Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy talking here. See you around.

Mm, I know they live in Utah. I would be entirely fine with them saying that they know it because Brandon said it to them. I've often seen people say "Brandon said x" referring to a quote on theoryland. I wasn't aware of their exact policy on that. Good to know. Edit. For the purposes of clarification, when I say "A quote on theoryland" I mean a quote that someone else got out of Brandon which they saw on theoryland or in an interview or whatever as opposed to something they heard directly from Brandon. I don't believe that theoryland makes a source more reputable on its own. And thanks for finding the quote. This clarifies the issue a lot.

Having learnt his lesson from the earlier incident, Alfie carefully remains hidden in the space till he is sure the group has left. He doesn't want to be surprised when the tin woman comes back because she left her glasses here.

Could you cite that statement, that Brandon has said that Earth does not exist in that universe? A cite which includes a statement from Brandon I mean, not a cite to our wiki. Could you also cite the statement that the cosmere refers to the entire universe?

I do believe Brandon Sanderson has said that he was a fan of final fantasy. I can quite imagine that his planets have souls and a cognitive presence.

Satsu reported to me that he wasn't receiving emails form posts when he did previously. Has anyone else had this issue? Edit. For me, the site in general is all good, though i shall have to get used to the new quotes.

Ah I see, I thought you mean he'd toss some odisplinters from offworld. I'm not sure random splinters would do that much to prevent reconstitution of Devotion and Dominion. They're both powering numerous individuals who can defeat any singular magical threat without too much problem. What could Gluttony do?

http://xkcd.com/1070/ I hope this clears things up for you. If Odium did drop off some splinters that would mean that if he ever had to engage in a shard vs shard battle he would be weaker and might lose, as with Preservation and Ruin.

Ah yeah, I did miss that. We knew that he'd left behind shattered shards, but we didn't know that he'd left behind none of his power. Cool.

There were some other good finds. Windrunner17 I was always curious why Shadesmar was inaccessible. This explains a lot. Thanks for getting that answer. I did intend to put it here, though I was hoping for an answer to my question on whether Odium is morally ambigous by common standards. Sadly it is not meant to be.

Alfie paced back and forth. He remembered her feet slamming into his side, the sound as his joint was wrenched out. He didn't want to risk that again. He didn't want to have his bones cracked and smashed like his masters by some ruffian. He rubbed his head with his paw, smoothing the fur. Alfie found his way to the hidden passage, to the peephole, and watched carefully. He would watch and make sure she wasn't coming to stab him. Satsu was brave to confront her. The woman was looking very carefully around. Alfie had no need of an actual peephole- his metals let him see through walls quite easily. But he could still hear her through the walls, looking at everything ready to bounce. He hoped she wouldn't try anything. The best way to avoid trouble was to be far away. Never confront anyone. Never tattle.

The Cosmere takes place in another galaxy from ours. Our galaxy may or may not exist in their universe, but magically the cosmere galaxy seems to be self contained and has no connection to earth that we have seen. Most of his other novels take place in alternate versions of earth where some sort of magic exists. They are non Cosmere.

Of course LR didn't have to stay aged at all times, he could become young at any time, but the quote does say it got harder and harder to age down, thus lending evidence to the aging of the spirit web theory. The quote does not say he didn't need to age, it says why he didn't have to stay aged at all times. Perhaps he enjoyed looking older later in life.

He felt slightly agitated at the mention of Harmony. He wasn't sure why. Surely he didn't know this person... "I shall whisper or let her lip read me. I know how tough it can be with enhanced senses and would not want to hurt her. I am thankful for her gathering information." Alfie paused. "I've noticed with my pewter that tin hurts a lot less when I am burning it. You should make pewter a default spike. It really does help with a lot of things." He listened carefully to the talk on the newcomer. "A woman? She might be the lady. I should hide." He looked quickly for an exit.
-
Hah, that's pretty awesome. Someone is having fun. Thank you for finding this.

