When authors steal your book ideas
StrikerEZ replied to StrikerEZ's topic in General Brandon Discussion
You know, I've come to realize that maybe the fact that Brandon "stole" my book ideas isn't all that of a bad thing. You know, because, "Great minds think alike," and all that. -
Hey, welcome to the Shard! Have an upvote and a spiked delicious cookie! DISCLAIMER: Side effects include, but are not limited to, hearing voices, gaining supernatural powers, having the sudden urge to kill everyone, and completely losing control over your mind and body. The Dark Alley™ claims no liability for any damage done to/by the eater of this cookie. Calderis and cloudjumper already basically answered your questions, so I'm just gonna ask you what your favorite Cosmere book so far is. Also, do you know what the Cosmere is? I assume you at least have some idea, as you've noticed Hoid showing up on all these worlds.

Hmmm...that's interesting. I'm not quite sure what to make of this. It seems like we already lost a UIB agent...delightful.

Okay, so I'm still fairly inexperienced, so I'm not quite sure how to strategize for this game, especially with all these roles. As for the neutral roles, I honestly think their best bet, especially for those that need to find someone to win, is to try and set up as many PMs now and see if they can find their (potential) lover. I don't think it's a great idea to claim these roles in thread, because that just makes it easier for the elims to potentially take out two birds with one stone, if the Pauper Noble finds the Convict's Ward or vice versa. Orlok, I'd be very careful if I were you. Especially if you actually are the Pauper Noble. As for some of the Allomantic roles, I think we definitely need to make as many PMs as possible early on in the game, so we can at least start setting up alliances and people that we trust. Of course, this also runs the risk of the elims infiltrating tons of PMs and either spreading false info or attempting to gain the trust of villagers. I definitely don't think we need PMs every night, but this first night would be very important to start setting up trust. I'm not sure who I'm suspicious of yet, though Jon always seems suspicious to me (I don't know why, just the way he posts). Besides him, I don't have any huge suspicions yet. I know we need to lynch someone this first day, even if it's just to get info (or maybe even get lucky and lynch an elim), but I'm gonna wait a bit and see some other suspicions from other players. EDIT: I forgot to talk about the other Allomantic roles (and then lost all my progress on my edit ) For soothers/rioters that are villagers, I'd hold off on using your abilities to get rid of votes on yourself if your bing lynched, as that could just cast suspicion on yourself. I'd just try to use your posts to remove suspicion. If you have an important village-only role, then I think it'd be okay, as a last resort. As for neutral role she that might have this ability, the same would apply. And elims that have this role...they'd have the best chance of vote manipulating to make someone seem suspicious and make us mislynch them. I'm not sure what to make of smokers/seekers. Seekers, depending on how many charges they have, should definitely try to find out as many peoples roles as possible. I'm not sure how to use that info though. EDIT2: Thugs.... Thugs are fairly straightforward. Just try to survive, and potentially use the fact that you survived to cast suspicion on anyone you suspect as elim? Of course, if you're wrong, then you could get lynched for that. I don't know.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'm still fairly new at this, so I'm not quite sure what to make of this. It mostly seems like this vote was a last minute ditch to get Yitzi unlynched, but then when Arinian turned out to be village, that would've immediately implicated Brightness Radiant, who started the last minute switcharoo on the votes. I don't think that's a very smart elim move, because if both Brightness and Yitzi were elims, they would've just given themselves away. Plus, I'm getting a village read on Brightness, and she's been elim the past two times, which doesn't necessarily prove her innocent, but I think it makes it less likely for her to be an elim again. As for Yitzi, I'm getting a gut village read on him as well. He tried so hard to make all these plans for village to hunt down elims, an de I don't think an elim would give such detailed plans like that (which would make for a great elim move, especially if they left out the little ways they planned to exploit the plan), but this move with Brightness and my gut read on Yitzi makes me less suspicious of the two of them. I'm definitely feeling village on Brightness, though I fear if we lynch Yitzi and he does turn out to be alien, that'll implicate Brightness.

While I definitely agree that the Stone Shamans likely keep tabs on Szeth, through all sorts of methods, I'm hesitant to believe that it's magical in any means (besides possibly having a Shaman with an Honorblade that grants the Transportation surge tail Szeth around all the time). Plus, there's a brand new WoB from the Supanova signing that confirms that the oathstone has no magical properties of its own (I'll go edit it in later). As for the Honorblade, I'm not sure how the Shamans would even know that the bond has been broken. It's an interesting idea, I just don't think it's likely. EDIT: Here's the WoB: Also, could someone help me out with linking to quotes and WoBs?

