  1. It's likely to be both. The gemhearts growing is likely an example of nature cultivation magic and the fabrials a civilization magic e.g. instant communication.
  2. Apparently the forum dislikes www.madeuplinks.com as opposed to http://www.madeuplinks.com
  3. Then, with reluctance, for you and the community it is done. Though I'll note on the earlier issue of Aons it is right that they were confused as Brandon hasn't explained the issue. A fuller quote does not change that. The more you know the more questions arise.
  4. http://www.businessinsider.com/too-many-choices-are-bad-for-business-2012-12?op=1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magical_Number_Seven,_Plus_or_Minus_Two More options means more confusion. It's good for veterans (aka you) who have the experience to slog through the many options but not so good for newbies. Simplicity is good. What do others think, especially those who are less experienced with the Cosmere, would you prefer all the links in the text?
  5. I added the Hoid stuff and the Aon stuff. I left out the later stuff- Brandon doesn't directly explain or confirm or hint how you would get Sel (Elantris and TES world) magic to work on other worlds so it is not relevant to my post, and I am trying to keep it theory free. If you can go to a signing perhaps you could ask him and your quote would go on the page. On the lack of links, I am trying to keep the main body of the post very readable to newcomers. Lots of links in it makes it look rather imposing- are you expected to read every link before you go on? I like the stream of consciousness effect, like a very long monologue by Brandon.
  6. This is a list of relevant quotes on the Cosmere that it would help any newbie to read. In another thread a Cosmere 201 was requested. Here it is. No theories. Just quotes. http://www.theoryland.com/wheel-of-time-interview-search.php Most quotes were found from searching this. If you have any quotes you believe should be added just say. A lot of interesting stuff came from his reddit ask me anything, our questioning of him, and signings where brave 17thsharders got quotes from brandon. Some of the quotes from our QA of Brandon aren't in theorybase so it's very worthwhile to read the whole thing. We also got some quotes from him on twitter which are in theoryland. http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/k0fp8/iama_professional_fantasy_novelist_named_brandon/ http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/2383-qa-with-brandon-sanderson/ http://www.17thshard.com/forum/forum/27-events-signings-and-stalking/ And of course the books are useful sources too, particularly the ebooks. Even if you have the physical books you can navigate the ebooks better to search for things. http://www.amazon.com/Brandon-Sanderson/e/B001IGFHW6 Onwards. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=428#10 Harmony, Mistborn 3 Shai, TES Brandon http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=727#45 http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/1ced7z/iamstilla_novelist_named_brandon_sanderson_ama/c9hpuvd http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/383-the-ultimate-list-of-questions-for-brandon/?p=57653 www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=977#180 https://soundcloud.com/gavin-king-4/brandon-spotlight-pcc-13 49minutes http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=428#63 WOK http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/1ced7z/iamstilla_novelist_named_brandon_sanderson_ama/c9hh5j1?context=3 http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/2383-qa-with-brandon-sanderson/page__st__80__p__42202#entry42202 http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/1ced7z/iamstilla_novelist_named_brandon_sanderson_ama/c9fvv7t?context=3 On bendalloy bubbles. 7. No. When I was thinking of every possible well attested to connection between the realms I rushed in speaking and misspoke on shadows- I was wrongly using the term shadows to describe a connection between the realm rather than one realm being the source of a lesser being on another. It's nothing to do with my theories on the collective unconsciousness. With the other thing I was trying to provide entertaining pictures for people reading the thread who would otherwise get bored. Perhaps this happy shoe would work for everything has souls? http://i.imgur.com/2Sfbrv3.jpg On topic of the thread, what we would really need would be a short list of quotes from the books and Brandon which would explain the main features of the Cosmere. That would be theory free. Harmony Brandon. Ars Arcanum, Alloy of Law.
  8. Oops. My bad. http://www.gnostic-centre.com/Plato.jpg For anyone reading this confused, Brandon has said the magic system of his worlds uses the philosophy of plato's cave.
  9. I was not saying my original, pre book theory that all souls would be made with modified souls of another was correct. The red smoke of the soul stamp was similar to the black smoke of the sword destroying breaths, and likely had a similar origin.
