  1. I was definitely the same way because I am a very religious person as well and like you said he hasn't written something like that before. But I have been trying to figure out for a while now why he didn't write in the marriage scene like he did for Dalinar and Navani, why the marriage felt really sudden to me. I think it's because he has already started distancing the relationship from us to soften the blow, also it makes it way easier for rereads if it does fail because who would want to read about a marriage you know would fail. All that together just kind of started to convince me that it makes sense puzzle wise. I wouldn't bet big money on it because there are way too many things that could happen. But I'd bet Lunch on it. Yeah I never thought of that man that would give Tyn a HUGE reread value, I love that. It would also be the kind of moment where Veil would look to persona SHallan and say " I told you" haha
  2. I have a couple of credits burning a hole in my pocket from audible and I need to know, what are your favorite audiobooks you have listened to? What are some that a Sanderson fan would enjoy?
  3. I agree with the theory especially when it comes to Windrunners and windspren... but the others I'm not sure about. For this reason. Windspren are located in the physical realm Primarily, so much so that the crew of the ship in shadesmar was shocked to see one. That means that there investiture is mainly in the spirit realm. Great candidate for shardplate! However the rest of these seem to come and go suggesting more cognitive location. Especially gloryspren which we saw in the cognitve realm! So to me that says we are missing something because especially with brandons magic systems there are clear patterns usually. Now maybe because of adhesion Kaladin can bond his own shardplate easily and the others have to get help from a bondsmith to get their spren physical but that's a lot of conjecture.
  4. As the title says I believe that Shallan and Adolin will get divorced let me explain. First, I believe that Veil contains the most truthful version of who Shallan really is, I go into much greater detail in this linked post below so feel free to check my logic there. And we know who Veil prefers romantically and what she thinks of Adolin. Next we have this WoB: Now this was Pre-Oatherbringer but I still think this is relevant because what do you think this is mimicking? I propose that this situation is mimicking the other Triangle, Gavilar-Navani-Dalinar. And we do know how that one ended. Now I dont see Adolin dying and I am NOT saying that Kaladin will end up with Shallan. What I am saying that it would open up a lot of things storywise. Next we have almost every other kind of relationship you can imagine: Dalinar and Navani widowed and remarried, Sebarial and Palona not married, and a mentions of a Gay romance. Brandon usually likes the full set of these things I feel. And Lastly the marriage felt really rushed, it felt hasty and we didn't even get to see it! Maybe I'm reading too much into this but my gut tells me there is something there. Some of the issues divorce would bring up to the series: 1. More problems with the Vorin Church. I'm not sure how they view divorce but I'm going to go out on a limb and say they aren't fans of it and I think Brandon with those sons of honor is looking to explore the Vorin Church more as an organization. 2. Broken Oaths and Syl. IF Shallan did try to pursue Kaladin, or vice versa, after a divorce I don't think Syl would be as up for it as she originally was since she is honor spren, so that added dynamic would add a lot of interest and tension. 3. Adolin broken. People want Adolin Prince Charming to be more fleshed out and interesting. Well with the storm coming his way for Sadeas murder and a Painful Divorce I think they may get what they wish for. These are all conflicts that would give brandon a TON to write about and add strength to the future books.
  5. I keep thinking that this thread is done and somehow it keeps dragging me back in haha. @SLNC and I agree on a lot of things https://brandonsanderson.com/annotation-the-way-of-kings-chapter-8 From this I can only assume(!), that should reintegration occur, that Veil will be a much, much more character-defining part of realShallan. personaShallan won't be gone, but just not as character-defining as she is now. There is a reason many relationships don't end well, when one partner changes so much, that the love just fizzles out. I'm not saying, that it is impossible, but even if Adolin still loves realShallan... How does realShallan think about it? Veil doesn't like Adolin as a romantic partner. There are always two sides to it. Veil really feels like the part of Shallan that has the most truth to her to me. I actually made a whole post about it here: and I believe that Shallan will have to admit that some point soon and it will create a lot of questions and doubts in her mind. Which kind of leads me to return to a statement I made in another thread. I really would not surprise me if Shallan and Adolin get divorced. The fact we didn't even see the wedding and how rushed it feels really leads me to believe that this isn't over by a long shot and drama will follow.
