I Need Help Writing Fanfiction
Physicist of the Cosmere replied to Physicist of the Cosmere's topic in Creator's Corner
It's the fact that I can only work on this fanfic. Also, I think being too focused on the plot was my problem. That's kind of a weakness in my writing in general, I get too caught up in what's happening and what people are saying that I often neglect imagery and tone.- 4 replies

I've hit a strange writer's block where the only thing I've been able to work on is a Voltron fanfic involving my own character. The subject of the fanfic isn't important, though. My problem is that it's really hard for me to write somebody else's characters. Whenever I start writing dialogue, I get caught up thinking, "Would they really talk like this?" "How would they react?" "What would they think in a situation like this?", and then I stop writing. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions. I know all writing blocks pass, but I'd like to finish something for once in my life.

First off: Awesome concept! The first thing that popped into my mind was that the actors would then actually have to go on an adventure to defeat the evil in that movie, so that once the movie "ends", they can get back. Or maybe the two worlds mesh, which could wrec all sorts of havoc.

My very first story has a premise that everyone says sounds really cool: Elves and other mythical/fantasy creatures in the modern age. The problem? My execution stunk more than chull dung. My protagonist has that cliched life where they move around a lot and her parents were super secretive, but she didn't suspect any secrets. Then her parents get randomly attacked by redshirts members of the villainous organisation, and she gets rescued by an elf that was apparently keeping an eye on her. She takes everything remarkably calmly, not freaking out, questioning anything, nope, she just shrugs it off because the story's gotta keep moving. She finds out she's half elf and half human, which again, she never suspected until then, even though towards the beginning I specifically wrote someone teasing her for her pointy ears. All of my characters were so two-dimensional, you could get a paper cut from them. There wasn't one main villain, just a whole bunch of baddies that wanted to destroy the elves because they thought they were evil because reasons. The elves have magical powers, and for some reason, my protagonist has several very powerful abilities, despite only being half elf and having absolutely no training. And then there was that snippet I wrote where she and her romantic interest both date other people to make the other jealous. At the same time. And they both end up developing feelings for those people as well as each other. If you haven't guessed it by now, I've deleted the manuscript.

Sanderson "Would you Rather"
Physicist of the Cosmere replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Odium, because at least I'd have a chance of meeting Kaladin, though likely on unfriendly terms. Would you rather become a Lifeless or a Koloss?- 954 replies

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Physicist of the Cosmere replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you're watching Mysteries at the Museum, and they're showing exhibits pulled straight out of an episode of Supernatural, including, "A long metal spike used in Witches' sacrificial rituals". I freaked out, and then they showed the image of a straight up Iron Spike. I literally shouted out loud, "HEMALURGIC SPIKE!!!!!!!!!!! HEMALURGY IS REAL" So yeah, I'm melting down all of my earrings and throwing the slag into a river. In the meantime, I'll be joining that Other Guy who has to run from the mob of Sharders that wants me lynched for implying Earth is Cosmere. -
What about on Roshar? Any Knight Radiant or Squire would have an unfair advantage in sports. There's also the important question of pranks. How might some bored Misting or Radiant punk someone? "Alright, who Lashed everything in the entire kitchen to the ceiling? I'd be more impressed than mad, but it's chouta night, and none of the cooks are Windrunners." (Ignore me if I'm derailing too much, though)

When it's the 4th of July so you try drawing Aons in the air with your sparkler. -
Perfect. Now I have a noble beast I can ride into battle. Ryshadiums are getting out of style anyway. In return I leave this wooden training lightsaber, *buzzz* and *whooszhs* sounds not included.

Illustrated SA Scenes & Characters
Physicist of the Cosmere replied to sheep's topic in Stormlight Archive
With your permission to use your art, I instantly thought of your modern AU drawing with Kaladin and his skateboard with Syl on it. My brother's really good at designing skateboards. He's even trying to start his own company with it. Maybe I could commission the piece- 188 replies

Yeah, thinking about it, if each Herald took a country to teach them and get them caught up on lost knowledge, it'd be a lot faster than having them rush all over Roshar and try and get everyone taught before the next Desolation.

