[OB] What parts of Oathbringer touched you?
Mistform replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in Stormlight Archive
My favorite moment was the The Girl Who Stood Up. The moment was so perfect between Wit and Shallan and I really felt all the stuff he said about failure. <3 <3 <3 -
[OB] Will Shallan and Adolin have a child?
Mistform replied to TheDoomsday's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think that would be a terrible thing to happen given both of the character's readiness for that kind of responsibility. You are correct in that it would create quite a bit of plot, TOO MUCH plot that would consume the rest of the story. Taking care of a child is LOTS of work and TIME. Shallan needs to improve her mental health for the marriage to work let alone a child. If other people do most of the caregiving that lets them do exciting plot stuff but Adolin knows what it is like to have a parent who is away much of the time. -
Yeah, Odium seems like the type to lie to you, but the creation of the Oathpact seems to indicate Shards are bound to keep certain oaths/promises.

I think the "betrayal" of the spren was them giving Surges to the humans rather than the parsh because they had tastier imaginations / spren were shaped by their ideas more. The Words of Radiance epigraphs support that. I like the theory, we definitely have an imperfect time line; for example in Oathbringer Malata mentions that the "widespread worship of Honor destroyed many Ashspren (releaser/dustbringer spren).

They have ALL of the Honorblades so they should have that one. -
All Rosharans once like the Shin?
Mistform replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well I think white people are more prone to balding and wrinkles, that's why we think people of other races are younger than they are. Some chinese groups get dark spots on their face with age (at least my relatives) but unless you know that you wouldn't use it to judge age. As for the being white thing, the in book art makes the Alethi look pretty white (the eyes could be subtler than I imagined I guess). Hoid telling the bunny story does indicate that the Shinovar environment is "normal" or common or Yolish. -
As a Wheel of Time fan that got into Sanderson from that, from reactions I saw it was lack of reunions between long separated characters (Rand, Mat, and Perrin, being a big missing one), and lack of page time for various important characters (mostly Nynave and Moraine at the bore doing little). These characters have been apart for years, and fans want to see how they would react to each other and the emotional resolutions for the fans. I personally felt that the Last Battle on the fields of Mellior didn't feel that "real", like I'm sure the tactics were good but I think the scale was too big to be meaningful to me. Too many plot threads is another, there was a sample paragraph with the Ogier cleansing the ways with singing but it didn't flow so it was cut.

I would use the term Igneous not volcanic, volcanic rocks are igneous but they are also porous due to the gas from a volcanic eruption. If crem is from eroded bedrock it would not be clay immediately because clay requires chemical breakdown unlike sand or silt. To nitpick your nitpick, inorganic nitrogen usually requires nitrogen fixation to be available to plants. How crem is recycled is an interesting question as garbage left out can be blown and left in the next town by a highstorm, so it can't take a rock and break it down gradually. Rivers erode their bottom during floods/high water events, then deposit sediment as the water level goes down again. So I guess crem recycling would work by the highstorm eroding then depositing. I feel like some of the crem must be ocean floor sediment to get enough sediment volume, however much of the nutrients in the ocean come from terrestrial sources, which presents a problem here.