  10. She has refereed to the soulstamps in totality as the emperor's soul, and the souls of stamps does touch the objects. She does say she rebuilt the emperor's soul. Edit. I had to leave mid post. I don't believe that most soulstamps work purely by that method, though prebook I suspected they may. I imagined some sort of sacrifice might be needed to make the emperor. A soul for a soul. The emperor's soul was repeatedly called a soul, so I think that is a soul. Anyway, on our discussion. Your original point was that there would be no human soul removal. My point is that your phrasing didn't specify human soul removal (and nor did my intent) and the emperor's soul was removed, with red smoke smiliar to the black smoke of a shardblade removing a soul, and placed on Gaotona repeatedly. Agree to disagree I guess? And perhaps you should be more precise with your shoe eating phrases in the future.
  11. Alfie watched the food as it came in. He swayed, mesmerized by the redness of the meat, the smell of the juices the way the fur rustled in the wind, the... he stopped burning steel and he saw his image of electrum. His mind really was good at filling in the gaps. "Thank you for the food. I am really hungry. And on who we should send, does it matter much? As long as they have tin they could listen from the roof easily enough."
  12. I had presumed that the magic would work either by rewriting some object's soul with magic and transferring it into a person, temporarily or long term, to give an impression. Edit. Then would the original soul be kicked out? Would the object you transferred the soul from lose its soul? I wasn't particularly picky about it being a person since I was aware even back then that everything in Brandon Sanderson's world seemed to have a soul. I am just as happy with removing the soul of a soul stamp from a person as a person. Edit. The red smoke of a soul resisting a forging tastes as sweet as the black smoke of nightblood removing a breath.
  13. You were very adamant on it being an artificial, though I didn't care that much about that (what is a real soul? In a way, are her souls not more real than our silly natural souls?) - I was concerned if it took time to train a new soul. In the book the new soul grafts onto your old soul, and if compatible your soul has no issues melding with it and it is like you have a whole new soul but better. Presumably breaths likewise just bring out the beauty of some of your natural soul. Whether the souls are artificial or not is immaterial to the argument- souls are transferred, removed and given, and contrary to my theory there are no ill effects. The soul is accepted or rejected. And contrary to your ideas, souls are removed. We didn't agree on that, but we had a side discussion about the mistborn rpg which list a quite wide range of attributes you can steal from the soul which we agreed on. Aka, your spiritual essence involves many innately human things. So as a consolation prize to Senor Feesh spiritual particles do probably act somewhat like protons and neutrons. They can be arranged into useful attributes which may well be controlled by how you see yourself.
  14. She removes her soul. As you said, she creates several fully functional souls out of soulstone and sticks them into people. I think you owe me some shoe eating. As an honorable man I am sure you will not try to avoid the eating of shoes. Our discussion did cover some useful ground. For example with reference to the rpg and breaths you can steal a lot of attributes- strength, emotional fortitude. We also talked about how breaths worked- a lot of quotes about how they imitated human form. I'm not sure how his theory would be distinguished from ours though. If gravity happens because the earth sees itself as connected to a person (cognitive) and so uses spirit power to connect itself what would be the difference between that and if gravity happens because the earth is connected to people (spiritual) and so exerts a spiritual attraction. Does a breath increase emotional fortitude because spiritual power increases emotional fortitude or because cognition arranges spiritual power to increase emotional fortitude? It is clear that much spirit energy is controlled by cognition, but I am not sure what test you could do to see how much. That is the mark of a theory. It is testable. Edit. I do agree with Kurkistan that it is likely that the spiritual realm has innate bonding qualities, the quotes clearly say that, I'm just not sure how you would test that they weren't a result of the cognitive realm.
  15. If you tweak the it a bit I think it's acceptable. the physical plane is a linked to idealized forms in the cognitive/spiritual plane and as such can only easily transform you into ideal forms which have some representation in the object's cognitive/spiritual self. For example in TES a broken windows is connected to a idealized form of itself in the spiritual/cognitive realm in that it wants to see itself be beautiful My theory, for any others reading, made it slightly larger, suggesting that the success of your transformation was dependent on what others thought as well as what you thought. It also used the terminology 'shadow' which Brandon has used to say that some cognitive beings only have a shadow on the physical plane.
  16. I recently had a dream that I was in the Rithmatist. Anyone else had any fun Brandon Sanderson dreams?
  17. I suppose. Ok, everything has a soul, which can be interacted with using magic. You can make physical changes by changing the spiritual nature of an object.
