  1. Just to be clear, I wasn’t saying Moelach was a silent gatherer, I was saying he, as a unmade, is serving Odium’s purposes, and that the speaker wasn’t even addressing the silent gatherers.
  2. I saw your post, and I agree the other two are dubious death rattles. I don’t know though. The 3rd one just seems off to me, like it would feel weird if the person were talking to a member of the diagram. I get what your saying, and the simpler answer, that the persons talking to the silent gatherer, is probably correct. The exact phrasing just feels off to me, for the reasons I already mentioned.
  3. Am I the only one who doesn't think the speaker is talking to the Silent Gatherers in this death rattle? Ostensibly, they're killing people to collect death rattles for the greater good. It's easy to see why someone would find their methods despicable, but why would anybody hate the Diagram for the reasons behind their actions? I've always thought the speaker was actually addressing Moelach, or rather Odium/the force driving it since Moelach is itself mindless. It's a pretty common theory that Moelach is actually an information gatherer for Odium, and uses the spark of death to gain glimpses into the future. So it makes since that the speaker might have gained insight into the machinations behind Moelach, and is refusing to share information which could aid the enemy.
  4. No worries. Thanks.
  5. I don't doubt it will be answered. We've known for a long time that Odium sometimes has some sort of an edge in shardic combat. After all, he was able to splinter Dominion and Devotion. Here are some relevant WoBs. So Autonomy may have helped splinter them, but we don't know to what extent. Do note that Hoid attributes Skai and Aona's deaths to Odium alone though in his letter to Frost, so at the very least Bavadin's influence on the event was subtle enough that either a) Hoid didn't think it worth mentioning her contributions or b.) any impact she had was small enough that it isn't common knowledge. I'm not sure whether this means Odium thought he had an advantage facing Devotion and Dominion, or Honor and Cultivation. You can interpret it how you want. My point is, Brandon has definitely thought this out, and it will eventually be addressed directly. Edit: Oops. I meant to include this WoB too, even though it’s only semi relevant .
  6. I can’t say I’m too knowledgeable about Buddhism, since the extent of my experience is 2 world religion classes. But when I did a quick google search (I know, I’m such a scholar), I saw references to the 48 vows of the Amida Buddha. Out of curiosity, do you think the 10 orders are based on 10 of these 48, or a separate list of only 10 vows? If they are from this list of 48, can you share which ones you think correlate to which order of knights radiant? I’m just curious.
  7. Color me intrigued. Do you have more written yet, or did you just start writing this story?
  8. You know who has had a lot of good quotes over the decades? Joker. And I'm feeling in a Joker kind of mood. Batman (1989) "As my plastic surgeon always says; if you gotta go, go with a smile." "Do I look like I'm joking?" "Tell me something, my friend, have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?" "If you could see inside, I'm really crying." "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" "This town needs an enema." The Dark Knight (2008) "I believe whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you stranger." "You wanna know how I got these scars?" "The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules." "You know, madness is like gravity... all it takes is a little push." "Why so serious?" "Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just, do things." "Very poor choice of words!" Joker (2019) Mild spoilers; some of the quotes aren't from the trailer.
  9. So, I'm definitely a patreon supporter for the 17th shard. I checked my account to be sure. But its been about 2 months, and I haven't gotten a tag yet. Maybe I accidentally miss-wrote my shard username after choosing to become a patron? Idk. This doesn't bother me too much, I'm just wondering what's going on.
  10. I don't think you need to ensure no singer is willing to give up there bodies to the Fused - just limit the supply of bodies the Fused have access to. I think its entirely plausible to reach a point where only a few hundred Fused can be fielded at a time because a.) Most of the singers no longer side with Odium and b.) Nobody wants to die! If it were actually common knowledge that inviting a Fused into your body meant suicide, and they didn't have Fused and voidspren all about them driving them to give up their bodies, I doubt many singers would willingly host a Fused. A few hundred Fused can do almost nothing, not if Roshar is united, the Orders are refounded, and they have no singer infantry to help them. At this point, Odium would be all but defeated. I don't see it reaching this point though, since there will likely be a much more direct confrontation with Odium himself at some point.
  11. @PrinceGenocide What your asking about sounds more like lerasium than atium. We've never seen it in action, but according to the hemalurgic table, lerasium "steals all abilities." So maybe it can do what you want to do. Though its early to make any assumptions about how it works.
