It is not like Rayse can stop or make someone be angry without specific effort.  A lot of what the shard does is without the vessel's specific permission or potentially even knowledge.

That's not what I mean.  I just mean that I would think people can still feel angry even if Odium had no influence or was totally separated from them.

Except that cannot be fully accurate as they still experience phenomena that can not be described in terms of entropy and stasis.

Again, I see what you are saying, but I still don't really like the idea that people need shards to allow them to feel/do normal human things.  The Shard's Intent affects what the Shard can do, but maybe people are more mutable.

It is hard to explain.  Adonalsium was everything and created everything.  The shards are 16 pieces of him.  Everything in the Cosmere is controlled by one or more shards at least indirectly.  As Harmony says "I am not omnipotent but I believe that parts of me could be."

Interesting.  I get what you are saying more, now

Did you mean Capital C connected?

The shards are everywhere.  They permeate everything.  Even if Honor and Cultivation did not do anything to any specific group of people they still grow and have the capacity to keep oaths.

Were made by two shards that is not the same thing.

    1) I meant lower c, but uppercase C might make more sense...  Idunno, still hashing this idea out a little

    2)  This is philosophically weird to me.  There are more than 16 types of action/emotion, yet we still feel them.  So theoretically shards are not necessary to feel or do something. So assuming that to be true, its reasonable that just because someone can act honorable does not mean they have honor in them, right?  Or am I way off here.  Because it seems like free will would account for not needing shards to be a certain way.

Everyone in the Cosmere is part of multiple shards.  Do you think that people from Scadrial do not get angry?  I also highly doubt that Dalinar does not recognise that he wants more then one thing and has more then one nature.  He may claim to be dense but he is not stupid.  Having and navigating multiple impulses is part of life.  While I agree that people from Alethkar tend to act like teenagers rather then responsible adults I fail to understand why you think that belonging to more then one shard is important for Dalinar's development.

I meant it as more of a direct connection to the three shards than just acknowledging he gets angry or honorable.  Three shards very directly touched his life, and that is the significant part.  Of course people feel all the different aspects of shards, but most people don't interact with three of them.

Side point, does feeling an emotion mean that you are touched by that shard, or made up of it?  Because Preservation and Ruin specifically put part of their power in people when they created the world.  But did the other shards?  Did Honor or Cultivation have anything to do with the Ashyn humans' creation?  And either way, does that mean they have a direct bit of the shard or do they just feel things?

This theory comes up fairly often which may be a good thing great minds think alike but I personally dislike it.  It feels too similar to something we have seen before and I personally think giving Odium the join't abilities of teamwork and personal development sounds like a recipe for disaster.  Also holding that many shards together is going to be tough.  Still check out some of the other threads.  Their is plenty of evidence both for and against.

That's why I don't think it has anything to do with an actual ascension, more like Dalinar recognizing the parts of himself belong to multiple shards.  I don't think he will hold any shards from this, just that he has a piece of all of them inside him, the way people on Scadrial have bits of preservation (and Ruin?)

The only problem most of us have with that it feels too similar to Mistborn.

    Otherwise, it's a solid theory.

    That is the one drawback

  7. I've seen a lot of people posit that when Dalinar says that he is Unity, he is taking a step towards taking up the Shard of Honor and renaming it Unity.

    I have a alternate theory

What if Dalinar represents the unity of all three shards in the Rosharin system?

Men are often referred to as "children of Honor", and he is bonded to the Stormfather, which contains the remnants of Honor's power.

Dalinar spent his life being groomed by Odium to be his champion, and was called "Son of Odium" by the Nightwatcher.

Cultivation takes some of Dalinar's memories and a piece of him.

Ergo, I think Unity is more like Harmony, and while Dalinar is not a Shard, he was representing the union of all three.

  8. I tend to agree with all the interpretations where is his "Odium" anyways, but to address the original idea, I'm not sure I see the point.

Passion leads to impulse.  I feel like trying to change the name is splitting hairs.  There is a reason that an impromptu, angry murder is a crime of passion.  It's not thought out, it happens because of passion.  So trying to argue to change the name feels like splitting hairs.

