Reading The Wheel of Time Together [SPOILERS!]
ILuvHats replied to ILuvHats's topic in General Discussion
Hi everybody! I'm glad so many people are interested in this, because I wasn't honestly sure it would work out. But it did! Anyways it's time to get a schedule that everybody can agree on. I'll edit the top post once we agree on something. I'm going to make a quick list summarizing everybody who's said they're interested to get a good idea of where everybody's at in the series and who has already read it. I also went to tag people just to make sure you're still interested, and so that everyone can give me feedback on my "proposal" or whatever you want to call it, because I want a schedule that works for everybody. @Dr. Dapper, @whattheHoid, @Kcitsmood, and @Sorana have all read the series, or at least most of it, already. So I'm assuming you're cool with starting a reread wherever is most convenient for the new people, unless you decide to just discuss what you remember instead of rereading. If you want to start at book 1 to refresh your memory let me know, and we can take it into account since everybody has different reading speeds. @erbiL ohcnaG is on book 3, @Kidpen is on book 1, I'm on book 2, and @Snipexe didn't say yet. Also, @Just a Lifetime didn't explicitly say he wanted to join, but you still posted in this thread, so let me know if you DO want to participate. So here's how the deadlines will work. Obviously, falling behind is totally fine, but once the date arrives for each section, spoilers are allowed up to the specified point in the series. The first three books at least are each about 700 pages long, so I'm thinking its reasonable to divide each book into thirds and give a week to read each third. That's about 240 pages a week, and about 35 pages a day. So not too bad. I don't want to go any faster because that's my personal limit based on my schedule. If anybody wants to go slower, we can. I don't want to go so slow it takes over 2 years though . Also, I think Mondays are good days for the deadline since that gives the weekend for catching up on reading. Now, for how we're going to start this. There are two ways we can do it. We can start at book 1 and people who are already in the middle of the series (for the first time) can just wait until the people who just started catch up before they keep reading. But then some people, like @erbiL ohcnaG, might have to wait for 2 months before they can continue reading. Or, of course, they can read ahead, but where's the fun in that? I kind of want everybody who's reading WoT for the first time to be on the same book, that way its just more fun to discuss. The other option is that we allow a shorter slot of time, like a month, for everybody to read faster than they would following the deadlines and catch up to the same book. I'm thinking up to the beginning of book 3, or in the middle of it depending on how far @erbiL ohcnaG is through it. The actual length of time depends on how fast @Kidpen, and anybody who's rereading from the beginning for a refresh think they can read. So those are my ideas. Let me know which of the options you prefer, and if you have any different ideas, share them. -
Are you afraid of Sanderson been unable to finish Cosmere?

What we really need to do is convince Brandon to work out more. That should increase his chances. -
Reading The Wheel of Time Together [SPOILERS!]
ILuvHats replied to ILuvHats's topic in General Discussion
Don’t worry, I didn’t forget . I’ve got a pretty busy day today, so I won’t be able to post the update until tonight at maybe 10 pm US central. I have a few ideas for how to make this book discussion work, but I’ll want to get feedback. -
I think at some point in the past I knew that the shard censors swear words, but I basically completely forgot that until now. And now I’m curious to know what all the replacement words are, so I’m going to try out every obscenity I know. If the censorship misses any, I’ll edit my post. For anybody who happens to see this post before I finish editing: Forgive me. rust dumbThis post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules (edit 1: huh it didn’t change into chull) (edit #2 nvm) chull motherstormer storm ***** This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules (nuh uh) ***** (nope) **** (I guess it could be a chicken) son of a slontze This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules** (ok yeah this ones borderline) [I use really dirty language and should be ashamed of myself] (we all know what this one was) PS Please don’t give me a warning point.

Relevant WoB: I remembered all the WoBs saying you can use Breaths to surgebind, but I couldn’t recall any explicitly saying the opposite was also true. Obviously stormlight fulfills the weekly requirement for Returned, but that doesn’t mean you can Awaken with it. Turns out you’re more knowledgeable than me though, @king of nowhere .

