Here are the new cosmere relevent answers to date. I've mostly used shortened versions of people's names since I am lazy. The evil genie game... With a Sanderson twist
Nepene replied to Oneyespike's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Your wish is granted, and the ten books are written. But not published. You thought Brandon actually writes that fast? No, he has already prewritten every Stormlight, Dragonsteel, Mistborn book and everything back when he was a teen. While everyone else was studying and going to lectures he was writing and putting things to paper. That's why he can pump them out so fast. He continues to drop hints and minor spoilers about future books for the next twenty years while slowly releasing his backlog, savoring your pain. You will get to read the books. Eventually. After everyone else. I wish that someone would get Hoid, Tanavast, Rayse, Sazed, the Seventeeth shard around a table and get them to really talk about their issues and pains and try to get them to negotiate it out. -
Alfie stopped storing connection and nodded his small head. "I need to restock my metal reserves. I'm pretty much out. I was sick a lot of the night, after the operation." He shuddered."But yes, I am ready to go. Let us catch those bloodmakers. Do you have any reports of their current location, or should we go a hunting?" He extended his claws in a flash and slashed the air. Alfie then burnt electrum, having found some nearby and stolen it, and started monitoring his future. He would be caught out by people. Oh no he wouldn't. Couldn't trust them.

Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Cosmere
Nepene replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
With the lack of answers, I'll try and cover a variety of them with this. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3045-realmatic-theory-and-magic-101/ Question: What is Adonaslium. Answer: A presence spanning the void, which was shattered into a number of Shards like Preservation and Ruin which are composed of its immense planet shattering power and intents. We do not know yet whether it was conscious or know much about it. Hoid was present at the Shattering. Source: http://coppermind.net/wiki/Adonalsium Canonicity: Books, word of Brandon. Question: What is the Chronology of the novels? Answer. Elantris, Emperor's Soul, Mistborn Trilogy, Warbreaker, Way of Kings, Alloy of Law. Books are roughly chronological with their release dates. Source: http://coppermind.net/wiki/Chronology Canoncity. Word of Brandon. Question: What are the three realms? Answer. The physical realm where the universe exists is one. The spiritual realm where souls exist and where magical power like Atium leaks from, which holds our connections to others. The cognitive plane, composed of the thoughts and views of beings (with more complex things having a strong presence) which can be travelled through in the form of Shadesmar. In the event of a shattering, a Shard's power is uncontrolled and it can make traveling in the cognitive plane dangerous. We have met beings, probably spren, which exist primarily on the cognitive plane and partially on the physical plane. Source. http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3045-realmatic-theory-and-magic-101/ Canonicity. Books, word of Brandon. Question: What is a Shard? Answer: The Shards of Adonalsium, or Shards for short, are pieces of the power of creation itself. They are named after a specific action or ideal, called an intent. A mind must control a Shard. When a person holds a Shard, they are imbued with its power, but they also become the Shard. They are the most powerful entities in the Cosmere, there are probably sixteen of them, and they are for all intents and purposes gods. All known magic in the novels is generated at least partially by a Shard. Their power regenerates over time if used and they can do a great number of actions in line with their intent- moving planets, transforming things, prophesy, and fueling magic, though they are not omnipotent or omniscient and find some magics harder or impossible due to their intent. Source.http://coppermind.net/wiki/Shard Canonicity. Books, Word of Brandon. Sanderson implied. Who would win if a Kelsier fought Szeth? Or Vasher? Answer: Kelsier would have a distinct advantage if they started further away as he could fire coins at Szeth. He could not push the Shardblade as it is strongly invested with power, but he could push any metal on Szeth's body. Mistborn are generally tougher. A report at a signing said that Nightblood was orders of magnitude stronger than a Shardblade. The fight would depend on a lot of variables though. Source. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=593#10 http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/383-the-ultimate-list-of-questions-for-brandon/page__view__findpost__p__8896 Canonicity. Word of Brandon. Edited with Windrunner's thing. -
Alfie stretched his legs out and inspected his chest. The wound had soon healed but he still wasn't quite as agile. That spike had rammed its way through his body and he had worried it would be bad for a long time, but it hadn't. Each spike seemed to strength his insides, rearranging them to fit them. If someone stabbed at him with a sword or fired a gun at him they'd only have a fifty fifty chance of even hitting a vital organ. He then stretched out his steelsight. He was in a small room, with some food that smelt so good next to him. He could see blue ghosts wandering across the floor above him. He could see a little of his own red blood congealed on the floor in front of him. He pushed... the blood parted for his power, dripping on the floor. He could store connection now too. It was sorta like steel pushing but with emotions. He could push out love to everyone, or draw it all back. Felt a lot less trippy now too. He remembered he'd had a nightmare after he'd fallen asleep from the operation. He had woken up inside the middle of a cake. He'd eaten and bitten his way through the delicious cake, but each bite made him more tired. Then he'd collapsed, his head peaking out of the giant chocolate cake. Then he woke up, and the cake had regenerated. He was trapped. Weird dream. He got up and went to see what Satsu was up to.

Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Cosmere
Nepene replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I wasn't sure if I should proscribe what everyone else should answer, but if you think it's good fine. The last question does come up a lot and Brandon has gone on the record answering it. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=593#10 -
Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Cosmere
Nepene replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Cool thread. I can answer one. Q: What is the Cosmere? A: The Cosmere is a dwarf galaxy set in an alternate universe not containing Earth. In this galaxy there are ten Shardworlds where the novels take place and Shards, godlike beings, have a lot of influence. There are many minor planets with less Shardic influence. There are worldhoppers like Hoid and the Seventeeth Shard who go from planet to planet making an overarching story behind the scenes. Source. http://coppermind.net/wiki/Cosmere Canonicity: Word of Brandon -
I was not saying that they used AonDor, merely wondering if whatever geographical magic they had was similar to AonDor. It might be that you could do basically the same things anywhere if you knew the right symbols, or it might be that different areas could do different types of magic. You haven't said anything to convince me that one scenario is definitely true. Nor am I completely sure what you are saying. Anyway, I don't believe we should focus our questions around what is a high priority interest to you. Everybody should be free to ask whatever questions are of interest to them. If we wish to be polite I could certainly just ask one Cosmere question, and said so in my first post. If people do want to ask a pointless question, like whether you could use soulcasting to make waffles, they should be free to. It's high priority to them.
-
The obvious reason why Forging is so different from Bloodsealing would be that Bloodsealing was in line with Dominions intent, as Chaos said, and that Forging was in line with Devotion's intent, as I say. Are you saying that it would be pointless to ask him if an Elantrian could do a forging, or to ask if the magic systems were the same? You can go out on a limb all you want, but do you believe you have enough knowledge from the books to make a solid case that they are different, enough that it would be pointless asking him a question about that? I am sure they are different in scope of course, with the Elantrian city. In Elantris 2 if we get to explore more cultures it would be interesting to see how they used Devotion's magics.
-
I did put them in different questions, so this shouldn't be an issue. I was merely explaining to someone why the Southern Continent book was a book of interest to me in a similar way to the Emperor's Soul. We don't know that forging is a different magic. It's possible, with the right symbols, that an Elantrian could make an soul stamp. So I asked a question about that. To any who are reading- me and Kurkistan got into a long discussion. If you wish to see new posts unrelated to the discussion, skip to the next page.

In Elantris, magic works by people drawing symbols of magical things and making magical things happen. In the Emperor's soul magic works by people engraving symbols of magical things and making magical things happen. Due to the substantial similarities, I described it as a familiar magic system to explain my point. We don't know for sure whether they are the same sort of magic- that is one of my questions, whether an Elantrian could make a forging if they knew the right symbols- but they are clearly very similar. Also you have downvoted a lot of my posts. Every time I remember seeing you in recent times, it's been next to a downvoted post. Edit. Resolved with Windrunner. Someone was previously causing issues, I was on edge.
-
I am aware of that. The book about the Southern Continent would be a standalone book about a foreign society that uses a familiar magic system in a different way, like the Emperor's Soul. I was not saying they were on the same world, simply that they would be similar in what they were doing.
-
It's cool. We don't talk about it much here. Either of those interpretations would be ok, but I'll rephrase it so it's clearer. I was more interested in whether a planet had a tangible soul that you could visit and communicate with, perhaps on the cognitive plane, like in final fantasy. Is Brandon wily? He's answered lots of direct questions put to him that you would expect him to RAFO. I don't believe he's ever been wily in question responses, from my memory of interview questions put to him. He's pretty cool.
-
---- Sure He has, in Alcatraz. I didn't say he had to mention it in a Cosmere book. Why is that his presumed answer? I dunno. What would I be asking here, or saying? You'll probably just get him to say that Denth, as a returned, can change the color of his hair. You'd probably get better results asking him directly if what he did was because of his divine breath. It's probably not a big point- if he does RAFO it and wink you know you're probably right.

