They find them using some device on ships, not celestial navigation. They get general location by celestial navigation. And loosing them due to activity cannot be that common, as they don't seem to consider needing to sacrifice more to have 'backups'. Oh certainly it is Threnodite technology. I just propose it was something original settlers discovered after arriving on Canticle. They had to modify their technology to adapt for usage of sunhearts, so at some point they did have ability to conduct research. And the Chorus would not necessarily require fundamental research, if they have enough Realmatic knowledge it would be applied research. And as Sigzil noted, Beaconite engineers were better than he was, they just needed a push to start. So they have knowledge and capability to conduct research and their society is sufficiently specialized that they have dedicated engineers. They have everything they need to start proper research. And now they also have all the books Cinder King was hoarding, which should provide them with at least some information on Realmatics. Yeah, and single containment vessel can apparently contain large fraction of original settlers, and still can take more. So the capacity is quite large. No leakage has been noticed in the entire history of Canticle, so we can assume the leakage rate is minimal. Additionally, it is possible that shade caught in the sunlight would be destroyed by the large influx of Investiture.

Yeah, this book kinda complicated F-Iron again. But feeling increase in gravity makes sense, if you have more mass you will be more attracted to given planet, e.g. you will feel heavier. This won't affect falling acceleration or rate, as those are independent of mass (if you can neglect air resistance). So this part still makes sense with regular F-Iron. Yeah, this is the problematic part. But issue is larger, because in Era 1, Sazed had to tap F-Pewter to be able to move after tapping F-Iron, and specifically mentioned it. So in Era 1 F-Iron didn't increase strength to handle the larger mass, only in Era 2 did that start to happen (IRL I think it is because Brandon realized that without that side-effect F-Iron is pretty much useless power). But this device acts like Era 1 F-Iron. But yeah, the fact that Brandon actively avoided calling it Ironmind suggests this is something a bit more involved. So, it could be only Godmetal + Iron alloy, as the only regular alloy of Iron that is viable is Steel, and we know what that does. It might be Iron-Atium alloy, but frankly that feels like a waste of Atium, especially since Atium can be burned by anyone, and A-Electrum soldiers with Atium-Electrum alloy would be gigantic advantage.

Why would they be lost due to recharging them? Did I miss some implication? Destroyed or lost I grant you. People die anyway. If they can die in such a way that it helps their civilization, and they do it of their own will, I don't see that as bad. You can give them anesthesia, so it will be painless. No different from any other euthanasia we practice here on this very planet, except this will create some use. And we don't know why. Perhaps Chorus changed over time, or perhaps Chorus was not yet constructed and the containment technology was only discovered after they already started feeding people to sun. They can build more.
-
No probably not. All Nomad did was inform them that sacrificing people so that they can survive was not necessary. So they no longer have to kill people to power their society. But they are aware of this warning, and a new custom can be formed where people are given to the sun as a form of euthanasia. Still not ideal, but it prevents shades becoming an issue. Alternatively, the fact that Rebeke claims to have seen her brother within the Chorus implies that shades of people who die outside of sun are drawn to Chorus to be contained. So it is entirely possible that creation of Chorus eliminated the need for sacrifice as means of prevention of shades overrun. In this case, people of Canticle don't have to die by sun at all.

The Research Vessel and their Apathetic Condoning of Tyranny
therunner replied to Crimson_Russ's topic in Cosmere Discussion
No it did not, and no Cinder king was most certainly not right. Beaconites were organizing themselves quite well, and from what we know even prior to Cinder King they were surviving just fine. Cinder King was a petty cowardly bully, who was not interested in research or betterment of situation of his people. All he used was provided by Scadrians, he did not encourage research at all. And under Cinder King the same thing would have happened. He was not interested in research, only in bullying and in looking strong. And Scadrians gladly empowered him so long as they got what they wanted. Yeah, the people did need to unite, but not like that. And people do unite on voluntary basis, that is how early society worked. And especially when faced with common adversity, then uniting makes sense. Only an idiot (like Cinder King) would start fighting other people. No, which is why they should not have empowered Cinder King in the first place. They already did pick a Tyrant for another people, and then hid behind interplanetary law (which they probably broke when they provided him with knowledge of creating cinderhearts). Scadrians are quite hypocritical, providing people of Canticle with one discovery (cinderhearts and their creation) while holding back another (how to recharge sunhearts), while claiming they cannot interfere, after they already did. -
Sunlit Man Full Book Reactions (Cosmere Edition)
therunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, that also tripped me up, but I forgot about it, thanks for the reminder. Why Steelmind? Exactly as you say, Zinc or Copper would be more obvious choices. The explanation with FTL sounds reasonable. -
To Aux. I think that it is telling that he considers himself Knight Radiant. Sigzil thought that Aux was jokingly calling himself Knight and Sig his squire, but I think Aux meant it. He decided to be a Knight and to hopefully re-teach Sig to believe in the Oaths. And in the end he did, even though the cost was great. Truly a great spren and friend. We could all use someone like that.