  6. Great post! I really loved this because the fact that part of the diagram still stood out to dumb taravangian really supports this to me. Also Welcome! have some rep on me!
  7. I guess this is the first time I've heard of the term and from context I think I get the general jist but I need to ask anyways. What is an Avalanche?
  8. Thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah I genuinely laughed at this haha.
  9. Thanks! Does anyone have a link to that? That is super interesting
  10. Surprise another Shallan thread! The Fact that we have so much to talk about her means that Brandon must have done something right (or something very wrong ). But I wanted to talk about her, and not how she reacts to others, or whether she is a great or horrible character. In Oathbringer We got introduced to the fact that Shallan is viewing herself as different people or personalities. This post will seek to analyze them and try to show you who shallan really is. For consistency sake we are going to label the 3 personalities we mainly interact with in oathbringer as Veil, Radiant, and maskShallan. maskShallan refers to the times that shallan is without an illusion or when she is trying to be the Shallan she is known for publicly. Let’s start with who I consider the easiest to analyze, and that is Radiant. Radiant was created as a means to deal with the truth Shallan spoke at the end of WoR, that she is a murderer and used Pattern to kill her mom. Radiant consists of skills that Shallan was uncomfortable with using at the moment, this includes Shardblade fighting, and scholarship. Now some of you may be questioning why I put scholarship in there and I will address that later on (the organization of this is pretty hard to do…). Radiant also embodies Shallans perception of power and authority most of which she perceives from Jasnah and thus Radiant feels like a copy of a copy of Jasnah sometimes. It definitely is a copy but lacks the detail and personality of the original. Radiant has lots of skills and utility of SHallan but her personality I would argue Is not of Shallan but perhaps what Shallan wishes she was sometimes. Now let’s talk maskShallan. This is the one we are at the same time most familiar with and least familiar with because maskShallan’s purpose is one abstract thing, Comfort/Survival. maskShallan contains what Shallan needs to get through her day by day and helps her avoid anything that causes her discomfort/mental anguish. maskShallan was the character we were most familiar with but she has underwent some changes recently as her newest oath has reintroduced a memory she can no longer forget. This means she must make sure she does not think about it. She cannot have time to ponder things she must keep herself busy. Now what does scholarship require? Thinking. This is why she had to push scholarship and analyzing onto Radiant, this is one of the reasons why maskShallan had to run away from the lessons with Jasnah and go to Kolinar, if she has free time then she will have to confront who she is. This is also why when Shallan is at all of the meetings she is constantly drawing rather than taking notes or paying attention. Drawing is one of the things she can do to relax her mind to keep herself busy, she can no longer distract herself with random scholarship like she did in WoR only drawing will work now. Now Veil is complex, not that the others aren’t, but Veil is hard to pin down. We have seen hints of the parts that make up Veil from early in her flashbacks and likely before. Veil is the parts of her that would be not approved of by high society. This includes thieving, verbal jabs, improper jokes and also her painful backstory, maybe even her pain in general As she always says that Veil could deal with it. When you look at it this way you can see that veils tendencies with “the guys” is very similar to the way she acted with her brothers being “witty”. Veil also has Shallans goto method of solving problems, Thieving. When Shallans family was in trouble the solutin she came up with was to steal a soulcaster from Jasnah. Which she succeeded in with flying colors like a natural! She perfectly impersonated wanting to be jasnah ward, because remember this was her goal was to become jasnahs ward. Not to learn and study with Jasnah (But whether Scholarship is natural to Shallan or is something she formed herself to be as a disguise unconsciously to fool jasnah is another topic) she needed to get close to so she could take that soulcaster. Other options never entered serious consideration. Likewise when she was shipwrecked in danger of freezing to death she had to con the slavers into thinking she was worth their resources, that she was very important. Adolin started out as a con as well because she needed the relationship to