  1. Given whom we know Restares to e, that is highly problematic. She is a Feruchemist. There is a large number of suggestions. The problem is that I mostly have negative comments. Kalak being Restares means that the Sons of Honor are a sham. Why would Kalak have a voidspren delivered? Furthermore, how come the Sons of Honor all of a sudden are worldhoppers? Now, assuming her to be a Ghostblood also is highly problematic. A Ghostblood suddenly fleeing off-world for a minor issue? That makes very little sense. They have safe houses on Roshar aplenty. Trell (assuming Trell is not Odium) is also problematic. What is in for him? Why do Odium's dirty work? I must conclude that she is a member of a group not known to us.
  2. Their dagger. That tells us nothing about the Ghostblood's dagger. Still. Kelsier has a body. Why Kalak? Why not just kidnap a Fused?
  3. Like killing your opponent with a suicide attack. You are both dead. The duell is over. But there is no winner.
  4. Then she should have attacked Odium at the moment he got transferred. And if she wanted to retire, why replace a damaged, stupid vessel with a brilliant one for her successor to deal with and fail from?
  5. An ardent caring for its lord's people are supposed to be where the people are and the need for him is greatest. So chances are he was working in a field hospital in Emul.
  6. This scene has many implications, but let's center on one. What did he pay with? It is valuable It is rare Raboniel recognised it It is small enough to fit into a bag It clincked Based on who paid and what he soiled his pants with, I am going to say: aethers What do you think?
  7. I hope for his sake that he is not locked up in a gem stone. And even so, how would they get that gem to him? The Ghostbloods know that Stormlight won't work. The likeliest outcome of doing this to a Herald or Fused in a gem is you standing somewhere between the worlds and pulling on a gem that won't budge. Are we sure it was Raysium? In fact, it would be odd for Odium only specifically to have a metal with those properties. If I had to guess I would suspect to Ghostbloods' dagger to be made with Atium. When Mraize and Raboniel negotiated it really did not sound like an existing friendly relationship. Channeling does not work. You have to hold it.
  8. True, but wouldn't Dalinar designate a second in line? He is a military officer with decades of campaigning behind him. We have three clues what we know about the agreement itself Taravangian asking Hoid, whom he expects Odium to nominate Odium running an urgent test on Lezian Yes, the problem is not tricking your enemy, but breaking your word about your own actions resulting from an agreement .We may speculate that the weapons test El ran was part of a crash project to find anti-Investiture designed for exactly that eventuality. Right, so I think the best clue was - I think - Taravangian's question to Odium. It tells us two things. He is expecting the duell to at least get very close to starting - it would be pointless to ask that question if he were concentrating on finding a way to pressure Dalinar into calling the whole thing off days before the tournament or wanted to kill Dalinar in the next few days I think we can safely assume that Taravangian does not need Hoid's sincere advise. He wants to know which enemy they are preparing against. That seems to indicate that he does not believe that Dalinar will give battle in person. Based on that I think he is speculating on a draw based on both champions dieing and is working on setting up weapons for several adversaries. But I admit that this is based on very thin ice. I would bet only a trivial amount of money on it.
  9. I will yield to the need to sacrifice one to save the many, if I am out of options.
  10. Isn't killing a hated enemy the point Vessel and Shard should be closest in alignment about? And a second point. If Odium was alone and suffered a split personality, why did he win in a match of one against two?
  11. He and his father don't match that much. At the very core the man would like to create. It peeked out when he got out that designed uniform. He chose the form of combat that is most like an art form. His father does fundamentally not understand his sons. Renarin likely does not mind, as nobody understands him. But Adolin does mind. And then you see him disappointed in not becoming Radiant. Which is not a strange idea. Even Kaladin wonders. And the reason is obvious: Mayalaran He could cast her aside. Abandon a friend. What is not to be done. Adolin is an Alethi man in that regard. You do not abandon a friend. Period. And so his father taught him. Yet the same father tells him to man up and get a spren. That is different from earlier conflicts. When they clashed about the vision, Dalinar chaffed, but he basically approved. His sonn did his duty. A disagreeable, cruel duty, but duty. When they conflicted about Sadeas, Adolin was vindicated. When he killed Sadeas, basic Alethi mores backed him up. He killed an enemy. You may quibble about methods and circumstances, but the basic act is laudable. Yet now his wife is wearing the takama in their marriage (well, the Veden version thereof) I have to reject the idea that a new wound was hewn that just needs time to heal. Things are actively worsening between him and his father. And making him a High Prince of a realm existing only on paper and in exile does not really help. His cousing putting an axe at the roots of aristocracy does not help either. His future? Obviously it depends on external factors. It is quite possible that Dalinar will die in a week. (Ironic that his future is foremost defined by his father's survival). In that case all bets are off. The man needs a family, meaning children. Secondly spatial distance from his father. It would be best for him to take an ambassadorship or go exploring. He is uniquely suited for that among the Kholin family.
