Sand Mastery has been described by Khriss in Arcarnum Unbounded as the user forging a brief Cognitive bond with the sand, so in this theory it would fit along the lines of using innate Investiture in the user to create a link between the cognitive aspects of the sand and the user in order to access the stored Investiture in the sand to act upon the Physical Realm

Is Adolin Edgedancer material?
Realmatic Shadow replied to Shardsplinter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He was very much ignored. They saw a darkeyes challenging a lighteyes and let their prejudice decide for them without even listening to him. It may not be a typical argument of ignored, but just as the oaths can be interpreted in different manners, so too can these scenes. They're not stating that the oaths are arbitrary, just that they are not hard and fast rules. One Edgedancer could see 'remembering those who have been forgotten' as remembering all the beggars and such in the slums, another take it to represent those who have died in jails without receiving any judgement. Just like that, one Edgedancer could see what happened to Kal as simply what happens when you step out of line, and still be entirely within their oaths, but another might see Kaladin as having been ignored by the lighteyes and therefore feel that theirs oaths oblige them to help him. -
I think this very much has to do with the Heralds' nature as Cognitive Shadows, and the direct Connection they had to Honor through the Oathpact. Maybe all this means the section of the spiritweb that causes lighteyed-ness can't be changed in Heralds?

That does seem to work for the Parsh, or it could be a more mundane one where they learnt the language by being around others that spoke it for so long, hearing as they speak, they were just too slow of mind (due to their lack of Identity) to talk properly. I believe that it is likely that, while over the past few thousand years the human languages have drifted, but not exceptionally far from what they may have seen in historic Desolations. This would explain the broken manner of speech many of them are seen as having, maybe they once could all speak perfectly? And in modern day only the most mentally capable of them after all this time were able to adapt to the variations in the language quickly?

People have an issue with this usage of 'it' as it has had a more common association with referral to objects and (sometimes) animals. Due to this common association, it is seen as dehumanizing by many when referred to using 'it', whereas the term 'them' has always been used to refer to people, and was used by many prominent historical authors to refer to ambiguously gendered characters. Overall the more commonly used word in modern times is 'them' for gender neutral singular when referring to people, and as such you might as well just use it. Language is more about everyone understanding each other, not following strict language rules that few people actually know (see the word 'Simp', which has no real definition as of yet, but many individuals on the internet understand it. Is it a real word?)

Is Adolin Edgedancer material?
Realmatic Shadow replied to Shardsplinter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He is somewhat practicing the Second Ideal of The Edgedancers ("I will remember those who have been forgotten" - Lift's Second Ideal) in remembering someone (Maya) who has been forgotten ('dead' for hundreds of years). This may not be enough to actually swear the oath, but it is a good start towards it in my opinion -
Wild theory with absolutely no backing: During Kal's stint as a surgeon (or permanent reassignment, we don't know how it will go yet), he will cause an Cultivationspren to become interested in him, and we see some juicy interactions between his two spren as he advances his oaths in the second order! There is no evidence for this occurring, nor an foreshadowing, but we can dream

Is Adolin Edgedancer material?

I think this could also be a way for Brandon to show that, even if you don't fit the order perfectly (or maybe would fit another order better, but that's a large debate already), if you have a spren interested in a bond with you, it can still work out. And as others have said, Radiance is the journey, not the beginning. Not everyone is going to start as the perfect Radiant when they first bond, but they can grow into it. -
Stormlight to electricity conversion anyone? A way for them to kick-start some research into electricity and its applications?

Brandon has mentioned that Adonalsium played a large part in the formation of the Rosharan system...

Formless Theories (Chapter 9 spoilers)
Realmatic Shadow replied to NateTheMilk's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, this WOB confirms that Lin Davar is indeed her father, but that doesn't necessarily preclude your theory, though there is certainly an implication there. -
This certainly works much better than my silly idea, and could build upon the idea that Cultivation appears to have much more stake in this Desolation compared to previous ones, with characters such as Dalinar and Taravangian already having had the direct influence of Cultivation on them. The same way that the Stormfather's bond is different now that Honor is gone, maybe with Cultivation being more active in the fight the Nightwatcher's bond and the associated powers differ from what they were historically?
-
What boon would he seek though, that he may or may not get alongside the bond? Maybe he tries to get the ability to move into a form that looks very close to humans, or something like that to try and fit in. Maybe just to be made into a human as a whole? It would be interesting to have a Listener turned human character, and how they would reflect on the differences between the two species.

I wouldn't have thought of the implication that, before a certain level of development, Cosmere magic would consider a fetus part of the mother and not a seperate being. This does make a lot of sense, and you could probably use this to estimate how certain individuals in the Cosmere would view the abortion debates. To them, there is a very obvious and clear distinction of when they become a separate individual. This would line up quite well with the impression many people have of her not being ready for a child, and so her cognitive ideal would reflect that, causing her to have what would amount to stormlight contraceptives. There may be a scene in book where Adolin and Shallan seek counselling about the apparent infertility, and someone who has a bit more knowledge of how stormlight healing works (maybe Navani or Dalinar?) puts two and two together and can therefore raise the theological debate of how moral that is.

The Shard of Ingenuity, Fabrials and the Sibling
Realmatic Shadow replied to a topic in Cosmere Discussion
I would very much associate Stonewards directly with Honor, with a key piece of their ideology seeming to be a 'noble sacrifice'. Lightweavers also very strongly resemble Cultivation, with a central piece of their 'oaths' being about personal growth and understanding. On the overall theory, I quite like it, but I'm not convinced that Brando Sando would come out of nowhere like that with an entirely new Shard being involved on top of the three we know of right now. Though Hoid's Letters could be the hints for this we aren't seeing fully.- 19 replies

Shallan's Childhood Secret (Theory Time!)
Realmatic Shadow replied to Harfyn's topic in Stormlight Archive
While this is a very interesting theory, I don't think there is very much evidence or foreshadowing for it in the story yet. Could totally prove me wrong though, or we could get massive hints in the first parts of RoW that lead into this, so by no means is it a dead theory -
Tanavast walks into the bar "Well about that beer I owe you..."
-
I agree with you massively there! Personally, I don't think Navani fits well enough to awaken the Sibling, but would still be acknowledged that, in another time, she would've been on the short-list for a bond.

I'd thought of it more along the line of inhibiting the use of kinetic investiture within the range, where lashings and maybe even sprenblades being summoned qualify under that, but the stormlight in the radiant is more similar to stormlight in a gemstone, and doesn't fall under that jurisdiction.

We do know that Jasnah has been interrogating Ash and (mayble) Taln, so it isn't exactly far fetched that they have discovered the true names of the Heralds, though it is a little unlikely that their expletives would change that quickly

What if that large black monolith in the distance is the cognitive representation of the tower of Urithiru? We already know a lot is up with the tower already, maybe the way the Sibling inhabited the tower and powered the functions of it has caused some major differences in how it is represented in the Cognitive Realm?

Rhythm of War: Chapter 6 Observations
Realmatic Shadow replied to Clarity-Art's topic in Stormlight Archive
The Sibling could also be slumbering somewhere distant, where even if Navani would be someone that would have been bonded in other times, they won't be in current time due to the distance. Also leads to the possibility of the Sibling eventually meeting Navani and commenting along the lines of "Now this is someone I would've bonded with, in another time" -
This would make sense, when you're sleeping you still have some very basic functions that work (breathing, hear beating, digestion), and maybe the same is true for the Sibling, in that the most basic functions (increased air pressure, maybe some others we haven't noted) are still operational, but anything higher than that requires them to be woken from their slumber