Brandon Sanderson is doing an AMA on reddit. I thought it might be a good idea to coordinate any questions here, both for the sake of inspiring good questions, weeding out any that he has already answered, and avoiding asking the same questions to him twice. For me, if one question is allowed. 1. You've mentioned several philosophical concepts used in the writing of your books, like Jung's collective unconsciousness, Plato's cave. Could you expand a bit on your use of those in your books, and whether you think it is necessary to use philosophy to make a good fantasy world? If more than one is allowed. 2. What was it like writing using the very different philosophies of Robert Jordan? 3. You've said you want to write a book set in the Southern Continent. I did enjoy the Emperor's Soul a lot, so I am curious about you writing that future book. How do they use magic differently, and why should we be excited about reading a book set there? 4. In The Emperor's Soul and Elantris the magic systems have very different methods and powers, though both work through symbols. Assuming they adapted the symbols to their local geography could they use each other's methods? Could an Elantrian forge a soulstamp say? 5. In Warbreaker Lightsong mentions that the Returned's forms are dependent on contemporary beauty standards. In the Emperor's Soul Shai implies that if others did not believe in the Emperor's Soul it would break. Is my reading of their statements correct, is their magic dependent on how others view you as well as how you view yourself? If these questions got answered early, or if anyone wants a question. 6. What would Hoid's abilities be as a mtg card? What sort of character would he be as a DND character? 7. Have you ever considered releasing a Mistborn card game? 8. You've said before that technically Odium isn't evil. Does Odium have goals and methods that a reasonable, moral person could get behind? 9. If Ruin had won what would his long term goals be? What about before he was imprisoned, after the deal with Preservation? 10. In the rpg increasing power with a feruchemical power means a greater ability to store and tap that ability. Is that true in the Mistborn world? 11. Do planets have a soul, like in final fantasy?

Alfie paced after Satsu into the house, following neatly at his heal. It was over. They were safe from Harmony's minions. He let loose a sigh of relief, and stretched. Then, seeing Satsu ahead, he hurried after him. Alfie hopped up on the table, looking at the metals. He could see these two alloys were both pewter, but one looked a bit off. He was getting better at reading metals. He tightened his paws. He was Satsu's little monster, murderer. He scratched at his face. His insides felt dark and light. He hated being confused. As Satsu removed his spikes, Alfie sought out new metals. He needed more steel and iron- what little Satsu had given him would soon run out and he didn't want to be in danger. He found a small pile of steel and licked some up. Tastes like blood. Did he want the spike? Yes. "The spike has a lot of value to me. I don't need to be agile. I do need to feel closer to my old family. Having a part of him inside him would feel good. Thank you for all your work. I couldn't spike myself without you."

I meant no criticism, I totally appreciate your hard work. There are a few questions that could do with some rephrasing. Slightly confusing phrasing. Jesker is a religion, the Mysteries is a cult, as Brandon says. They both seek to tap or understand AonDor. It's somewhat confusing to interpret the Dor names. http://www.brandonsanderson.com/annotation/45/elantris-Chapter-32 So it might be better to ask "Can the Jesker religion or the Jesker Mysteries cult access AonDor and use it?" There's a question we should ask about Mistborn, relating to what you said. "You've mentioned you wanted to do a Mistborn book in the Southern Continent. How is the Southern Continent's way of using magic or technology different, and why is it cool?" This should be hemalurgy I believe. We know that the Shard's powers generally regenerate. He's been asked variants of this question a few time and has danced around it. It might be better to change 'would that energy the Shard used be expended ' which presumably was meant to imply permanently expended to 'would more energy be needed, or would the energy be regenerated more slowly?'
-
Some of those questions still in your list, Phantom, have been answered, or should have particular wordings because answers have been confusing. http://www.theoryland.com/intvsresults.php?kw=splintering https://twitter.com/PeterAhlstrom/status/304784619155374080 Apparently yes, http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/383-the-ultimate-list-of-questions-for-brandon/page-20?p=40426#entry40426 So we have a few questions down.
-
Yeah. Transcribed or spoken by Windrunner and others, we recently had an interview confirmation of the timelines. www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3189-brandon-signing

Cool, thank you. A very good interview. Here's all the cosmere info presented in one shorter post. Are the Ars Arcanums written by the same person. More reod stuff.

Alfie pushed against a cooker in someone's house, along with a pipe that ran under the street. He soared off Satsu's soldiers straight to the right and onto a stone wall. He followed Satsu, running along the wall, balancing between his pushes. His control was improving. He'd need some practice, but he suspected with time he could control more than two metal objects. He found if he assigned each object to a part of his body- that pipe to his tail, the coin to his hand, the cooker to his heart, he could more easily control them. He pushed from the same place, but now by flicking his tail, extending it more, he could strength or adjust that push. Was there a limit to how many objects he could control? One for each claw? A corner came up ahead of him. He ran from one ledge to another, and then ran straight round the corner. Any who saw him would be shocked by his agility. Without steel he could barely climb five feet. With it he was lighter on his feet, faster. A blue line of a lamp post came up ahead of him. He pushed onto it and ran up it to the top. He then burnt steel and tin strongly, peering backwards. Every sense was enhanced. The night looked beautiful. A swirling mess of blue lines. His eyes were blue, not red. He was not bloody. He was clean. He then came after Satsu and relayed what he had seen to him, using tin to make sure no one was listening out for his words before he spoke.
-
That's a question to ask Brandon- does Odium have an aversion to using his power/ leaving it behind on worlds? He may or may not be willing to expend his strength.
-
We know that Odium works by turning people against each other. It's not overthinking to propose he did the same to Honor and Cultivation.
