@Ixthos yep exactly that. You put it much better than I did. That was the scene that stuck out to me but I couldn’t find it so was hesitant to include it in case I was misremembering. But yeah, that’s not healthy and I sets off alarm bells in my head.

I don't know if it was intentional or not but when I first read WoA, in the back of my mind was the question of whether Brandon chose Zane to make a joke on just how close it was to the word 'sane'. Oathbringer spoilers:

I toyed around with the idea of Sadeas being involved in this plot for a while but was never able to fully resolve the issue I found. But here it is in unedited thought below: I think there is a case to be considered where Tanalan was telling the truth about Sadeas being the Highprince he was working with, however, I don't believe that he would have been working with Tanalan because he wanted him to win. Instead, Sadeas could have sided with Tanalan as a way to further provoke him in his rebellion against Gavilar, resulting in the King taking more drastic means to quelling the revolt. A lot of this is based on a quote from the original attack on Rathalas during Gavilar's unification campaign. Here's the thing: Tanalan and Rathalas have been the rebellious outlier since the beginning. For years after Tanalan's return, Gavilar tries to negotiate with Rathalas without success and negotiation obviously wasn't working. The other Highprinces were starting to question whether swearing their allegiance to Gavilar was worth it and their next move was very much going to be based on the outcome of the Rift's rebellion. Sadeas, however, was devoted to Gavilar's plans to a united Alethkar and no doubt has little issue with sacrificing a city if it means that the threat of rebellion from the Eastern Crownlands is quelled. So, Sadeas allies with Tanalan in secret, convincing him he has an ally in one of the King's closest confidents, and by doing so, pushing the rebellion to stand too firmly against the King. In turn, Gavilar sends Dalinar, his infamously murder capable brother, to end the rebellion and destroy the city. This was Sadeas' plan - to use the Rift as an example that rebellion would not be tolerated and would be dealt with brutally. He wanted the Blackthorn to be sent to the Rift to cause destruction and chaos and engineered a situation where that would be the eventual outcome. The timing of the different armies arrivals also seems to lend itself to the above plans. It all works out remarkedly in Tanalan's favour with Dalinar's army arriving early and Sadeas' arriving several hours afterwards. There's even a line about how most of the events wouldn't have happened if Sadeas' army hadn't arrived later than Dalinar's. There are a number of issues that I have with this theory: - I'm disinclined to believe that the escaped caravaneers weren't meant to be some sort of trap as they were dressed in the Sadeas house colours. Why give yourself away? Dalinar would believe Sadeas over Tanalan at this point, so what other purpose would Sadeas have to dress his men this way? - I also agree that Sadeas didn't want to remove Dalinar from the picture until after Gavilar's death, so trying to have him killed at this point doesn't make any sense to me. I really can't see him being a big enough threat to Sadeas at this point for Sadeas to try and have him killed, and even if he was trying to assassinate him, there would be easier ways for him to do it. - As Calderis said, this storyline is finished. There seems little to be gained by having a hidden conspiracy here. Overall, I don't think that Sadeas was the Highprince involved. There's just too many rebuttals I see in the theory. BUT, I like that someone else had similar thinking that I did. And also that there was a chance for me to post my dumb theory

Characters you didn't care for at first but now love?
LadyLameness replied to Xero stormz's topic in Cosmere Discussion
A few people have said Elend and amusingly I went the opposite way with him. I loved him initially and then by the end of HoA didn't care all that much anymore. Biggest person for me was Dalinar. Even now, knowing that I eventually get hooked into his story, I have trouble reading through his sections in WoK. But when I get to the more recent stuff... gimme, gimme, gimme. -
The battle for Urithiru's lost library (Shallan and the boys VS Re-Shephir)

When I was reading WoA, I actually did think it was Ruin behind the rumours. I assumed he was spreading the rumours as a way to perpetuate the thought that Vin was special and reinforce the likelihood of her being the Hero of Ages as it would increase his chances of being released.

