Shardcast: Cultivationlight!? FanX Words of Brandon P1
Child of Hodor commented on Chaos's article in Shardcast
I feel like there is some of Cultivation in the way the Radiants work. They don't swear all their Oaths at once. There is a progression of oaths and the further along the progression the greater the power they gain. Progression, or Growth of Character is the core of the KR ideals. The Character part is of Honor the Growth part is of Cultivation. Some KR spren like Wyndle are so heavily Cultivation, I feel like she was involved. Plus, there is a painting Shallan recognizes as the "pagan" goddess Cultivation in the giant room Shallan confronts Re-Sephir in, in Urithiru home base of the KR. That isn't to say Stormlight isn't pure Honor, I just see a significant Cultivation influence on the KR. Wild guess: the Stone and Crem are her access points. There are quite a few references to "spren of stone" in Roshar. The Listeners, Horneaters and Shin all talk about them in their mythologies. The Shin worship the stone which is at least in part because they were told long ago to stay in Shinovar where there is soil to walk on, but there may be more going on (isn't there always ). EDIT: Argent already addressed crem in the thread. Yeah, if I had a choice between using magic powered by inhaling beautiful light that made me glow or powered by a brown paste that seems like a mix of sediment and filth I would choose the light every time. -
who and where are the other heralds?
Child of Hodor replied to TousenShadowForged's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think we'll glimpse the unmet Heralds through the book 4 & 5 prologues. I suspect the 9 that remained on Roshar were all in Kholinar the night of the prologue. 5 seemed to be in the area: Jezrien was hanging out drunk near the statues, Nale and Kalak were official guests at the feast. Chana may have been Liss the assassin meeting with Jasnah in the palace. Shalash had recently broken her statue in the palace, it had not been replaced yet. The ones I listed above had very different reasons for being there it was not a coordinated effort, but if that many were there by fate or Fortune or whatever then the other 4 were probably in Kholinar that night. -
What would the other Shards be?
Child of Hodor replied to Joseph Archuleta's topic in Cosmere Discussion
@Tglassy I agree intellect is more straightforward and the same idea. I went with synonyms because Brandon used Odium instead of Hatred which was the name he originally had in mind. That's a good catch on the metal charts. Brandon likes 16 because of how divisible it is. He came up with the metal chart first and then the Shards. However, I don't think they'll have the same category types because he said he split Adonalsium based on it's nature which to him was "personality". That doesn't really work with the metal chart category names. Brandon has said the Shards do not all have opposites. If Adonalsium was composed of all offsetting intents it would have really struggle to do anything, like Harmony currently struggles to act in Mistborn Era 2. Adonalsium created most everything in the Cosmere, it was a fairly active entity. -
Good point! I felt the "don't try to save everyone" part was implicit in the first part, but someone like Kaladin probably needs it spelled out. It kind of reminds me of Jack Shepard, whose father was a doctor, from LOST. He's too hard on himself when he fails, his father tells him not to try to save everyone. His father is a huge jerk to him in this scene, but there is a kernel of truth to it.

Cool idea! I expect when we learn her name I'll slap myself in the forehead like I did when Ashyn - Shin was brought up. I figured Ashyn was the Tranquiline Halls, but I didn't realize the name Shin was reference to Ashyn. It was staring me in the face for 3 books and I didn't see it. We figure Dawn refers to Dawn of Civilization, ancient times. But I could see it being her name.

How can they be looking for Vax on Roshar when Vax is clearly the Cognitive Shadow of Leras’s dagger?
-
I think they are a self-interested party. I wouldn’t call anyone so eager to murder a new member and anyone in their way as good. They kill Shallan’s carriage driver over very little. In their attempt to kill Jasnah they bound and were in the process of executing everyone on the ship. I realize they farmed this assasination attempt out to a non-member who subcontractored it out, but still. I suspect they are a world hopping trade/crime syndicate. Their symbol is 3 diamonds merging, the three realms overlapping like a perpendicularity which is key to world hopping. We know there is significant interplanetary trade. Mraize collects investiture from all over the Cosmere, he is fascinated by objects of great power. Mraize doesn’t seem at all interested in helping defeat Odiim or save Roshar. He was glad Shallan got rid of the Unmade because it made Urithiru safer to search and discover secrets in. In a letter to Shallan Mraize talks about the voidbringers return and how “we will use this” to their advantage. It provides an opportunity to grab power, that’s it. They seem motivated by amassing more power for its own sake and not for a noble goal. if I had to guess I’d say they are specifically after a Dawnshard.