  12. I've read them before, but its been a while. Might be time for a refresher.
  13. There's steel with greater than 5% carbon content?! Wow, I had no idea. That alloy's gotta be brittle. Good idea. I'll add some more details to my post.
  14. This is a world and magic system I’ve been tossing around for a while, and probably the best one I’ve built yet. It’s by no means complete, but I’ve solidified enough of it that it warrants posting, especially because there’s a lot of stuff I’d like advice on. There’ll be a lot of world building, mostly to provide context for the magic users, but the magic is the main focus. Anyways, hope you like it. Origin/Historical Background of Magic Rules of the Magic System Aaaaannndd, considering how long this post has gotten, there is no way I'm going to talk about the current state of the world and how magic falls into it. I have enough to say to equal everything I've already posted. I'll probably post a part 2 eventually to cover all of that. Instead, here's some miscellaneous information and clarifications that I'm too lazy to incorporate into the rest of the essay (because that's what it's become; an essay ). Miscellaneous Information
  15. I honestly would have put Dark One if we knew it had been greenlit, but since we don't know for sure if it'll get made, I had to go with Wheel of Time.
  16. I’ve tried them, but they’re not really my thing. I find it hard to focus when I’m not visually engaged

  18. *reminded that I have this book sitting on my shelf, and probably won’t get to it until after the show since I’m in the middle of WoT right now.
  19. Thanks to the Recreance, almost all spren believe that knights radiant will inevitably break their oaths, so bonding is a death sentence. I’m sure that even knowing a desolation was coming and knowing they need to prepare, they tried to put off bonding to the last second. Others might have even refused to believe a desolation was stirring, just because they didn’t want to admit that it was necessary to bond again. You also have to remember that you can’t really compare different types of spren. Some of them, like the Cryptics, have long been committed to forming Nahel bonds once again. They whole-heartedly believe it will end in the Recreance once more, but as Pattern shows, they don’t seem particularly concerned with dying. The society of Cultivation spren also seem to have decided to begin bonding again. Other types of spren are much more resistant to bonding, though. Honor spren were, though that’s starting to change now that they see how successful Syl has been and now that the Stormfather himself has bonded. Based off of Timbre, lightspren have no desire to bond humans again, and while Spark did, he also hates humans in general for the Recreance. Ivory too was a deviant, and wasn’t supported by the other Inkspren in bonding Jasnah. Really, the only spren that appear to have no reservations about bonding are the Highspren since the Skybreakers didn’t follow through with the Recreance. Generally, considering what the spren think of the Recreance, it seems reasonable that they would be bonding so little so late despite a coming desolation.
  20. Maybe it was someone’s name. Imagine having Crem as a last name and then reading SA.
  21. "This will be your boon. I will not make of you the man you can become. I will not give you the aptitude, or the strength, nor will I take from you your compulsions. But I will give you . . . a pruning. A careful excision to let you grow. The cost will be high. In doing this, I provide for him a weapon. Dangerous, very dangerous. Yet, all things must be cultivated. What I take from you will grow back eventually. This is part of the cost. It will do me well to have a part of you, even if you ultimately become his. You were always bound to come to me. I control all things that can be grown, nurtured. That includes the thorns." -Cultivation
  22. The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks The Powder Mage Trilogy by Brian McClellan There are a lot of similarities between these two authors and Brandon, so if you’re looking for works that feel similar to the cosmere, I highly suggest these 2 authors, especially Brent Weeks. Edit: In fact, McClellan was one of Brandon’s students at BYU for a while. If that doesn’t point towards a similar taste in writing, I don’t know what does
  23. Personally, I’m not too bothered by the #stormmoash trend. To be quite honest, when I first started seeing it, I was just glad that something, anything, was starting to replace “I am a stick” as the go-to meme. But yeah, I have to say I enjoy Moash as a character, and while I get the whole trend bashing on him, I don’t partake in it. His story in OB was a tragedy, with a moment of being deliciously hatable after killing Elhokar. Especially because I think Elhokar was on his way to becoming one of my favorite characters after pulling off the most ridiculous redemption arc ever. But even still, Moash’s actions were perfectly understandable considering his past! That’s proof of how well-crafted a character Moash is, and I hope he’ll keep getting the narrative attention he needs. Unlike Amaram .
  24. The story of my life.
