Do all Shards have equal power/influence in all three realms?
Nepene replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Since I agree that the metals act as a key I am unsure what you disagree with. -
March has a good storage. He probably won't need more until the second trilogy at least. And then there probably will be some more atium.
-
Harmony isn't fond of direct intervention, and as such probably prefers that Marsh do it on his own.

Stormlight 2 - Where Shardblades come from
Nepene replied to Galavantes's topic in Stormlight Archive
I always assumed they came from the Purelake. Cause they're wet. -
They may have both soulcasters and fabrials but have no idea that a lot of those with fabrials are faking it.

[OOC. Feeling lazy. Tired from overwork due to exams and stuff of others. Here is what I've done. You can do your next post if you wish, or continue this. ] Alfie leapt up onto the roof and quickly ran in the direction of the bar. He burnt electrum. Will there be any danger when I reach the Inquistor's Spike, he asked his future self? "Nothing you cannot avoid easily". Confident he continued on, using a touch of steel to boost his agility. Felendwyl, standing far to the side, spotted a cat that smells of metal and herbs, running up the wall. She picked up a brick and threw it, tin guiding her throw. The brick flew straight and true, striking the abnormal beast right in the flank. Alfie cried out in pain and slid along the rooftop, his head spinning. He pushed against a knife in a wall far away, embedding it in the wall to slow his movement. Alfie slid to a stop, his rib burning in his chest, steel behind him. With tin making everything, including his pain burn hot and steel together he sweept his eyes out, looking to see who attacked him. Shadows of electrum danced before his eyes, telling her she was right ahead of him. Then, shaking it off, he burnt steel and flew out to the side, looking to flank her. Felendwyl whips out her pistol and advances, seeking a good angle to hit a leg. She switches the bullet to aluminium, having seen the cat use steel before, and aimed the gun at Alfie's hind leg, preparing to fire. He blinked as his world started spinning. Then, shaking it off, he burnt steel and flew out to the side, looking to flank her. He pushed against her gun, trying to alter the trajectory anywhere but him. Bang! The bullet wooshed over his head. That was close. Too close. She curses, since she only has 3 Aluminium bullets left, and they are expensive. She switches to another bullet, draws dagger and advances warily. Alfie tapped some of his pewtermind to strengthen himself, and pushed hard on her dagger, making it slice at her. He'd show her for attacking him. She was not nearly strong enough to keep on to the dagger. Alfie's steelpush pushed her hand back and twisted it anough to give her a scratchs on ther chest. Alfie was pushed back to the roof's edge As Alfie's push eases, she curses vehemently and throws the dagger down into the space between the buildings. Metal is apparently of little use against Alfie. She picks up another brick and before Alfie can react, she throws another brick. Alfie started to move off but heard a brick sailing towards him. He twisted away from it, and it slammed into his paw "Mewwwwwwww". He flew back, his mind thudding with pain, thrown off the roof. Trying to land he sent pulses of steel out, but he could barely control it, and sent himself spinning. He rushed through the air and hit the ground hard. He weakly got up, dazed and confused. Pretty lights spinning around my head. Round and round they go. Felendwyl grabs the first brick lying nearby and waits for the cat to emerge, scanning the gap he fell into. She sees a cat staggering about and takes this opportunity to shoot it in the back leg with aluminium bullet Alfie saw Felendwyl advancing and tried to use steel to move as far away as he could. In spasms and jerks he started flying away. But not fast enough. The bullet went through meaty part of the leg. Alfie starts bleeding Alfie collapsed, his mind swimming with pain. Everything hurt. He was so dizzy. He had to get up...He flared tin. Felendwyl sees the cats crash to the ground. However, there is no way down for normal human. And it is too far to jump. She looks around. Alfie felt the clarity of agony. She spots damaged stonework that she could climb while keeping an eye on the cat. She secures the rope and starts down His mind didn't feel clear at all. Just pain. Endless pain. He staggered towards the edge of the alleyway

Do all Shards have equal power/influence in all three realms?
Nepene replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
All the worlds may well have some sort of physical god metal variant. The moon sceptre may be it on Sel, the tears of Edgli on Nalthis, there's probably something on Roshar like dark spheres. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=691#7 http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=680#11 On the tears. They can be used to power lifeless. Although Brandon says that while Endowment does have a physical god material, it doesn't appear on screen. -