  18. Kaladin plunged into the depth of the building, Odium's lackeys hot in his tail. Once they'd found Urithiru in their desperate quest they fought it was over. But it turned out they weren't the only ones who'd found it... who thought the city would have been here? These thoughts tumbled over his mind as he slid down the crem covered wall deep into the earth. Eventually he reached the bottom, using a three quarters lashing to slow his fall just before. He landed softly. Was this the place? The fabled vault? That was the location Shallan had told him before she had ascended to take up the lost mantle of Cultivation. Perhaps he could find a weapon in here strong enough to protect his companions from the black storm. He walked further in, the darkness tight around his skin. He missed Syl. She would have been there to help until... so much blood. He didn't even know that spren could bleed. He was lucky he had been able to take the source of Szeth's power in the battle. He turned a corner and there it was. The armory of the Heralds. Every artifact they had ever made. And there in the centre- the pillar. Kaladin grasped it, and thought of every honorable deed he had ever done. And then, ten heartbeats later, he manifested the Shardspear. Afterword by Brandon Sanderson It was always hard for me to think of a good place to end the series, but I think this is it. It's been almost 25 years since I first started working on this book and I really think this is the best way to end the book. As always, you have my sincere thanks for reading the book. It may be a while before we come back to the Cosmere. After this, see excerpts from my latest book, Steelheart 3- heart of iron. You will be seeing Steelheart 4- heart of gold next year I hope. I know you all prefer my non cosmere books, so we'll be having a few more years of people with many types of metallic hearts. Thank you again. I wish that Vin had got a readable (readable for her or people near her) copy of the Mistborn books halfway through the hopefully soon to be changed events of Final Empire.
  19. Thanks for finding more for us. Hmm. They united at some point in the past. Perhaps their gods returned and they unified against a common enemy? Enough to stop them fighting. Thank you for finding that out for us. Also yay for bookstores not caring about release dates.
  20. "I agree, any pub where criminals go to have fun is likely to be dangerous. They'd probably pounce on you faster than I would pounce on a meaty looking bird" Alfie fake pounced. "With a broken leg, looking succulant. I don't feel tired though. I feel like a chase." The woman... "Short brown hair shoulder length, held in a red scarf. Quite curly, frisky. The scarf had a second scarf, blue and red, hanging out from it. She had a number of medallians on her neck, made of gold, iron, steel, electrum, nicrosil, pewter, several other metals I couldn't recognise, all held with a red ribbon. She had a white dress with the legs cut off and a red corset. Her face was... facey. I can picture it clearly but I don't know what differences you consider signifigant. She had a ring on her finger made of electrum." (OOC the medallians are feruchemically charged discs from a variety of terris people she had trysts with. The ring is from her first lover, a rather bipolar individual. It holds a very strong charge. Her greatest dream, likely never to be fulfilled, is to be able to use them. She hopes that by holding them close to her she will be changed into a feruchemist and tries to fill a metal mind every night.) "She also had a very distinctive scar on her face. A gash from just above her left eye to her forehead. Not much meat on her bones." He thought of food and licked his lips hungrily. "Why yes I am hungry how did you guess? May I steal some of your food?"
  21. We don't have many hard and fast laws about shardic interactions or realmic interactions. From what I can remember, we know that shards are roughly equal in power, they are limited by their intent (i.e. preservation doesn't like to ruin things), and multiple shards means the potential for magic systems formed by interactions between shards as well as their own magic systems. On realmic interactions, the spiritual plane can leak into the physical plane to form atium or gemstones. The physical form of a shard's power is limited while the liquid form can do almost anything depending on the volume. Transformation magic, including healing, is dependent on spiritual/cognitive physical interactions- the physical plane is a shadow of the idealized forms in the cognitive/spiritual and as such can only easily transform you into archetypes which have some representation in people's minds. You can force the transformation but it's hard and will fade quickly (TES). Sazed couldn't heal his castration because he didn't think of himself as a man with genitals. Physical body parts correlate with parts of your spirit web, your soul. If you spike someone's eye you get a different part of their soul in your hemalurgical spike to if you spike their shoulder. A shardblade takes ten heartbeats to summon. Syl, likely a cognitive being with shadows on the physical plane, interacting with the physical realm improves her memory. That's all the confirmed stuff I can remember. Otherwise we have guessed and tried to fill in the gaps.
