  1. "But it can't be! How could always being alone and scared be better than happiness? When I was with them, I was happier than I had ever been!"
  2. "But now that they're gone... now that I'm alone, I'm more scared than I've ever been. Siren, does that mean... does that mean that being loved is a bad thing?"
  3. "That's not the way it turned out, though. Then I met Jay, Lloyd, Aryanna, Cadenza... they were the first people in a long time to love me."
  4. "It was just life, then. I thought that was the way things were."
  5. "I've always been alone," Janice said. "I had to live for so long without anyone who loved me."
  6. "She would've." Janice nodded, closing her eyes. "But she isn't here anymore."
  7. "No! It was an accident!"
  8. "My mom used to sing that to me," Janice said, "before I killed her."
  9. "I... don't have one yet."
  10. "Beyond the world... gone from thought and time, what's left you has yet to be mourned." Janice didn't remember anything more than that.
  11. "And I'm Leonie," Leonie said softly.
  12. "Under the sea... behind the sky... it hears your pleas... it feels your cry..."
  13. "If you allow our protection to extend to them," Aerith said, "then we'll drop our previous terms by... say, three years?"
  14. "No time to sleep... on this journey you take, every moment you rest is a thorn..."
  15. "No can do, remember?" Aerith nodded back from the way they came. "The portal closed a few minutes ago. We can't leave until next Monday. And you can't kill us anyway." "We can kill those companions of yours," he replied.
  16. The song stopped as Janice realized she was singing aloud. She contemplated for a second, but decided to give herself one last comfort. "Throughout the way," she began, "to a faraway land, where dreams and wishes are born..."
  17. Aerith placed himself between her and the villagers. "I come in peace!" "We don't want you here," one of them growled, "get out or we'll kill ya!"
  18. Janice's voice attuned to the song, too soft to be heard completely. Snatches of stanzas were all that came out. "Under... behind..." her voice quieted for a moment, "along a way..."
  19. "I was always alone..." Janice hugged her arms close. The sound whistled in her ears, playing an oddly familiar tune. She found herself humming along.
  20. "You need to give them time to let their anger cool a little. After that, I'll make a deal."
  21. "Don't worry... they won't kill you yet."
  22. She watched the dagger sink into the depths. Wind blew through her hair; it had grown slightly longer during the time Trace had taken over her body. Janice sat down by the cliff, closing her eyes and taking a shaking breath. "Here all alone... all alone... all alone..." It was unclear if she knew she was speaking aloud.
  23. Janice fingered her qhoral dagger, clutching it tight. She had relied on it for so much in her early days... Now, though, she had other things to rely on. Jay, Lloyd, Aryanna, Cadenza... she had them. She carefully stood up, walking to the ridge's edge. She held up her dagger. "Pain it is," Janice said. Janice reeled back her arm, then hurled her dagger into its depths.
  24. The townsfolk instantly formed into mobs, wielding pitchforks and torches like it was nobody's business. "They're very good at what they do," Aerith whispered to Vivace.
