  1. Atren angled his stairway upwards as the path grew steeper.
  2. Vicius pulled up hard on the control lever, shooting the carriage into the air. He lifted the spyglass to his eye and muttered another curse. "They're already halfway back," he stated. "They do not look as though they have yet been possessed. Perhaps the Queen wishes to meet with them in person? Even so, it will be tough to beat them there."
  3. I imagine each island would have different currencies. (So Miyako would probably have bet whatever currency is used by your island.)
  4. Vicius reached out into the empty air. It shimmered, resolving into the shape of a carriage that floated above the ground, similar to the one the group had stolen earlier. Unlike the other carriage, however, this one looked battered and worn, with no golden decorations. Vicius hopped into the front seat, gesturing for the others to follow.
  5. "No," replied Vicius. "Ours is not Named- though it does have a unique feature that is of particular value to us." They reached the exit of the tunnel, which lay in the shadow of the floating mountain above. Vicius strode confidently over to a patch of empty ground.
  6. "Out," Vicius replied. "We have a hover carriage- we should be able to catch up to the envoy before they make it back to the Queen. Hopefully we are not too late."
  7. "She owns them, body and mind," replied Vicius, leading the three of them out a different way than they had come in. "She commands their every action and knows their every thought."
  8. Vicius muttered something under his breath. "Come," he snapped. "Whatever we do, we must leave this place immediately. We cannot risk the Queen controlling you here."
  9. "The Queen has sent an envoy to their encampment. If they were not warned to keep their names hidden, it is likely they will soon be under her control." At these words, Yerik visibly paled.
  10. Sever sighed. "Alright, I suppose." At that moment, footsteps echoed through the cavern. A few moments later, Vicius burst into the room. "The shipwreck on the beach," he asked, voice edged. "Do any of them know your names?"
  11. Yerik looked down at the ground. "I... don't know. I mean, the Queen..." he shuddered. "I've seen what she can do. But..." he chewed on his lip. "My sister. She came here a long time ago. She could still be alive."
  12. "Even though the people here are suffering?" asked Sever, a note of pleading in his voice. "Even if there's something you can do to help?"
  13. Atren didn't even have to think. The shield flared up in front of the charging lizard-bird, and it rammed into it at full force. At closer range, Atren recognized it for what it was- a Pter'dactyl. Larger and angrier than any he'd seen before, though perhaps the anger was simply from its rather forceful collision with Atren's invisible walls. Whatever the cause, it circled him now, eyes beady. Atren saw only determination in its eyes; the determination of the hunt. Unlike the other monsters, it would not leave him alone. Atren sighed, raised a hand, and sent a bar of shadow through the creature's head. It fell, silently. Atren continued moving.
  14. "No," replied Sever, giving Miyako a look. "But if we did... would you leave? Right now?"
  15. "Of course not," agreed Sever. "These people are possessed. Innocent. We're hardly going to kill them! But if we get in a sticky situation, some raw fighting power could be a lifesaver."
  16. Atren kept jogging up his own personal invisible stairs. So far, there hadn't been any monster that had so much as dented his concentration. A few ground creatures had taken half-hearted swings at him, but there'd been nothing they could do to stop him and they knew it. The flying creatures hadn't fared much better, ramming into his shields a few times before giving up to go chase somebody else. It had been a few minutes since he had been attacked, and that made him wary. The scenery had changed, too, a sure indication that this portion of the hike was different. More difficult. There'd be harder monsters here. As if on cue, a giant, flying, lizard-like creature appeared out of nowhere and hurled itself at Atren.
  17. "Dang," replied Sever pensively. "No wonder Vicius picked you up. Neither of us stands a chance against even one of her puppets." "Uh," said Anikel, taking a step back. "So that's done, then."
  18. Atren glanced down as he passed the group of fellow Reapers-in-training. He spared no more than that as he continued to run through the air.
  19. Anikel, approaching from behind, swung his sword at the wraith. "Not that hard? To slay ten slaves with magical armor and Named weapons?"
  20. Sever's eyes widened. "You... killed them? How? Why?"
  21. Atren ran. Invisible barriers formed beneath his feet as he did so, forming a staircase into the heavens. A few flying monsters attempted to swoop at him, but he formed barriers in front of each and every one. They were distractions. That was all.
  22. Atren stared up at the Inverted Mountain's slopes. It looked... wrong. But perhaps that was the point. Either way, no point in wasting time. He strode confidently towards the foot of the mountain, ready to begin his climb.
  23. "So," asked Sever, "what's this I hear about a fight between you and the Queen?"