save her family. So as @PhineasGage @Ailvara discussed in another thread Remember all of this happened or started before Shallan created Veil… or at least the illusion of Veil. The other trait that Veil possesses at this time is child Shallan's desire to rescue others. Shallan in the flashbacks was trying to save her family from themselves by helping them find interests or saving them from debts and so on. Veil in Oathbringer has this…. I don't know when it shifted over to her but it is obviously there during the Kolinar parts as she is giving food to the poor and trying to help the city. I also believe that veil contains some of the True Shallan that we haven’t been introduced to yet and is buried deep in her not wanting to be seen by anybody, EVER! As @SLNC posted in another thread "This isn't personaShallan. personaShallan is the 'prim, excitable girl who had been trained by cautious Vorin society.' ... If this is realShallan, then I would place her closer to Veil... " So who is the real Shallan, The obvious answer is that she is a blend of all 3 of them plus a more scary visceral wild part we don’t know much about. However I do believe as the sleepless wrote And at this point I would say Veil contains the most Truth of the three we know. Also thanks to everyone in the Adolin-Shallan-Kaladin thread for the much discussion about this.
  11. Its a really good point but I wonder if since windspren mainly are mainly manifest on the physical realm, not cognitive realm, that is why they don't scream. They do however absorb stormlight from surgebinders which I thought was interesting.
  12. Not sure but I think it just got overlooked. I know that originally in WoR Jasnah wasnt going to be in the Cognitive realm so maybe in the outlines it kind of got overlooked that the two of them have no relationship at all. Or maybe it just doesn't matter cause Jasnah is treated kind of as a side character right now and there was more important things to do with her then develop something with bridgeboy
  13. While we are talking about Shallan I see people saying that shallan has spoken four truths so far. Do we know this for fact somewhere? or are we assuming based off of the shardblade?
  14. Yeah I agree with what aemetha said above. We know that the purpose of the truths is to help you gain a greater awareness of oneself It kind of reminds me that I read somewhere that there is apparently a WoB that says not all Knights Radients have 5 oaths? Has anyone else seen this? Cause if that is true maybe the number of truths required are different or more of a linear progression rather than stepped progression
  15. I know right! I really hope we see one on screen but I doubt it. I bet one of them is like "I only help others if it helps me cause I'm selfish", or "The cosmere as I know it is not truly real but lives on in the heart of others" if we want to get really 4th wall here. I guess we dont know but the fact that he spoke the first oath to it has me pretty much sold that he did.
  16. We know that Hoid/Wit bonded a cryptic at the end of Oathbringer So what truths do you guys think he must speak? Do you think he is self aware enough that he will be a full Lightweaver next we see him or does he still have a journey of self discovery to go on?
  17. This isn't personaShallan. personaShallan is the "prim, excitable girl who had been trained by cautious Vorin society." And personaShallan is what Adolin has been seeing primarily. And what he fell in love with. If this is realShallan, then I would place her closer to Veil... And we both know who Veil prefers. I love this and I have been thinking along the same lines as this. Enough so that I have been working on a whole post about it, but Shallan feels kind of over talked right now. But realShallan seems pretty deeply buried and dark and I'm sure there are more surprises about her background for us to read about still.
  18. Yeah I briefly looked over the document but realShallan is pretty confusing and also we dont really know who realShallan is and Brandon I'm quite convinced has done that on purpose to throw us on our heads again in the next book or two.
  19. Sounds an awful like when he first met Shallan doesnt it? If Kaladin character is one thing he does change his mind about people as he gets to know them.
  20. It's a possibility, but I have doubts about it. I would guess before or around the same time that Kaladin was rescuing Skar and company that he tried to bring his family back... I mean Kaladin said he would be back for them. But Unless the whole town comes there is no way Lirin is agreeing to it and Roshone is not going to want to go with Kaladin somewhere and half the town will probably think that radients are evil and traitors. I mean Lirins schtick is to disagree with kaladin on things.
