Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted! Your bane is that you are now a 3rd tier super hero, nicknamed Dr. Xerox. No cushy chair at the Justice League for you, no special quarters in Avengers tower, not even a room at the X-men complex. Just a duplex in Des Moines that you share with Kid Stretch, and Captain Flasbulb. Every great power is by necessity limited, the constraint on your power is that you have to eat a volume of food equal in mass to the object you copy (sorry, no copying the Eiffel tower) and your copies all come out monochromatic gray. But the upside to that is that if you don't mind eating gray food, you can eat pretty much any food you can think of in perpetuity (the inputs equal the outputs which become the inputs, etc, etc) I wish that I could create a working jetpack, that is safe and easily controllable, out of common household materials. -

The best 4 player Mariokart song ever, where everyone is racing as Link. -
Just saw on Tor's website that The God Is Not Willing is going to be released on November 9th of this year. They also put the Prologue for it (which Erickson had previewed on his Facebook page) up on their website. https://www.tor.com/2021/05/11/excerpts-steven-erikson-malazan-the-god-is-not-willing-prologue/

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted. Knowing nothing about Terran history, the Nightwatcher is forced to base her understanding of human history solely on the contents of your pockets, in which you have a snickers bar wrapper, 47 cents in change (US currency), and a receipt from Starbucks detailing the purchase of a birthday cake pop and a grande carmel machiatto. Needless to say, being light on information she opts to create a diorama for you, wherein President Lincoln and president Eisenhower are shown rowing a canoe made from a snickers bar with oars shaped like cake pops down a carmel macchiato river, while George Washington waves to them from the shore. The production value is top notch, you get an A+ for the sheer technical prowess displayed in the construction of the miniature animatronic presidents and the manner in which the macchiato river is recirculated to create a gorgeous waterfall and a perpetually flowing river. Oh yeah, for some reason, both Eisenhower and Lincoln are wearing coonskin caps and are singing Frere Jacques. I wish that in the cosmic struggle between order and chaos, that enthalpy was winning instead of entropy. -

Just an idea, but maybe the 5th oath is at its heart a conservative one. Maybe it is "I will protect the status quo." (queue the chorus of boos and onslaught of rotten vegetables, I'm ready for them). -

What Are You Listening To Now?

I'd never heard Gillian Welch before, Time (the revelator) is one of the best songs I've heard this year! I love Gordon Lightfoot, I once killed a party when I was in college by showing up with my gord's Gold volume 2 tape and putting on the Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald. Not a party song I guess. Let's take the Twang train down south again to Austin Texas, to get a trio of songs from one of the best singer/songwriters alive today, Sam Baker. This first song is an autobiographical number about how he was nearly killed by a bomb planted by the Shining path guerrillas that exploded on a commuter train he was riding on in Peru. This one Circles back to Townes Van Zandt, with a different take on Waiting Round to Die. And one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard, about Baker's fingers that were broken in the train explosion and which he's never been able to use since the accident. -

Those were beautiful! Chugga Chugga, Twang Twang!! Townes wrote it, Merle and Willie made it famous but Hoyt Axton sang it the best (and yes, I am listening to this song an unhealthy amount) And a couple more that were written by the man with the golden voice, Mr. Hoyt Axton. -

Who LOVES The Legend of Zelda!

Hahaha, my daughters and I were checking the butterflies on a recent dog walk to see if they might have some beneficial effects if we cooked them up with some deer bones (lots of hunters use the BLM trails in Oregon, and one of my dogs is a deer bone coniseur.) I was just out looking for Morrels, and I turned over a burned out log and found a hightail lizard: And later I found a hot footed frog: -
Who LOVES The Legend of Zelda!
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Ironwill2112's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Breath of the Wild is one of the best games of all times, the only problem is that the boundary between reality and the simulated reality of Hyrule has begun to blur. When walking my dogs through the wilds of Oregon, I have found quite a few Koroks (Spoilered below because they're animated gif) I'm going to try eating some raw fish and see if that replenishes my hearts.... -

What Are You Reading, Part 2
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Chaos's topic in Entertainment Discussion
@Use the Falchion and @Ammanas, just wanted to let you guys know that I think one of the best ways to experience the Odyssey is the Fagles translation in audiobook form read by Ian McKellen, it's phenomenal! Audible also has the Wilson translation read by Clair Danes, but I like the rhythm and phrasing of the Fagle translation better, and Ian McKellen (one of the finest actors ever) does a great job of pulling out the through line of meaning from the sometimes complicated and hard to follow passages. @Orlionra, if you are ever in Tacoma Washington, go to the Antique Sandwich Shop, which is just a bit south of Point Defiance Zoo. Order their reuben which is served on warm marbled rye, and features a smear of mayo, some delightful low key swiss cheese, perfect pastrami, and a liberal portion of sauerkraut. Also get a chocolate shake, and only after trying this can you truly say that you hate sauerkraut, to know that you truly can't stand it you must first experience it in it's most exalted form, that my friend is the true test. -

