  1. A voice gasped. "At last!" it said. "The Chosen One!"

"Rules," said Aylin. "Gamemaster makes rules. World is rules. Break rules is impossible." @Condensation

Argent blinked. "Maybe, I guess. We won't be able to do anything while playing the game, though."
  4. Gerald gave a helpful push.
  5. "You should be able to. Try it out!"
  6. "Agreed," said Gerald. "If you have to use it, use it only for healing. It's not meant to give someone new powers, merely enhance their current ones."

"You don't," said Argent. "He never shows his face."
  8. "Here," said Gerald, helping her equip the scabbard.
  9. It went over her back, right?
  10. It went back in time to before it took the deal.
  11. This wound up making it even more confused, however.
  12. "It shouldn't be," assured the shadow. "It's not like we're cutting a piece off, or changing the nature of the power. Just... opening it up a bit."
  13. "Because it's a dangerous and powerful artifact!" replied Gerald. "And it doesn't really belong to you. Even without knowing what it is, you should be suspicious of a price to pay."
  14. "You used the amulet," said Gerald as the party made an expeditious retreat. It wasn't a question.
  15. "What do you have to apologize for?" said the merchant mildly, turning back to his shop. "Idiocy isn't a crime... and you were very generous with your gold." "Thanks for the scabbard," said Gerald, tugging Ellis away from the stand. "We'll be sure to recommend you to all our sword-wielding friends! Er, so that they can buy from you. Not... yeah."
  16. The merchant's brow furrowed. Gerald hurriedly slapped a chunk of gold on the counter. "I knew that exchanger was shady," he interjected. "No respectable trader would hide behind such a bad fake mustache! Too bad he ran off with our money before we could have it checked! Oh well, there's little hope we'll be able to catch him now!" The merchant's eyes widened when he saw the gold. He fingered it and gave it a sniff. Satisfied, he handed the scabbard over. "Just terrible, these counterfeiters," he said, not breaking eye contact with Gerald. "Conning honest people for their own personal profit. Just terrible."
  17. "Yeah," said the trader, his suspicion lessening slightly but not vanishing completely. "The watermark is all off. They look they were churned out by a printer- and not a terribly good one, either. Where did you get them?" Gerald tapped Ellis on the shoulder urgently.
  18. The merchant looks surprised at first, then suspicious. "These aren't counterfeit bills, are they?" he challenged.
  19. "Two hundred," said the merchant promptly.
  20. The shopkeeper walked up. "Ah yes! The lady with the valuable sword, and her friend." He glanced curiously at Gerald but did not say anything. "You are right on time; I have just finished crafting your scabbard."
