Why does Nightblood drain investiture?
Spoolofwhool replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Warbreaker
Interesting indeed. Regarding whether Nightblood knows it's original name, I wonder whether Nightblood really knows its own name, either the current one, or its original one. I haven't read Warbreaker in some time, but is there any point where Nightblood actually refers to itself by a name? I know it recognizes when someone calls it by its name, it knows they are talking about it. However, that could just be because it is mentally linked to them and sees the intentions behind the use of its name. We already know Nightblood's memories are faulty. The only long-term memories it has are of the moments directly surrounding its creation. It forgets anything that has occurred after that point, which is why it still thinks Arsteel and Vasher are friends and Shashara is alive. So it is not necessary that Vasher has been tampering with Nightblood's memories, it's just faulty enough that it cannot remember well. It would make sense though, that Vasher changed Nightblood's name, because its original name would've given clues to what it was, or its creation, something he wants to keep hidden. That or the name was something so "Shashara-like" that Vasher changed so he wouldn't keep being reminded of what he did, though just having Nightblood is more than likely reminder enough. I wonder though, what kind of changes Nightblood has been going through. I suspect that Nightblood contains a splinter of Endowment, as a result of all its breath gaining sentience, or something very close to a splinter. I wonder if Nightblood is, in a sense, trying to complete itself. Brandon has described it as a hack between systems, and as a result, Nightblood has issues, such as continually requiring more breath. As such, I'm thinking that Nightblood is trying to change itself so that is no longer the case, or maybe refine its personality. Nitpick: He killed her to prevent the spread of Type IV awakened entities, not knowledge of awakening steel. I don't think the two are the same, though the former does require the latter. -
The difference probably is that Allomancy is directly of Preservation while Feruchemy is of both Preservation and Ruin. I don't think Occam's Razor can be used to say that anyone can store into Lerasium. It seems more likely that you would have to be a feruchemist first.

Great, great story. I picked up Worm at the start of September, and finished it 3 weeks later. A real rollercoaster of good writing. For those who didn't know, the who thing is a bit over 1.5 million words, which is about 3 times the length of WoR. One thing I find really interesting about it is that I find practically every character likable, not just the main group of Undersiders or the Wards, but also super minor characters. Leet and Uber are cool. Skidmark had his appeal with his ideology and how he organized his group. Number Man, I would want to know his backstory more, about what caused his change in alliances. The general point is, that few characters feel like padding to the story. I can hardly think of any which genuinely bored me by their existence, I would love to see backstories for most named characters. Probably my favorite update was Interlude 27b. If anyone wants to discuss it a bit, then I'm up. Sorry if this is a necroposting. I'll makea new topic if it is.

Why does Nightblood drain investiture?

Nightblood has another name? Where was that stated? -
Aluminum wouldn't be that useful against inquisitors unless they started as a Mistborn since I doubt they would deliberately give an inquisitor aluminum allomantic powers otherwise.

You mean 1001%? -
And a lovely pringle to boot, I'm sure.

Here's an excerpt from Way of Kings on the matter, from Cett's PoV, 5 years after Szeth assassinates Gavilar. As it says, the darkeyes footsoldiers mainly wear leather armor with steel caps and breastplates while lighteyes wear full armor. Footsoldiers also carry large shields, slung over the back when not in use. I believe the leather armor for the lower body is like a kilt/skirt, as it was observed that Kaladin wore trousers underneath his leathers, which isn't allowed apparently.
-
True. Really, the only time when a close-up of spheres is necessary is when Kaladin is trying to buy the bandages with dun spheres, so no glowy effects. I can't image another time when you would need to see spheres close-up, except on first introduction.

That's interesting. The main thing that you would have to solidly communicate to the reader somehow is the motivations of the superhuman organizations regarding why they have hidden themselves until that point, and why they aren't directly taking control. While it's true that it isn't like Reckoners where people with powers want to be in the spotlight, statistically, give a large enough body powers and someone will want to, and will reach the spotlight and take control.

Mhm. It was being silly anyways.

True. Other than Szeth stunts, the only other need for special effects in WoK is around the end, when Kaladin fights at the Tower, and when Shallan is doing her stuff and Shadesmare. Since those would take place in later seasons, the budget should exist. Also what gore? Last I checked, Shardblades made very little.