Sunlit Man Full Book Reactions (Cosmere Edition)
therunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Ironminds slowed down in Era 1 (where you even needed to tap F-Pewter to just move), but Wax taps occasionally and does not have any trouble moving. In fact it is described that F-Iron strengthens the body so that you can still move (but you do not hit harder for magic reasons). So the fact that Sigzil is weighted down without any enhancements is significant. Good point, it is very 'Ghostblood' kind of approach. The fact that Kelsier's philosophy became so usual for them is not good. There is not much context needed, they empowered local tyrant so that he can kill thousands of people, enslave (and destroy minds) of dozens more, while the entire culture has to sacrifice some of their population just to survive. And they could have saved all of those people for who know how long. They could have allied with someone else, or stopped supporting Cinder King. Hell, near the end that is exactly what was offered to them, they simply did not care. Scadrial as a whole might be fighting against something worse, but that does not in any way excuse their actions here, especially since they could have helped with basically no impact to their own research. -
Implications on post Stormlight Archive events
therunner replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That book was explicitly called out as out-dated though. There are thousands of Blades (just Windrunners and Stonewards would have left ~2000 Blades at least), most are just either lost or hidden somewhere. But with access to Shadesmar it should be easier to locate them. -
When trying to figure how to Connect himself to Beaconites so he can siphon off Torment, Sigzil says this: So devices that manipulate Connection to greater extent than simply Linguistic Connection are rare. That implies that either F-Duralumin medallions are rare devices, or (more likely in my opinion) that F-Duralumin medallions are incapable of such manipulation. Whether regular F-Duralumin would be capable of it is a question, though I think not.

Implications on post Stormlight Archive events

Small correction, even Deadblades are impossible to carry of Roshar as of RoW. So existence of Rosharan mercanaries with Blade in fact implies that ability to get spren off-world is universal now, and not limited to selected group (or at least relatively easy to achieve). -
Perhaps some Bondsmith changed the Radiant Oaths. It was Ishar who bound Surgebinders originally, perhaps different Bondsmith can change the words of first Oath, so that Radiant now swears to be on side of Roshar in the war (which would be kinda ominous).
-
He could have find installations like the Scadrian one with Dor jars, or other planets colonies. He also could have filled himself up more on some of the easier planets, like Sel, and get enough for several jumps. The fact that he is not at zero after arrival on Canticle implies that either some Skips use less energy than 100% (in which case 100% is just threshold beyond which he can manipulate his Connection to that level), or that he had more than 100%. Or usually it takes longer for Night Brigade to find him, he did seem surprised they caught up so fast. Perhaps Canticle was relatively close to his previous location.

Implications on post Stormlight Archive events

Regarding Deadeyes, where did you take that from? Implication from Scadrians that Rosharan mercenaries can carry Blade and be un-Oathed? Another option outside of Ba-Ado-Mishram not being recovered is that even after BAM is restored, existing Deadeyes will remain deadeyes, unless healed by some further process. Perhaps the 'reverse Nahel bond' that Adolin perhaps starts is not very easy to replicate, or it can restore Deadeyes to a very limited extent. Also, Sigzil does not seem to have killed his previous spren, which means at that point BAM must have been restored. -
Yes compared to those, it is more powerful.. The bomb won't kill Vessel, neither will anti-Investiture weapon, nor nukes. The bomb or nukes won't destroy Thunderclast or Fused permanently. Anti-Investiture weapons will work on only one kind of being at a time. Nightblood is more destructive, it straight up annihilates on all three realms, and it does that to anything. And its more target destruction, a scalpel to the club of nukes. Shards won't be afraid of nukes, bombs or anti-Investiture. But they are afraid of Nightblood.
-
True, that could also be the case. But based on the limitations being of interest to Sanderson in his magic systems, I doubt anything as powerful as Nightblood is replicable feat. If it was, why is there no mention of anything like that in Sunlit Man? Nightbloods, even if a bit weaker would be incredibly desirable weapons. And with the relative abundance of Investiture, making dozens/hundreds of them should be viable.
-
True, but that is still 'just' a Dead Shardblade level. Living Shardblades are quite more versatile with their shapeshifting, especially if what we saw in Sunlit Man holds for other Radiants as well (e.g. provide Spren with enough Investiture and they can grow quite large). And Nightblood is in league of its own, far beyond all other Shardblades. And that fact suggests that there is something more going on.