[OB] Willshapers have Cognitive Cohesion
LadyLameness replied to MountainKing's topic in Stormlight Archive
I would agree with this. I could see it being easier for someone with the surge of Transformation, with the surge acting similar to a chemical catalyst. I do think you need to have access to some sort of Investiture though to be able to get beads to manifest (I'm not sure if you were implying that or not). I can't see your average non-Radiant Rosharian being able to do no matter how hard they tried. Scadrial is about as difficult to navigate as Roshar. SH Spoilers: This WOB's referring to the pictures Shallan draws of the mercenaries correct? In that case, you know what it reminds me of? Malatium. I'm rereading Mistborn, so everything reminds me of Mistborn -
[OB] Willshapers have Cognitive Cohesion
LadyLameness replied to MountainKing's topic in Stormlight Archive
It makes me wonder if they can do something similar to Rioting and Soothing in Mistborn. I would definitely classify that as an ability to shape others by your will and I think it also works with the Oathbringer quote listed above where it says 'taking it for granted that others would agree'. I have always wondered about where the name 'Willshaper' came from for the order and like the idea of it being based around cognitive cohesion. Though to be clear, I don't think that it would be exactly the same as emotional Allomancy (I cannot see Brandon recycling a system like that) but perhaps it is something similar. -
What magic system would you like to possess?
LadyLameness replied to Alorion's topic in General Brandon Discussion
My gut response is Allomancy, but that's probably a combination of me rereading Mistborn and it being the first system with which I fell in love. Realistically, Feruchemy would be the way I would go (though I would use F-Brass the opposite to @Slimy_Slider I'll put up with a 2 degree morning if it means I can get some sweet sweet coldness during those 45 degree summer days) -
I'm rereading Mistborn Era 1 at the moment and will probably do Era 2 afterwards. Or maybe SA, if I've gotten the books back from the friend who borrowed them. Outside of the Cosmere: the new Rangers Apprentice book has dropped and I am super excited to read that. There's also new Shadowhunter short stories that have come out that I've been putting off till after exams. Along the same thread, I'm going to reread the Dark Artifices at some point in the next few months in preparation for the last book to come out in November! I've been holding off my reading until after exams BUT my last one is on Thursday morning and then I am free!

[OB] Things you'd like to see in book 4 (poll)
LadyLameness replied to The Harlem Worldhoppers's topic in Stormlight Archive
There are a bunch of things I want to see that I feel would happen right after the battle in Thaylen city, so I don't know how many of them we'll get on screen. Vasher and Nightblood reunion 'So why have we let the Assassin in White join again?' Skar and Drehy returning to Urithiru -
I love this imagery so much I think a lot of factors depend on who is invading who. It's worth considering the locations of the perpendicularities (though keeping within the rule of 'you can't force a bottle neck') - the one known perpendicularity on Scadrial is smack bang in the middle of Elendel so the Scadrian's would lose their capital and that would probably affect their ability to create weapons. The tech of Southern Scadrial would probably make up for this to a certain extent though. For Scadrian's to go to Roshar they either need to go through the Horneater peaks (where there's some unknown weird/presumably Odium related thing happening) or take their chances with Honor's perpendicularity which would be... interesting. Wow, writing it out like that makes it seem not so great for Scadrial. (How did I end up finding an argument against the side I'm rooting for???)

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...

The GM of my Shadowrun RPG group gave us a Shardblade. He hasn't read SA so it was completely accidental and now I keep getting weird looks because of exactly how eager I am about this development. -
Deep Dark Secrets
LadyLameness replied to Stormblessed Dolphin's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I force myself to read the epigraph's and interlude's because I know they're important but I really, really don't care about them on my first read. Once I know the whole plot though, I love going back and pulling them apart because they're not going to slow down the plot. I love Era 1 Mistborn, but reading WoA feels like pulling teeth. -
I doubt it could be done without them noticing. Or, the only point I could see that happening is if the person had multiple Breath's but hadn't yet reached the First Heightening. There seems to be a fairly noticeable difference when someone loses all their Breath and become's drab and the First Heightening allows for you to know the number of Breath's someone else is carrying and presumably how many you have as well. I wonder if a Larkin could discriminate between Breath and Divine Breath. Would all additional Breath's have to be stolen before a Divine Breath could be stolen? Or could it straight up go round killing Returned?

