar, so you don't need additional Invested Arts. Also, I think Marsh is hiding via F-Duralumin, and is using rioting and soothing only on those who start noticing him despite that (sooth their curiosity and riot something else). -
Do the Breaths lack Identity? While attached to Joe, they are sufficiently separated that e.g. Odium could attack Hoid's Breaths despite being prohibited from harming Hoid himself. That suggests that they are sufficiently separated that they don't count as part of the holder, and hence Feruchemy would not affect them. They would still be 'Joe's' Breaths, just stuck in a body of someone who is nearly no-one. If he then used them to Awaken something, they would become re-keyed as usual. He could possibly use them since 1) You cannot store 100% of any attribute, so some Identity remains. 2) He has remaining Connection to those Breaths (even dying and Returning allows you to recall and use your previous Breaths). Additionally, again you can retrieve Breathes from awakened non-sentient objects, and Awakeners holding Breathes are not that. I suspect there would be a difference. Even recalling Breaths from Lifeless is not possible. I don't agree. Strength is part of your spiritweb, Breaths are not. Hence there is a difference, and I don't think you can get unkeyed Breaths like this.

I have one possible counter-argument I have not seen above: Harmonium will stop being a thing in Era 3 (or prior), as a result of Harmony shifting to Discord. Now, it would have to broadly keep most of its characteristics or have them changed in such a way that technology it allows is still feasible, for example instead of 'harmonizing' with nearby Invested power to 'discordize' and instead output opposite power: e.g. steelpushing stored into Discordium-primer cube would become Ironpull, Storing into metalmind would become tapping that metalmind (if that is how planes function). Interestingly, this would allow non-Twinborn to access more than one power, provided they had access to such cubes (and that they exist ) Importantly, because of shift from unstable Harmony to stable Discord, 'Discordium' would no longer react the same way with Trellium. Though extant Harmonium would continue to exist, so it would become guarded resource.
-
I think that would not work for the simple reason that the Breaths are still attached to Joe, and Bob has no way to manipulate any aspect of Joe. Physical contact would not make Bob part of Joe, even when Joe is identity-less. Sure Joe is Identity less, but he is not awakened construct he is holding the Breaths.

I think Radiants should be below Heralds, if Heralds are holding to their Oaths. It seems that while Honor lived and they held to their Oaths they were basically sort of bonded to Honor, which is...yeah That said, when holding enough Stormlight I think both Heralds and Radiants are bumped up the ladder considerably. After all, Elantrians glow because they are non-stop channeling Dor, so Radiant holding enough Stormlight should bump them up to that realm. I think not to Elantrian level, since holding the power would have effects, but still beyond Mistborn etc., possibly to Fused level.

So they were, but that is not the source of the word or original meaning as you said, so my point still stands. And they were called atheists because they did not believe in other gods than Abrahamic god, and hence refused to make sacrifices for them. Since you know, christianity and judaism are both monotheistic, unlike Greek and Roman pantheons. So the meaning is still related to belief in existence of gods. How does denying their divinity not make her an atheist? Acknowledging powerful being exists is not the same thing as considering them a god. Shards are not gods. Some might consider them such, but they are not. And if she is denying their divinity, then she is an atheist because " atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist " , and that is exactly what she is rejecting. She is acknowledging powerful beings exists, but she does not consider them divine. Exactly, and Jasnah does not believe in existence of god or gods. Hence she is Atheist. Just because you consider Shards to be gods does not make them such. No, Jasnah knows Shards have will and power. Authority, she does not grant them. And having will, power and authority are not criteria to be a god, otherwise any king or noble could claim to be one. By your reasoning, humans are gods to ants (if ants could conceive of such), which is obviously wrong statement.
-
That was a bit of a tongue in cheek answer from Brandon. Not to mention he says maybe six Shards could do it, not that they actually could. But point taken. On the Nightblood, I would point out that the entire sword is awakened, not just the blade. And since even when fully sheathed the handle is not covered by Aluminum, it is not surprising that certain measure of power gets out. I think it will heal everything except near vicinity of the aluminum, since it won't be able to move or affect aluminum in any way. So shoot Gold compounder or Radiant in the brain stem with Aluminum bullet and they will simply die, because the power won't be able to heal the damage.
-
Investiture strength does not matter, not when it comes to Aluminum. As far as we know even Shards could not do anything to Aluminum (directly at least). It is inviolable even to Nightblood (its sheet is aluminum). Compounders nor Radiants are not even within the same neighborhood of power, so they won't affect it.
-
That dictionary meaning is an oversimplification of the word 'atheism' (and not the only one btw, valid interpretation is also e.g. the philosophical position stating that there is no supreme being or beings. ) Atheism is rather broad, and is simply rejection of existence of deities ('gods'). Deity is a supernatural being that is considered sacred. Jasnah comfortably fits with that since: She does not belief Shards (or Ado) are supernatural within context of Cosmere. She does not consider Shards (or Ado) to be sacred. More broadly, she generally believes that anything that is observerable can be explained. And that only observable things exist. So she does not belief in anything supernatural. Hence, she does not consider Shards or any other such being 'god'. Nor does she belief in God Beyond or any other such superstitions. She is as atheistic as they come. The fact that she uses the word 'god' in colloquial conversation/thought (to denote being of great power) has no bearing on her philosophical stances. Meeting an immortal who has powers and understanding far beyond you (and who is worshiped in some corners of your planet) you might sometimes think of him as a god in this colloquial sense, and yet logically understand that he is 'just' powerful. I am an atheist, and I still use words like 'god' or 'godlike', they are just words. Ashardic makes no sense as a term for her, she acknowledges existence of Shards, she just does not worship them (i.e. does not consider them deities). That is one of the factors that makes her atheist. No it does not mean that, It has everything to do with belief in existence of gods. Just look at the etymology and historical use Jasnah is secular and is repudiating existance of gods. She is atheist.
