Thanks @Ghanderflaffle for the extension! I humbly present to you a thoroughly deplorable little number, that I think will incite much booing and enraged shaking of fists, so without further ado, here is the most hated man in the Cosmere doing his thing: *EDIT* Put it in a spoiler tag for length and Roshar reasons, and fixed a couple typos while I was at it.

17th Shard Astronomy Club
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in General Discussion
Sweet! I'm excited to see both planets at the same time through the telescope tomorrow, hope the forecast holds and we get sunny skies. Yeah, it's been fun watching them close in on each other, I've been watching them since the spring. If you have clear skies tomorrow you can still see them without a telescope as optically a single planet, and can see both of planets at the same time through a telescope. 0.2° of separation is still remarkably close! -

The great conjunction is tonight, it's cloudy here in Eugene today, but I think we'll catch the pretty good conjunction tomorrow night when it's clear. Saturn and Jupiter will still be visible at the same time at 80x magnification, so if you're like us and won't be able to see them within 0.1° of each other, you can maybe see them tomorrow together in the eyepiece of your telescope. Looking at Sky Safari, they are still going to be within 0.2° of each other tomorrow, so we could even see them together with our 8mm lens at 250x magnification. The circle below is 0.2° in diameter. -

Try copying from Word into Notepad, and then copy it and paste it to the forum from Notepad, that should remove the all of the text formatting. Or if you are on Mac you can try just clearing the text formatting in Word before you copy and paste, in Word use the menu command EDIT>Clear>Clear Formatting. -
New T Shirt (RoW update)
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in Stormlight Archive
It was based on @RShara's theory after Oathbringer that Taravangian was a plant by Cultivation, a secret covert agent placed inside Odium's perimeter to mess up his plans. Gotta admit, she was right, but not really in the way that we had been thinking (like mess up his plans at a key moment, not freaking Nightblood the Vessel and become Odium). Here's the original T-Shirt design, I actually spray paint stenciled a version of this on a t-shirt to wear to the Seattle Skyward signing. -
Farewell interludes
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Shaukan-son-Hasweth's topic in Stormlight Archive
This has my vote. Either an interlude or, dare I hope, a novella, from Mraize's POV going to talk to Thaidakar, that is the stuff of dreams right there! I agree that I miss the old style inteludes, the snippets that we get from "An Accountability of Virtue" in Ellista's Oathbringer interlude are some of the funniest moments in all of Brandon's work. In Memorium of the Interludes we have lost, I hold up a glass and Axies you a collective question, If you had to make Ellista all of your favorite Inerludes, could you have Rysn to this challenge? Lift your glass with me Kaza I have a Teft time drinking alone, and though Ym starting to drift in my thoughts, don't worry I'll get Baxil to the point way before you say what Zahel is this all leading to. As I was saying, and I'm not Lhan when I say this, the Interludes from Stormlight Archive have Szeth the bar very high, and I am not Pulli-ing your leg when I'm Adin the fact that I think Brandon will come back to the wider scoped interlude, because Hesina the fact that we love them dearly.- 16 replies

So, based on the seriously unexpected turn of events in RoW, I thought that you, @RShara, would like to know that the "T is Plant" shirt (still a classic line) has been duly updated, here it is:

Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in General Discussion
I just checked this out on SkySafari, looks like the point of maximum conjunction that would have been visible was on Sunday, July 16th just after sunset, but Jupiter and Saturn were only about 10° above the horizon after sunset, so definitely a short window to view the Conjunction then (at least in higher lattitudes because it was happening in summer). Saturn and Jupiter were actually closest around sunrise, but they weren't above the horizon then (at least in Eugene Oregon). Interesting to think what the place you live would have been like back in 1623... The smallest circle in the screenshot around Jupiter is .1° in diameter. Cool to see that the 4 largest Jovian satellites were also stretched out in a line for this conjunction, would have been a fun one to see for sure! Galileo created his first telescope in 1609, so in 1623 the telescope was a pretty new invention. Here's an article that goes into more detail about the why the 1623 great conjunction may have passed by largely unobserved (at least through a telescope). https://whenthecurveslineup.com/2020/02/20/1623-the-great-conjunction-of-jupiter-and-saturn/ Haha, yeah, if it's clear out on the 13th just bundle up and take a thermos of hot chocolate. It's worth it! -
Prediction: Odium’s champion will be Gavinor
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to coolsnow7's topic in Stormlight Archive
Here's a loophole for the loophole. 10 days in the future, on the top of Urithiru, the curtain is drawn and Odium's voice booms out, "My champion is young Gavinor, you lose either way Dalinar!" Dalinar, with his reading glasses on, walks confidently towards young Gavinor. Putting his arms reassuringly on Gav's shoulders he says, "My champion is Time. Live a good full life son, and next time just ask me or nana for more lavis cakes instead of making a deal with the God of Hatred. Did they at least have lots of sprinkles?"- 63 replies

Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Hoiditthroughthegrapevine's topic in General Discussion
Welcome to the club @Ookla the Uscritic! Don't know much about Dobsonian telescopes, can't help you out there, but in two weeks, on the Winter Solstice (Monday December 21st) there's going to be a Great Conjunction where Saturn and Jupiter are going to separated by only .1°. This is the closest they've been since 1623! You can watch starting tonight as Jupiter and Saturn get closer and closer together. They'll be visible to the SW shortly after sunset and they're only 3° apart tonight. Here's a quick animation of the great conjunction starting from tomorrow night through the 21st. The annual geminid meteor showers are on now too, and will peak on December 13th/14th. Here's an article from Nasa about both the Conjunction and the Meteor showers: https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/resources/2567/whats-up-december-2020-video/ -
Rhythm of War Full Book Reactions
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Chaos's topic in Stormlight Archive
Welcome to the shard! Nice analogy with the lead balloon by the way. The general consensus seems to be that most people like RoW. I too was a bit surprised by this, but everybody comes at this things from different angles and I guess what bothers me isn't so much of an issue to other people. I pre-ordered RoW, but I have yet to receive my book (crazy right?), so I listened to the audiobook instead of reading it my first time through like I normally do, and maybe that has something to do with why I liked it less. Kate Reading and Michael Kramer sounded a little tired or something, you could almost hear Kate's eyes glazing over when she was mentioning another facet of Voidlight/Towerlight/Anti-light, etc. I actually haven't liked much that Brandon's released from Skyward on, and funny enough I liked Dawnshard more than RoW, but Dawnshard is my second to least favorite SLA story. Again, the Akinah setting seemed underdeveloped. It is an interesting place to be in, not dying from anticipation for the next SLA book or not even really caring to speculate about what's going to happen in the next SLA book. I was all in before, but I think I might be drifting out. There's never been a better group of fans than those on the Shard, intelligent, creative and just marvelous people, but that's really all that's keeping me here. Just wait, Lost Metal will come out and I'll be an effusive fan boy again. Haha, could happen. -

Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in General Discussion
Congrats you wiley Toaster you! Whenever I see your username, I always think of the Toaster in Hardware Wars with the voice over "See incredible celestial battles ablaze with death dealing weaponry". This was not easy to do, but then again the important things in life rarely are, in honor of your 5 year anniversary I made a gif of the Toaster firing in Hardware Wars using my cellphone screen capture. This one's for you @Toaster Retribution Here's a link to the video spoilered below. The important bit with the Toaster firing is 1:01 into the video. -
Here's a picture of a fallen tree in the woods today, I didn't edit the color at all, the tree was actually even more purple looking than in the picture. Crazy.

I thought that Chantrelle season was over and that we wouldn't be getting any candy caps this year. Sometimes it's great to be wrong! We got a ton of candy caps today, and they're just starting to pop up! And I invite you to play a game that I find to be one of the very best: See how many Chantrelles you can spot in the image spoilered below: Over the past 2 days we got 4.5 lbs of Chantrelles! Life is good, life is good.

The mystery of the missing Rlain
Hoiditthroughthegrapevine replied to Necessary Eagle's topic in Stormlight Archive
I actually have a theory about this. I think Rlain is a ghostblood. Primary evidence, Shallan informs Mraize that Sja-Anat agreed to send one of her children to inspect the ghostblood at Urithiru to find a worthy bond mate without guaranteeing that it would be Mraize. We learned in Row that one of the traitorous Sleepless was working with the ghostbloods. Later in the book we find out that the corrupted Mistspren that bonds with Rlain was voidspren that had been hiding in a cremling. Also, when Rlain is talking about staying at Urithiru instead of joining Venli's group he mentions that he was an outsider to both the Humans and the Singers, so he it was natural for him to create a bridge and that he's been a spy. I only have the audio book (my pre-ordered copy hasn't come yet), but that passage is particularly interesting how he phrases it, if anyone who has the ebook could look that part up and post it I'd be much obliged. -
I'm grateful that Brandon writes stories that have a moral imperative. They are entertaining first and foremost, but I think everyone comes away from reading one of Brandon's books with a drive to be a better person. I'm thankful too for this community. This is the only forum that I care to participate in, and the people here are as kind as they are intelligent. @JoyBlu those are amazing cakes!!
