  1. You know, I would never call adolin insecure. This is something I relate with, as I am like him in that way - highly talented in some areas, with more or less his same amount of self-doubt - and I don't consider myself insecure. The thing is, adolin is very skilled, but a lot is asked to him. He is the best duelist, and he knows it, but being the best does not assure you to win every single time, especially against two opponents; there are certainly enough examples of underdogs winning. adolin is a good men, and he knows it, but he is also aware that under stress he may lose control - which turns out to be totally true. He is afraid that he's not up to his father standards, and considering how high are those standards dalinar set for him, I'd say this is also true. Adolin's self-assessment is nothing but accurate, in fact. He knows pretty well how good he is, and he knows his limits. skilled people are often like that - they would not become skilled without setting high standards for themselves, but those high standards carry with them a high chance of failure. today boastfulness seem to be favored in most of society, and so one who is actually accurate in his assessment of his capabilities seem insecure. Adolin is a capable, balanced individual, and it's not his fault the universe is continually conspiring to put him into situations that will shake him. As for his many pre-shallan girls, I got the impression that he himself wasn't all that interested in them. As the most eligible bachelor in alethkar, he was presented an endless string of potential romantic interests, and I can easily see how that would cause him to not be particularly involved from the beginning. Especially after a while, when things start to become routine.
  2. there are some non-confirmed spottings of hoid in white sand, based on the fact that there was a street juggler with the same face in several unconnected scenes (this link will bring you to the white sand spoiler board). that being said, knowing hoid, it is a very safe bet that he visited all the shardworlds. the only place where he may not have been is first of the sun, and only because withoout shard there it may hold no interest to his plan. as for the sand, hoid certainly would be able to get some taldain sand, he certainly would know a way to reinvest it, and he certainly has more than enough investiture to spare to do it / has ways to recover the sand after his display. that said, hoid's first magic, that he had even before the shattering of adonalsium, is some kind of illusionism/lightweaving. so occam's razor dictates that he took a bunch of ordinary sand and used his illusion magic to change its color.
  3. by the way, even if the inquisitors were dead (which, as others already pointed out, is not the case) shardblades still would cut them physically. The only thing I can think of which could be slashed through by a shardblade without taking much damage is one of the sleepless (which appear in edgedancer, and any discussion aboout what they are or what they can do should go under spoiler.)
  4. right, so the diagramists are out of the question, and so are the sons of honor. the ghostbloods, we still have no idea what they are up to, but it can't be too bad, if mraize has recruited shallan - it would be hilarious if they were to meet at a ghostblood meeting. but after events of edgedancer, I was thinking specifically of the skybreakers. adolin getting exiled and being recruited in the (new) skybreakers could work well in the plot. it would remove adolin from the urithiru scene, and put him with szeth and lift, so he would not disappear, he'd keep being a supporting character into someone else's main arc. whatever nale will decide to do after edgedancer is probably going to involve stopping the desolation, so adolin would gladly join the cause. it would basically serve to move him from one group to another, and tie together two story lines that are so far separated. yes, it's a distant possibility, but if brandon has reasons to move adolin in another place, that would be just the way to justify it. anyway, I am really hoping now for some kind of scene where adolin confess to protect someone wrongly accused. "this court rules mr. Nobody guilty of the murder of highprince Sadeas based on evidence that could pass mild scrutiny but is just based on some unlucky coincidences. mr. nobody is to be executed immediately" "No! Release him, he's innocent. I am the one who killed Sadeas" "Adolin, no! Don't do it!" "I must, father. I will take responsibility for my own actions" "[your words are accepted]"
  5. on a side note regarding adolin's ranking in the importance of characters, brandon stated that he wanted to avoid getting tnagled in as many subplots as the wheel of time, but it is inevitable that the story will spread wider. Instead of a dozen main characters in a dozen different places doing different things, we may have four or five main plots; in which case adolin may get some prominence in one of those arcs, which would not be "giiving him his own arc". Exile is also possible as he may end up recruited by one of the many societies we see around - from the ghostbloods to the skybreaker, there are plenty of ways for him to be exiled from alethkar proper and remain into the scene without getting the spotlight. he may have a nervous breakdown, which may allow him to develop a nahel bond - possibly with his sword, possibly with some other spren. he may die in a significant way. If I were to guess, I'd say he'll remain a secondary character in Dalinar's group, and what he did will not have many lasting consequences on him but it would rather have consequences into the bigger politics.
  6. @maxal what you say makes a lot of sense, and you clearly understand adolin much better than i do (feminine intuition, or you being a great adolin fan? :P) well, I really hope adolin remains himself. It would be really painful to see such a good man being turned into something less than he is. I'd rather see him dead on the battlefield. [cue to brandon reading this and thinking "and when my readers will anguish, they will know how good a writer I am to make them feel like that! muahaha!"]
  7. only metallic aluminium is immune, as aluminium comprises a large part of earth's crust (and, being lightweight and not mixing well with molten iron, it is likely to be present in large amounts in the crust of any rocky planet). so just containing trace bauxite would not be enough, or pretty much anything would be immune to magic. it is possible to imagine a living creature making metallic aluminium - though that's not normally the way of living creatures - but then aluminium is not dissolved by water, not before several years at least.
