  1. My hatred of Stick is just a joke in response to everyone else's joke-love of him I actually loved him when I first read the book, but I like to be contrary
  2. I love it! Gordon is my favorite chef inn the world (going to his flagship restaurant is my favorite culinary experience) because of his balance with flavors. His home cooking book is one you use if you want to follow recipes exactly but guarantee you'll have something perfectly balanced. A fair bit of French influence but without being regional French
  3. Buuut if you added tapping investiture I wonder if it would work. Or if you had what the IRE have. Because we know that gaining Connection to the area of Sel could give you access to it. Then the limitation of distance is because you're drawing on external investiture that is regionalized. If you carry investiture with you, and Connection, maybe it could work. The questions are whether you can store connection to the right place and whether you need some kind of hack to make stored investiture power a soul stamp. We don't know enough about those two feruchemical powers. I think a hack would be necessary.
  4. An American that knows Python. Your me-ness knows no bounds. The Four Yorkshiremen is still one of the most wonderful bits of comedy ever produced.
  5. Oh I'm not disputing there are none now. That's because the bllodlines mixed with other people and feruchemy breaks down more easily What I'm saying is that full feruchemists survived the catacendre but there weren't enough to only interbreed, they had to breed with non-feruchemists diluting the line so that within a generation or two none were left. I feel like it's unlikely so many ferrings would have manifested without feruchemists in the first place. I also feel it's highly unlikely the inquisitors would have killed every last one. But that's based on the known knowns. Could be unknown knowns and unknown unknowns...
  6. Coppermind has it as Elantrian for trickster, joker, literally Wit Killer. I picture it as someone who makes jokes so funny that anyone who hears them dies of laughter. Like the Monty Python sketch.
  7. Accidentally posted that WoB and can't move it. This is an interesting post. Broken one is a strange way to refer to Odium, and it seems strange to refer to three ruling (though maybe each was on a different Roshar system planet). Ambition is broken but I can't see how he/she reigns. A couple of WoBs on that ands the Purelake. I'm pretty sure the Purelake fish are fish bonded with sentient spren.
  8. Sadly, when I moved to Prague I had to get rid of my collection, now I only use Kindle so all my books are e. My main collections are Sanderson, Hobbs, McClellan and Card. Weeks of course, and Brett. The main ones I used to have but got rid of were the entire 30 book arc from Feist, Song of Ice and Fire and Tolkien (every published Tolkien). Here are some screenshots of my Amazon collection now Of course there are many books I will need to own again one day. And the tin-eyes amongst you will notice I am missing some Brandon, which is outrageous. That will be remedied in due course. One that's missing, that I can't wait for, is the Name of the Wind 10th anniversary edition, which will arrive in a few months
  9. I should say, as the OP, that I'm not satisfied that Heralds didn't have a way to draw in Stormlight, just like Vasher did. And they certainly would have had the knowledge to use gems and such to see them through the highstorms. My theory, at least the specific idea that only Returned amongst Cognitive Shadows need constant investiture, depends on it. But I haven't satisfied myself yet that Heralds are any different. Even if they are, they haven't been described as exactly Cognitive Shadows, Brandon has described them as 'technically a variety of Cognitive Shadow'. We have Kelsier of course but we've still only seen him in the Cognitive Realm where investiture requirements may be different (ie the idea that it is the physical body and the connection to it that needs maintaining). Kelsier did become one because the amount of investiture he took in 'expanded his soul' to the point it no longer felt the call of the Beyond. That clearly indicates that the Cognitive Aspect itself does not need a constant flow of investiture. Once it's expanded, the pull of the Beyond stops. So the question remains, is it the physical body that causes that need.
  10. Here's an excellent recent WoB on the differences between elsecalling and soulcasting, astral protection and how this stuff manifests in the Cognitive Realm. With elsecalling you're literally transforming in an out of investiture. With soulcasting you're creating a little soul bubble in the Cognitive Realm (a bubble that interestingly makes you vulnerable). I'm pretty confident elsecalling is point to point, they don't need to juno into the Cognitive Realm and walk to where they're going. I think Jasnah just teleported entirely into the Cognitive Realm to avoid death, as a stopgap until she could recover and get what she needed.