  21. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought this I truly feel that Moash truly mourns the lost of bridge four and would not do anything to hurt any of them... unless they got between him and his revenge. To me the Salute said "I succeeded in doing what I needed to do, I wont hurt you and yours for I am not your enemy" So in short Moashs priorities 1. Revenge 2. Kaladin/Bridge four
  22. It will be really interesting to see but I bet it will have as much to do with Roshar as Yolen Lightweaving has to do with Roshar Lightweaving. Makes me wonder what was stored in that gem and what can be stored in gems cosmere wide.
  23. Hey guys here is a post I have been thinking and working on a while so hopefully you enjoy. I have been thinking about the following WoB. Once I read this I wanted to know where those Gemhearts might be settling So I have done some research. On how Storms move materials. The first shows the process of Saltation and Creep which will be the main ways animal corpses (and thereby gemhearts) are going to be traveling during a storm. The second shows how storm surges can deposit and move debris. http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/elements/dustwind.htm https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1306/pdf/c1306_ch6_g.pdf We know the main way these corpses will be traveling is through saltation because Dalinar was almost hit by a boulder in Alethkar. (If someone can provide me the quote I will add it here) Now the main thing that will stop Saltation and Creep would be natural barriers such as mountains and bodies of water that will prevent the winds from continuing to move them along. So I marked two versions of the roshar map. This first assumes that the storms comes directly from the east and moves straight west. Red Highlights natural places that gemhearts would likely collect over time from the wind, Green indicates where they would likely collect due to massive amounts of water draining, and Blue indicates the direction I assume the wind is blowing. I’m sure I missed Spots especially with the green as I could only assume the direction of water drainage based on rivers. Map two operates under the assumption that the start in the bottom left of the map indicates the south pole axis and the lines coming from it represent longitude lines. If so this is where things would collect if the storm moved perpendicular to those lines. Now one interesting thing in both of these maps is that you can see Rira has a natural collection point on both of these maps. And what do we know that Rira has that they use to execute criminals? Greatshells! I wonder if greatshells have such large gemhearts because they have an abundance of corpses they feast on with gemhearts inside them. Just a thought. Now moving on to the next WoB I think that Brandon is referring to Soulcasting mainly here and we know that when gems are used soulcast they crack into smaller pieces and eventually into dust. My question to you guys is, do you think that the storms collect this dust to return it to the pool or does the art of soulcasting send bits of it back to the pool in tiny increments? My current Theory is this. Most of the reclamation of gemhearts i happening in the oceans or large bodies of water. This either happens through A: Greatshells which act as gemstone/heart filters and collect/eat smaller pieces to grow there own to their massive sizes. B: We don't know what is at the bottom of the ocean. Brandon said there is but one tectonic plate on the world so something down there converts them back into there spiritual component then leaks them back through the creatures Thanks for reading Update: I just found this amazing post by @Otto Didact So I am leaning towards the second map at this point though it does bring up an interesting question of if the storm moves slower the further north and south you go or if the storm moves in a way we haven't thought of yet. Though I now notice that the placement of the star does not line up with where his axis is so yeah I need to modify my map a bit and maybe use his map if I get his permission.
  24. I think you are getting Laral mixed up with Roshone, or Aesudan (Side note the pronunciation of the first syllable of her name I find rather appropriate). We actually dont know a ton about Laral. We know she had dreams of Kaladin getting a shardblade and presumably marry him, we know she kind of got stuck in Hearthstone with a different brighteyed family when her father died, and we know she got stuck marrying an old man for political reasons. I don't see anything in there that makes her the most horrible of lighteyed society. So far I think she has made way less egregious choices than whiny Elhokar. We also know that she has the respect of her people. Taking all of this into consideration I fail to see how she could be considered the "worst kind of lighteyes"