The metals aren't invested. The metals cause your body to be invested e.g. pewter invests your muscles. This has long standing and significant effects, and can make you a savant. You can't have a savant made of steel, only a human steel savant. The same is true on Sel, you invest your bodies to become Elantrians or boney monks. Edit. As Senor said, with the exception of the god metals. And feruchemy and hemalurgy, I guess, though there they also invest your body. -

You keep implying that metals aren't a focus. You can be clearer by not saying "Scadrial --> physical --> metals" and then saying you understand that metals aren't a focus. Those two statements are contradictory. Either metals are a focus, or they are not. -

The metals on Scadrial are the focus of the world's magic system, likewise with the forms on Sel. Breaths are what is controlled by your power on Nalthis. Incidentally, I believe it has been confirmed reasonably well that body parts and gemstones are focuses on Roshar. It's an important concept. Corruption of the focus (impure metals, earthquake in sel) are major themes in his book. It is a good question, and there probably is some sort of grouping that the shards have. It is just unrelated to their focus, or 'forms' if you prefer that word. -

Do all Shards have equal power/influence in all three realms?

I agree with Ruin, Preservation, and Endowment. With Devotion, could she not simply grant the person her devotion? Devote herself to their protection and do whatever is necessary to protect them, ? She need not demonstrate her intent to the person. Perhaps Devotion would appear, see Dominion also in that bubble and, realizing that Dominion would slay the person, she would hurl herself and Dominion out of the bubble to protect the person. The person would have no idea what had happened- because devotion requires no witness. It is an innate quality of the heart. You do not devote yourself to a principle so people will see you as a better person. You do what needs to be done. But perhaps as she left, her eyes would cross with the person's eyes. He would feel a deep and powerful sense of love, of connection. He would know that she was doing this for him, that he and all humans were special. That she had devoted herself to his protection. Nothing rational in his mind could explain it. But he'd feel it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agape Agape (/ˈæɡəpiː/[1] or /əˈɡɑːpeɪ/; Classical Greek: ἀγάπη, agápē; Modern Greek: αγάπη IPA: [aˈɣapi]) is one of the Koine Greek words translated into English as love, one which became particularly appropriated in Christian theology as the love of God or Christ for humankind. In the New Testament, it refers to the covenant love of God for humans, as well as the human reciprocal love for God; the term necessarily extends to the love of one’s fellow man.[2] Many have thought that this word represents divine, unconditional, self-sacrificing, active, volitional, and thoughtful love. She is acting in pursuit of her intent, in her mind. She would show it in her behaviour, in her devotion to their good health. Preservation, likewise, wouldn't be able to show it in more than behaviour until a situation arose where he could do something. This isn't a legitimate distinction between the shards. All of them need to make conscious choices to do things. Ruin has to consciously chose things to ruin, Preservation has to chose things to preserve. They are all selective in their choices. None target everything. Dominion stared at the human. "Kneel. For I am your god. And I deserve your devotion." Their eyes would meet. The human would feel that Dominion was innately superior. Perhaps he would be unsure for a moment, but he would feel domination. "I have a plan to get us out of here. Obey me, and you might just survive." Recognising authority, the human would obey this confident and powerful being. But still he was unsure. "Kneel before me. I said... kneel! Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power. For identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel." -

http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=727 Metals are the focus of Scadrial, commands are the focus of Nalthis, symbols are the focus of Sel. I get that. I'm just not sure if it's true. Love can't exist in a vacuum either. Love requires other people around you to love. Ruin can't exist in a vacuum, nor can Preservation or any other Shard. They all require an object to do their intent to. You're not presenting me a particularly convincing argument for Devotion and Dominion being cognitive. Since the spiritual realm is, explicitly, according to Shai, our connection to others, it requires other people and can't exist in a vacuum. Devotion is very much a connection to others. Shai- Your definition of the realms doesn't seem to be based on this. -

