Should be able to, yeah. And Ironpulling/Steelpushing should be effected similarly in space. More mass from an Ironmind could let you get more proportional control over a large object, like spacewalking to rearrange your ship. Might be weird and dangerous though, since when you reduce your weight you speed up as the conservation of momentum applies and even more drastically with no air resistance to slow you down.
-
I highly doubt it, as the Intent matters deeply for such a process. It might be possible to Hemalurgically spike a Breath in transfer however.
-
As far as I understand, the Investiture in both Metalminds should be identical, since iron Feruchemy actually stores mass instead of gravitational pull. In other words, if you travel to a place with less gravity and tap your Ironmind you will still be less heavy than on a planet with more gravity where you tapped the same amount.

Your force of character, determination, and will (It was a complement I tried to put into Cosmere-related joke form).

Friend, your moxie could supercharge an Electrummind to rival Nightblood

*cocks a brow* I see. Locking a ten millenia old master of arcane arts up and systematically ripping off chunks of his Spiritweb is totally safe, reliable, and cheap.

I kinda think capturing Hoid would be substantially harder.
-
This should be plausible enough, though part of me wonders how willing Hoid would be for such a process. Technically, even someone like Miles could be used as a functional spike factory should you give him enough gold, so any way to sufficiently charge gold Feruchemy can probably do the trick.

Ah, sorry. For some reason my brain scrambled it and thought you said you did think they were the same. Overall I don't think I'm convinced that spikes cannot be used to directly fuel Feruchemy, but I don't have definitive proof for my argument either, just hunches. I suppose even if spikes aren’t enough on their own to fuel a Metalmind there still may be possibility for spiking a rat or cockroach, then trying to siphon off of their new augmentations. Not super humane, but definitely less psychotic than using human hosts and turning them into Koloss or something worse. There still might be issues if you're trying to fuel human abilities with a very inhuman source, but since it's the human parts that are being drawn from on the constructs the Investiture harvested might still be compatable with human Feruchemists.

Given that Sazed has Invested him enough on occasion to visit souls passing into the Beyond, I suspect he's a Sliver, much like those that used the Well of Ascension. If this were the case and he died, he might be able to persist as a Cognitive Shadow like his brother. So the stories told about him may someday hold even more relevance, perhaps, as they may have the opportunity to skew what he truly is. Glad I could be helpful

I would agree that duralumin Allomancy must be less picky about what's who's in the Spiritweb, since both Dumad and Wax make use of the same spike to uber-Steelpush. Maybe Compounding is the odd one out as it's an actual hack trying to cross the wires of two separate systems rather than the natural state of either.

Thoughts manipulating Investiture is a Cosmere-wide phenomenon. Roshar simply has more free floating Investiture in the to be affected. Any Cognitive Shadow, such as Vasher or Kelsier, could be influenced by others' thoughts in time.

I'm curious, where did the age come up in Stormlight? I don't recall it being stated anywhere.
-
I know I came up with the idea before that you could theoretically hack Feruchemical health to grow new things (like Metalborn powers) by altering your memories (linked here: Permanent Spiritweb Modification via Feruchemy). But, how about something far, far simpler, yet possibly far more useful to the average person? Since old, lingering injuries or wounds already accepted by a person can't be healed simply due to their cognitive filter being wrong, could an Unsealed Coppermind simply whisk away months or years of dealing with a lost limb or cancerous growth, allowing for an Unsealed Goldmind or Radiant to patch it up? Then when they're done, just restore the siphoned off memories (and if you're worried about the restored memories tampering with the healing, you might want to wait a few weeks or months before doing so. The principal of old injuries sticking now becomes beneficial, as the healed body is now the new norm).

Feruchemicalities and Radiantalities.
Trusk'our replied to Through the Living Wrath's question in Cosmere Q&A
Good questions. We don't know a lot about Trueselves or the extent of their power yet, but we do know that simply blanking Identity and healing won't typically change how the healing works, as self-perception will still be there. As for storing only specific portions of Identity, maybe. It probably depends on whether an Identity can be broken down into smaller, discrete Feruchemical attributes (like senses or Connections) and how skilled the Trueself is. Personally, I'd guess that it is possible, but would take practice and a knowledge of what they were trying to do Realmatically. -
Not yet, but I hope to pre-order all three Scadrial books by the end of today. Also, how is it? If you've played D&D, how does it compare?
-
Oh boy. At this point it's kind of a long list. The Coppermind is an excellent resource for overviewing it all, and even has a lot of in-depth stuff. Just be careful, since leaps of logic do pop up. If there isn't a source backing up a claim, or that source doesn't actually line up with the Coppermind entry, it's wrong. But otherwise, it's great.

