  1. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Adolin and his sword that wants to kind of wake up a little bit. Most of the Knights Radiant have some sort of break in their mind, mental <a little> problem. Where Adolin appears to be the person in Stormlight that's most comfortable with himself. Is that going to cause a problem, or is maybe the fact that he, at least in his mind, murdered Sadeas, going to help bring that to fruition or give us a way towards something like that? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Let's, first off, say I'm not going to repeat this one because it's super spoilery. So let's try to talk around the spoilers. In the Stormlight Archive, there is a tradition among the Knights Radiant that certain traumas and/or psychological handicaps are effective in drawing the attention of a spren. I haven't actually said if that is true or if that's [just] a tradition of theirs. But there is a tradition among the Knights Radiant. that they have noticed something consistent. Does it mean that you have to in order to be a Knight Radiant? Well, there is somebody that I would call extremely psychologically well-adjusted, that by the end of the third book is well on the way to Knighthood. There is something going on there, they are noticing something true. But it might not be as exclusionary as they think it is. Footnote: Brandon clarified this question in this exchange. source Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] How was Shallan able to bond with Pattern before she was broken? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] She was open to him even before she went through a lot of that turmoil Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] I thought everybody had to be broken in order to-- Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Well, that's their philosophy in-world. But I'm not going to say whether it's correct or wrong. I will imply that there are other means as well. source
  2. Returned are fine obstetricians. Rathalas aims for obsolescence. Rusts arclo fumes oreseor.
  3. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] We know Ati chose how Ruin was interpreted, in that he was a card-cackling maniac. Could someone so differently interpret a Shard as to change its name to be something different? Could someone pick up the Shard of Ruin and think I'm the Shard of Change? Or could someone pick up the Shard of Honor and think-- Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] *hesitantly* Yes. To an extent. The interpretation, what you call a thing-- I think it would be arguable either way in-world, regardless of what they call themselves. There are those who would say the core intent is still there and you can't shift it that far, and others would argue you can shift it far enough to change the definition to a synonym. You see evidence of someone claiming this in the books. I'm not gonna confirm or deny for you whether that is actually a thing or not. source Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] When Dalinar became Unity, how much investiture of Cultivation did he have? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] So, RAFO, RAFO, RAFO. He called himself Unity, I'm not going to say what that necessarily means. source In the first Brandon tells us that a shard can be redefined. Odium would not have thought that Dalinar who was supposed to be his guy could ascend even for a short period much less take in enough power to open honor's perpendicularity and redefine himself. In the second Brandon notes that Dalinar calls himself Unity which leans into a redefinition of honor rather than a shard whose power is trapped and whose elantrian Sdna would not be active off world. If and it is a very tentative if that Ire= Iriali that does not explain the way that a shard like Dominion whose main focus seemed to be Fdjordell would suddenly transform Dalinar. Why not Gavilar the one who set off for dominion. Besides he is not of Iriali blood his wife was so it would make more sense to apply to his sons. Why would it impact him?
  4. Chag Sameach @Silva, @Trizee, @Del-light-full, and @Kingsdaughter613 as well as any other jewish sharders that I might have missed.

  5. I submit @Calderis that I should have searched further and discovered a newer WoB than the one that I quoted.
  6. Oudeis16 We've seen people Ascend. If it were in the position to do so, could Nightblood take up a Shard? Brandon Sanderson This is a RAFO, as I'm not specifically willing to comment on whether or not power that has become self-aware (Seons, Nightblood, Spren) can Ascend or not. source
  7. 212. If someone invites you on a quest to defeat some evil force/being stay close as the life you save is your own. 213. Never refuse the request of the old beggar at your door it will end badly.
  8. Happy Birthday servant of the Lord beaver!!

      Thank you, King of Nathrangs!