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
LadyLameness replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
My housemate and I share a birthday and she set up a Facebook event with the word 'Spikey' in it. (For non-Cosmere related reasons) I'm going to bake chocolate chip cookies and giggle manically to myself every time someone eats one. There is maybe two people coming who may get the joke. -
Coinshots and Lurcher's would be a nasty surprise when they are first encountered, if the Rosharian's weren't aware of their abilities. Imagine being thrown backwards suddenly (say by your belt buckle) without any knowledge of how it's happened. Or having a sword fly at you from across the battlefield. It's not overly intuitive, without repeat observation, that it's metal that's being affected and not just 'this person can move all things with their mind'. I think Scadrian's would win hands down. Bands of Mourning spoilers: Though, without even considering Scadrial Investiture, I think the Rosharian's would do poorly simply for the fact that Scadrian's have guns and explosives.

When you use aspects of the Cosmere as examples to understand your university courses. Nalthis and Awakening make very interesting puzzles when delving into the science of colour and perception. -
Shardcast: JordanCon Words of Brandon Analysis
LadyLameness commented on Chaos's article in Shardcast
With Ruin, I’ve always assumed the reason he had issues manifesting in the physical was to do with his inability to find or access the Atium catche. My memory of First Era is super sketchy but from memory the atium is at some point described as Ruin’s body - because he couldn’t locate it, he couldn’t transition to the physical realm. Maybe Shard’s can only manifest this way in the location of their physical body? You guys mentioned the Everstorm and whether it was needed for him to manifest - the Everstorm could be Odium’s version of Atium. It always seemed weird to me that the Everstorm turns up and then just sits there and doesn’t do anything (except transport the Fused from Shademar). Why doesn’t it hit Thaylen City and cause a bunch of death and destruction? It might kill some of Odium’s troops but they’ll just be reborn in the next Everstorm. But if it’s the physical body of Odium then it makes a bit more sense why it turns up, does nothing and then disappears. -
That's amazing! My boss brought her five year old to work yesterday, and while he may have driven her up the wall, my colleagues and I found him absolutely adorable and he brightened up the entire office with his loveable antics. He's just learning to write and wrote all of our names on the whiteboard and he was so proud of himself.

I think this would depend largely on whether or not you're a passive carrier or whether it'll interact with your system. My bet is it would just kill you. (And/or be extremely unenjoyable)

How did you imagine Spheres when you first read this book series?
LadyLameness replied to a topic in Stormlight Archive
I was also picturing marbles but I've always imagined them as being a uniform neutral brown/beige colour with a gem set in one side (the same way a gem would be set into a ring). But I've also always imagined that the bigger the denomination the bigger the size of the whole sphere as well as a bigger gem. -
So how did people figure out that Zahel was Vasher?
LadyLameness replied to Necessary Eagle's topic in Stormlight Archive
It may also be a translational issue if Zahel's using magic to translate to Alethi. If that's the case, I wonder what Zahel's colour references would be in Nalthis? Edit: @ScarletSabre my brain's also always gone to Zah-heel! I somehow always seem to come up with some bizarre, nowhere near correct, pronunciation of names so I'm glad someone else heard something similar -
Physical and Mechanical Investiture Access?
LadyLameness replied to ReadAndFindOut's question in Cosmere Q&A
@RShara Extrapolating on that, once an Aon is set could anyone use it? For example could a normal human turn Aon Ien on and off? My instinctive reaction is “woah that would probably be super dangerous, so let’s hope not”. But we know some humans lived in Elantris and that seems extremely difficult if they’re unable to affect any Aon’s and have to wait for an Elantrian every time they have to interact with an Aon. So maybe?- 13 replies
