  1. Magic can only be accessed while hiccuping. The longer the hiccups last, the greater the power of the magic. The magic itself is based off of blood rituals and sacrifices. Hiccuping Mages carry a special knife with them to draw blood and use it for a variety of spells. Glass, the colour orange, and the letter G.
  2. Supposedly things begin to click into place by the second or third, but I've had no desire to read them after finishing Gardens of the Moon. I found it to be a vastly unsatisfying read, and that generally does not give me impetus to continue with the series anytime soon.
  3. I wrote 23 words last night, then went to bed. This isn't bad - I had been up since 4am Sunday, and my goal was simply "write one word at midnight, then go to sleep." So I'm 22 words ahead.
  4. You know, I keep meaning to do the same thing? I just never seem to get around to to it..
  5. This seems very likely to me. Remember, Odium is Hate. One doesn't need to be the exact opposite or even a near opposite to oppose hate. My guess, based off of no evidence whatsoever, is that the Almighty was paired, somehow, with Cultivation, that they are aspects that compliment each other. So what compliments Cultivation?
  6. Despite being on TWG, I don't know you, and thus I don't know what it means to put up with you. Your intro has thus failed Welcome! Bathrooms are on the right, past the soda machine.
  7. I've already said it a dozen times, but I'll say it a dozen more. Congrats you two!
  8. Don't listen to them! It's a ruse to lure you in! Hurry, get out while you still can, lest it be too late!!! Don't succumb to the fate the rest of us are in! Hurry! You can still survive....Uh oh...i hear them! they're coming! Run, get out! GO! hurry! don't worry abou..... [radio static] (also, welcome! ) *puts away the taser and radios the men i white coats to remove the downed Eerongal from the thread* Welcome. Great to have you here. Ignore this riff raff...
  9. Expect an add from Shiver at some point soon, then ^^ And this will be my first NaNo. I missed last year due to... something I can't remember, but I've been planning for this one since January. And then I went and started writing Wavepainter, my planned NaNo, back in April, so... yeah. Probably just gonna wing it this year xD
  10. I am, although the book I was planning to write for it, I actually started earlier this year. I don't know exactly what I'm going to do this year, but I do have a few ideas I might give a shot.
  11. Hmmm "And all I got was Horneater Stew" actually works pretty well. And it's nice and confusing for those who haven't read the book, which is added win!
  12. Thought it looked like Photoshop. How many layers?
  13. It's not the theme, actually. It's the length of the 'All I got was..." that throws it all off. 'Lousy Horneater Stew' has a few too many syllables. With this kind of gag, people are used to seeing 'Lousy T-Shirt', which is almost half the syllables of 'Lousy Horneater Stew', and the pacing throws it off. A really long 'lousy' thing can work, but it would need to be even longer than 'Horneater Stew' for that kind of humour to come into effect. Some other suggestions? Perhaps some cracked armour and 'All I got was this lousy ShardPlate'. I had other ideas earlier, but I can't really remember them right now.
  14. Nah, we're all corrupt and power-hungry. Why do you think we started this site, because we're fans of Brandon Sanderson? Nah. We just wanted to be able to exercise this desire to subjugate in a socially acceptable manner.
  15. Boneshaker, by Cherie Priest. It's not bad. Not great, but not bad. Steampunk and zombies - what more could you want? I suppose a more interesting story to go with it, but it's entertaining enough. Also reading The Dragonbone Chair, by Tad Williams, the first book of Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. About 70 pages in and wondering where the heck the story is going...
  16. Yeah, Malazan is... hard to get into. At present, I've only read the first book, and honestly have had no real desire to move on to book two, despite numerous people saying it was one of the best novels they have ever read. I'll get to it, eventually, but the series itself has yet to grab me. The characters I liked in Gardens of the Moon didn't get enough screen time, and many times I was left wondering why I should care about what I just read. Personally, I wouldn't say it has a steep learning curve - it has a steep caring curve. It's hard for me to decide which one I liked better, although I have to say the ending of Red Seas was one of the most satisfying I have read in years. I put that book down at just stared in wonder for ten minutes straight, and it alone was enough to re-affirm to me that I want to be a writer some day. Agreed. 'Nuff said. The first one was the most tolerable. I wouldn't say it was good, but it was tolerable and a fairly entertaining, if very derivative story. I never made it past book five, though. Sword of Truth was the series that made me abandon my 'any series I start, I finish' rule. Servant of a Dark God was good, but not great. I don't care particularly for the authors writing style, but the ideas are great. I think with this book, the ideas behind it were far better than the execution. I have high hopes for Brown, though, and as this was his first book, his writing can only get better from here. I know I've said this before, but yes. Jim Butcher is one of my favourite authors. That sense of satisfaction I mentioned with Red Seas Under Red Skies? Every single one of Butcher's books has given me that feeling. The Dresden Files and Codex Alera are among the best books I've read this year, if not the last five years. I disagree that the later books of Codex Alera aren't as good as the earlier - I felt the entire series just got better and better. Even more so, though, it ended at just the right place. Of these guys, the only one I've read is Abercrombie, and he's great. His books are a little hard to get into, but the writing itself and the characters are brilliant and were more than enough to hook me. Best Served Cold, which I am about halfway through right now, is fantastic. And now, so I'm not merely responding to Andrew here, I'll leave a few recommendations of my own. Palimpsest, by Catherynne M. Valente is beautifully written and a work of pure brilliance. It's hard to describe (Elitist Book Reviews does a good job with it) but definitely worth the read. A bit of a warning - if you don't like sex in your literature, you probably won't like this. There's a lot of it, all integral to the plot, but a lot of it nonetheless. One of my favourite series of all-time is The Saga of Tiger and Del, by Jennifer Roberson. I read these in high school, and I was hooked by the third line of the first page of the first book. There are six total in the series, and I devoured them in five days. It's rather classic sword-and-sorcery fantasy, with more of an emphasis on the swords than the sorcery, and I cannot recommend it enough.
  17. What was this done with/in?
  18. I like the work done on it. The images are great. Only issue is the back, for me. While it looks good, 'All I Got Was This Horneater Stew' felt a little... weak. Okay, very weak. Love the front image in particular, though
  19. Pirate Monkey Clan
  20. Welcome to 17th Shard! A pleasure to have you here - you've posted in fanart, which means I have something to moderate finally!
  21. (First of all, just because I'm OCD like that, I've corrected your post to spell 'Oathpact' correctly. Hope you don't mind.) The Almighty is dead, and I'm pretty sure Odium is on Roshar currently. Which is why the Almighty is dead, and probably why we should be worrying about Cultivation. If he's not on Roshar currently, and it was stated somewhere in the book, then I must have missed it.

  23. Isn't Davinna yours? She's freaking NUTS. Yes she is. And yes she is! Exactly how I designed her.
  24. Also listen to me. Because my characters rock.