Nepene replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We don't know this explicitly. It may be that a focus is entirely determined by what planet you are on. Any shard that is on Nalthis may have a metal based magic system say. Anyway, we do not have nearly enough evidence to say that one shard is physical or spiritual based just on that. It could be as you say that shards are attracted to worlds that fit their magic systems, it could be that shardic qualities determine what focus a world has, but we don't have any evidence to say yet. On Sel, wouldn't Devotion, love, be more of a spiritual attribute? An intent of our connections to others. Same with Dominion, about how a ruler relates to their subjects. But their magic is very cognitive in focus. I agree that shards have limitations on what they can do based on their intent, but we don't have any clear evidence they are limited by their physical or spiritual or cognitive nature. Allomancy and Feruchemy do certainly have a lot of spiritual and cognitive powers for supposedly physical shards say. They are, in fact, mostly not physical. Allomancy only has 4 physical powers. It is not that limited. If you met him at a signing you could ask him. -
Ishikk could have laid a false trail at the request of Hoid. Hoid is likely rich enough to bribe him.

The physical focus of Ruin and Preservation was due, at least in part, to the natural state of the planet. It is hinted that Odium might have a metal if he went to Scadrial. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=727#5 I wouldn't say that a shard was physical or cognitive or spiritual due to their focus, only due to whatever powers the metals have. On why Sazed couldn't bring them back. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=428#10 Endowment could be snapping them up early, or could have done what Sazed could do and find a way to enter heaven and hell. http://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/1a3fj0/discussion_of_the_week_shadesmar_truthspren/c8tufs0 It is hard to travel in Shadesmar in Sel because of the power that Odium left shattered in his wake was uncontrolled and was being erratic. -
The magic system, where breaths can be used to animate objects, came from Endowment's intent's interaction with the world, the returned came from Endowment empowering people's breaths with his powers of creation and creating a splinter. Brandon explicitly confirms that Endowment called Lightsong (and presumably other returned) back. www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=428#59 Shards have immense power and any of them likely could rebuild a person from the dead. The main issue for them is catching their souls before they go to heaven or hell or whatever where they are harder to reach. The Mistborn annotations talk a bit about this. Whatever Hoid's element is, it is likely something which only grants a small amount of power, not enough to make him a significant threat to Odium.

Brandon, you should really have a name for Aluminum Gants
Nepene replied to kroen's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Aluminium is currently absurdly expensive. I doubt anyone is going to be rich enough to waste all that aluminium for a while yet just because it might do something. Perhaps in the second or the third trilogy when electrolysis is widespread and aluminium is cheap. -

Nepene replied to kroen's topic in General Brandon Discussion
The names are in universe names for people's powers. Unless they know about the powers of aluminium users then they'll be called gnats. Plus we don't know duralumin is useless. It might be possible to amplify in body investiture effects. -
Welcome Sarah. I hope you enjoy your time here.

In the Cosmere from what we've seen people's beliefs have an impact on ideas and religions (several cross over from world to world) transformation and healing magic, and time magic. I doubt it's strong enough to have any noticeable impact on the stars. The limitations will likely remain. Sanderson is all about the limitations.
-
Allomantic Aluminium burns all your allomantic metal reserves. It has no impact on lead of any sort. The only magics I know of that might be able to do that are soulcasting and Elantrian symbol magic. Both have the transformation attribute.

Interesting tidbits from signing in San Jose
Nepene replied to The Anamnesor's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The Dor being two was used to make the Brandon Avalanche (with the evil monks and probably the Bloodsealers) and was very important to both stories. Harmony is one shard, and as such the most recent Mistborn book was non epic. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a new Shard to fight in Mistborn trilogy 2 given that we will apparently be seeing some new final metal from the men of gold and red. Nalthis is not doing fine since Sanderson is doing single books in that world, not epic series. Multiple gods is massively important for making an epic fantasy series. Wheel of Time has the creator and the Dark One. David Eddings books almost all have good and evil gods. Runelord has the Earth and the Master. Multiple magic systems help a lot too, in books like the Dragon Prince series with the two types of magic, the Shannara book with the druid magic and the demon magic. It's the norm for an epic fantasy series. You have some big magical bad with immense power, the heroes have to power up to fight him or have to find his weakness, and there are vast armies of normal humans and other races intriguing and fighting too. -
It is pretty scary speaking to a celebrity. Well done though. With the dead splinter shard thing, it's likely that on Sel and Roshar the splinters are mostly from dead shards while in Nalthis with the divine breaths the splinters there are from a living shard.