All Rosharans once like the Shin?
Mistform replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Stormlight Archive
I feel it is rather Earth-centric of us to believe that the Shin are the original humans. But what traits? Big eyes and balding? That is just them being white people. Everyone else (Including the Iri (who are not native to Roshar, which gives some support to your idea) have epicanlithal folds (asian eyes)) but we have those here on Earth without Highstorms, which makes your theory very weak. Also why do we think the Shin are like those on Yolen? We know the Iri are not native to Roshar, shouldn't they be the more likely candidates? -
Why do Truthless exist? (Potential WoR spoilers)
Mistform replied to Faceless Mist-Wraith's topic in Stormlight Archive
The Shin consider soldiers to be lowly, they have Oathstones just like a Truthless. He visited Urithriu just after being declared Truthless. Later on in WoR he considers staying their but he cannot do it. They consider the Knights Radiant to have fallen and stones in the East to be cursed. So he was made a soldier (who are lowly), the Honorblade gives him the power of a Knight Radiant (soldiers and oath breakers so even lowlier I predict), and exiled to the East where he would be forced to walk on cursed stone. Szeth had only been Truthless for seven years in Way of Kings (so about a year before the assassination of Galivar I believe). Given his skill with the Honorblade, he clearly had martial skill before being made Truthless. This skill could have come from being a soldier and given that soldiers also have Oathstones, he would be used to obedience and being treated like a slave. As for the Honorblade retrieval, by being exiled he would be on stone all the time, so perhaps the Shamanate could do some sort of magic. -
@maxal @kari-no-sugata I always liked Shallan the best because I identified with her, as a woman finishing my Bachelor of Science I liked her scholarly pursuits and her Natural Science drawings. Or to use hyperbole: Shallan is the best character come fight me . But in all seriousness I want to see more interactions between Shallan and Jasnah. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by her not being "broken", as I'm not sure how everyone is defining brokenness. Tyn didn't think she was broken which she defined by having to do terrible things because Shallan's lies/memory suppression/coping mechanism made her behavior that of an "unbroken" person to Tyn. As for her lies, I've heard from someone with personal experience that the loss of large chunks of childhood memories can happen to people who had abusive childhoods. Brokenness seems to mostly refer to the breaking of the spirit web. I feel we should exercise caution in defining brokenness in terms of how overt/obvious/external the symptoms are, having coping mechanisms that make you appear "normal" doesn't mean you haven't been hurt or need no help.
-
Well the Ghostbloods seem to seek power or at least Mraize and whoever funded Shallan's dad. The "Ghost" part of Ghostbloods could refer to them being very sneaky. If they did go for power I feel they would control stuff from the shadows. They definitely seek information and will be a source of it. I suspect their goal/purpose is more local scale than the 17th shard as the cosmere big picture isn't going to be explored in depth until Mistborn era 3.

Well according to the wiki it is ch 21 of The Bands of Mourning. I think just copying the membrane proteins might be enough to prevent the body from rejecting the skin graft. However given the level of fiction/its magic they might as well copy the DNA.

Graphic Audio Adaptations Master Thread

Well I got the Sanderson Humble Bundle and was listening to Elantris as I had not read it yet. The excerpt/commercial of the R.A. Salvatore book at the beginning (which is like 7 minutes long) confused me until I listened through it as it jumped right into it and explained what it was at the end. -
I wonder if they could see the Kandra spikes with their Steel/Iron sight.

Mistborn Tarot: Spoilers for all books (Discuss)
Mistform replied to Kingsdaughter613's topic in Mistborn
So by modern Scadrial do you mean Alloy of Law Era with the cards referencing original Mistborn characters? I feel that Bands doesn't really make sense as a Minor Arcana as the only Bands are the Bands of Mourning which are very singular and important. Coins in the final empire were boxings and clips (and still used after the Catecendre (Bands of Mourning ch5 pg 103 hardcover)) but coins is still fine. The medallions are very new but if the deck is being made in the Alloy of Law era (era 2?) it could be argued that the creator was adding the new "hip" thing. The card is much bigger than I expected, seems difficult to shuffle -
As someone who has done cosplays, I would recommend using insulation foam instead of styrofoam as it can be sanded. It is also sturdy as I have made Sango's giant boomerang (from Inuyasha). Insulation foam can be cut with an exacto knife (scoring then snapping is best if you want a straight edge, but cutting and sanding is fine). One thing to note is that hotglue will melt it, so don't use it (unless it is the night before a con and you don't care ) . If you want to make Shardplate, I would recommend Worbla (it is a mix of plasticy stuff and sawdust) but it is much more expensive (but makes great armour).

Magic the Gahtering: Cosmere edition

I haven't read the Stormlight Archives yet, so I can't comment on the flavour of the cards. I did notice a lot of double coloured mana costs and no draft archetype helping 2 colour uncommmons but I haven't looked at stuff too closely. Mark Rosewater, the head designer of Magic the Gathering has a Nuts and Bolts column about making your own set, which should be helpful. http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/nuts-bolts-troubleshooting-2016-02-15 -
I don't think he used spikes to give himself full feruchemy. I don't think Ruin got all the feruchemy abilities, only the "useful" ones. I was more interested in the symbolism of the 3 spears. Having looked at my book it seems that the Lord Ruler was stabbed by two spears, and he removed one to stab Kelsier once. Not sure if that helps reveal any secrets.