I can't come up with any abbreviations off the top of my head right now, though I'll come here and post them if I remember any later. As for the Allomancy/Feruchemy thing, I've usually seen it used that you put the allomantic metal first then the feruchemical metal second. At least, that's how I've been doing it, along with some others I've seen. I do agree that there is almost no consensus on a "correct" way to refer to Twinborn combos (some using A-metal/F-metal, my method, your method, Pagerunner's method, and probably several other metals), though it would be nice if there was a sort of communally agreed upon method of discussing these combos.
-
It's the last one. I'd never even realized that it could be pronounced the other way. I love the way the second one sounds though, especially since you'd have to emphasize the 'erz' at the end, since it's capitalized. I wear it to my left. I'd never even thought about how it could go to the right, that just feels unnatural to me, though I guess there is no 'correct' way to do it.

StrikerEZ replied to Lord Bookwyrm's topic in Mistborn
That's what I was thinking, but I was wondering if it would be possible to speed up/slow down the memories. Do we have any confirmation whether this is possible or not? Either way, it'd create interesting storytelling devices, I think.- 155 replies

Okay, so one thing I've noticed as I've read Sanderson's books is that him and I came up with lots of similar ideas. Long before I'd ever heard of Brandon Sanderson, I came up with several ideas that were part of the basic ideas behind some of his books (very arbitrarily, but still). I'm just going to list all the ideas that he 'stole' from me. The idea of a prophecy influenced by an evil force. I came up with this one years before I'd ever even heard of Brandon's books (though not before he published Mistborn, as I wasn't even five yet). It's actually one of the main ideas driving the world I've created, along with another one I'll get into next. Of course, Brandon's use of the evil force manipulating the prophecy was far more subtle than mine, and his evil force was way more limited in what it could do with the manipulation. The idea of some sort of corruption encroaching on the inhabitable land. This one was in the same world as the prophecy idea I had, though Brandon used it separately (in Liar of Partinel, though it's not quite canon yet). Of course, while the basic idea is very similar to his fainlife, my corruption is far more sinister and actually more deadly (in my opinion, though I'm sure some would disagree if I ever write the story). Another idea I had was to show a fantasy world progress through the ages. I've always felt so proud about how I'd never read or even heard of a fantasy book doing this, but then I found out that Brandon is doing just that. His Cognitive Realm is very similar to another idea of mine, with the whole idea of a person's soul/mind leaving their physical body when they die and enter this version of the world that's basically a shadow of the real world. I even had the ghosts in this realm eventually fade away to some great Beyond (though this was a much slower process than in the CR) and, just like Brandon's books, it was also possible to stay behind and even go back to the real world. Of course, returning seems to be a fairly common idea in books that involve some version of an afterlife. At least, ones that I've read. Also, the idea of this magic ability granted to people at random suddenly turning into this horrible curse and people who got this curse were shunned or deemed as unhonlh monsters, when, before the change, these people were very powerful, important, and almost considered holy. Another thing that's happened to me is that Brandon has definitely influenced my ideas a lot. He was actually the biggest influence for what i consider the starting point for my version of the Cosmere (even though this interconnected world idea didn't come until much later, when I discovered the Cosmere a long time after having read The Reckoners). He did inspire the idea that my books could be connected, but I'd already come up with an idea (based on his influence) that was leading me down that path anyway. The idea was a version of Earth where reality and physics decided to break, and all sorts of crazy things happened, which included gaining superpowers. This world wasn't heavily influenced by The Reckoners. When I discovered the Cosmere, it helped me push some elements of the world I was having a hard time with into a bigger universe. Anyway, has anyone else had this happen to them before, where an author 'steals' your idea or influences your ideas so much that you don't even realize until much later?

