  1. "Nice to meet you, Nym. My name's Evelyn, and I'm -" she tried to think of what she could answer. Nym probably didn't know about Elantrians, and it could take a long time to explain. She finally settled on, "I'm not actually a radiant. I have a different type of magic that I can explain later, if you want."
  2. Evelyn had come back inside with the intent to grab some food, and then head back to her room before Ax and Jace got there. That plan was demolished when she heard a knock at the door. It's them! Quick, hide! She jumped behind a handy wall as Cassie opened the door. There was some quiet conversation, and Evelyn heard Cassie invite them in. She risked a cautious look around the wall, and was surprised to see that it wasn't Ax and Jace at the door. Pleasantly surprised, of course, because that meant the party hadn't started yet and her plan would still work. The girl who'd knocked looked nice too, so it shouldn't be too much of a risk . . . Evelyn walked casually out from behind the wall, trying to look as though she hadn't been hiding behind it. "Hi," she said to the girl, fervently hoping that they weren't here for the wedding.
  3. If you've ever heard of the song "What Are Words," it would be perfect for Kaladin and Syl.
  4. Kira entered the bedroom, flicking on the light. A quick glance at the windows showed that the curtains were closed, and the light wouldn't show from the street. "So, any idea of what we should be looking for?" Kira asked Lyssa. She had, as always, followed Kira into the room. "Voidspren. And spiders. You should always check for spiders. 'Cause if you look for them, then they can't sneak up on you." "While you are, undoubtedly, correct, I'm not sure that spiders or voidspren," whatever those were, "will help us to figure out what Christopher was doing so far from home." She noticed a bedside table as she spoke, and began looking through it's drawers as she waited for Lyssa to respond. "Unless it was a spider that did it. Maybe a spider bit Christopher, and it made him do crazy stuff. And then, after he did all the crazy stuff the spider killed him." "Christopher was killed by a knife wound, not a spider bite," Kira said absently, pulling out some of the papers, and beginning to look through them. "How do you know? It might have been a really big spider. Besides, it's always been suspicious to me that spiders have so many legs, but can't pick anything up. Seriously. You guys can pick stuff up with only five fingers, and I'm supposed to believe a spider can't do it with eight whole legs? Even if they need to use two to stand on, that still leaves six whole legs. It's clearly an alibi, meant to trick us into believing that the spiders weren't responsible." "Lyssa, I have never seen a spider pick something up in all the time I've been alive." Lyssa nodded sagely and whispered, "The conspiracy runs deep. Clearly they've been plotting this for a long time . . . scheming in the shadows, waiting for the perfect time to strike. Who knows who they're going to attack next?! The police would never be able to see past the spiders’ clever alibi and apprehend the true culprit. "What’s that?” Kira had no idea. It was a blank envelope. No stamp, and no address. It wasn't even sealed. She sat down, and emptied the envelope's contents on the bed.
  5. "Probably. Want help finding one?" Evelyn offered. Using the kitchen table was out of the question, since it was still completely covered in stuff. The good news was that instead of it being covered in dishes and groceries, it was now filled with towers of tacos and other foods.
  6. "I should be good without help for a while, since the tortillas were the main things I needed help with. You can go ahead and help with the decorating if you want." Evelyn took the drained cans from Edwin and emptied them into a large bowl, beginning work on the black bean salad.
  7. Evelyn cast a quick glance toward the tortillas. "Yeah, those look good. Go ahead and take them off the heat, then wrap them in a damp towel so they stay pliable. Or we can try to make taco shells. Which one do you think is better?"
  8. "Not exactly? Stormlight looks kind of like lightning, but it's not. It's kind of . . . Well, hard to explain, for one thing. It's energy, but not like lightning, because lightning is electricity. Plus, we get lightning from the storms, but Radiants generate stormlight with time." Kira, aware that that didn't make any sense, took a deep breath and tried again. "It's like . . . Stormlight is the soul of the storm." She blinked, as though surprised by what she had just said, but continued with a bit more confidence. "It's spirit, it's life, it's spren, it's . . . light. Whatever you want to call it, really. It's what you would have if you took away all of the stuff of the storm. Without the thunder, rain, or even the lightning. It's the feelings you get while watching a thunderstorm, as well as what the storm is. Power, awe, majesty, fear, peace, a willingness to fight. "Stormlight comes from inside of Radiants because we hold the soul of the storm inside of us. We've promised to fight. To put life before death, strength before weakness, and journey before destination. Because we promised to act, we were given powers to act with. The stormlight, spren, and surges." "Sorry," Kira said a slight blush rising on her cheeks, "that was way more than you asked for. And I'm still not sure if it made any sense. I promise I'm not trying to be cryptic, it's just kind of difficult to explain." It probably didn't help that she'd never tried to explain it before. She looked over at Marcel when he suggested splitting up, and nodded, relieved. "Splitting up sounds good. I'll go that way," Kira said, gesturing towards the bedroom.
