brandon sanderson Brandon Sanderson Fan Club
The Awakened Salad replied to I Am A Fish's topic in Social Groups, Clans, & Guilds
I can’t believe there are other people here who have read Brandon Sanderson! I thought I was the only one! Never expected to find other fans on this baking forum, 17th Scone. -

the fellowship of the thing The Mishmash Inn (Retired)
The Awakened Salad replied to Channelknight Fadran's topic in Roleplaying
Mira leaned forwards unconsciously as he spoke, absorbing this new information. Hidden parts of the inn? Portal rooms? And factions too? At least this inn would never be boring. She fought the impulse to ask too many questions, worried about seeming too eager. When he finished speaking, she leaned back, as if in thought. “That would depend,” she said at last. “How much do you charge?” -

“I found a secret passage,” Mira replied, sliding into the seat opposite him. Hopefully he didn’t mind. “So, I’m guessing this inn has more Secrets than just some hidden tunnels?” -

Mira entered the Cafe/Breakfast Buffet and scanned the room for the man she had spoken to before. -

Mira winced as the scent of chlorine assailed her senses. Of course the secret passage had led to a pool, of all places. She stuffed her flashlight into her back pocket and stepped onto the pool deck, trying to avoid being splashed. That man from the Café... where was he? -

Warning: Bad pick up lines ahead. Proceed with caution. Are you a photographer? Because I can picture the two of us together. You look as magical as a fairytale, and I’d love to be in your story. You must be a lurcher, because I feel Pulled towards you.

Mira peered down into the dark passage. This wasn’t exactly what she’d been expecting. What kind of inn had secret passages connected to its rooms? Ones with Secrets, she thought, mind already racing with possibilities. A flicker of doubt crossed her mind, but she shoved it down, instead pulling on her boots and grabbing a flashlight from one of her bags. She switched it on, the small beam barely cutting through the darkness, and ventured into the passage. -

(Ir)rational Fears
The Awakened Salad replied to Truthless of Shinovar's topic in General Discussion
That loud gurgling sound my bath makes whenever it sucks up the last bit of water. It just sounds so angry. Or like it’s screaming out in pain. *shivers* I DO THIS, but also whenever the lights turn yellow but there’s not enough time to slow down I go mwahaha, you can’t stop me! I defy you, traffic lights! ...I’ve been told I’m entertaining to drive with. ^Also me I’m quite shy and would probably just stand in the corner or something. Though I think if any meeting were to happen it’d be at a release party or signing, so everyone might be excited enough that nerves lessen a bit? -
AU where Shai is a chef and Ashravan is a really picky eater. The whole story is just Shai trying to come up with a recipe that he likes.

Halfway to the painting, Mira stopped. Something about that drawer wasn’t right. She returned to it and opened it again. Who would need a something this large? She placed the flower in the drawer, so she wouldn’t lose it, and began searching for a false bottom. -

I’m the complete opposite, actually. I don’t worldbuild at all before I start writing. I have the general idea of where the characters are, but I mostly make it up as I go along. If I come across something that requires more worldbuilding, I usually just leave a note and come back to it later. Not saying you should use my method, it has so many drawbacks, but I just found it interesting our approaches are so different. -
Fire Emblem Three Houses
The Awakened Salad replied to Pathfinder's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Yeah, I was coming at it from an AU sort of perspective, if that makes sense. I like finding common threads and similarities between characters and trying to fit them into each other’s worlds. But I agree with what you’re saying. ...okay now I want to see those two interact/fight. -

Whatever this Secret is, Mira thought. It better be good. She shut the drawer and stalked over to the painting again, this time inspecting the front. -
General Writing Discussion
The Awakened Salad replied to The Awakened Salad's topic in Creator's Corner
I agree, I was mostly referring to those block moments when I wrote that. They can be incredibly frustrating. Additionally, for me, it’s my inner critic that stops me from enjoying writing some of the time. I’ve gotten pretty good at ignoring it, but it comes back every once in a while to make me question myself. It’s hard to pick just one, but right now I’d say the freedom it gives me. Writing is how I express myself, so it can be extremely cathartic to just sit down and write. It makes me happy. See above answer. I also have things to say, and I like saying them through stories. I definitely lean more towards soft magic. I like reading about hard magic, but I find soft magic so much more malleable and full of wonder. It depends on the story as to how soft the magic is, though. Fantasy (though that’s probably obvious ). Where else can I write about dragons and magical forests? I’m pressed for time so I’ll have to stop now, but I’ll probably finish answering these later. -
I just realised we don’t have a thread to talk about writing in general (unless I’m just really bad at finding threads). Since so many of us here are writers, I thought it’d be good to have a space to do just that. Post about anything writing related here: what you’re working on, things you love about writing, things you don’t love about writing, and those times when you have ideas but then can’t figure out what to do with them. Here are some prompt questions as well: What’s your favourite part about writing? Is it developing an idea into something more? Making your characters suffer and putting them through eternal torment? Staring at the roof for two hours wondering whether you’ll ever finish that first draft? Why do you write? What motivates you? What’s your least favourite part about writing? Because let’s face it, nothing is 100% enjoyable all of the time. (Unless it is for you, which in that case, can you please teach me your ways?) Are you more of a plot or character driven writer? Do you like hard or soft magic systems, or something in between? Or no magic system at all? What’s your favourite genre/subgenre to write in? Do you only stick to one genre, or do you write across genres? Happy writing!

Nothing interesting. She was tempted to curl up in the drawer, though. Maybe it had a false bottom? Or maybe if she pulled it out there would be something hidden behind it? Hoping that she wasn’t about to destroy her own furniture, she pulled. -

Who LOVES The Legend of Zelda!
The Awakened Salad replied to Ironwill2112's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Windwaker’s one of my favourites! It has such charm, and a nice, open feel. You can really see how it influenced Breath of the Wild in terms of exploration. Except for the wind temple. Screw that dungeon. -

Mira sighed and left. She threw open her closet and the drawer on her bed stand, checking every corner, still holding the flower in one hand.
