    "Shh!" whispered Xino. "Something's happening." ----- Silence stood outside Pheonix's cell, watching the slumped figure through the wall. His face, as always, was unreadable. With a sigh, he turned away from his prisoner and pressed a button on the wall. ----- "Look," said Xino in a hushed tone. "It's turning on..." ----- Silence watched as the Narrative energy flooded the core of the gateway, hours and hours of effort expended in a matter of seconds. Expensive, indeed; but worth it. ----- "He's coming in," whispered Xino. ----- As the portal warmed up, Silence mentally rehearsed what he would say to Star once he'd woken her up. A dozen plans were conceived, dissected, and dismissed before the portal had activated more than halfway. ----- "Be ready," said Xino. "He can't see us now, but once he steps through..." ----- He had failed so many times before. No man could do what he had done and keep his soul pure. He could not undo the actions he had taken in cold anger, either, no matter how much he regretted them. He might be forgiven. He might not. In the end, he could only hope. The light above the portal frame dinged on. With a deep breath, Silence stepped through.

    Unexpectedly, the hemalurgic beaver-humans died.

    They muttered about how they would destroy them all. But they didn't. The creator stopped them.

    Neil merged with Daa, energy returning in a flood of Investiture. "Sounds good," he said. "I don't think I'd stand a chance against any of those... whatever they are." @Sorana @AonEne

    Draug shook his head again. "My tutor never told me anything about outsider magics, although I'm certain he knew about them. He could probably tell you what your black sword was."

    Draug hesitated, then sighed and shook his head. "No, I've never heard of it."

    Xino grinned, a gleam in his eyes. "He has Narrativium. Silence doesn't. Did you see how worried he was when you said you would kill him?" He took a step closer. "If he thinks we have a chance, we most certainly do."

    Xino sighed. "Because Silence isn't here yet! When he gets here, just blast him! End of your worries, right there."

    Xino snorted. "Don't be ridiculous." He stood up. "You have the gun, yes?"

    Draug shook his head. "I don't know about any change. All I know is that I've tried telling other people the truth. It never works." He looked at James. "But if that were to change? I guarantee I would tell as many people as I could. As fast as possible." He took a step away from the ashes of the door. "When they know the truth, why would they turn against us?"

    Neil watched the battle with a sense of detachment. These were beings aeons beyond his limited power, beings that could level cities with barely a thought. Weak. The thought startled him. Where had that come from? He fiddled with the ring on his left hand, trying to recall just what memory had triggered such a conception. His thoughts were interrupted by movement in the battle. The six... creatures surrounding the leader had split up and begun going in different directions. Two of them- one in black, one in blue- were heading straight towards Neil and the others. He leapt to his feet, reaching out his hand for Daa. "Enemies coming!" he cried. @AonEne @Sorana

    Neil slumped against the sofa as Daa left him, heavy exertion taking its due now that the seon was no longer Investing his limbs. With a feeling of numbness he watched the sevensome below. "We wouldn't stand a chance, would we?" he whispered to Daa. The seon blinked twice, slowly. The sign for "No."