  9. "I've never tried it before," Kira said, shrugging. "Maybe one of my powers would be able to help, but I'm clean out of stormlight."
  10. "Is it that one over there?" Kira pointed to a likely house, about three houses down from where they were. It seemed to be one of only two houses without any lights on inside.
  11. "When I start cooking the tortilla's it's going to be on a pretty high heat, and they're going to cook fast. If someone could be in charge of cooking those while I roll out more tortillas? It's only, like, thirty seconds on each side, so I wouldn't have time to do both. Or, if you want, you can start draining the cans of black beans and corn for the black bean salad."
  12. "Pretty well," Evelyn replied. She had her hair pulled back in a ponytail, and her hands were covered in tortilla stuff. "I'm just working on the tortillas now, since they can be done ahead of time. After that, I'm probably going to start on some black bean salad, since that can just be refrigerated after it's done."
  13. "Great," Evelyn said, her smile turning more to the "evil" side of the spectrum. "It would probably be a good idea to make a list of what we need, so we don't get halfway through and realize we're missing something." She did a quick run through of the kitchen and came up with a surprisingly short list. "We need masa harina, probably about two or three bags, five or six bunches of green onions, about a dozen avocados, ten limes, two or three bunches of cilantro, six bell peppers, seven cans of black beans, and seven cans of corn. Also probably a couple more tomatoes. Other than that, we should be good for groceries."
  14. "I don't know that there are any special ingredients," she said trying to think of any ingredients they might need. "It should mostly be stuff we already have around. Wait, there is one thing. It's called masa harina, and it's basically corn flour. It's used for making tortillas and things called papusas. "By the way, were there any foods you wanted in particular, or just, like, my entire memorized Spanish-Mexican repertoire? And it's real Mexican food, right? No flour tortillas or anything?"
  15. "Wow . . ." Evelyn whispered. Then a giant grin spread across her face. "That's awesome! I'd love to cook."
  16. "I think I've seen them around before. They're getting married?! When?" she asked, eyes going wide with surprise. "Do you want me to cook?"
  17. Evelyn was walking by the kitchen when she heard Cassie's question. "Mexican food? I can make Mexican food. What do you need it for?"
  18. Kira shrugged, as she'd never actually seen the address, and waited for someone else to say something. For a moment, everything was silent. Then Kira spoke up again. "We could be the Aletheians, after the Greek goddess of truth."
  19. Kira followed Wita, smiling at the mention of a team name. "Maybe we could be TPWGAIADA, or the Clueless Bystanders, or the Trueseers. Actually, it would probably be better if someone else came up with the name." @Sorana
  20. "Yeah, that sounds good. Do you want a window seat?" Kira asked.
  21. Evelyn had been standing there, head going back and forth between the two as they talked, project forgotten. "Wait, what's going on? What happened to Joy?"
  22. Kira had followed Wita and Marcel into the bus, but had gotten a little bit delayed trying to pay. At last, she got her ticket and was able to enter the bus, though she decided to wait for Lewis before choosing where to sit. Lyssa, however, seemed to be back to her usual self, and had zoomed over to where Wita and Marcel were sitting. She had changed to the shape of what looked like a little girl, and was listening intently to their conversation.
  23. "That works," Kira said, shrugging. "I should have enough to pay for myself, and Wita said she could take someone for free. Lewis, you're still going in the car, right? So that would make three people on the bus, and two in the car. Looks like we'll be meeting up again in Sugar Heights." She gave a sort of half-wave goodbye, turning to follow Marcel towards the bus. Lyssa followed after her, back in vine form once more, only darting ahead once to say hi to Wita.