Just post the next question.
-
Ah yes, you are correct. My apologies.
-
Naturally. We'll get a beautiful episode of Szeth assassinating Gavilar, with epic special effects for the lashings, shardblades, and stormlight in general... then we'll get low-key ones for the rest of the season.

So you're saying run all of a character's back story in a season, then run the main story in a movie? I disagree with that idea. As you said, a large interesting point that the flashback characters have had so far is that we've seen them deal with their current issues in the main story, while slowly learning about their past issues via the flashbacks. Giving the whole backstory first would ruin it, since then we would just understand the characters from the start, without getting to slowly know them and understand the issues they have dealt with and how they are relevant to their concurrently written current issues. Also, I don't think the backstories have enough content to make a full season from it, and the main story would have too much content to fit a movie. It would be better just to do a seasons or movies of the book directly, if it were to be done. Nonetheless, I think it would be interesting to see SA in a video medium. At the same time though, I fairly large part of me wouldn't want it to happen, since if it did I would go watch it, and chances are that it would destroy part of the magic of the series for me. On the other hand, Brandon seems like he would keep a close eye on the project if it ever went there so it probably wouldn't be that bad.

Preservation set it up so that the mist snapped 1/16 of the people mistings, with 1/16 of those who snapped being sick longer so and becoming Seers. Also, the mists didn't snap people to be Nicrobursts, Leechers, Sliders or Pulsers since Preservation decided they wouldn't be useful powers at that point, and they were replaced with malatium and atium, at least. That does add up 14, so I'm probably missing a substitution. 16% isn't 1/16 by the way, also, I doubt the numbers were even between all misting types. Seems more likely that Preservation would manipulate the numbers a bit so that there would be more useful abilities like Steel, Iron, Pewter, Tin, Zinc, and Brass than ones like Aluminum, Duraluminum, Malatium or Gold.

Currently just playing Binding of Isaac Rebirth with Afterbirth and Hearthstone. Trying to get a full completion on Isaac so I'm mainly stuck on the Keeper. Also, I limit when I play to during lectures/tutorials for the ones I don't need to write notes during so I don't play it that much during the week. -
1. Peter Pettigrew 2. Sirius Black 3. Lily Potter 4. Severus Snape Edit: Remembered he wasn't in the original order. 5. James Potter (Can't remember his first name) 6. Albus Dumbledore 7. Remus Lupin Name 7 characters in the Fablehaven series who were born human, but at some point in time became magically changed (not necessarily during the story and magical healing doesn't count)

Asexual, I'm pretty sure, and my friends, with whom I've talked about it with also think so. At the same time though, I'm romantically inclined towards people of the female persuasion, but even then, it's fairly slight. It's kind of a lonely feeling I find, because I can't really understand people when they talk about romantic or intimate relationships, though I do understand how important people find it. Kind of sucks really.

The Elemental Tetrahedron: a Magic System
Spoolofwhool replied to Pagerunner's topic in Creator's Corner
This is really cool. A very nicely thought out base system. It would be interesting to see if this could be developed further, like actually applying it to a story setting. How would people interface with the system, and how would it affect the world. If there are any more updates, I would love to see them. -
@BeskarKomrk ninjaed me on quoting about the God Kings not dying, but here's also a quote from the same chapter about the priesthood's stance on Returned having babies.

I have the relevant excerpt here: It seems you are correct that nothing has been confirmed, but the fact that VenDell thinks it's a possibility after experimentation seems to imply that it is indeed possible for an identityless TrueSelf to access a keyed metalmind.

Emotional allomancy: Doomed to irrelevance?
Spoolofwhool replied to Mason Wheeler's topic in Mistborn
Hate to double post, but I've found something interesting. Apparently the Basin already has Bauxite refining and other chemical processes for increasing the yield of aluminum, so the amount aluminum we see in Era 2 is probably going to be the peak amount, unless they radically improve these processes. Excerpt: -
Good point. Looking at the chapter 3 synopsis of BoM on Coppermind, it seems they did talk about a Trueself ferring divesting him/herself of all identity in order to access a keyed metalmind. I don't have an actual copy of the book to confirm the exact passage though.