  11. I always assumed he would have as few spikes as possible to avoid Shardic interference, and that he would just use them for an anchor to the physical world and a couple of useful compounding powers. And that he had the SoSco's make the Bands. That said he may be well past a threshold for spiritual interference anyway and is gathering as many powers as he can. So I still think he probably wasn't a full feruchemist when the Bands were made and coopted the SoSco's. But I wouldn't be as surprised if he's one now. One thing, why do we think full feruchemists didn't survive the catacendre? They still exist in era 2. How would you get a full feruchwmist born from diluted bloodlines? Or did i miss something? We have this WoB and a few like it I'll try find something more specific Edit - i thought there was an AoL annotation but doesn't look like it. But if that idea is based off Sazed saying he was the last Keeper, I think that just refers to a feruchemist specialising in coppermind knowledge and teaching
  12. Oh @Calderis I'm so so sorry mate. I'd be utterly devastated to lose my Kitty, and to feel it's your fault... The same thing happened with my sister's cat, who has clear neurological problems as a kitten one day but they flushed her out on time. Same thing. Rusting ibuprofen. And it doesn't help but try to separate consequence from blame. Even if you dropped a pill, it can happen to anyone, you didn't know the consequences and I hope you can find the strength to not blame yourself. My heart is with you and your family.
  13. Hey you still thought of looking there I checked theoryland, reddit, my database of 2017 WoBs, all my usual sources. I didn't stormin' think of Coppermind Sometimes I can't see the copper for the WoBs

  15. Oh wow, nice find @Cowmanthethird! Excuse me while I humbly take back any statements that I can find any WoB. @The Sovereign, the photo of your signed book on that page is no longer available, any chance you could repost? Great WoB btw, can't believe I'd never seen it.
  16. I must admit I doubt it'll happen, if Odium escaped at the end of book 5, who the braize would be the bad guy. I think the back 5, or the end, could be set on braize. But it wouldn't make sense for Odium to leave. But, it doesn't bake sense to me that Autonomy will be a big bad, maybe very bad, but subtly. Maybe it's another Shard altogether.
  17. Utterly speculative but I like the idea that it is Odium, free, and possibly with a new Vessel, that's doing the warring, and that Autonomy is doing a separate (though poooossibly) coordinated effort involving Bleeder's metal. Foreign god metals and new 'gods' is Autonomy's style. The red haze sounds too overt for Autonomy, that feels more Odium. We're told that you could say Autonomy helped Odium splinter d&d.i suspect any 'help' was similar - Autonomy wanting to undermine other Shards and that success weakening them enough to enable Odium to splinter them. That said that happened in human pre-history so it would have to be a different undermining to what she appears to be doing now. Huh. I ramble.
  18. I loooove Mat. One of my favorite fictional characters.
  19. From the Boskone signing
  20. When, at work, you keep reloading hoping to see Oversleep's Breath curve.
  21. Hm I didn't realize people thought it had been confirmed. But then i am obsessed with everything Nalthis and everything Shardic, so Endowment WoBs are one of my true loves. If it is a common misconception I'll throw it in the Unmaking the Canon thread. Unless some bright spark comes up with one I haven't seen Edit - I actually forgot I did a theory on the mechanics of Breath and Divine Breath a while back which deals with some of this stuff. Not the principle in discussion here, but it relates somewhat, if anyone is interested.
  22. I need to actually comment on all these posts on my own thread, but meanwhile And it was little Wilson, so I'd say there's no chance at all that it's wrong. I should add that I dont' believe we have confirmation that Endowment's vessel is Edgli. It's a good assumption but I've never seen that confirmed. Edit - as to the rest of it, my comments below Thanks for the input all. On Elantrians, we know they are not Cognitive Shadows as they never ‘died’. I did a post on this a while back, I believe the mechanics are that they are normal magic users, but infused with investiture to the point of effectively coming savants (many caveats on that due to the rubbery definition of savant). As Calderis said, I think the appropriate analogy is to someone with the fifth heightening who is not a Returned (ie susebron rather than vasher). I think you and Maelstrom have it right, that basically when Elantrians use aons they are not actually channeling the investiture through their bodies in the way an allomancer does when burning metal. The super boost caused by the Elantris aon (when functioning) is designed to enhance their ability to pull more of the Dor in at once, but it seems like the kinetic investiture is not actually running through them. Either way though, as they’re not cognitive shadows, the point is somewhat moot. On the issue of why one Breath a week (technically it’s the eighth day they die) that’s exactly part of why I think this is a very deliberate choice by Endowment. If they needed investiture constantly, in small trickles, the first Returned would have died immediately. It needed to be a week to give them time to convince others to give Breath. The number of days could be a Nalthis number thing, but I think it’s more just a good balance of not too short and not too long, as hwiles said, it’s a motivating factor to give away the Breath eventually. In the end I’m pretty confident that the design of all of this is about creating an ecosystem of ‘giving’ on Nalthis. The main question I haven’t satisfied myself with is whether that’s the only reason why Returned need regular investiture, or whether all Cognitive Shadows do and Endowment’s Intent is simply what defines the specifics.
  23. unfortunately for you my friend, I know the music that moves you. Ahem. MY SIN BE HIDDEN! Now, attack the Stick for me.
  24. I think the extra reference is Rock saying the god is unable to hurt anyone