If you throw it on the ground, you're guaranteed to get someone upset. Chasmfiends are like driver's tests. -

I'm not totally sure if I want to buy this theory, but I'm definitely not walking past the display window yet. If I want to be a scientist worth anyone's time, I have to analyze all of the facts and explore all of the possibilities before coming to a conclusion. I agree that it smells a bit like that "Kaladin is Dalinar's son" theory, and could undermine his character, but I do remember Kaladin talking about how his dad referred to the Heralds in WoK, during one of the first flashbacks, when he goes to heal that girl's hand. The Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson, page 153. Emphasis mine. TL;DR - Lirin seemed to care quite a bit about the Heralds, and that his son knew what was accurate about them. Like, he cared a weird amount. He cared about it enough that he earned a reputation for it in Hearthstone that estranged him and his family from the rest of the townspeople. Being a surgeon, I get the part that deals with medicine, but why the multiple lectures on the subject? I get that Lirin was pretty woke, and he wanted Kaladin to be educated and know his stuff, but if I remember correctly, Lirin wasn't super religious. I don't remember Kaladin mentioning them going to church, or whatever the equivalent is on Roshar. (correct me if I'm wrong, though). Kaladin also mentions how Lirin didn't believe in Voidbringers. What if he knew that they didn't currently exist? Or what if the memories of fighting them each Desolation was so painful that he denied their existence. And it would make sense that he would talk about the Lost Radiants having, "too much power and not enough sense." The remainging nine Heralds were counting on the Knights Radiant to take care of things while they broke their oaths. The only issue I can find here is that, if I were a Herald, I'd be a lot more salty about the Radiants mucking things up. That being said, I have two questions. Does Lirin mention the Radiants and the Heralds again in The Way of Kings? Second, how many of the ten Radiants are accounted for? We don't know a whole lot about them, and given the torture they kept having to endure, it wouldn't be inconceivable that one of them would want to settle down and have some semblance of a normal life in raising a family and helping others. It could also explain why Lirin was so against Kaladin learning how to fight. Heralds have certainly seen enough of death and war. Now, I'll say it again, I'm still not completely sold on this theory, but while there's evidence supporting it, I can't ignore it. Maybe I'll have to make another post for arguments against it to see how well it holds up under attempts to poke holes in it. If anyone else wants to give it a go, though, be my guest. I usually get bored of theory threads pretty quickly, but I'm curious to see where this one goes.

Poll Will Kaladin and his parents be reunified
Physicist of the Cosmere replied to Elendtheking's topic in Stormlight Archive
What I'm mostly worried about is not if his parents are alive, but if they're alive, how they are emotionally. Losing a child is the hardest thing parents can go through. (and they know Tien died. Didn't Kaladin write them a letter?) The grief and pain of it can tear a marriage apart. In one of Kaladin's flashbacks, Lirin had gotten drunk. What if he became an alcoholic? What added burden would that put on Hesina? What kind of affect would that have on Kaladin, seeing his parents like that? This was one of the things I couldn't stop thinking about when I finished both books. Out of all the "they didn't deserve it" characters, Kaladin didn't deserve it the most. In the first chapter, At the very least he could find his parents safe and happy. Oh storms, I'm going to cry reading book 3, aren't I? -
Dual-Wielding Shardblades
Physicist of the Cosmere replied to Ecthelion III's topic in Stormlight Archive
Agreed. The closest I've ever heard of to serious dual-wielding is what the Scots used to do in battle several hundred years ago. They would hold a huge sword in one hand, and the other hand would hold a dagger, with a shield strapped to that arm. That being said, though, it doesn't give them a huge advantage. It's more to give them a slight edge in battle, and to maximize their use of defensive and offensive weaponry. With a Shardblade and Shardplate, you have all the advantage you could ever wish for, short of being a Windrunner. -
I can't be the first person to notice that some of Sanderson's characters seem quite similar. Now, let me be clear, I'm not saying this is a bad thing, and I'm not insulting his writing. I'd be lying to myself if I insulted his work, and also, I don't want to wake up with a Hemalurgic spike in my back. I just thought it'd be fun to point out parallels between characters. For example: A young, high-ranking man who just wants to lead their country and do what's best for the people, but their dad doesn't make things any easier. At least they have their awesome girlfriend to support them, who's also a pretty good fighter. I think Elend and Raoden would get along pretty well, actually...

Basically just a place to come up with modern day products, gadgets and such that might be handy for modern-day Mistings/Mistborn. Here's the one that inspired me to start this thread: Soda cans that have the inside lined with the Allomatic metal(s) of choice, and once you pop the top, the lining starts to dissolve into the soda. So not only do you get a refreshing, sugary beverage to enjoy, but you also get a strength boost, or added senses, or what-have-you.