  8. in the original plan adolin got killed? does this come from way of kings prime? @ how adolin sees the deed: I agree with all you say, but adolin also has shown a good emotional resilience once the initial outburst is over. his friends tried to kill him in the arena, but he didn't mope about it like every other character who was betrayed by someone, he got over it in minutes. i don't remember him really being hurt by anything; any tiime,he got over it soon. so i expect him to get over it too, and come to terms. and I expect that if adolin is called to trial (my favourite scenario is still that he jumps in to save some poor sod who is being accused unjustly) I expect him to hold himself well.
  9. Ah, but it wasn't the same thing in front of the law, because Sadeas could claim innocent on both counts - granted, they were paper-thin excuses, and everyone knew it was him, but there was just enough plausible deniability for his needs. and being unable to pin him down, the alethi pretended he was innocent. there are instances in the book where adolin himself remarks on this: everyone knew sadeas did it at the tower, but if adolin punched him, the law would side with sadeas.
  10. eh, morally I also fully support adolin, but by the law he still committed murder; if he is discovered, there will be consequences. and dalinar can't really stop the legal system there, not if he wants to be a good bondsmith. Though, if worse comes to worse and adolin is convicted, I expect him to go at it totally badass. Like "I regret that I had but one villain to kill for my country". Huh. I really hope adolin is not executed. it would explain why he'll get so few pow in the next book, and it certainly would throw a lot of conflict into characters who are comfortable - dalinar foremost, but also shallan and kaladin would be thoroughly shaken.
  11. You would die sooner than others, but not any more quickly. You'd get to experience exactly the same amount of time you'd have experienced otherwise, it's just compressed or stretched. Cadmium/bendalloy do not change your rate of aging. It's like the twin paradox, the twin that traveled in space is younger and will die later, but that's because less time passed for him and he lived for a shorter time; he hasn't prolonged his life or cheated aging in any way.
  12. I think you are reading too narrowly on the oath. It is not a statement of intention on a specific political situation, but rather a way of life. It means that whenever you face a choice, you must try to bring people together rather than dividing them. From helping nations getting along to persuading riotous kids to make peace with each other, you want to strive to unite people.
  13. Clearly this means that the stone shamans are librarians. I wonder how they survived the upheval of Calamity, though.
  14. I can see it happening. It's definitely the kind of thing that adolin would do. right now there's no real proof to connect him to the murder, but if an innocent was blamed in his place adolin would try to help him. [wild speculation] maybe that honorable act will allow adolin to become a radiant? Actually, I think our modern sensitivities would want a leader to not play favourites towards his family, but to do what is best for his followers. which dalinar is doing admirably. I doubt a general in the army who risks losing the battle to better protect his soldier son would be well received.
  15. when you have a friend who's had a lot of girlfriends, but none lasted more than a few weeks, and you call him "adolin". he's also a sanderfan, so he understands what it means
  16. I am failry sure there is a word of brandon somewhere saying that "the mists hug the ground extra strongly", i.e. the ground is invested.
  17. one possible explanation is that since they use lots of clothing in the desert, they are actually shielded a lot from uv. they should be much ddarker in the faces, though.
  18. it was mentioned that plants fertilized with crem grow better than other plants. this is strongly reminescent of what happens in the elendel basin. I don't think a strong comparion with the mist can be made, but it's likely that crem is somewhat invested.
  19. You just gave me a mental image of a rosharan army advancing in a line equipped with mops, scrubbing the ground clean and shiny at its passage...
  20. it would probably be akin to pushing on fine metal dust. you couldn't get much of a hold. though with skill you could maybe keep pushing on different parts of the lake and stay afloat. In any case you do not risk drowning, since you'd float on mercury. you risk death by mercury poisoning, however.
  21. "god" is a term with many possible different meanings. there is the god as intended by the monoteistic religions, omnipotent and omniscient, but there are also the gods as intendedby the ancient greeks, which were basically ageless people with superpowers, and there are also god-kings, spirits of the ancestors, and a lot of other things i probably never heard. but yeah, we call shards gods because we have no better terms. it is quite fitting, because historically men have been callling gods everything that had powers they could not comprehend.
  22. bands of mourning, the epilogue or one of the final chapters. the scene where edwarn is killed by one of the "faceless immortals of the set". the thing said something like "we changed the plan. things here are getting out of hand, so we're going to have to wipe out all life on the planet. you will be allowed to serve in another life. KABOOM". I don't have the book handy to quote exactly. "trell" definitely does not give a damnation about the planet and he'd be fine with destroying it. therefore, anything concerning him or people being manipulated by him (the set, miles, paalm) is something sazed is justified to interere with.
  23. @ hwiles you are right on the whole transparency business. on the plus side, however, sazed is not influencing social policies but only fighting corruption - and the minions of another shard bent on destroying the planet. He's really not much different from a superhero, acting in secret and above the law, but strictly limiting himself to doing it to fight crime - I'm sure nobody would like it if superman went to the major and told him to pass that bill on sewer renovation, for example.
  24. And also on how much armonium is available
  25. actually that happens all the time. not the pope calling specifical senators, but religious leaders telling their followers what to vote, which is the same principle. at least sazed has a good claim at what he says being the actual will of god. also, he doesn't seem to take political sides, he merely want to reduce corruption. unlike in the real world, where it is more common that politicians use religious ties to try to get powerful positions they don't deserve or to favor some interests (at least based on my knowledge of italian politics, where the old party "christian democracy", backed by the religious entourage, was completely wiped out by massive corruption scandals twentyfive years ago. This kind of things don't happen under sazed).
