  1. Well, Shallan has very close relatives. Finding an explanation for her alone is insufficient. You have to explain why the whole Davar family looks Veden.
  2. Allomancy does not involve transporting Investiture. Feruchemy would, if you transported a metal mind, but we have not seen that. Well, then we need at least two causes. The Returned do not have this issue. And of course, this also needs a reason. But, yes, indeed, I am basically basing my argument on Occam's Razor.
  3. Well, what invested objects or people have we seen transported off world by normal people - Nightblood - Breaths - Divine Breath - Hemalurgic spikes (Mraize's hoard and reportedly a Kandra) - Elantrians - a Nalthian pseudo-Shardblade - a Threnodian Shade in a gun (Nazrilof's weapon) - an Aether (the crystal in Mraize's hoard) - that chain in Shadesmar (perhaps - inconclusive) - whatever Threnody used at the time of the Catacendre (unseen, but clearly they could travel out of their system) The movable objects definitely are associated with Shards other than Endowment. What do we know cannot leave: - Spren - Heralds - Stormlight in a sphere - Kelsier What can be transported was either solid or attached to something solid. What could not leave was incorporal without a housing, or had a body made by arcane means (the Heralds). The Heralds are a bit inconclusive, as they are also affected by the oath pact potentially. The crucial element here is Kelsier. His Investiture came from Scadrial, definitely neither Endowment nor Honor were involved.
  4. Unlikely. We are seeing a broader phenomenon. Kelsier was drawn back. None of the Ire had a Seon. Yet Elantrians, who are more invested than anything short of a Returned can travel. You really cannot reduce this to Honor vs. Endowment.
  5. Why does she look Veden? Why did standard Rosharan travelling performers know the story?
  6. Being maskless is a questionable concept for a Lightweaver.
  7. He certainly can reveal how her father got into contact with the Ghostbloods. Pattern wouldn't know that.
  8. Under that premise it gets awfully hard to explain why only the original Awakener can retrieve the Breath out of an awakened object. Presumably Breath is only neutral during the short time it is transfered from person to person. But it does, as far as we know. Mraize's little collection of trophies and Vasher and Vivenna show that many forms of Investiture bound to physical objects or people can be carried off world. Free Investiture as in Spren or Cognitive Shadows seems to be a problem. Stormlight is the oddity. Why? Simplest explanation: It is tied to the Stormfather, who stays on Roshar. Or alternatively, it is not bound tightly enough to the gems. Wit is now a Lightweaver and an Awakener. I would not bet much that he cannot be effectively at two places at the same time.
  9. He is ambiguous. His wording can be seen to refer to Investiture in general or to Stormlight in particular. It makes more sense in the latter interpretation. Of course that also raises the question why Stormlight is different from Breath. And the simplest answer would be Identity. It looks like Stormlight in iys natural form is keyed to Roshar and/or the Stormfather. It would be a fascinating experiment to have Dalinar charge a sphere and to try to take it off world. Nightblood is presumably still keyed to Shashara.
  10. So was Warren Hastings. In fact so was Francis Drake for a part of his career, technically. I am afraid that the title of merchant implies a strict division of mercantile and other functions that does not exist on Roshar. Or anywhere in the Cosmere. What is Waxillum Ladrian? A politician, an aristocrat, an industrialist, a lawman? In Thaylenah the council of captains is part of the government. In their view you can buy a country and a company can own warships and armies.
  11. Yes. Steris stored Waxilium metal flakes in fish oil. That stuff is quite nutritious. The allomantic fuel has to be metallic quite pure inside your body You could take it as an enema if you really insisted.
  12. I suppose before you start an expedition into Shadesmar you will at least talk to Jasnah. She is too obvious a source of information to ignore. Or you'd talk to Wit, too. Or even to the Stormfather. Or Nightblood. Or even Sja-Anat. Right then and there? That is a bit much of a coincidence.
  13. How would the others fail to notice that they are carrying Blackbane?
  14. By having spies in the war camps. Gavilar was good. I am sure Veil would have ideas. That makes sense. Why would they? As soon as the Knights Radiant know what he knows killing him is moot. That circle of people is small. OK, is it possible that Mraize is speaking out of an assumption here? Or does he positively know how Restares looks? Or people you work for. Or you must have had something valuable to sell. Azure had. Yes He would not have a need to hide there. But that does not rule out that he has a need to be there and explains it by hiding. And Azure is considered male by most people. Possible. EDIT: Into wild speculation Let's try the Sherlock Holmes approach. Let's assume that the Ghostbloods have visual ID. But the Ghostbloods are not infallible. In particular they do not have a word by word account of the night Gavilar died. So they can be decieved. It is possible that somebody claims to be Restares, but isn't. Gavilar is in Lasting Integrity claiming to be Restares.