Magic the Gahtering: Cosmere edition
Mistform replied to Glamdring804's topic in General Brandon Discussion
That would work. I guess Nightblood can be wielded by your creatures safely (If we add a legendary clause the living weapon mechanic would have to be modified), I suppose we could also go for an artifact creature and never mind it being an equipment, the Theros god's weapons were not equipment (if only because legendary enchantment artifact equipment would not fit on the type line). I think trying to make a Nightblood card where one of your opponent's creatures is forced to equip it then have it kill that creature and other ones that your opponent controls would be ridiculous to format and be broken. Having Nightblood give -1/-1 counters to the creature that wields it each turn (eating their breath or whatever) would be cool but definitely a different card than the one where he attacks thing on his own. -

I'm not sure, maybe the cards are only saved for a certain length of time or something, I've never used that site. -
So this is a thought on HOW this happened. We know he had a spike in his head granting him steel/iron sight. From the last few pages of the secret history we know Spook and he were experimenting with the old steel inquisitor spikes. I predict that the head spike is an old inquisitor spike. I feel that he has three spikes because of the "pierced by 3 spears" thing (always another secret). I think that he has 2 smaller hidden spike. I think he has one that steals connection, however Spook's journal mentions him finding all but transferring metallic art ability useless (or too difficult to find a use). So if he got his thread by spiking a living person, I suspect they would need a greater cognitive view, so a cracked mind and spikes. He seems to have feruchemy innately so either he or harmony modified his spiritweb or he merged with a Feruchemist. However the emergence of metalborn (not sure if this term refers to both allomantic and feruchemical abilities but both are almost certainly found in the Southern people) he found a way to bestow the ability on them (control of the cognitive realm perhaps). Perhaps he learned to manipulate the cognitive realm, which gave him the understanding of Identity which he passed onto the Southern Scadrians. I do think the body needed to look like his because of connection(/Realmatics? I think I am using that correctly). Although he could have gotten a cognitive shadow of his bones, perhaps. I think how he connected the spike to his spiritweb is by getting the cognitive shadow and stabbing his cognitive self with it. The key to getting between realms seems to be places of high investitude, so I think he may have used Harmony's shard pool (or perhaps the increased fertility of the Elendel basin was enough). An offhand remark: I think Kelsier pretended to be the Lord Ruler to keep his promise to Fuzz about not toying with the hearts and minds of people, and to Vin as well to make it not all about him.

I'm fairly certain they are.

For Nightblood these are the closest existing magic cards: http://magiccards.info/mi/en/144.htmland http://magiccards.info/5dn/en/119.html However as Nightblood is awake all the time living weapon would be better (it enters equipped to a 0/0 token) http://magiccards.info/c15/en/245.html . I'm not sure if Infect or Deathtouch is better as Nightblade sometimes only makes people sick. As well you can only equip creatures you control, but you could give control of the equipment to the other player and have an effect that makes creatures equip it. Another question is how we define "evil", non-white creatures could work, but white often has soldiers which Nightblood has killed lots of. -

Mistform replied to Glamdring804's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I think the Chasmfiend should cost 4gb based on the costing of 6/6 creatures with no downside on magiccards.info I think Vin's sacrifice ability doesn't fit. The cost is usually sacrifice one of your own creatures or each player sacrifices on their upkeep. Also this ability is often on DEMONS which doesn't fit Vin much. However causing them to sacrifice when she deals damage like in this card http://magiccards.info/eve/en/33.html(which would work well for her Ruin side) could work. However I feel she is more preservation. Another card has sacrifice when you take damage which could also work. http://magiccards.info/sok/en/19.html I think the artifact/non-basic clause should be just for what you control but I'm not sold on it. I think it might be cool to have counters to represent the metals, either starting with them and removing them for effects, or adding them with level up. Here's a card with level up (that looks thematic) to explain the mechanic: http://magiccards.info/roe/en/51.html In Magic the Gathering characters with multiple cards show off different aspects on each card and they have decided lore wise that the planeswalker cards are just how much a planeswalker is willing to help you rather than their full power.