Maybe the first one would work. I don’t know how much of the spike needs to be exposed to take effect. The problem with the second one though is that I think you’d need to use a jacket made of a metal both softer and lighter than aluminum to get the effect your looking for, right? Because you want the jacket to compress upon impact so it peels away from the core. If the metals softer but heavier than aluminum, like lead, the momentum of the bullet jacket will outweigh the compression upon impact, so it won’t separate from the core. And and a harder jacket, like steel, will result in the first method you mentioned. Maybe magnesium or a magnesium alloy would work? It’s melting point is lower than even aluminum though. Maybe it’s feasible.
-
Well, there have been discussions about how aluminum makes for poor bullets because the metal has a low melting point (causing potential warping in the chamber) and are too light weight to do as much damage. Now, there are aluminum slugs used today (though I’m not sure how feasible it’d be to make similar bullets for 1940s level firearms). But they tend to do less damage then lead bullets, and more importantly for this discussion, they almost always shatter upon contact. Instead of just compressing like lead bullets do, aluminum bullets often disentegrate when they hit a target. This means it’s almost impossible to hit a Hemalurgic bind point since it’s impossible to predict the placement of the shrapnel. There’s also the question of if the shrapnel will carry the Intent of the bullet, but I’m not knowledgeable enough about realmatics to answer that. And of course, alloying aluminum with another metal to avoid this property in a bullet makes it useless as an aluminum spike since it’s no longer pure aluminum. So, on top of needing a god level shooter like Wax to hit the bindpoint, you need to overcome problems like these. So I’m my opinion, I doubt we’ll ever see a single successful case of using hemalurgic aluminum bullets, let alone widespread use.

Yeah, you can totally join. We’ll work out the logistics later for getting everybody reading the same book at the same time. -
Reading The Wheel of Time Together [SPOILERS!]
ILuvHats replied to ILuvHats's topic in General Discussion
Awesome! I’m glad there’s people out there willing to give this a try! I’ll probably wait til Monday to see if anybody else wants to join, then we can try to arrange a schedule to get us all onto the same book, and put up some soft deadlines from there for how fast we want to read them. Then let the discussions begin! -
Reading The Wheel of Time Together [SPOILERS!]
ILuvHats replied to ILuvHats's topic in General Discussion
I mean you can if you want to. But you know everything that'll happen already. So it'd kinda be hard to theorize with you . -
Hi! Welcome to the Wheel of Time reading group. Basically, we'll just be going through the series together and discussing all that juiciness. Anyone can join at any time even if you've already read it all, and feel free to comment even if you don't want to participate in the readings. Just don't spoil anything ahead of what the group has read, because there are first-timers (like me). The readings will work in a pretty standard way. Once the date is reached for a section of a book, any spoilers up to that point are allowed. I know people live in different time zones, so don't start posting spoilers for last week's reading immediately after 12:00 am Sunday night, because there could be people in an earlier timezone who might inadvertently stumble across spoilers. And though I'm guessing any participants who are new to WoT will have already finished the weekly reading by that point, there's always the possibility that they've fallen behind. So, it's best not to take chances. I think if we just wait until a reasonable time on Monday morning, say 7:00 am, we should be fine. Here's the schedule for the next 9 weeks: Monday, January 21 - The Eye of the World, Prologue - Chap. 17 Monday, January 28 - The Eye of the World, Chap. 18-34 Monday, February 4 - The Eye of the World, Chap. 35-53 Monday, February 11 - The Great Hunt, Prologue - Chap. 13 Monday, February 18 - The Great Hunt, Chap. 14-31 Monday, February 25 - The Great Hunt, Chap. 32-50 Monday, March 4 - The Dragon Reborn, Prologue - Chap. 20 Monday, March 11 - The Dragon Reborn, Chap. 21-39 Monday, March 18 - The Dragon Reborn, Chap. 40-56 Good luck, and have fun!

I only noticed this because of @TequilaJack‘s post. But does it annoy anyone else that the text in OB was so misleading in light of this new WoB? I can see how the passage could be interpreted so that summoning a perpendicularly was not new to the Stormfather. He could have been surprised about Dalinar refilling spheres because it meant he’d sworn his oath when the Stormfather had been sure he’d turn to Odium. And in the next sentence he is talking about whatever he has never seen before instead of Dalinar’s new ability. But dang it Brandon! You could have made that passage so much clearer! When a character mentions he is surprised by something, and then in the next sentence mentions “this” is something he’s never seen before, readers assume “this” refers to whatever the character was talking about in the previous sentence! And don’t tell me this is our fault for jumping to conclusions. Brandon even admitted in the footnote of the above WoB that he was unintentionally misleading in previous questions about this topic.