  15. Yes, for each individual. In general, no. Theirs is a culture that has legends other other worlds for millenia. And some of them can look into Shadesmar and they are surrounded by supernatural entities. Kaladin does not have a proper concept like that. He probably knows that there are planets other than Roshar in the Rosharan system, as he is fairly educated for a Vorin man, but he has no concept of the distance to the stars. You are raising a point. What is the state of astronomy on Nalthis? Well, they considered their moons inhabitated for one thing. And they had a concept of the Tranquiline Halls and Damnation. I doubt that this distinction is meaningful to most Rosharans. In a world with spanreeds that is more obvious to more people than in the past of the Earth. Do they have a theory of what stars are?
  16. They speak, so they must breathe. I think we can assume that they eat and drink for fun. But in doing so, are they triggering the inevitable outcome of these activities? The added material can't just vanish, can it? So is it normally digested? Do they have a gall bladder? And more delicately, do female Returned menstruate? If they do, whence'll come the lost mass if they can't eat?
  17. And the messenger used a cojoiner to tell her that?
  18. When did he leave? He may have fled as soon as he learned of the mysterious countdown. Extract information? Which exact information? Do they still not know what Gavilar did? That raises a point. How do you "extract information" inside their capital from somebody the Honorspren have granted asylum. If your mission is to persuade them to bond more humans, torturing a refugee inside their capital is rather low on the list of things you should do. So would be killing Restares. Is she supposed to promise him amnesty in exchange for information? Are they? Given the state of Shallan's memory this is not something I'd feel confident about. Shallan's grandfather, whom she murdered? This is entering unconstrained territory. And who is known generally? This is Roshar. They do not have TV news. How many people have their portraits painted and distributed? The kings of Jah Keved, Gavilar, probably the Sunmaker. And the list of those Mraize could be sure about ends not much later. And how good are the Ghostblood records? Whom can Mraize be sure about them having met Shallan? And how many of the are alive? The best camouflage is being considered an idiot. They are honorable, not benevolent. If you have an agreement or claim with them, they'll honor it. And turning into a CS neatly solves the issue of how and why going to Shadesmar. I am clueless. I am into wild speculations like: Shallan is a traumatized Returned, has regressed to being a child and Restares is her widower. Sorry, that had to go out. a Herald: that just makes no sense - why would a Herald want to trigger a desolation Wit - OK, shocking. But he might trigger a desolation if the time looks advantageous. Aesudan - well she knew a lot about Gavilar's plans. I cannot help myself. A prime suspect. And Shallan is sure to have seen pictures. Azure - guilt by association I have the nagging feeling that I am overlooking something. They did not offer asylum. It was requested and granted. If you have an agreement to that effect, they will keep it, regardless of other circumstances.
  19. Going by Brandon's videos Magellan is having his cameo. The bird is from First of the Sun. He will not match a terrestial species exactly. The interesting question is what ability he grants Mraize.
  20. Restares is human Restares is staying in Lasting Integrity Restares got the Honorspren to grant him asylum Mraize claims that Restares true identity will tell Shallan what to do to him and it does not involve killing him or her So, what does that mean? Obviously it means that I was wrong. But other than that? Either Restares must be a person everybody would recognise or Shallan knows him or her personally. The prologue also mentions him, so he must have been on Roshar when Gavilar died. And it rules out Gavilar being Restares. Now, one possibility is Restares being a family member of Shallan's. And what could Shallan do, other than killing Restares? Reveal certain information about him or her to the Honorspren? By sheer proximity to Honorspren I can come up with an obvious suspect and wild speculation Vivenna - a.k.a. Azure: simple problem - why would she run the Sons of Honor Aesudan: simple problem - she is most likely dead - is that a problem? Might she be a CS? Or did Mraize mean what Restares is, not who? Might Restares be an obvious alen? An Aimian or a member of the Ire?
  21. Yes, but now we are told that with additional measures it does work. Why else mention the Everstorm? How? Does Voidlight just pool on the surface of Braize? Or a man who looked like on of Adolin's men was not one of Adolin's men.
  22. "Ḧe had Voidlight before the Everstorm" Does this tell us that there is a method to get Voidlight out of the Everstorm? It just doesn't work by simply leaving gems outside?
  23. So how would you do this? Taldaine is presumably still closed. First of the Sun is dangerous. So is Sel. Threnody is inaccessible. That leaves us Scadrial and Nalthis. Both worlds have something to offer. Nalthis gives you a form of Investiture everybody can use without hassle or preparation. Scadrial has advanced technolgy. Hence this allows for a form of ring trade. Roshar -- (Stormlight) --> Nalthis Nalthis -- (Breath) --> Scadrial Scadrial -- (Weapons) --> Roshar Nalthis also solves the problem of how to actually trade in Shadesmar: lifeless pack animals
  24. What would Dalinar sign for a steady supply of mercenaries, cannons and shells from Scadrial? His oath would presumably bind subsequent Bondsmiths.
  25. Think East India Company. The access to Roshar is through a very small number of points. If they want to watch and defend them, they can. The goal is grow enough before anybody else cracks the secret, so that their position is unassailable.
