  1. Why is your spelling so bad? What are you typing on?
  2. I looked like a Mexican cartoon character from the last decade... (of course I'm not uploading the picture)
  3. I assume you're asking about Ookla season? It's between Nov-Dec, for the occasion of Peter Ahlstrom and Brandon Sanderson's birthdays. The former used to have Ookla the *something* as his username on the Time Waster's Guide apparently that's where the name comes from. Brandon's birthday is called Koloss Head-Munching Day for... reasons. After this we get the State of the Sanderson for the year.
  4. Uh, guys? Sorry for the interruption but this is getting kinda off-topic, might want to continue this in DMs or Entertainment Discussion?
  5. He wanted to Bond a spren from her, not Sja-Anat. Hoid would discover said trick soon with his own spren soon enough.
  6. I missed Navani's epigraph! Hmm... it makes sense that Flamespren would be easier to divide, fire is very eager to spread and be shared after all.
  7. Ah, what is gravity composed of? Depends on whether you ask someone who leans towards General Relativity or Quantum Mechanics. Ripple in the fabric of space-time or force carriers called Gravitons... the Theory of Everything, I wonder which direction Brandon leans towards.
  8. It's a bit complicated and this thread is already plenty flammable, sorry but there's no way I'd want to condense so much history into a post, you'll have to look it up (don't worry, it's actually plenty interesting). It's also a bit off-topic. I wouldn't mind if anyone wants to discuss politics so long as its more directly related to the subjects of this thread. While talking about Moash's actions (and getting my own interpretation in on the issue) was one of the reasons why I created this thread, the biggest issue, as I've clarified multiple times was to address the hatred going around in any discussions of the topic (as well as the frankly tiresome amount of memes). Almost everytime someone tries to say anything related to Moash that wasn't (you know the name of that subreddit, and so do I) people jumped straight down the throats of the people and started questioning their sense of morality (so rude!). So I was asking people to stop that. As for the Moash issue, the thing is, people are vengeful creatures. You're already at least mildly miffed or irritated that I like Moash, aren't you? And if you're not, then scroll up, see how many people were! And that's fine! That's my point! Kaladin's reactions are almost unreasonably heroic in a sense. Oh it's still a very human reaction, yes, though mankind has valourized these characteristics in our stories for ages now. We've all sought petty revenge in our lives, dealing with petty annoyances, it's very rare and difficult and even counter-intuitive to take the higher road. We're not Kaladin (case in point: ugly arguments on the internet). And that's fine, people have a right to be angry! Especially when they're wronged! Elhokar destroyed Moash's life and easily turned his eyes away and forgot all about it just for the sake of avoiding embarrassment! Frankly speaking, most people in Kaladin's situation would've stabbed Elhokar right there if they had gone through half of what Moash & Kaladin went through! Anger, riots, rebellion, hopelessness: these things exist in real life for the very same reason! It wasn't all personal decisions, Moash didn't have any reason not to go through with it unlike Kaladin, and most often it's that which stops people from taking revenge. Moash didn't just decide to be the bad guy, he was kicked to the ground and then buried into it by the social hierarchy of Roshar and he's suffered enough! So, if you're angry at him, congrats! As of RoW, Moash is I brought out Gaz because Moash was not in any better of a place than Gaz, in fact, he was worse off! What way out did Moash have? Servitude towards the group, the very one person who wronged him! Would anyone reading this really be capable of defending a person who wrongfully imprisoned your family where they died and then enslaved you? When such an occurrence is so very common that an entire economic system exists because of it? Which itself is built into your very culture because of which you could never aspire to a higher station in life? Could you? Really? If you can, I'm sure you could also muster some forgiveness in your heart for me if I irritated you with any of my posts in this topic, since you're such forgiving people. I'm not saying that Elhokar was evil and was out to get Moash. I understand that he was a product of his society- that's exactly the problem. He didn't do what he did because he wanted to target Moash in any way but simply because he could and get away with it, he had that much power and next to no accountability. His actions came with very little consequences for himself. And this kind of portrayal in literature matters! It's easy to see these things play out within the pages of a book, disconnected and only see the how-people-should-act, it's not so easy to act how we morally should in real life when we're wronged. Seeing social issues being a driving plot point in a story, then being swept aside for a magical calamity which humanity has to face with a united front is very problematic! This kind of unification drive has happened in real life (well, aside from the magical nature of the thing people had to show a united front against) and said social issues continue to exist or have evolved into entirely new beasts.
  9. You say that like the two irl problems aren't intertwined. But let's leave irl politics elsewhere. Tell me, what do you think of Gaz?
  10. Funnily enough, you've described exactly what I'm afraid of. That these problems will not be dealt with, but simply swept away in the face of a greater threat. How unsatisfactory.