  22. Alfie nodded at Satsu's words. "It looked like a massive operation, with a lot of security. They'd raise a big fuss." Alfie shifted his shoulder a bit, and sat down, eyes up and attentive to Satsu's words. "Thank you for the spike. I fear the pain of the removal a lot," Alfie shivered "but you can use the Pewter better than me so I guess it must happen. They said they needed some nicrosil for the feruchemical miners. You were on their list of people to buy from. The famed metallurgist of rare metals. They don't sound like they have much interest in people's hobbies or morals as long as they get what they want." He saw Satsu put on the goo. Probably an antidisease agent of some sort. The injury must be pretty bad. He shook his head and focused again, and went to replenish his metals as Satsu had said. Pewter tasted nice. A bit stronger than the other metals. "Capturing the golden man you mean? It might be hard until I am healed up, unless we call in backup." He looked down at the mention of the woman, twisting his feet back and forth. "I don't want to fight her directly again. Perhaps you could tell the Terris, if they visit, that she approached you about selling some nicrosil secrets? They could deal with her.
  23. Ah yes, I forgot that. "No." He then signed a person's books, then said "To elaborate a little more, that's not to say they don't have a life force, because they do. But if someone not from Nalthis were to suddenly gain the ability to become an Awakener, they could not use what they have to Awaken something. That's not to say that they can't receive breaths though." Perhaps you could spike out that ability though. That would be an easy way to allow crossovers. You can spike out many spiritual powers- why not awakening? It is rather contrived, but there are other ways to do it. He could have a spike of endowment power, and spike anyone he wanted a breath from. Then he could force them to give them their breath, and take back the spike. It hasn't been mentioned as particularly traumatizing though, losing a breath. Whatever Endowment does is a lot more gentle. Ruin can influence anyone who has metal in them. He can also influence deranged people, like Vin's mother. There'd be some effect but I doubt it would be as great as the effect for someone who has numerous spikes in them, which is well known in universe to be a method to communicate with your god, and is well known as a brutal and dangerous art. Endowment is gentler. Would they be more susceptible to soothing and rioting? At a low level soothing and rioting doesn't attack your spirit. It's noted in the rpg to attack your charm. Just as Preservation and Ruin couldn't prevent minor mental influences weak powers are easy to get under the radar and it only affects you if you don't realize it's working. If you flare it you can have a spirit vs spirit conflict and try to overcome their spirit with your powers. It would be easier to do that to drabs. So basically, a Drab would be just as able to spot or miss weak usage of power and not be affected, but would be more vulnerable to powerful displays of soothing or rioting. That does sound fun, but you should remember, wanton murder, torture, and destruction are possible under a variety of systems. The player makes the fun, not just the system.
  24. Neat setting. People on Nalthis likely endow a part of their soul to another to make a breath. Remember there was all that drama about giving up your soul being evil? While that was a bit overdramatic it is likely that everyone has a breath part of their soul. That is generally how Sanderson's magic systems work. Something natural, like metal or oaths or geography is made magical. That seems like a questionable thing to assume. The breath likely contains a bit of endowment, allowing endowment to occur. If you get a breath you can likely use breaths. This is definitely something you should ask Brandon. It would have a lot of impact on your setting. That seems very unlikely. Are you assuming Nalthian magic is an innate property of the soul as opposed to a magical ability granted by a shard and a planet? I think it would be more reasonable to assume you can use a spike to steal someone's breaths or steal the divine spark of Endowment in them that allows them to use endowment magics. Perhaps. Ruin can only communicate to people through hallucinations and ethereal voices initially, according to the rpg. It's only with a lot of spikes that you become controllable It's more likely this would be the initial effect. Indeed, that seems likely. Just as it gives you resistance to disease it gives you resistance to spiritual influences. It was quite possible to push Sazed's bracers, despite the feruchemical charge. I doubt most charged objects would offer much resistance to someone awakening, given that they would be using a thousand breaths to do anything to metal. Even if they did, enough breath would overcome it just as you can overcome a coppercloud with a strong enough soothe. Brandon has talked about the Mistborn world being low power and the Way of Kings world being high power before. You should ask him if Warbreaker is a high or low power world compared to Mistborn world, and how easy it would be to push things. Perhaps it would regain sentience. To do hemalurgy you need metal spikes and so no you can't.
  25. We may have seen them in some form. They could be crabs, or chull, or cremlings, and we could have only seen an intermediate form. Brandon likes to foreshadow. Some readers may be smart enough to pick up whatever hints before the reveal and guess one of their stages of life.