Alfie had little to contribute. Tired and drained he stayed inside and rested, on occasion sneaking out to eat and feed. Briefly waking up, he decided to go to his room for some personal items. A little alcove way under the building, through a long and thin passageway, where some emergency metals were stored along with anything you had retrieved from a mission that you had to analyse. He had some personal affects moved here a while back, when he was training. He wasn't sure if this place was part of the original building or had been dug out by cats, but it helped a lot having some place where no humans could visit. He picked up his original collar, the one he had worn back when he wasn't quite as smart. With a little effort he managed to put it on. He wanted to remember what it had been like when he lived with his family. He closed his eyes and began to relive a memory. Cuddling a little girl. Warm and soft skin. He wondered why humans lacked fur. Maybe they liked being able to change clothes at will. She was wearing a beautiful and fair dress, a long green masterpiece which someone had clearly spent a lot of money on. It felt like water lapping against his fur. He heard a voice. "Something wicked comes this way, to cut up that pretty dress and cut her up into pieces." That wasn't... the spike lady. Not wanting to deal with this right now he shook off the collar and went upstairs to ask Satsu how his scouting had gone. He was almost healed too. Perhaps the healing went faster for the much smaller cats, with pewter. He might ask if he could get the spike removed. The pain should block out his memories.

The evil genie game... With a Sanderson twist
Nepene replied to Oneyespike's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Fallas twisted the sample slightly to the side. This would be photograph 482. They had been scanning this new metal for weeks from every possible angle to try and figure out its composition but every picture they had come up seemed to be nonsense. One day it would have a square helical structure, the next it would somehow be a double helix. He would swear at times that the thing would change form just to spite him. But of course that was impossible. Nothing would change forms simply because you viewed it differently. Maybe there was a contaminant. He hoped. He reached out for his coffee and tiredly picked it up. Then with a snap it broke and spilled out over the desk, gushing over the precious lerasium sample. He squeeled and plunged his hand into the mess. He pulled out a hot metal with a very distinctive flame... by golly. This was sodium! It all made sense. They had heard reports of people being able to burn it without needing to be a Mistborn. Sodium burnt on its own. It was so obvious when you thought about it. But no one had actually tried burning it because, as people had soon discovered, pure sodium burnt on contact with water. But a few burns were a minor price to pay to become a powerful allomancer. Soon everyone across the land was becoming one. True, this fake lerasium was less effective than that which could be produced by those rare feruchemists with the gift to make investment take solid form and lacked some of the more unique properties. But it would grant you power and everyone wanted it. In time they figured out the secret of making atium too, and they produced a hybrid of the two metals which could make anyone a feruchemist. Almost everyone became one and the world shook with prosperity and power. Till Trell came. Trell didn't care how strong you were, or what powers you held. Trell was a jealous god. He wanted no one alive but those who followed him. Those who had the magics of the blaspheming preservation and ruin had to go. And so he wielded the final metal. Trellesium. His men wore red and gold and their rage was hot. Each wore metals alloyed with their god's body. The final metal would cause agony and death to any who had the power to use those metals. And everyone fell. And as they fell their spirits went screaming to Sazed. Initially he resisted them, his efforts focused on uniting the two aspects of his power to crush Trell. But as every worshipper died he weakened- his power was tied to the people. If no one worshipped him he would shatter. And he did. As he died, a mighty scream echoed through space, a voice of agony that everyone heard saying three words. "Odium has returned." The end had begun. I wish that Sadeas would learn the true value of friendship and love and be really nice and loving to Dalinar and help him with his mission. -
Thank you. To Kurkistan, or anyone else reading this, I am currently looking for quotes from the books to spice things up. I added one from Raoden's description of how the Dor works and the description of measurements of Spren in WOK. If you can find any poignant quotes from the books that illustrate these Cosmere principles I would appreciate them.

I added I think that balances the line between pushing a theory and quoting appropriately. He does say it isn't all there, indicating quite a lot could be wrong. If he said the theory needs a few minor modifiers but is otherwise right then sure it would be worth including. Anything I put in the main thread people will believe if they're new- I don't want to give them misleading facts. Not to say anything is wrong with your theory. Perhaps if he read it in full he would give it the ok.

Alfie lept on the food, scattering it from side to side. He quickly devoured every scrap he could find, incredibly hungry. Soon he ran out, going towards the kitchen looking for more. He found now that he could eat a lot more as a cat. It also took way longer to digest things. Something had changed inside of him. No idea what it was. He went around a corner, his steel pushes keeping weight off his weak leg at all times. Eventually he reached the kitchen. There was a woman there, cleaning dishes and washing. Perfect. Right on the edge of a table was a plate. He was sure he could reach it. He silently swung his head around, looking for anyone nearby. No one was. Also perfect. He bound up onto the table and picked up the plate in his mouth. Then he lept away from the table, using steel to slow his floor. He sprinted off with the plate, going to find a room to hide in. They he consumed more delicious foods, happy at his prize. Alfie soon returned to Satsu, almost finished with his meal. He paced up to him and went to his feet, curling up in front of them. Soon he fell asleep, to the melodic voice of plans and missions and went into the world of dreams. He dreamed of floating golden spikes and beer mugs.

