  1. Have I ever been? He wonders. Probably shouldn't say that one out loud. "The implant's glitching. I don't know what to do, it's activating, and I can't stop it." Too much panic in his voice. Got to cut back on that.
  2. Martin slumps a bit, his head pounding. Without the adrenaline of a fight, the numbness that precedes implant activation is creeping over his limbs. "I know how this goes," he says. Why does he sound so conversational?
  3. "Can't fight." If he can't fight, then what does he do? "I need..." Say it. "I need out." I need it out.
  4. Martin stares at him. "Something's not right. I can't - it's not - " It shouldn't be doing this.
  5. Martin grabs the knife he had dropped, forcing himself past the pain it causes. He needs to get out of this fight before he gets someone hurt.
  6. For a single, horrifying second, he can't breathe. He can't breathe. There's a faraway noise, and he realizes he's dropped a knife, clutching at the back of his neck. Air rushes back. He looks at... what's his name? Should he know it? You good? No. No, he's not. "Compromised," he rasps.
  7. I think my parents did, but the trouble is, our family is big enough that there isn't enough time to focus on training, not with our age range.
  8. Martin stumbles, nearly hits the ground, before coming to a stop near Fadran and holding his ground. Something is wrong. He feels almost numb, like he does when the implant activates. But it can't be, it's designed to recognize... He keeps fighting.
  9. Martin looks at the massive creature. "That's above my pay grade." He focuses on the red creatures, kicking several of the small green ones as he does.
  10. There are sentences that you never want to hear your parents say. One of them is 'we need to have a talk.' We have to take our dog back to the shelter. She's got aggressive tendencies, and we've done everything we can, everything, and nothing has worked. So for safety, she has to go. There are people who can help with this, but not while she's in a big family. I feel like I'm half an inch behind myself, and a little up and to the left.
  11. Martin swears and snatches the blade out of the air, spinning it into his preferred grip. It's well weighted, but he is going to have words with someone about throwing things like that without warning. Dual wielding again feels right. He falls back into the fight. One move. Then the next. His head aches.
  12. "Thanks!" Martin yells, dropping to one knee and grabbing another stone, throwing it with all his strength into the ankle-looking joint of one of the creatures.
  13. Martin stabs and ducks, cutting through the creatures towards Fadran. Stupid. Why did he try to do this by himself?
  14. Martin tips his head to one side and draws his knife. The movement sends a spike of pain along his spine, and then he charges forward, stabbing at the body of the first red creature he comes to.
  15. Well, finished The Shadow Rising. Overall, pretty good. I'm excited to read the next one in a couple weeks. I'm going to read Push by Eve Silver and Pretties by Scott Westerfeld.
  16. Martin pitches the rock at one of the creatures, aiming to hit it in the eye. @xinoehp512
  17. Martin hears screaming, but keeps his eyes on the creatures. If they breathe fire, he'll need to stay away from their mouths. Reflexes will be key. He scuffs the ground by his feet, looking for a stone, and when he finds one, slowly crouches to pick it up and hold it in one hand.
  18. Martin watches Fadran out of the corner of his eye, not quite sure what to do. The ache is making it hard to make the usual split-second decisions he makes on the field.
  19. Martin gets up and walks over, keeping a healthy distance from the magic users doing magic to something made with magic. "That's new." He rubs irritably at the ache in his neck.