I think it depends how similar Hoid’s healing capabilities are to Feruchemical gold. I’m not sure if it’s a quirk of Feruchemy or a universal result of healing for long periods of time, but Miles is incapable of feeling pain in AoL. I think it’s implied this occurred because of the sheer number of wounds he’s suffered over the years. Hoid has lived a lot longer than Miles, though he hasn’t participated in violent confrontations as often as Miles did. Personally, I think that as long as Hoid isn’t repressing his healing, he can’t feel pain, though maybe he doesn’t feel pain when he’s repressing it either. After all, I don’t remember a mention of Hoid being in pain when he got punched in the OB epilogue. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, though. Edit: Ninja’d by Nathrangking.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
ILuvHats replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
There’s always another loophole. Granted. You are filled with an insatiable desire to see the cosmere adapted to the big screen as an anime cooking show. I wish to be able to go back in time and change my bane, heh heh. -
You, sir, should write a book. I really love your story so far, and I identify with it a lot too (let’s just say I haven’t had the best luck with dating). And you get that 2nd person narrative to work, which is really impressive. It’s hard to draw readers in using unconventional narrative devices like that.

Hi! Welcome to the shard. Who's your favorite cosmere character?
-
I... did not realize this was a duplicate. So basically, I answered a question that had already been answered (sigh). Glad to know my efforts were helpful.
-
Jaddeth is definitely not a shard, or at least not a full one. Dominion and Devotion, the original shards on Sel, were splintered by Odium long ago. Then he stuffed their remains in the cognitive realm, which eventually merged together to form the Dor. Plus, I don’t think Brandon would want any Shards from other books to be closely involved with the Elantris series, especially since Elantris was his first book and was written far before he started including significant crossovers between he cosmere works. However, you’re right to think there’s something going on with Jaddeth. Almost certainly, the Skaze are involved. And it’s possible a Splinter of Dominion much larger than any of the Skaze could have survived Odiums assault intact or coalesced afterwards somehow, and has taken the name Jaddeth. We really can’t know until we start getting the Elantris sequels. But, I doubt Jaddeth is a full Shard.

Have an upvote just for incorporating a shardcast meme into a theory.

I wish I’d read Warbreaker before WoR. But I didn’t, so I missed out on the greatest crossover in the history of the cosmere
-
I’d think rabbits could also be found on the non-fainlife parts of Yolen, considering Scadrial was designed after Yolen.

This death rattle actually lends credence to this theory. It's always hard to tell how metaphorical death rattles are, but the reference to dying storms could be foreshadowing for the Stormfather's death. And since I brought up this quote, why not try to dissect it further? First of all, note that the word "storms" is plural. The Highstorm, despite its size, is always referred to as a single storm. So, perhaps both the Highstorm and the Everstorm are both coming to an end simultaneously in this event. "Silence" could either refer to death, or mourning/shock/fear. So one interpretation is that the silence above is the Stormfather's death, and the silence below is the shock of humanity and Singers alike when they realize the storms have ended. Even though the Stormfather is usually seen as part of the storm, I think silence above could still refer to him since he could also be metaphorically viewed as riding atop the storms. Another interpretation, which is absolutely crazy, is that the silence above is Rayse's death and the silence below is Cultivation's vessel's death. Odium, obviously, is bound on Braize, in the sky, so he is figuratively above the storms. Cultivation, meanwhile, is associated with nature and life on the surface of the planet, so she would be below them. And to address Calderis' point about repercussions of the Stormfather's death, I don't think if the storms died they would be permanently gone. Either somebody would have ascended as Honor and would be able to reinstate the Highstorms, or some other method would be employed to keep all life on Roshar from literally dying out. So I guess in that way, my opinion differs from the OP's theory.

Silverlight!!

Eh, I prefer the esoteric explanation (probably just because I’m studying materials science ). Besides, the question itself comes from a concept that’s not commonly known, so an equally esoteric answer is kinda appropriate.