The evil genie game... With a Sanderson twist
Nepene replied to Oneyespike's topic in General Brandon Discussion
You are very happy with your girlfriend. She's been ever so sweet and kind to you and she's left you in a really good mood. So you return home one day with flowers and chocolate to reward her. And she's dead. You see a multicolored Kandra on the floor eating her corpse. While you are initially a bit miffed at the murder of the one you love the Kandra soon touches your forehead and you feel an intense feeling of connection to them. They speak. "Trust me, this is for your own good." They stab something metal in your chest, but you trust it's for the best. "Repeat after me, my life to yours, my memory become yours." Trusting this person completely you comply and repeat the words. You feel your soul flicker and a soft bit of color wafts from you to them. You forget all about your silly girlfriend in a second. Then the Kandra finishes consuming the woman and takes her form. She hugs you and says "We're going to be the best of friends." You smile and nod, completely believing her. She is a good pet. She can seemingly summon slightly bland food out of nowhere for you. There's no need for public transport anymore to get to work. She just grabs a hobo off the street and sacrifices them, teleporting you straight there. And boy, she is flexible. She has a host of forms she is willing to take for you. The woman who seems so familiar, other women you see that she murdered (but soon forgot about after a bit of prodding) and even a cat. Life is perfect. At one point, with some prodding from you, she even abducts Brandon Sanderson for you and gets him to spill the beans (after many tears) on how the Cosmere really works. Boy, who would have expected that llamas were such a major part of it? A year later you open the latest book by Brandon. On the first page, this was written. "Kandra who are awakened instantly die a horrible death and that's canon, take this Satsuoni you jerk." You think how impressive it is how he worked that into a sentence- then you hear a scream from the kitchen. You rush in. She's dead. There was so much blood everywhere that you can barely makeout her form. You cry and sob but nothing can bring her back. You never forget her, despite many years going by. Life seems empty and meaningless without your pet Kandra. You slowly become a shell of yourself and pine away after her until one day you die and there is no afterlife, no Kandra, just an eternal void of nothingness. I wish that being in the 17thshard forum actually gave you effective cosmere powers if you had more reputation. -
Does Splintering a Shard have an effect on Shadesmar?
Nepene replied to b4dave's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There is another option as to why Shadesmar is so screwed up. ""Yes." Svrakiss. The souls of the dead men who hated Jaddeth, the opponents to all that was holy. According to Shu-Dereth, there was nothing more bitter than a soul who had had its chance and thrown it away."-Elantris The souls of the dead, corrupted in some scheme of Odium's. Brandon has mentioned I believe that if souls refuse to pass on they can hang around in the cognitive realm in reference to Kelsier or Vin and Elend. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=727#50 -
The heralds may not be native to Roshar and may be from Yolen and as such they may have carried over some terminology when developing their new almighty given powers, like Lightweaving.

I agree we don't know. Kurkistan seemed to be working under the assumption that we know for sure that magic works the same across a planet and I was challenging that as we have zero evidence on it, though in a poor way. I have amended my post. "It's not self-evident, but becomes nearly as evident, to most people's eyes, when considered in the broader context." And it is not nearly evident. If Brandon confirms a theory or thinks a theory is good it is nearly evident. That is the purpose of this thread, quoting Brandon.

www.noyoucannot.com I tried that initially. The link box does have an http:// awaiting you but I didn't realize that was necessary and deleted it when I copy pasted the link in. It doesn't actually become self evident. There are a number of possibilities of what he could find interesting. There is no direct evidence on the subject whether magic works in exactly the same way across a planet. We don't know exactly what he means. A lot of things could be interesting to him. Meg was entirely right to ask the question. It is a topic of ongoing inquiry and fans should continue to ask questions about it. Besides which, Meg was inquiring about how you would get the magic to work on another world. That opens another whole can of worms. There are a lot of possible ways you could get the magic to work on other worlds and we don't know which one Brandon will use (though it is implied that there is a way to do it). Meg's inquiry was entirely reasonable. There is no unambiguous answer, implied or otherwise, that we can give to Meg's questions.
