  1. He did have a character before he took up the Shard, though...
  2. I don't think that BS's personal religious beliefs have or will influence his magic systems. </allreligiousdiscussioninthisthread>
  3. Or rather: which is cause, which is effect? I do believe that the Shard Odium represents pure force of Hate. The other meaning might be clever commentary by BS on Rayse's nature, though.
  4. I agree. Coming from a long line of distinguished chain-yankers, I recognize the elements of a solid yank in that there quote. But I also believe that Brandon might do some interesting things with Kelsier's remains, if not necessarily his character...
  5. I'm betting that, at some point, somebody ends up giving cats allomancy and spiking their food with metals... Cat Inquisitors are totally possible. That's awesome.
  6. I don't see a problem here. Hemalurgy literally takes some sDNA of an Allomancer or a Feruchemist and staples it on to another person. That is directly involved with genetics. The same principle applies to human attribute spikes. Without the genetic information in a person's body, Hemalurgy is useless. You can't use Hemalurgy on rock... But can you use it on animals? Hmmm....
  7. It also appears like Sazed wrote about a lot of tech that Scadrians would end up with in his Book of Founding, like electricity and aeroplanes. After all, it's a lot easier to develop a technology when you know that what you're trying to do is possible.
  8. It was 300 years between HoA and AoL Considering they started out after HoA with no infrastructure and, at best, an early 1400's society and AoL is equivalent to the pre WWI era, I'd say that Sazed is able to accelerate development just as effectively as TLR suppressed it.
  9. Mostly the reason I thought of this was because Mystery-Letter-Maybe-Hoid-Person described Ati as "kind and generous man". I like to think that he discovered the influence that his shard had upon him and spent his last amount of time being able to act against its intent setting up things so One-Track-Mind Ruin would act in the ultimate best interests of all. I don't know. I like the idea of setting up a course of action for a predictable enemy so you can make them do what you want, and the idea of doing it to yourself just takes it up 11.
  10. Word of God describes the second trilogy as "modern, with cell phones, etc." (that's a paraphrase obviously). So at minimum we're looking at mid 90's. Now, I don't think those gigantic late 80's cell phones count. Nor do car phones. I'm thinking we'll end up in the late naughts or near future. Of course, by the time these books get written our "near future" might be "present" or "recent past".
  11. Has anyone considered the possibility that Ati was fully aware of what he was doing, and decided to act in a certain way that, while not being contrary to his nature, (he Ruins the crap out of a bunch of stuff) still results in the best outcome for what are, after all, his creations? I mean, he worked together with Preservation before... </outtaleftfield>
  12. Sazed is still very much a person- maybe he just helps when he feels like it will make thing turn out for the best, or when he feels like it.
  13. I believe that's an interview confirmation, or not confirmed... But then again, I haven't read the book for almost 10 months now.
  14. What, precisely, does the term Realmatic mean?
  15. Or maybe Odium is just a douchebag. Who knows?
  16. Like the word "odious". It can also mean having to bear the hatred others feel for you. Just food for thought.
  17. I think that a Lurcher or Coinshot's leaping and flying around would not exactly be the best idea for a pregnant woman...
  18. This music video turns the weird level up a notch about every thirty seconds. It's also the first Google result for "laser cancer jesus".
  19. Passionless? Maybe. Loveless? No. I think this idea comes from the misconception that love is the romance-section bodice-ripping 50 Shades of Grey kind of thing, whereas as Sanderson is approaching from a very different angle with Vin and Elend. Every writer (well, almost every writer) has a different view of what love is. If you read Pride and Prejudice and the Anne of Green Gables series, you'll find that Austen and Montgomery both treat the issue of love in an extremely different manner? Does this mean that one of them has the right of it, and that only one can be a good love story? No. Anyway, the supposed "awkwardness" that the two displayed is very much intentional from where I'm standing. Okay, I lied. I'm actually sitting. But that's irrelevant.
  20. Well if he couldn't see it, it would be difficult to destroy it, right? I admit I had forgotten about that particular part. I take it back- if Ruin could directly affect what was stored in a metalmind, Sazed should be able to store attributes, or a process amounting to roughly the same thing.
  21. As I understand it, Ruin and Preservation were unable to directly affect metals themselves. If Ruin can't change the writing in a metal plate, why should he be able to store attributes in it?
  22. My first impulse was to say "no", in the specific case of Nightblood or other sentient Awakened objects. After all, they are powered directly by Endowment. However, it was possible for Sazed to take on two Shards, so we know that it is possible for Shardic aspects to intermingle, so to speak. I'm going to guess "no", simply because Nightblood's spiritual aspect is probably not prepared to hold a Shard.
  23. The reason there are no time travelers is that, in the distant future, someone discovered it, but it got so confusing the world agreed to just kill all time travelers so that things would be simple again.
  24. I've heard rumors that the "modern" Mistborn involves a special Allomantic/Feruchemical special operations team. What better target for them to take down than some terrorist/political entity with the capability to destroy, if not the entire universe, at least a sizeable chunk of it? I think that a universe destroying bomb is a bit too powerful to be used as an effective plot device, though. I imagine it more on the "high yield nuclear weapons" scale. Imagine how strategically valuable the Pits of Hathsin become when Atium weapons are discovered.