I made a thread on this topic before (linked here: What are the Heightenings?) but it's been a while and I have a new opinion thanks to the wonderful discussion and more evidence (big thanks especially to @Immortal Platypus for pointing out Dawnshard's interactions with Heightenings, @Treamayne for the idea of Heightenings being related to a Shard's specific flavor of Investiture, and @Duxredux for insights on Cognitive Shadows interacting with heightenings and Breaths being related to Dawnshards.) On Nalthis, we see that anyone holding enough Breath will begin to pick up new abilities, such as increased health, longevity, Lifesense, and can Command that Breath to Awaken things. They have upper thresholds for certain abilities and cannot increase them beyond a certain point. For example, while an Awakener's Lifesense is maxed out at the 4th Heightening, allowing them to sense individual blades of grass. But the Sibling shows a far, far more potent version of Lifesense despite not having any of Endowment's Investiture, detecting even microorganisms. We can also see passive benefits when other types of Investiture are held. Radiants (and presumably Fused) get heightened strength, speed, stamina, and require less oxygen. Elantrians hyped up on Dor either from Elantris's artificial enhancement or from drinking/absorbing it have increased speed, strength, and intellect. Canticle-ites show a Heightening effect if they absorb a lot of Investiture from Cinderhearts (or possibly each other, since they can give it or take it upon touch) such as greatly increased strength, durability, and speed (and health, as Rebeke mentions in passing). Dawnshards also exhibit Heightenings in their hosts, as do Dawnslivers, though it depends on the Dawnshard. Rysn showed Nalthian-like Investiture with increase color and pitch recognition and has a higher Lifesense, while Nomad has greatly increased strength (though only up to his threshold at 2,000 BEUs) and Connection manipulation (but only after exceeding 2,000 BEUs). It's also interesting to notice that nearly all Heightenings allow for an active expenditure of Investiture to regenerate except for Nalthian Awakening (we also haven't seen Rysn do this, who shares a lot with that specific type) and the natural Canticle-ites' Investiture. Though, these also have hard-wired powers on top of the extra Investiture, while each Breath mostly seems to be a package of free-floating Investiture bound by a Connection/Identity. Another fun effect unique to Fused, possibly related to Heightening effects, is that they have methods to use Voidlight without expending it as long as there is enough to begin with. Nomad also shows us that there is almost certainly no Heightening effect granted by hardwired abilities and powers, since cannibalizing his Torment gives him Investiture to re-Invest his Heightened athleticism. This could explain why no noticeable passive effects exist for powerful Invested like Elend or Radiants, why TLR still needed Atium Compounding to stay youthful, or why Bondsmiths aren't really superhuman unless they actively are drawing in Light despite being bonded to very, very highly Invested Spren. My end thought then, is that "Heightenings" are the standard effects created by holding any free Investiture. You don't need to give them an extra Command or have Intent for this, since that's already there as dictated by their Shard's Intent (and quite possibly the contents of your own Spiritweb if you already have a hardcoded power). They have upper thresholds for certain abilities, not always because they cannot grant more to that specific attribute, but because they're biased to fulfill certain effects first, then bleed over into other areas- for example, a Preservation aligned Heightening might be particularly good for longevity, while a Ruin aligned Heightening might take a lot more Investiture to gain that ability, if at all, despite the physics of the Cosmere allowing that use. Heightenings don't manifest as often for Invested because they only show up when not given another directive such as when tied up in the Spiritweb's attributes or existing as a power, and since many Shards' magic systems evolve based on what planet they're one, there often isn't an opportunity for raw, primal Heightenings to pop up (i.e. getting more Preservation aligned Investiture will typically make you an Allomancer, since that is what Scadrial's Realmatic interactions allow). In other words, I think Heightenings are a Cosmere-wide phenomenon related to holding raw, free-floating Investiture. Some systems like Awakening just branch off of it, like how other Shards' systems of Lightweaving, Microkinesis, or Hemalurgy do. The one weird thing that seems to contradict this somewhat is Cognitive Shadows and Spren. Fused, Heralds, Yoki-hijo, and Radiant Spren don't really exhibit Heightenings despite being highly Invested, though Returned do with their Divine Breath. One plausible explanation could be that their Investiture, while substantial, is not free-floating but tied up in other functions like granting them Surgebinding (Fused and Truespren), binding Spirits (Yoki-hijo), or Heraldic abilities. It could also be that some of their control over spiritual attributes is a result of hardcoded Investiture (explored here: Cognitive Shadow Parallels). Under this logic, Returned would still express Heightenings because their Divine Breath does not serve an extra function beyond stappling them to the PR. Like standard Breath, its extra boons are a passive result of holding Investiture with less direction.