  9. My computer: be as my hands and type what I dictate!
  10. He could take a shardblade. It would be relatively the same as a shardblade battle. They are both extremely heavily invested and will resist each other.
  11. Happy Birthday @Drake Marshall!! Keep on making those awesome waffles!!
  12. @SilvaThere is a WoB which states that one could spike attributes from a spren. This for instance: Questioner So, the fan page wanted to know. Would it be possible for Hemalurgy to steal a living Shardblade? That was the top voted question. Brandon Sanderson Ok, so you're bonded to a Shardblade. You get spiked, then they spike off the bond so that the Shardblade is bonded to someone else. Questioner I assume so... Brandon Sanderson But can they do it with a living Shardblade? You can definitely do it with a dead Shardblade because its just stealing the Connection. With a living Shardblade, yes you could do that 'though the spren could break the bind at will. Questioner So the spren would survive? That was the second-- the corollary-- Brandon Sanderson Ehhh. Would the spren survive? The spren would survive as long as the oaths were-- Questioner Intact? Brandon Sanderson --the person didn't break the oaths. But you could theoretically steal the bond, break the oaths, and kill the spren. If you wanted to. Its a very convoluted to kill a spren, they are easier to kill than that, but yes. You could do that. That is a viable but twisted route that you can do. You would end up with a dead spren and a Shardblade, so there is that. But there are easier ways to accomplish that... source or this: Mr. Suit Can spren - like Syl - be pierced by hemalurgic spike? Will it give some effect? Brandon Sanderson Yes. A spren can be pierced by Invested metal… Oversleep Could it be spiked? Brandon Sanderson Could a spike be used to give abilities to spren? That’s not going to work really well. Oversleep Could you steal from a spren? Brandon Sanderson Yes, you could steal the Investiture of a spren. Any Investiture can be used in a spike if you know what you’re doing. It’s actually not that hard to use one on a spren. Oversleep Because I thought you said Hemalurgy needs moving blood. Brandon Sanderson It needs, uh, yeah… there are places where spren have more physical form, more tangible form. Questioner Roshar? Brandon Sanderson No, no, no, not Roshar. Questioner The Cognitive Realm on Roshar? Brandon Sanderson Yeah, if you go to the Cognitive Realm on Roshar the spren act differently than they do. Oversleep So you could spike in the Cognitive Realm? Brandon Sanderson Yeah I’ll leave a RAFO with you on that. That’s your fifth one. So there are ways to get any Investiture into Hemalurgy if you know what you’re doing. But yeah this is not something that would be a common use for Hemalurgy. Let’s just say that. Oversleep We do not concern ourselves with common uses. Brandon Sanderson Yes, I know you don’t. But yeah Hemalurgy, when you’re spiking into somebody you… you’ll see when we get around to it. source
  13. That is problematic because it does consume even non invested things such as stone walls etc.. The phraseology of that WoB is he would try to eat them.
  14. Behold I am he who requires a fortune to see all!!
  15. Had to stay late in school on my hardest day because of a mandatory workshop on my birthday to boot!
  16. As I have taken the next step in my education and entered law school my presence on the shard will be reduced a great deal. I will try to be present when I can, but who knows what will happen? Should I be away for a long while I shall miss all of you who have made things interesting!!!

Good luck! Good to know that you won’t be gone forever!

  17. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] With the gemstones, we know that the hue seems to matter more than the rarity. Is that somehow tying in to the colors for Warbreaker, and how that stuff works? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Yes, that is tying in. Color will be a recurring theme, much as metal will be a recurring theme, as you see different magic systems work. In this case, the color has an affect on the spren and getting a spren trapped in it. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] So just the color itself? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Yeah the color is the important part. When I was researching Stormlight, I determined that color had to be the point. Because a lot of the gemstones I'm using are molecularly identical. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] So that was the best way to differentiate? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] So this was the best way to differentiate. But I had already had this as part of the cosmere, that color and the way people perceive color and things like, that were part of it. But getting ten different gemstones that were molecularly different proved to be very difficult and not worth it. If you look, so many of them are just basically the same gemstone with a few impurities. Their crystalline structure is the same. source
  18. @Archer If shalebark grows in a forest and no one sees it, how much does tallew cost in Azir? Which cosmere world is best suited for your temperament? Who is afraid of the big bad wolf? If you were fighting an army of super intelligent groundhogs which cosmere character would you want to have by your side? If you had to face down a pack of stick wielding sand creatures which cosmere character would you want by your side? If A squared plus B squared equals C squared then what do you get when you add the sixth of dusk squared plus 10 heralds squared? Gandalf or Saruman? Percy Jackson or Tien? If you could have the choice of owning a bottomless chest of gold which would subtract a year of your life for every ten pieces taken out would you do it? Do you feel the need for speed?
  19. Threnody and first of the sun
  20. It would seem so based on what we see in kaza's interlude as well as in the hidden grain room in Kholinar.
  21. @Inklingspren If shalebark grows in a forest and no one sees it, how much does tallew cost in Azir? If you could meet any historical figure who would it be? Who is your favorite comic book character? Dogs or Cats? Gandalf or Saruman? Digimon or Pokemon? Godzilla or King Kong? If not now then when? If you could taste colors which would you want to taste? If you had the option to live forever, but never accomplish something meaningful or live for 20 years, but make a massive impact which would you choose?
  22. Fantasy villain My name is Karandrak of the scarlet blade. My eyes inspire raw fear in the hearts and minds of my slaves. I glow with an energy that brings the princes of the realm to their knees. My powers allow me to reduce the strongest of fortresses to rubble. I like to torture my enemies and conquer kingdoms. I am tall and broad of body. I have no friends and I have no desire to have any. I am calculating and I have no heart. I can be charming when I need to be and hide my true intentions until it is too late. My peers underestimated me and I destroyed them all. Rivers of blood turn the sea's ruby. None can stand before me and I shall live forever.
  23. They came from ashyn in the roshar system. If you want a stand alone story Warbreaker is a good place to start if you want to jump in deep start with Mistborn.
  24. @tigmades how about one of these: Caller of Blades, Chaser of kings
  25. @urrutiap Mistborn Era's 1 and 2 are both really great reads!! The actual mechanics of the magic don't get too involved for the casual reader. It is a fascinating example of grounded magic. Have you read any of Brandon's other books?