  11. 1) a chapter that gives hope to all who were tired of Shallan's insensitive quips 2) She did... something unforgivable? Did she really let loose an Unmade in the Davar household as has been theorised? Perhaps for the Ghostbloods if they were indeed that closely affiliated even back then 3) Mraize is here! Stupid war profiteer! 4) new minor spren! (I'm keeping track of these for fun) Also Creationspren! They do seem like they'd be the secondary spren of the Lightweavers in this 5) The Sons of Honor, the original group knew a lot a things, but what did they know that a Worldhopping war-profiteering group would call dangerous knowledge? It seemed in the prologue that they learned to Worldhop items within the Rosharan system... Hmm, also wonder if they're aware of the Veristitalians or just Jasnah 6) Ialai assassination by Ghostblood operatives, instead of suicide confirmed 7) Wonder what Mraize's Aviar bestows. Mraize has very heightened senses but I don't think that's Aviar granted, maybe Breaths? 8) Mraize also treats Shallan, Veil & Radiant as separate individuals. I wonder if this kind of perception could actually affect Shallan's Cognitive... 9) A... A-a... A father figure?!?! In Mraize?! That was unexpected! 10) Shallan having a not your apprentice tantrum: the sequel 11) He wants the Stormlight? It is an easily accessible form of Investiture, distributed freely and in large amounts by a natural phenomenon. Which is something that another Worldhopper is finding invaluable *cough*Zahel*cough* 12) Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh! Stormlight in Nalthis? On Scadrial? Investiture that isn't Breath, not Preservation's, er Harmony's power dripping through metals via the Metallic Arts. Free, portable, easy-to-access Investiture... damnation Hmm... Why aren't the Ire also trying to butt in? 13) How much do the Horneaters know? Do they not allow passage easily after all, like Sigzil said? 14) Mraize is just casually dropping Cosmere knowledge! The last part is interesting though, so people practicing an Invested Art would find it harder to leave, huh 15) "I already have" *shivers* Hey Brando! Weren't we supposed to wait till era 4 for things like this to happen! 16) Sja-Anat is willing to lend Corrupted spren to the Ghostbloods!!! Too much! This is too much! 17) one of the Lightweavers! If it's Gaz then screw forgiveness! I'll personally find a way to enter the pages and strangle him!.... But I like Red and Vathah and Ishnah, dammit! Please don't be one of them! 18) Iyatil and Thaidakar, namedrop some more high-rankers for us, ones we don't know yet! Huh, so the Ghostbloods could in the future perhaps be allied with 19) Book 5 prologue can't come fast enough! He really was looking for immortality! 20) Restares, finally! Erk-! In the Honorspren capital! What! So that's why Shallan will take the mission to go to the Honorspren! 21) Shallan the Radiant or Shallan the Worldhopper? I have to say I never even contemplated the possibility of losing one of the 10 main flashback characters to be lost to anything but death Hurk! My brain! This storming chapter!
  12. Happy Birthday!

  13. Welcome to the Shard! How did you discover Sanderson?
  14. He did not give me the impression of being a Worldhopper.
  15. https://amp.reddit.com/r/Cosmere/comments/dvd450/does_each_shard_have_a_number/
  16. Yeah, era 2 feels very low stakes if you jump over straight from era 1. I couldn't even complete Alloy of Law when I first started it! But now era 2 books are the ones that I've reread the most. Secret History is awesome, don't worry!
  17. Yeah, pretty much. You can hop in with the theorizing or go over to forum games, just have fun & be nice
  18. Welcome to the Shard
  19. Lol, same Hope to see you around on the forums!
  20. Welcome to the Shard, @Splinter of Wood! (Nice name, btw ) What about least favourite character?
  21. No other continents or major landmasses but there are other islands. Perhaps the fabled Origin of Storms too, who knows? But something beyond the Ocean of Origins has been hinted strongly by the story of Wandersail & Puuli's interlude so there must be something more out there.
  22. Guys come on ew no why?! Leshwi is soooooo oooold! This is cradle robbing! Was the sparkly vampire not enough for this world or all those damnation anime?! This is creepy is what it is and I just cannot believe in a healthy relationship with such a screwed dynamic. Oh wait, it's not a shipping thread? thank god! Wait the ship exists? Where are my cannonballs?!
  23. That's not morbidity. It's a simple matter of subtraction. See the list of works with positive LGBT representation, count the no., then subtract it from the total no. of all fiction. Then because some people would still whine, multiply the result by 10, which would still not be even 1% of total literature. Then you'll get the other whiners because even the original no. was wayyy too much rep for them. Play these two types of people against one another, et voilà.
  24. Brandon's described the Cosmere as being made up of matter, energy and Investiture, which is a third thing that the real world doesn't have. He's said that, though do note that it's still not canonized, the Spiritual and Cognitive Realms are made of Investiture. So I think that Connection, Fortune and Identity are made of Investiture. For Identity or sDNA, he's already described it as "decomposing" and melding back with the Investiture of the Spiritual Realm, so it stands to reason that the same might stand true for Connection & Fortune.
