I'm not gonna lie, I kind of disagree with you about the start of Mistborn. I felt immediately pulled into this fantastical world, and I wanted to learn about every little secret it had to offer me. I especially enjoyed the complexity of the Metallic Arts (mainly Allomancy-Feruchemy and Hemalurgy were just added bonuses), and I loved the fight scenes, even as sparse as they were. I loved how I could never really predict anything that would happen, besides for some minor exceptions. And I loved all the little hints to a bigger story going on, and I loved trying to figure out who was writing the little blurbs at the beginnings of each chapter. I absolutely loved the first Mistborn trilogy. However, I read Elantris afterwards and, while I eventually came to love the book by about the middle, the beginning was quite boring, and the magic system didn't interest me (mainly because it's still pretty mysterious by that point). I feel like the complaints you made about Mistborn apply more to Elantris, though it does definitely get better. I don't think it's as good as Mistborn, but it's still really good. And I just finished The Alloy of Law today. I loved it, especially the whole Twinborn thing (I loved the mixing of Allomancy and Feruchemy). Twinborns got me thinking; what if someone was both a full Allomancer and a full Feruchemist? That'd be freaking awesome. Of course, we'd probably end up with another person like The Lord Ruler, but whatever. Anyway, I don't think I enjoyed this book as much as the originals, but it was still absolutely amazing. Anyway, to sum it up, I don't think you'd like Elantris all that much if you found Mistborn to be really boring at the start, but it does get a lot better throughout the story.

Hello there, welcome to the Shard! Have an upvote and a cookie! If you could be any type of Twinborn, what would your Allomantic and Feruchemical powers be?

I'm in the middle of reading The Alloy of Law. It's so good! I know I'm gonna finish it today, so I should've waited until I had books two and three before I started this one, but oh well.

I just finished The Bluecoats' 2011 show, Brave New World. Now I'm listening to T/LT, their 2014 show. It's probably my favorite DCI show of all time. Of course, I'm still fairly new to DCI, and there's lots of really good (so I've heard) old shows I haven't been able to find on YouTube.

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!

I've been kind of inactive lately, but that's because there's been the incoming freshmen (8th graders) band camp this past week. I'm trying out for section leader, and all the leader candidates go to the camp to help teach the incoming freshmen, motivate them, and introduce them to the section and what it's like to be in band. I've had long nights the past few days, and today was the longest because the leader candidates had a marching evaluation today as part of the audition. It went pretty well for me, but there's 9 of us clarinets trying out, and only 4/5 spots (we had 5 this past year, but I've heard they might go back to 4). I'm absolutely excited and terrified. Tomorrow, during all the band classes, we're gonna be using a google form to choose we what to be section leaders (by rating them from "I want them the most" to "I want them the least" and talking about what we like, don't like, etc.). I'm really nervous. -
Oh okay. That's why I was confused. That makes so much more sense. Thanks for the help!

Yes, that helped a lot. I have another minor question that I just thought of. So, were Ruin and Preservation shards that had been shattered (is that the right term) before in a previous time? Or were they two separate shards that were used to make one new shard? If so, wouldn't that bring the total number of shards down to 15? Or, if it were the first way, would there actually have been 17 shards at a point in time, but the creation of Harmony returned it back to 16? Also, I know that Odium shattered the shard from Sel to make Dominion and Devotion. Do we know what they were before? Also, depending on which of the numbers used from my first question, wouldn't there either be 16 or 18 shards?

DISCLAIMER: I have only read the first Mistborn trilogy, Elantris, The Emperor's Soul, and I have started Warbreaker. Try to not spoiler any other books for me (though I have done this a little for myself by being on this site) Okay, so I'm mainly asking this question because I have cool ideas for books I want to write, and Brandon Sanderson seems to either 1) come up with cool ideas before I can, and I come up with them independently just to find out he's already done them or 2) influence my ideas, without me realizing right away, only to realize later that I have almost plagiarized his works. What I want know is what exactly Adonalsium is. Is Adonalsium a being, or more of a force? From what I've heard, and what I've seen of the shards (including what I've heard of other shards like Odium), it sounds like Adonalsium was a being, and it got shattered, almost kinda making new beings. Am I close? Also, do we know if Adonalsium was always Adonalsium? If someone can take one of its shards and become a vessel, is that what happened to begin with for Adonalsium? Did someone find whatever you would call what would be like a shard for Adonalsium, and become its vessel? Also, would it be possible for someone to find all sixteen shards and take them in all at once? Also, is there a 17th Shard in the Cosmere? Or was that just a cool name that the site was given? Sorry if these questions have been asked and answered, I didn't do any digging in fear of spoilers.

@Darkness Ascendant Oh whoops, I'm so used to assigning genders to things. In my head, I knew they were a they. It just felt like Ïyé was a guy to me. Azu feels like a guy, Ora feels like a guy, but I could imagine a girl, Emu feels very feminine, Iko honestly could be either, so could Üsi, and Uno definitely feels masculine. Of course, that's all just me. I know they're all not gender-specific, but those are the genders I feel humans would be most likely to associate with this guardians, as humans (especially during early times) are prone to sticking to gender binary systems. You could actually work with that, I guess. Maybe ask several people what they think the guardians' genders are, and base part of the humans' belief around this misguided ideas of genders applied to the guardians. If that makes sense. Honestly, this is such a cool mythology universe you're setting up. I love it.

Wait, what? Are you saying that your dad got mad at you for talking your friend out of suicide? Even if you shouldn't have been talking to them in the first place because you were grounded or something, that's freaking messed up. -
If you could be any misting, which would you be? Of course, I'm talking Era 1, because I still haven't started Era 2, but you can do one from just Era 1, and one from Era 2, if you want.

Ïyé was one of the guardians. He was the one who lived underground with the spiders and could predict the future and stuff.

What is your favorite Sanderson book?
-
Man. I haven't commented on this yet, but I think that was your best part of the myth building yet. This world seems incredibly interesting. I love it. I just want to know, what exactly would the plotline be for this series of yours?
-
Oh...sorry, I'll get to that. My bad.
-
I posted this elsewhere, but I wanted to talk about it here too. Overall...I don't know if I liked Mistborn or Elantris better. Either way, they were both amazing.

The Official Thread of Relationships

Well, first of all, I'm confused. Is his mom a teacher at the school, or did she do a teacher at the school? I'm inclined to believe it's the former, but there's a very big distinction. Anyway, I honestly can't tell what you should do, based on just what you said in the post. Could you explain the situation more? A guy giving a girl a cupcake doesn't necessarily means he likes her (unless she's the only girl he gave a cupcake to), and you haven't really told us much. -

I was gonna upvote you for your Rogue One joke, and claim I was the only one who saw it. But then @Captains Domon saw the joke, and made their own joke. Either way, welcome to the Shard. I recommended a fudge brownie. -

I just came back from watching Gifted. It was sooooooo good. I almost cried a couple times, and ugh, everything was just so good about this movie. The camera was a bit shaky sometimes, but it helped with the almost informal-ish feel of the movie. I loved this movie so much.