Ah, sorry. I have a tendency to let the insane voices in my head froth out before I can process them into a coherent statement. Since it seems like all Invested powers require some cooperation or unity of Identity to be used, Hemalurgy by that logic must require some extra weirdness with Identity to get it to work, especially as it almost always comes with its own. If Hemalurgic spikes overwrite the recipient's Identity, splicing in their own, that would certainly explain why the person could use them- they're now part of the Hemalurgist, even if they had to forcefully make a change to their Spiritweb/Identity to do so. In the scenario with the two spikes, let's say one carrying Allomantic pewter and the other Feruchemical pewter, the artificial Twinborn has their Identity overwritten enough to access the contents of both spikes. However, the weird thing is that the spikes don't change each other's Identities despite both being spliced into the same Spiritweb. The Identity of the original Feruchemist doesn't align with that of the original Allomancer, so they can't Compound pewter despite the Hemalurgist now holding a portion of Identity from both spikes.

Good question. I'm honestly not sure if he could use it. It seems very likely he can use Unsealed Metalminds, but they provide not only the fuel, but the ability to utilize that fuel in a meaningful way too. I'd guess he could not use Dor in his current state, not without extra aid, like from a medallion (which from what we've seen still seems largely limited). But Dor is still very useful for his Invested agents, and Kelsier is a team player, at least when he feels so inclined. Having the best Forger alive juiced up on concentrated Investiture is a tool anybody would kill to have. What I'm most curious about is why he didn't think to give Marsh a bit of Dor to fuel his depleting Atiummind. Perhaps Marsh just didn't let on? Or, maybe Feruchemy needs an extra step before using an external source?

Heralds infrequently apply some of their greater abilities according to Nale, which from what I read implied their greatly increased physical speed. Going back to RoW, I just noticed that Kaladin similarly shows some above-standard physical speed when Odium's influence comes upon him. This makes me think that there's a good reason Heralds rarely use their unique powers- they're probably drawing on Odium's seeds of Investiture they had before becoming Honor's champions. Also, funnily enough, this might give Kaladin as a Herald a similar binding advantage on Odium that the other Heralds had due to their original Surgebinding abilities.
-
That explanation would also make sense. If a person received two Hemalurgic spikes (or one if they're already Metalborn), each bearing an Allomantic or Feruchemical power of the same metal, it would should make their Spiritweb compatible with the new abilities. I suppose the weirdness then would be that the spikes don't change other spikes' Identity, so there's some layer of separation going on not present in natural Allomancy or Feruchemy.

It's 17th Shard slang for "Manifestation of Investiture" or a magic system in the Cosmere, like Allomancy, Surgebinding, or Awakening. Also, welcome to the Shard!

I think Identity itself can have a couple distinct components relating to who a given Investiture belongs to. A person's Investiture obviously has an Identity keyed to them, as we see with Metalminds and Hemalurgic spikes. However, I suspect that Investiture is also keyed to the Shard (and possibly planet). In WaT one of the Ghostblood agents mentions that they now know Investiture can be blanked of its Identity, presumably relating to Navani's creation of Warlight, which relies on changing two Lights' Tones to make them compatible. Given my previous theory on what Identity is, and how it's essentially a personalized Rhythm/Tone of sorts, I think that an Investiture's Tone is a reflection of its shared Identity with its parent Shard. I think so. I'm guessing that's why Ruin couldn't sense his lost Atium, though it still was of his essence- a fully severed Connection and Identity caused by Preservation's meddling, but not a true loss of Intent. You have a good point. Returned would have a harder time bonding a Spren, mostly because they're already Invested. So, it may be less a matter of a true Resonance in how the power becomes accessible to a person. There is also the matter of Twinborn having access to two separate powers, but those powers must be used before a Resonance can be formed. So, perhaps bonding isn't quite like an actual Resonance, though I still think Identities get tweaked to facilitate them. That's an interesting thought regarding a natural Allomancer trying to Compound with stolen Feruchemy. Though, the original Feruchemist's Identity is still present and is mooshed together with the Hemalurgist's, preventing it from being tapped by someone sharing the old Feruchemist's Identity. I don't think this would allow Compounding then, because Identity is still interfering to a large degree.

It probably depends a lot on perception and whether a Cognitive Shadow can be "healed" back to their old body, or if like a Returned they'd need something to anchor them artificially. Thinking on it further, I'll actually change my stance, since a CS is basically a Spren- their Connections to the Realms have been replaced with Investiture, so having a body is probably not their natural state. As such, a Returned shouldn't be able to be healed back to their body. The Divine Breath staples them to it. So no, I don't think a Returned trying to heal Kelsier would circumvent his limitations.