StrikerEZ replied to Lord Bookwyrm's topic in Mistborn
I actually really like your idea of Steel/Tin, as you could use it do all kinds of cool things. You could tap your sight and make very accurate steelpushes, assuming you have a good enough eye and are smart enough to kind of understand how to calculate the trajectories and stuff enough to do super accurate pushes (it'd be a bit easier with a brass spike containing Zinc Feruchemy, assuming you could do the calaculations to even begin with). Pewter/Zinc could be a really interesting combo. You would have the advantages of being a super enhanced fighter, especially with enough training without burning pewter so that your body is already used to intense fighting. Then, with the mental speed from zincminds, you could easily figure out your opponent(s)'s tells, and figure out what they're going to do next, how they're going to attack, where they'll go, etc. This makes for a fighter that could rival even that of someone burning atium. Bronze/Zinc could be interesting too. You just Seek for some Allomancers, then you can use the mental speed from zinc to help you determine what metal they're burning and figure out where the heck they are. I'm not sure about the specifics of this one, but I like it. Something I've always wondered is how coppermind memories you stored while in a time bubble would be affected afterwards. If you stored a memory in a cadmium bubble, could you later tap it at a faster speed to view it in real time? And vice versa with a bendalloy bubble.- 155 replies

Okay, I'm not sure why, but I feel really suspicious of Drake Marshall. It's just a gut read right now, and I doubt that it will develop into anything later. I just don't feel really comfortable jumping on a bandwagon right now. I want everyone to at least get a chance at the game, and I'd rather vote on someone who hasn't been voted on yet, though I'm still suspicious of. Ninja'd by Yitzi and Randuir.

Dragonsteel and other unpublished works?
StrikerEZ replied to Brightlord M. Alhstrom's question in Cosmere Q&A
Actually, not many people have read it. There's only a few copies out there, and Brandon doesn't like giving out copies to people. Even if he did, we wouldn't be allowed to talk about what happens in the books. But we know from Brandon that Dragonsteel is gonna be about Hood's backstory, is set on Yolen, and I believe includes the 16 original Vessels. Someone fact check me on that. EDIT: Ninja'd by Calderis. He basically summed it up pretty well. -
I went ahead and tagged him for you, just to make sure he sees this. Mainly because I'm not too great at this theorizing stuff.

Hey, welcome to the Shard! Though, this is already someone else's topic. I'd recommend starting a new one to introduce yourself.
-
Honestlh, we really have no idea how Galladon or Hoid were able to worldhop to and from Sel. Especially with the Dor raging around in the CR. Anything that we could talk about it now would just be pure speculation.
-
Well, everyone has basically already said everything that needs to be said. I'm just gonna add that we should be careful of who we trust, and try to keep our real suspicions on the down-low, so as not to alert the Aliens that we're onto them or that we have certain roles or whatever. Also, this will probably either end horribly or hilariously. I can't tell which is more likely.

Umm...I'm not sure. If the Vessel could manifest as their physical form, then I'm sure it could happen. But I don't think that could happen. I'll let some other theorists come and answer this one.
-
Yeah, I gotcha. I do agree the situation with Sadeas was very tricky. I both like and don't like how it was solved.
-
Yeah...I do agree Sadeas deserved to die way earlier than he did within the books, and I'm so glad that Adolin finally had the balls to do it, regardless of the consequences. But I still don't think it was right. In my opinion, killing is never right, not even when the person you kill has killed people (even if it was a lot of people). This has always been a pet peeve of mine. Authors tend to downplay killing, even if it's in a fight between people, and both sides are willing to kill the other. Especially in wars and brutal fights. Killing should never be an option. The moment you decide the best way to solve a problem is by killing someone, that crosses a line in my book. No one deserves death, no matter how despicable they are. They deserve to rot in prison for the rest of their lives. Sadly, I think that in our world (mainly wars and stuff) killing is seen at least as a last resort option. Now, when it's self defense, as in someone is threatening you or someone else's life, you should do whatever you can to prevent that person from killing anyone. If that results in them dying...I'm not sure how I feel about that. I definitely don't think they should've died, but it's better than just letting them kill you. Sorry for getting sidetracked there, I just feel very strongly about killing and I probably didn't make very much sense in this post. I forgot what my main point even was. EDIT: severely ninja'd

Yeah, Calderis makes a good point. Plus, there's a WoB out there (Sorry WoB-hunters, searching for them is a pain on mobile) that not all shards have direct opposites, though some do (i.e. Ruin/Preservation). So I doubt that Odium has an opposite. Not to say he doesn't, but I doubt he does (unless you want to count Devotion). Also, I find it highly unlikely that, of the ten (I think) confirmed Shards, none of them have been shown as collecting other shards or having been collected by another shard, which would mean that your collecting shard is one of the six we haven't had confirmed yet and also has collected some of the other five.

No. I can't remember where I got Striker from (it might've been from beyblade actually, but I think I just chose it because it sounded cool). As for the EZ, that originally started off as my first and last initial (ES), but EZ definitely looks cooler.