Their schedule is like the Highstorms, regular and unpredictable at the same time. Like Highstorms, Shardcasts are also magical! -
WOB: Kelsier's stuck on Scadrial (!)
Child of Hodor replied to robardin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This could refer to Nazh. Nazh and Kriss met Kelsier in MB:SH and told him where the Ire are. Nazh must have come across the Ire prior to this. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Nazrilof -
What would the other Shards be?
Child of Hodor replied to Joseph Archuleta's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Awesome! I took a crack at this in the thread linked above and I too had difficulty placing Endowment in a category, you may be right that she is in her own. I had a hard time placing Ambition, it is a state of mind, but it is more focused on achieving for ones self while the Odium, Honor and Devotion are focused on others. I feel like it might fit with the Hide/Survive shard. I speculated in my post that the Survival Shard could be Fear, but Brandon was later asked and said it is not. In another WoB Brandon mentions it being "quite intelligent" in it's decision. Looking at the synonyms for intelligence I like Perception and Intuition. Wisdom could also work. I think this is an aspect of the self like Ambition. I thought the missing change / lifecycle Shard could be Ingenuity before I saw this WoB. I think it is along those lines. -

Child of Hodor replied to robardin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, they can all potentially world hop, but not without doing something special first. A Spren bonded to someone who can already world hop, like Hoid, can probably go with since their souls are bonded, they are part of the same being at the spiritual level. It probably has to do with the interplay of Connection and Identity that determines how connected a being is to different investiture throughout the Cosmere. They have to either link to a different planets investiture or "blank" part of their identity & connection to sever the link to the planet they are on. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Identity -
It seems the proliferation of better handguns and was the main driver in swords going away. I would expect Era 3 mistborn and onward to have very little in the way of swords since Era 2 already has decent handguns. A combat knife however ... Swords were an important part of combat even against foes in heavy armor. The focus became more on thrusting than hack and slash. 8. Swords were not primary weapons during the Middle Ages.

Dalinar heavily implies that he'll lay bare his whole life in the meandering preface to his autobiography which is parceled out in the epigraphs. Him causing her death is his main reason for going to the Nightwatcher. Would be a huge omission. Btw, is Dalinar's preface the worst Cosmere epigraphs? I love the Chapter 2 epigraph "I needed to write it anyway", something about it just cuts to the heart for me. Most of it is pointless rephrasing of the same thing and feels like padding. Reading it all at once it really hits me: he is using a lot of words to say nothing. Oathbringer has more chapters than any of the other books, so not all the epigraphs can be winners and Dalinar DID just learn how to read and write so I don't want to be too hard on the guy . https://coppermind.net/wiki/Oathbringer/Epigraphs

Many aspects of a personality could be a big problem when isolated from context. With 6 Shards unknown at least one will be a "problem" Shard. The final Cosmere books may need a new antagonist assuming Rayse kicks the bucket and Odium is combined with other Intents by the time SA wraps up. Autonomy would be a good one. Assuming they are Trell, they seem to be poised to be a MB Era 3 villain. They may not be around in the same form for MB era 4. While there are still a lot of Cosmere books left, 6 Shards feels like a lot to remain unknown until after SA back 5. I wonder if one will show up sooner than we think. @Calderis A Terror shard would be a lot of fun! It could be justifiable as a part of Adolnasium because inspiring fear in his followers if they defy Him could be part of a God's personality and a God could fear for the well being of his followers. Spreading fear, distrust and paranoia would be a cool manifestation of the Intent. As long as we steer clear of having a germaphode Shard that can't stop washing it's hands and makes everyone carry a bottle of Purell with them.

