  1. Evelyn stood at the bottom of the steps, uncertain of where to go. She didn't see any obvious direction; no explosions, slicked roads, or -- and there it was. A flash of strangely colored lightning exploded out over the rooftops, and Evelyn took off running in that direction.
  2. Evelyn wandered around, trying to find someone to talk to. Almost everyone was either dancing or chatting with friends already though. She had just decided to go get something to eat when she saw someone that she recognized from school. His name was David, and he was actually pretty nice. She walked over and started to talk to him.
  3. Evelyn paused at the entrance to the dance, immediately beginning to question why she had let herself be talked into coming. The room was absolutely filled with people she didn't know, and if there were only people she didn't know there, then she would probably spend most of the time standing around not talking to anyone and feeling incredibly out of place. Unless . . . Evelyn glanced back the way she had come. It was dark and quiet out there. No one would notice if she just slipped out and read for the whole time . . . It was dark, true, but she had a flashlight in her ever-present book bag that she could use. You agreed to come, Evelyn thought forcefully, turning back towards the dance, you can't exactly back out now. Sighing internally, she fixed a smile on her face and entered the room.
  4. Evelyn sat, listening to everyone talking. The topics were varied, mostly about homework, though she did hear something about a dance. Shana went inside and came back a bit later with some papers for Rob. Evelyn looked around once more before slipping away. Nothing much seemed to be happening, and she'd like to see more of the house.
  5. "I'll work on the dough." Evelyn grabbed the other bowl and started copying Shana.
  6. "My name's Evelyn," she said, smiling. "Did you want any help?"
  7. Evelyn followed Rob outside, and started pulling the ingredients out of the bags. "Flour, butter, marshmallows, garlic powder. What are all of these for?"
  8. "If it were evolutionary, then wouldn't people want to stay away from fire? Fire is dangerous. You would probably be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't been burned at one time or another. I've heard people say before that it's cool to look at though, so maybe that's the reason?" Evelyn followed Rob out of the kitchen, glad he had taken the lead. Who knew how long she would have been lost if Evelyn had tried to find it on her own? @I think I am here.
  9. Evelyn smiled and grabbed the last of the bags. "I'm happy to help. It definitely beats standing around awkwardly. You say they're doing a campfire? That would explain where everyone went. There seems to be some sort of weird attraction to campfires. Somebody starts one and everyone just gravitates towards it."
  10. "Hi. My name's Evelyn. Do you want any help with those?" It seemed like there was a lot of groceries, and she was starting to feel a bit awkward just sitting around.
  11. "In a roundabout way I guess. When I contacted the other Elantrians, they said they were sending someone to help. Jamie and Cassie were the ones that showed up, so apparently they knew about them."
  12. Evenlyn looked over at Draug. "The amplifier thing? Yeah, it worked. I used it to contact the other Elantrains, let them know what happened, and they sent Jamie and Cassie to pick me up. Apparently they didn't want to send any other Elantrians until we know what happened to Callisto. Anyway, I guess you're right about not needing to use the illusion, but I'm used to it." She pulled the platter with the cake Leona had made over and started to eat.
  13. Windrunner's hand shoots up as well. If anyone was going to be going anywhere with this strange person, then it would be him. If it was dangerous, then everyone else would be safe, and if they actually did need a leader for anything, then Windrunner would make the choice that would protect everyone. Skybreaker starts trying to get everyone except for Bondsmith to lower their hands.
  14. Evelyn shugged, putting her necklace back on. "It's the only one that I know about, which probably doesn't say much."
  15. Evelyn glanced around and saw everyone looking at her. She blushed slightly, her cheeks turning a darker shade of silver. "You can probably see why I use the illusion now."
  16. "Thanks," Evelyn said, smiling gratefully at Leona.
  17. "Alright." Evelyn reached up and unclasped her maple-leaf necklace. The illusion vanished as soon as she took it off. "There's a different way to do it that doesn't rely on the necklace or anything like that, but I was worried that the other way might stop working when I got too far from home."
  18. "Yeah, I think I could use some cake right about now," Evelyn said, managing a faint smile. She turned to Doc, and tried to answer his question. "To understand the official reason you'll need to understand a bit more how our power works. You see, there's something special about the UK. It lets us draw power from it, but the farther away we go, the weaker our power gets. We officially came here to test a way for us to get the same power here as we did there. So, technically, we came here for that, but I guess I was hoping . . . " Draug asked another question before Doc could respond. "Wait a minute. Silvery skin?" Evelyn turned to him, a little surprised. "Yeah, is that important or something?"
  19. "So that's why . . ." Evelyn pulled a chair over to her and slowly sat down, fer eyes fixed on the floor. When she looked up again, her eyes were blurred with tears. "I probably owe you all an explanation. I won't try to hide anything, because you're probably all Radiants or something and even if you aren't then that Sha-Theoxis this will probably just take the memories away." The words were bubbling out. Evelyn noticed and stopped taking a deep, shuddering, breath. When she began talking again her words were more controlled. "I became an Elantrian two years ago. One day, I woke up to find myself with the silvery skin and white hair of an Elantrian. I was terrified. I didn't know what had happened, and I thought I must be sick or something. I locked myself in my room, terrified of what would happen if anyone saw me. My mom knocked on the door, trying to get me to come out or open the door. When I wouldn't she called my dad. "They opened the door to my room, and as soon as they saw me I knew it had been silly of me to be afraid of them. My parents wrapped me in their arms, telling me that it would all be okay. And everything was. The other Elantrians found me after a few days and explained what had happened. They taught me how to use the Aons, and I was able to go back to school after I had mastered the illusion I'm currently using. "For an entire year, everything was wonderful. I was learning so much! I would practice the Aons everyday, learning new ways to use them. Then, about a year ago, my parents went on vacation to the U.S.A. When they came back, they didn't remember any more. When I tried to tell them about what I had learned, they thought it was some book or fantasy thing I had thought up with my friends. I finally accepted that they would never remember or understand, and we grew more and more distant. I couldn't share the thing I was most excited about. They don't even know I'm here right now," Evelyn continued in a soft voice.
  20. Evelyn froze, then turned to Draug. "Investiture . . . Magic? This thing, it takes your memories of magic?" She didn't seem to have heard Leona's question
  21. Evelyn shrugged. "Again, I don't know. We weren't planning to, but I still have no idea. Why? What's outside the city?"
  22. "I can think of a few reasons, but you'll probably want to ask one of them for the right one."
  23. Evelyn winced. "Yeah. We split up to work on some stuff and planned to meet up close to where you found me. They finished their work, I know that for sure, but they never arrived. I searched for them as well as I could, but I never found a trace. After that, I tried waiting for a few more hours in our meeting place, but they never showed. I don't know what might have happened to them. Maybe they got caught by the people the found me. I honestly have no idea."