Dawnshards (intents, torments and shards)
therunner replied to Gavtyven's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Interesting question. Rysn's Dawnshard is Change specifically, positive Change (demand things be better). So Torment would probably be that she cannot do things that she would perceive as leading to negative change in things. Which in theory could be as much as inability to start a fire, as it can be argued to be worsening wood into charcoal (wood has more uses than coal). -
He could have let himself die of heart disease. Elantrian immortality is among the most taxing in Cosmere, and you need Intent even for healing. Most of the time it is simple unconscious Intent, but if you want to die, truly on deepest level, I think healing would not work. Or he could have seen it as part of himself that should be there, so again healing would not work against it. Edit: Also, Radiants do die of old age, as do F-Gold Compounders (which is why TLM has to Compound Age). And yes, Elantrians don't have physical limitation on lifespan, but it is taxing. As there are in-world ways around it that we have seen, I don't see it as major problem. It is confirmed that Elantrians heal quickly, and can heal decapitation. They heal the same way as others who channel kinetic Investiture, as they don't heal without access to Dor as Reod demonstrates. Galladon even explicitly mentions that Elantrians can die if they want to. And also that his father was the only depressed Elantrian he knew of. If one should die because they wanted to, he would the most likely candidate. @NewGuy 16 Originally probably 1000 Breaths. However, 1000 Breaths is simply minimum to be used to Awaken metal, so Scholars could have used more than that. Additionally, Endowment was somehow involved in creation of Nigthblood, and she could have added basically any amount of Investiture. So we simply don't know how much Investiture Nightblood held at the start. We do know that he does consume Investiture into himself as well, as in now more Invested than when he was created. To the point where he is more Invested than Unmade by the time of RoW.
-
I agree with @Nameless* , I think Vasher was wrong (which makes it doubly tragic). At that point they did it only one time, so it makes sense why he would think other Awakened Blades would be on the same level, but he did not know Endowment involved herself in Nightblood's creation. We saw Vivenna's Blade, and it does not seem to be anywhere near what Nightblood can do. Which could be down to Intent, however Nightblood is simply too powerful to account for being replicable creation. He can kill Vessels. That is faaar from any other weapon we have seen, only Dawnshards are on that level.
-
Elantrians are Invested due to channeling Dor, not due to Innate Investiture. That is why Reod was possible, it blocked them from accessing Dor, which affected their bodies as they are dependent on it for a lot of its functioning. So they are more akin to Radiant holding a lot of Light, or Herald actively drawing Stormlight through Honorblade back when Honor was alive, than to Returned. Metals also don't let too much Investiture through. We see how much more powerful Allomancy is when fueled directly by Investiture, i.e. the same way as in Surgebinding. Elantrians heal the same way Radiants do, possibly even more so. They could heal even decapitation per WoB, but they probably have to have free access to Dor for that. I.e. be on Sel, or have some Connection hack to get Dor even from distance.
-
Elantrians also heal quickly, and can survive even decapitation (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/395/#e13084) So we have two groups: Stormlight, Voidlight, LIfelight, Charred, Elantrians (or Dor channelers in general) Returned, People of Higher Heightenings All people in group 1. have a lot of kinetic Investiture flowing through them. Notably Elantrians don't mention the urge to move, however Elantris in general has several 'inconsistencies' with later Investiture mechanics, as it was early work. However, it is said that being Elantrian is very taxing mentally, which could be due to similar effect (if it is not simply due to possibly living quite long). All people in group 2. have solely Static (or Innate) Investiture in them. Both groups show increased resilience to damage, improved endurance and strength. Per Sunlit Man, that is effect of being Invested by ~1000 BEUs. Hence, the simplest conclusion is that bags of *Light must be equivalent to that at minimum. But healing is active effect, and Breaths simply don't do stuff unless Commanded, and explicitly cannot be used to heal oneself (due to nature of Endowment). Which explains why the group 2. (consisting of only Breath holders) does not heal, despite being possibly Invested enough. Perhaps some Investiture are more efficient at achieving this particular effect, however I doubt that for some reason Rosharan Lights would be 100 times more potent in this regard. So either way, bags of Lights have to be at least 100 BEUs, though I maintain they would be closer to low thousands. @Nesh Regarding Pewter Allomancy, that is specifically Invested Art, which intentionally creates the effect. It is not a passive effect of holding Investiture.
-
Simple, Returned don't heal, Radiants do. On many occasions Radiants we seen in SA would have died were it not for Stormlight healing: Kal - in Highstorm, when doing the lashing kick Shallan - bolt through head They are more resistant to damage, not impervious. And technically we have lower bound, as the Stormlight must have at leas few hundred of BEUs. Upper bound is technically unknown, but probably is below Dor in density.
-
I must defend my assertion. I do agree that different Investiture have somewhat different effect, however this particular one has been now described within three distinct systems. On Scadrial, when Vin absorbed Mists, when Marasi held Bands, and when she used Dor. On Roshar whenver anyone holds Stormlight, Voidlight, Lifelight. On Canticle for Charred. In the first two cases, people hold Kinetic Investiture within themselves, so similar thing can be expected in case number 3. So I would posit this is a general effect of holding rather large amount of Kinetic Investiture. We don't see the same effect in normal Allomancers or Feruchemists, so clearly not any amount is sufficient. On Scadrial, and on Canticle the people describing those feelings were greatly Invested. On Canticle it is the Cinderhears, which holds between 2000-4000 BEUs. On Scadrial we don't have a handy way of quantifying it, but in Sunlit Man Nomad treats jar of Dor as sufficient to allow him to skip, i.e. it must be at least 20 000 BEUs. From what we see of the effect of using Dor to power Allomancy, it is not that different from using Surges, scale wise, and it runs out relatively fast. From the comparison to Dor it also suggests that bag of spheres of Stormlight, standard battle equipment for Radiants, should have several hundreds BEUs. Main problem for Radiants is that they leak, so they must use it fast before they run out. Charred don't have this issue, as the transformation (or the nature of the Investiture) is more 'sticky'. Roshar is the planet with probably easiest and most abundant source of Investiture, possibly only rivaled by Sel, so I don't think this is too much. Sidenote: Holding Static Investiture seems to lead to improved color perception and sense (effect of greater Heightening and of at least one Dawnshard).