So, what did Nale swear?
Child of Hodor replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
Traitor could be about the Unmade. The chapter 86 one is in a sequence of random topics as far chapters. But it is in the “Book of the second drawer” part of the diagram which the other Unmade diagram comments are in. -
So, what did Nale swear?
Child of Hodor replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I agree. There is a WoR epigraph, one from the diagram ch. 86 “one is almost certainly a traitor to the others”. Probably about Ishar. I think he’s lying to the other Heralds because he’s become the inverse of what he once was. Not sure if he consciously chose to help Odium. He’s giving them terrible advice that he knows is wrong on some level. -

One of the Iriali’s previous worlds was the threefold land. He gets a new name when he’s worked off his current one.

What happened to Evi’s brother Toh? The Coppermind article on him doesn’t say. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Toh He drops out of the story after Evi and Dalinar get married. They were on the run seeking asylum, I would think he’d stay in Alethkar to take advantage of that protection. I doubt he’d just move back home. I’m not thinking he’s secretly important and we never learn anything about Dalinar’s other relatives like his parents, but I just find it odd he was introduced and then disappeared. He never visited his nephews nor does he get a cursory mention as far as I can find. My wild theory is that the Iriali queen is accusing Dalinar of theft because Toh went and told the Iriali that Dalinar was given shards in exchange for protecting Evi and he got her killed.

Brandon’s inconsistent use of terminology?
Child of Hodor replied to Fanghur Rahl's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, this could have been avoided. I will admit I am blanking on a better name that's catchy without giving away their true nature. Gemblade, gemplate since the modern ones need gems to work. Gembearer doesn't work with gems being currency on Roshar. Everyone has them. Gemwielder? Hexadiety - a cursed name Chunks of Adonalsium. Vessels are Chunk-Buckets -
Well there goes most of this theory! There is a disconnect between the ? and answer, but Brandon seems to be answering when Taln got back to Roshar. He does go to make his announcement in Kholinar, but he was "back" for months before hand. Heralds probably do go to their assigned Dawncity, but it does not seem to be a thing where they "warp" or are otherwise magically pulled to one automatically.

Child of Hodor replied to robardin's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Shades (Threnody Cognitive Shadows) Heralds and Spren also have this problem. I would have thought spiking a body to get connection to the Physical realm would solve the problem, but that's not the case. Heralds can "world hop" within the Roshar system, but not outside of it. Vasher is a Returned (another type of cognitive shadow) and can world hop, but must have figured out what he needed to do. Maybe gaining Connection to something outside Nalthis, which would be hard if he can't leave the system until he gets Connection to something outside it. Here is a WoB with @Calderis's favorite thing: Brandon using "Soul" to describe a Cognitive Realm entity. -
Brandon’s inconsistent use of terminology?
Child of Hodor replied to Fanghur Rahl's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Cognitive Shadow vexes me, but he is consistent with the usage it's just that the term is for a category that's so broad in the way they manifest. They're "Mind Ghosts", but they are all seem so different Shades, Kelsier, Returned, Heralds, Fused, Stormfather. The differences seem to come from what they're stapled to, how they're stapled (hemalurgy etc.) and how much they've degraded. His use of Shard and what constitutes "on a planet" or "in residence" in the Patji explanation made my head hurt. Where Patji is a Shard and is on the planet during Sixth of Dusk, but no Shard is on the planet during the story, nor has a Shard ever been in residence on the planet. I think I may know what he's getting at, like it's an Avatar that Adonalsium created pre-shattering and it defaulted to Autonomy when Adonalsium shattered, so no Shard ever settled there, but an entity that's an avatar of a shard is there. Or Autonomy created the avatar elsewhere and sent it to the planet. If that's not along the lines of what he's getting at then I have no idea. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/315-general-reddit-2018/#e9385 -
*facepalm* I totally missed the new WoB in the thread, thanks for quoting it. I assume they have to go back on their own one way or another and aren't warped back like when they die on Roshar and automatically go back to Braize. They were never meant to go back to Roshar from Braize, the Oathpact was meant to permanently seal Heralds and Fused on Braize. Honor wouldn't have a reason to give them an easy means of coming back to Roshar since he overlooked the idea of them breaking in the first place. Odium is "in residence" on Braize, there should be a perpendicularity. The most likely way for them to get back is through there.