  9. I think this is kind of how the Radiants could work.  Bridge Four was swearing the First and Second Ideals before having spren, though Kaladin had Syl before swearing any oaths. I think the options are 1) let the bond form organically and the oaths come later or 2) Be a squire, start swearing oaths and Radiantspren will bond you if they find you worthy

  10. So in my reread of Oathbringer, I noticed that when, in the flashbacks, Dalinar feels the Thrill, it says on a few occasions that he almost hears a beat or rhythm.  I wonder if this has anything to do with the Singers' rhythms?

My theory is that he's hearing one of the Rhythms of power faintly, because the Unmade are spren of Odium and Odium's spren are what grant the new Rhythms.  Being under the influence of such a powerful, giant spren, especially for someone like Dalinar who's spirit web has to be a little broken to be a nascent Radiant, creates a mindset or almost a Connection to the Singers in a way not yet explored.

Paint I can just suspend disbelief on. It’s paint, cool.

The Welded Ornamentation, however, is something that bugs me.

With our modern technology, welders can work their mojo on any kind of metal you set in front of them... Provided the pieces are the same type and of reasonably similar composition.

How in the Crem Filled Storms, with a typical forge and bellows, are they able to to weld dissimilar metals?!?!

    HOW?!?

You heard it here first, folks

  12.  Found a WoB that might dispute the need to fix armor, unless I'm misreading it

And I know it's a double post, but this is kind of a new thought/answer to my own question.

    Questioner

In the book [The Way of Kings] you discuss that if you were to lose a piece of Shardplate you have to regrow the part back, or else someone takes it and tries to regrow the entire plate. One thing that has been bugging me for a while now is if you were to take a small piece of the armor, such as a glove, and fuel it with Stormlight to regrow the whole armor, does it retain the original armor? Like does it retain how it looked before, the glove?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes

    Questioner

    So it just transfers over.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, and the original glove will disintegrate.

Kind of sort of. Dalinar said they buffed the paint out of his to get it back to the grey when he first got his, which is pretty much sanding from what I understand.

I should have remembered that since I read the scene where he first wore his plate like yesterday... but yeah

    4 minutes ago, Quantus said:

It would have implications on those borrowing plate, like the King's Blades and Plate that get loaned out for duels.  The plate readjusts itself to fit whomever is wearing it, and a lot of paints would start to crack and flake off under that kind of strain.

Never even thought of that.  They never do mention that despite the King's plate being borrowed often

  14. 52 minutes ago, Karger said:

Most likely one of the reasons Dalinar insists on keeping his the normal grey.  Maintaining the ornamentation would be extremely difficult in the field.

That was kind of my thought.  I imagine that Shardbearers on extended campaigns either keep artisans around to repaint their plate, or end up with a very mixed set of unpainted and painted plate.

This also raises the question of getting the paint off.  I would guess they basically sand it down?  Idunno, just weird stuff I think about

  15. I never really thought of it before, but all the ornamentation on shardplate probably has to be remade anytime damage is taken.  Obviously anything welded on (still not sure how that works entirely) would have to be recast and reattached, but any coloration would probably also need to be repainted after the plate grows back.

    Just something I found interesting

Nale is mad, but honest. He does know that his quest does not find universal approvement.

I don't think that is in opposition to my take at all.  His honesty with himself and knowledge that his mission won't be universally liked doesn't mean that he doesn't think the world would be better off.  The "world knowing" part could be hyperbole.

To me its more like in his mind, the world doesn't know what eh and his do, but it would thank them if it knew, even for their brutality

Possible, but I would doubt it given the continuation

That just not matches Nale. What he did remained hidden. People had no idea the Knights Radiant were returning.

But it doesn't have to be fully accurate.  That could be how Nale feels.  He thinks the world is better for him murdering nascent (newborn)  surgebinders. And even if his job is secret, the world wants him to do it because it will be better off in the end.

So it's more metaphorical than exact

Lift is dealing with a rather unusual storm.  It is not unusual for a for parts of a building to break during a storm(remember King Taravangian's granddaughter) so giving everyone an assigned station is generally just a good idea.  A crises during a storm with people moving around in panic would be even worse.

I forgot about that. That’s a good point. Thank you