Sunlit Man Full Book Reactions (Cosmere Edition)
therunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Interesting information on Dawnshards at least. And Night Brigade sounds terrifying, mercenary force capable of wiping out planets? Even if they are non-Shardworld or just minor-Shardworlds, that is some serious capability. And most importanly, Auxiliary was Highspren? What the hell happened to Nomad back on Roshar? Sigzil was Windrunner, he bonded Honorspren. But at some point he must have broken that Bond, became a Dawnshard, bonded Highspren and used that Dawnshard consuming his Highspren. If all that happens in SA5...holy expletive. Edit: And fragments of Shardplate? So he must have reached 4th Oath with Highspren. Seriously, what happened to him? And not just one Shardplate, he reached Windrunner Shardaplate too! If one person can reach 4th Oath in two Orders, it cannot be as unusual as some argue. Edit2: Zellion...huh. Did not expect that. Edit 3: Awakened Steelminds used as control systems, possibly even ship AI! That confirms that Metalminds can be Awakened, interesting. Edit 4: And Aux claims he was Knight Radiant and swore Oaths once. And at the same time he was Highspren also per his words. Could it really be that 5th Oath Radiant after dying can become Radiant Spren? That is basically the only explanation I can think of. Edit 5: Shardplate confirmed to maintain life support and temperature. And it also easily survived heat that melts metal and rocks with ease. Shardplate is more than durable enough to be relevant into Era 4. Interestingly, it seems that it was somehow modified by his Connection to the planet, as it is now black and trailing cinder. And glows orange-red, not the blues of Windrunners and Skybreakers. And is formed not from a single species of spren, but two. Edit 6: F-Iron Medallions seem to make user heavier, but don't make them stronger to compensate, like with Wax. Or Scadrians learned how to make Feruchemy grant only the attribute itself, and not the 'secondary' powers to compensate. Edit7: Wow what a ride. This might be among the most 'action-packed' Cosmere books. I look forward to future Cosmere, because it looks seriously fun, less 'cross-overy' like TLM and just like fully realized world. The short view of Night Brigade suggests a terryfying power. Hints at Scadrial-Roshar conflict as expected. There also seem to be some accords organized by Silverlight codifying inter-planetary law. Sidenote: Scadrians don't come off very well in this book (and in the SoTD), they are quite callous. I mean, working with Cinder King, and helping him actually create Charred? Come on, Vin, Elend, Wax and Wayne would not approve.
