    Nogard screamed, spun around, then landed flat on his back. He stared upwards. "Oh," he said. "Just you." He closed his eyes and exhaled. Then he peeked one eye open. "The clue? Where was it?"

    Nogard stumbled slightly as the beast rounded a corridor behind him, snapping at his heels. He dove through the narrow gap moments before the beast, nearly crashing into Shoe in the process.

    "We need," Nogard panted, "To find. A path. Too small for it."

    Because the walls were totally black, Nogard could not see the contours of the room. Fortunately, he was just able to catch Shoe vanishing around a corner. He followed with expedient haste, hoping that Shoe knew where they were going.

    "Ow!" exclaimed Nogard. The maybe-dragon let out a low rumble. "Oh," said Nogard.

    Nogard squinted. "Hit the floor? Wait, no, I get it!" He brought his fist down on the marble, then yelped. The marble bumped against Shoe's shoe as Nogard wrung his hand in pain.