  12. Is Tension really that minor of a surge that nobody expects them to study it?
  13. Right, but except for Odium and maybe Valor none are driven to it. Hence Cultivation sees death as a possible tool, not a goal. She has no problem with immortality, as long as you keep adapting, changinging or growing. Yes. But she will not destroy one crop just because she feels it is too old. As long as it is growing, fine. She may reap, she may harvest, she will kill enemies, but hers is not the circle of life aspect. As long as you grow, all is well. Yes. And, well, she is not suicidal. Odium is simply dangerous to have around. Yes. And the second Odium is open to negotiated agreements for a time. A major win. Not appreciated, rewarded or compensated. Keeping Odium bound up in the Rosharan system served the whole Cosmere at the expense of one system. It was a noble, honorable, selfless act. You are not going to get that from Cultivation. She will cooperate, but self-sacrifice is not her thing. Death is part of an ecology. Predators and prey. Not a problem. If you are eaten, you have been too weak. She is not Preservation, Devotion or Mercy. She can and will kill. Kill. There is key. She will not demand that something weaken and perish. Reasons are important to most Shards. The best example is Honor. Murdering one of your allies is unthinkable. Executing the same ally for a crime is required. Simple utilitarian calculation. Freeloaders inhibit growth. They want something to happen, they do it or pay adequately. She is not going to do it out of honor or pity. Not her Intent.
  14. What then was the purpose of throwing four new Shards into the game? And why the change of vessel? It was stated. "willingly chosen".
  15. If you mean that literally: nowhere. She is the most immobile of all Knights Radiant Figuratively, she is a scientist. She now has two surges to study. She also has a not entirely insignificant building to study. That may feel unsatisfactory. Well, honestly, that is likely. She has multiple options, though they are not easy recreate the old style method of materializing spren as fabrials - the benefits of being able to make new soulcasters would be enormous start breeding spren who like to be in fabrials replace the spren with something else (Breaths?) and the most ambitious - make artificial spren - proof of concept exists: the Honorblades Beyond that, with the expedition's return the cat is out of the bag. There will be at least diplomatic missions to other planets. Somebody needs to become the foreign secretary.
  16. It would explain that. But, sorry to be so negative, that opens yet another can of worms. See, the Cosmere is not an entirely benign and clement place. And you do not survive for several thousand years without acquiring some arcane powers, disregarding that you need to be immortal or nearly so. So how could Shallan surprise and stalk such an entity undiscovered ? why did she survive a semi-assault on such an entity (not everybody can be as peaceful as Hoid) ? why would such an entity run away in fear from a mere Surgebinder ?
  17. Why? Who has that level of ability but uses it to check up on a park regularly. If we had a cadmium bubble and a seon in that house, it would make sense that somebody is sending out status reports.
  18. He wants out of that duell or render it moot, not win it. Taravangian considers it a mistake. Insanely risky. The other side's champion could choose suicide. To destroy the world he would be confined to? He does not care. The alliance is a roadblock, not an enemy.
  19. If she goes, her late partner's Investiture is lost to her. And the Rosharan system has a world that should be restored and made green again How convinient that there are multiple other sentient species present on Roshar. That might not even be random chance. Not forever. For the present, yes, he will. If she wanted to kill him, she would have done it immediately, before he knew how to handle the power. If he goes out into the Cosmere the other Shards will need to act. She likely does not expect him to survive. But that is somebody else's problem. If need be. No. That part ended up as Ruin. Every Shard alone is problematic. Ruin had a point when he told Kelsier what Preservation alone would mean. Yes, but not your own death. That is Ruin's answer. Cultivation would emigrate, create land or, in the worst case, slay her neighbors and their children. She is growth, not that romantic cycle of life thing. That got broken up. Releasing Odium is rational. She did the job for millenia, got widowed over it and nobody thanked her for it. Not nice, but a simple utilitarian calculation. If they want Odium contained, they will have to pay the price, not she. And if some of them die in the process, well, fewer potential threats.
  20. Correct. Let me put it that way. Do you see an issue with a girl asking for something that implies her remaining sexually immature becoming the vessel of a Shard whose domain includes fertility? Yes. And that is a problem for Cultivation. It is about things that grow. She says so. Literally. Maybe. Maybe not. It is a bit thin.
  21. Am I the only one who sees an issue with a girl asking to remain sexually immature becoming the vessel of a Shard whose domain includes fertility? She was given the ability to make Lifelight, not just to use it. That has very practical implications. She is independent from the Highstorms as a fuel source. And she is iimune to weapons targeting users of Stormlight to an extent. Can we? A protest against a policy of intervention looks like it comes from outside the Rosharan system. I still seems likeliest that this is correspondence with Edgli.
  22. Suppose you are behind enemy lines to strike at an important installation. You are not equipped to handle prisoners. Nevertheless you chance to meet an enemy soldier. He surrenders Honor - he surrendered. Abort the mission and take that prisoner to a camp Valor - finish him with a knife and carry on That tastes a bit like turning Valor into a dumb blonde viking always going for a full frontal assault Your orders are to hold that bridge but you are facing overwhelming odds Honor - hold that bridge or die trying, an order is an order Valor - fight a good retreat and blow the bridge by a suicide bomber as soon as small enemy forces have crossed, then counterattack - you must do most damage to the enemy, even if that means you have to have the courage to think for yourself The extreme level of detail we are getting for Honor and the oaths of the Knights Radiant make us consider everything else to be less complex.
  23. Am I imagining this? One of Sazed's spiritual eyebrows twiched when he wrote that letter and the last encounter of Hoid and Valor was not just for tea and cookies. What do you think?
  24. Right. But neither is it necessarily unvalorous, while it is dishonorable Honor may not have an issue with that. Right. So how about this for really opposed reactions Armed revolutionary insurrection against a lord you swore allegiance to Honor - traitors deserve a horrible death Valor - bring it on, dudes!
  25. We have a clue in Warlight. So what happens if you combine war and growth? Should we name that Shard Empire or Conquest? Faced with that prospect I would take Hoid's attitude. Better burn that solar system than let this happen.