I didn't know it had that far superior appellation, but you are absolutely correct. I think we have seen the last of the nickname Ultima Thule though, there's always going to be something that is the farthest distant reachable object. Looking into this more, I found some cool spectroscopic images of the asteroid formerly known as Ultima Thule, Spoilered below. Ones a minds eye type where you stare past the double images until you have the right eye focal length to get them to merge, the other is the red and blue 3d Pic. NASA also has a rotatable 3D model view of Arrokoth on this information page. Arrokoth orbits at a distance of about 4 billion miles from the sun (44.6 au) and has a year that is 239 earth years long. -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted. A shaft of golden light splits the sky, and accompanied by a chorus of angelic trumpets, your mushroom topped pizza floats down the brilliant column of light. Your mouth watering pizza is topped with a savory looking assortment of wild foraged mushrooms, you have some Amanita phalloides, Galerina marginatas, Amanita ocreata, Agaricus xanthodermus, Russula emiticas, Gymnopilus spectabalis, Omphalotus olearius, Psilocybe cubensis, and some Amanita muscaria. Unfortunately, all of those mushrooms are poisonous, but they do provide you the full gamut of conditions that cause violent eruptions from most of your orifices. The A. xanothodermus (the yellow stainer) will make you severely nauseous and R. emetica (the sickener) will make you vomit and possibly get diarrhea. O. olearius (the Jack-o-lantern mushroom which is bio-luminescent) will give you severe cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. The A. muscaria (the fly agarica, the red capped w/ white warts mushroom that looks like a mario mushroom) will make you sick but on the plus side is mildly to severly hallucinogenic. Also, to help you enjoy your last 3 weeks on the planet (unless you get serious medical intervention) the G. spectabilis (the Big Laughing Gym mushroom) and the P. cubensis have enough psychoactive compounds to make it an interesting end for sure. And the real treats on your pizza are the A. phalloides (the Death cap), the A. ocreata (the Destroying angel) and the G. marginata (the funeral bell, or deadly skull cap) which contain enough deadly amatoxins to make you initially violently ill. But the real treat comes 3 weeks down the line from the original poisoning, when you kidneys stop working altogether because the amatoxins have been silently and steathily destroying them. But the Nightwatcher felt a little bad for you, so you also got a really cool magic bib with a cute little mushroom character on it. When wearing this bib, you can belch without making any noise. Pretty sweet. I wish I had a magic box that had an unending supply of perfectly fresh, perfectly delicious Morrel mushrooms, and that I receive no bane that would prevent me from eating them. Yum! -
The interesting thing about the cognitive burrito is that it doesn't have enough guacamole. But the cognitive realm is weird like that. The spike was a special hemalurgic construct that was designed to steal your plot relevance. This is now the story of The Captain, swashbuckler, world traveler, the Survivor of Bird Swarms, and a member of a very mysterious secret society. But since you (yes you reading this right now, I have broken the third wall and am speaking directly into your mind, because you are reading this (or possibly having it read aloud by a text to speech engine**)) are that hemalurgic construct, you now are The Captain. Do you: Give the two parrots on your shoulders both a cracker Begin a long and complicated monologue about the nature of the Secret Society you belong to. Flip up your diamond encrusted skull eyepatch to show that you have another eyepatch on underneath it because there's always another eyepatch. Head back to newly unearthed ruins adjacent to the ancient palace complex of Knossos in Crete. Eat another cognitive burrito and maybe finish your fully imaginary meal up with an order of cognitive churros. ** YouAreNowTheCaptain_TTS.mp3

Well, well, all the hearts doth melt as the mustachioed svelt, world-hopping Felt strolls in to say heartfelt words bout the hand he has been dealt. Looking over at the scabbarded sword sharing the stage with him, Felt just shakes his head, and like Thom Merrilin, blows out his mustaches (cuz why not). (Roast Spoilered below) Just have to say, if it goes this way, with no roast by @Random Bystander today, that it's not Felt's fault he keeps winning by default.

Sorry to double post but everybody's favorite extra-terran flying machine, Ingenuity, has been positioned for deployment and the first flight is scheduled for sometime in the first week of April. The Perseverance lander is looking for a good launch site now, and the engineers are keeping the launch time fluid to maximize environmental conditions for the maiden flight. Spoilered below are some pictures from the Perseverance raw image feed of Ingenuity maneuvering into touchdown position: Sweet! -

@NebularSkies that's beautiful! That's my new mental image for the Dawnshard mural. Really nice work! Welcome to the Shard too by the way! -
Standing tall, in your super suit made of hardened pigeon poop, you sweep your hand through your hair, polish your teeth with your tongue, and then with a winning smile turn towards the monitor and declaim, "What do you want, The Captain?" The Captain, in neon green pantaloons and with parrots on both shoulders, flips up her diamond encrusted skull motif eyepatch and gives you a saucy wink and says, "Oh, I think you know Birdman, I think you know exactly what I want!" Do you: Pretend to know what The Captain wants, and smile and nod. Covertly send your bird army to attack her, while you keep talking to her to keep her distracted. Change the channel on your monitor to play some more Mario Kart with your bird henchmen. Polish your teeth again with your tongue, and then turn a Blue Steel look on the Captain.

Nope. TPBM has seen a UFO, or has some other interesting paranormal encounter they can describe.
