  1. Okay, that does make more sense. Unless Sanderson has been misleading us by just saying Connection, I'm inclined to believe that it might be possible to do a similar form of the Connection as in Forgery. I'm not sure how you'd do it, but it'd be cool if you could. Also, thankfully that wasn't really that big of a spoiler for me, as I haven't read Stormlight yet. I mainly just skimme over it, because I had no idea what you meant in that first paragraph.
  2. Is it just me, or do these two magics (or parts of the magic systems) seem very similar? Albeit, Forgery is more about changing objects, but still. It seem so to me like Duralumin Feruchemy could be possibly used to do a similar thing yourself as with Forgery. Or maybe Aluminum would be better (unless I misunderstand Indentity). This was just a random question that's been bothering me.
  3. This is such a cool story! It's always kind of inspiring to hear stuff like this. Anyway, welcome to the Shard, have an upvote, and here's a cookie!
  4. First of all, welcome to the Shard! Have an upvote and a cookie! (Trust me, it's definitely spiked delicious) Also, I'm really surprised that you didn't like Mistborn as much. Mistborn is definitely my favorite of what I've read so far (both Mistborns and the Mistborn short stories (including Secret History), Elantris and its short stories, White Sand, and I've started Warbreaker). Of course, that doesn't include Stormlight yet, mainly because I've just been too busy lately to read it, and honestly those books look freaking scary to read. 1000+ pages will be the biggest books I've ever read, once I read them. Anyway, I absolutely loved Mistborn. It was my introduction to the Cosmere (not to Brandon though; I'd already read The Reckoners and Rithmatist), and I loved how everything fit together at the end. Plus, I loved the idea of the magic system and just how complex and amazing it is. I didn't like Well of Ascension as much as the other two books, but it definitely got better near the end. And I love the Wax and Wayne books, especially the tremendous character growth and the awesomeness way that Twinborns work. Overall, I think Mistborn is probably my favorite book of all time, from any author.
  5. Just finished The Bands of Mourning. Damnation...that was something. I'm tired, and my brain is fried. Goodnight.
  6. Dang, those are a lot of coincidences. Of course, I think that's where the similarities between our ideas end. Of course, Brandon totally stole my idea for several different worlds being connected. /sarcasm
  7. That's actually pretty cool. It's crazy how two people can come up without crazily similar ideas independently of each other. Kind of like how I came up with the idea of doing a technologically advanced fantasy world before I'd ever heard about Brandon Sanderson.
  8. I think what I'm gonna do is a combination of a little of everything. They can only control fires that already exist, but they can light things on fire, as long as they're already flammable. The less flammable something is, the harder it is to set it on fire. And when they want to create fire in thin air, they use some sort of flint and steel thing, like you said.
  9. That would work...but I really do love the idea of someone creating a fireball in their hands and throwing it at someone. I don't wanna be too handwavy with the magic, but the ability to use fire, not heat, has some important plot aspects. And while I like where you're going with drawing the heat away from someone to freeze them, that's not how the magic works. If I went with heat manipulation, you'd be able to draw heat into a location, but you couldn't draw it away. Another example of this is with the three Water powers-Water, Ice, and Vapor. Water can control water in its liquid state, and can turn ice or vapor into liquid water, but not the other way around. Ice can control water in its solid state, and can only turn water into ice, not vapor into ice. Vapor can only control water in its gaseous state, and can turn water into vapor, but not ice into vapor. What I'm thinking is what Fire does is causes the air itself to burn, which would create the fireball. Not too handwavy, I don't think, but probably not perfectly scientifically possible.
  10. So, a problem I've been facing with a magic system im making based around controlling the elements is that I want these elemental powers to only be able to control their elements, not create them. The main problem about that is that I can't seem to figure out how Fire would work if it cannot create fire, simply manipulate it. Any help guys?
  11. True...but if he never wrote the original letter, then he never writes the one that he tells himself to write. As much as I like reading about time travel, logically explaining it doesn't work, in my opinion. No matter how you do it, if you go back in time and change something, you never would've had a reason to go back to begin with, so you never changed it.
  12. Oh my gosh, I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It was AWESOME! Without spoilering, I'm gonna say that I think it was way better than the original in almost every way, and I think this was the first Marvel movie where I almost cried. My only complaint is that I felt like most of the main characters kind of had some plot armor, but oh well.
  13. Ah, but you see. If he does actually do what the letter tells him too, he never would've wrote the letter in the first place, because he wouldn't have needed to.
  14. Dang...this sounds freaking awesome. I absolutely love this idea. I'd love to know more about how Artifice works, what all can exactly be done, what it's limitations are, etc. Also, I'm not quite sure what a name for the living-constructs could be. I have a similar idea, so I don't want to give you any ideas that I might end up liking, sorry. But I'd totally be willing to help you with anything else! I REALLY love this idea.
  15. Okay, that makes more sense. I understand better now. I think I was just being defensive of Mistborn, because it's my favorite book by Brandon (so far-though The Reckoners is really good too).
  16. Hello @Lord Maelstrom! Have an upvote and a cookie. Welcome to the Shard! Anyway, what is this book idea of yours? I wouldn't mind hearing about it, if you're willing to share. Also, what's your favorite Cosmere book?
  17. I'm so excited! I just had my officer speech today, and it went really well. I'm so happy! I won't know for awhile whether I made officer or not, but I feel like my chances are pretty good.
  18. Really? I feel like it's the opposite, because there's more rules than exceptions (at least compared to English). Of course, it's still a new language for me, and it's still kind of hard for me to learn it, but it's not THAT hard. Also, @A Budgie, I was kind of able to read some ornate that, because some of those words look kinda like Spanish words.
  19. @A Budgie ¿Por qué te sorprende que hablo español? No es una gran sorpresa, ¿sí? Tambien, he hablado sobre mi clase de español antes, yo creo. Si necesitas ayuda con la tranducción, no ten miedo de preguntarme.
  20. Hey, so I finished the Spanish AP test today! It actually went really well! I felt like it was way easier than the mock AP test my teacher gave us, except for maybe the simulated conversation. That's still really hard, but I did a lot better on it than I normally do. Except for when, during one of te 20 second times I'm supposed to talk, I said about half a sentence than said nothing else because my brain forgot what it was doing. Other than that, the test went really well. I'm hoping for a 5, but worse case scenario I got a 4.
  21. Nah, you look cool. I think the short hair looks good on you. Of course, I haven't seen you with long hair yet...
  22. I think what @Fatebreaker meant was which type of POV; as in, first, second, and third person.
  23. Ugh, I'm super stressed. I have algebra homework, I want to study for the Spanish AP test tomorrow, I have band auditions Wednesday after school, I have sectionals Thursday morning, then, finally, after school Thursday I have officer speeches for band. I haven't started planning my speech yet. I don't even know how long it has to be. Oh, also, I made a big goof during band class this morning. Our band director was teaching us minor scales and stuff, and he taught us about relative minor scales, which basically means that to find the relative minor of a scale, you stay in that key but start on a minor third lower (e.g. A Major's relative minor is F# Minor). My director asked me what the relative minor of concert Db was, and my brain died. I took about five seconds, then said Fb (which is a minor third up, not down). I immediately realized I was wrong, but it was still embarrassing.
  24. I didn't take the Psych test, but one of my friends did. Of course, I didn't realize that the test was today, until I saw your post and realized the reason she was studying during band class this morning was because she had to take the AP test later. I don't know how she manages to study and play her bass clarinet at (almost) the same time, without getting caught by the band director.
