Hey guys, I'm aware there's already a Knights Radiant quiz here in the forums, but I kinda made one of my own after finding fault in the first one. (Don't get me wrong - it was fun and engaging on its own right - but the questions there were kinda odd, and let's admit it - the last one had a frickin' surplus of Truthwatchers. Kudos to the original creator though. Without you, I'd never have had the motivation to make one of these things). Anyway, it uses the online quiz creator as well, because the website's easier to make use of than other sites I've tried, and I for one have had experience with the thing before. Anyway, here's the link to the quiz: https://www.onlineassessmenttool.com/the-surgebinder-within/assessment-40080 Please post your thoughts on the quiz afterwards. Any criticisms as well. Also, to be perfectly honest, I'm kinda scared that people will find this quiz too imitative of the first one. If so, just tell me and I'll be glad to remove it. (Paranoia people, haha, sorry.)

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Mr. Staccato replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted. (I seriously tried to find a way to twist your boon into something, well, twisted - I ended up thinking of you sharing the big screen with Big Bird or of you being carpet bombed the next time you go to a stadium - but what the heck, gotta give good boons now and then.) As for your bane, your likeness has just been recreated and immortalized into a statue somewhere in New Zealand - where it will be doomed to forever accumulate bird droppings. I wish for my very own television network - one that airs my favorite shows 24/7 and will never, EVER air any of those stupid dishwashing ads. Pretty please? -
My, this is awkward. A peanut being handed a cookie... Its like were serving food on this part of the forum.

I actually posted a description of what I would be like if I were an Epic somewhere but I forgot where I ended up putting it. Then again, it might not have ended up in the forums at all. Maybe it just ended up on a word document or something in my LP, haha. Okay, so here goes: Primary Power: My primary power is like this - think of my Epic as the dot in the middle of a circle. Say the circle's radius is twelve yards (stretch your arm - the tip of your middle finger to your nose is 1 yard), and whenever I move this invisible circle follows me. Now, any object smaller than me that I touch or throw that ends up crossing the boundary of my circle will explode in a violent burst of fire. So basically, I can turn anything around me into a grenade provided that it ends up twelve yards from me! Secondary Power: I can manipulate the shape, width, and curvature of this invisible circle around me with enough focus on my part so as to better make use of my weird explosion powers. Secondary Power2: If I ingest your blood and you happen to stray into my circle, I can turn your blood itself into a dormant explosive. You take a step out of my circle and you. WILL. BURN. I can only maintain a connection to your blood for a maximum of 2 hours. After that, you are free to go. Weakness: Aside from the fact that from hereon out my Epic has to start wearing unfashionable gloves and can never be on the receiving end of physical affection - for quite obvious reasons, mind you - having a coin on his person instantly causes him to lose access to his powers. Name: Radial Costume: Hoody with flame designs. Wears a grenade pin on each finger (over his glove) as if they were rings. He also has them for earrings and browrings. Brand of evil: Not really evil. More like juvenile. He is immature, rude, derisive, dumb, arrogant, contrary, sadistic, and is constantly in demand for attention. If anything he does is to be considered evil, then it would be his taking pleasure in causing heartache to people. For that reason, whenever he is aggravated or insulted by others (which happens very often considering his immaturity), he takes revenge by brutally killing family members, close friends, or soul mates.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Mr. Staccato replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Oops. Your past bane has been rendered moot by your pre-existing feminity - that or I may have inadvertently doubled it (sorry, headphone wearing dogs are horrifyingly bad at distinguishing people's genders). You are now twice the woman you were before - not that it matters anyway since you just wished yourself into becoming a hamster.Boon: Congratulations! You are now a hamster from the Hamtaro-verse! You are revealed to be some foreign relative of the irresistibly cute Oxnard. (P.S. It seems to me that you're doing quite an awful lot of world-hopping.) Bane: From now on till infinity, you can no longer eat instant noodles without suffering from instantaneous death. @The Only Joe - Because of your wish, by extension, you are now also a hamster. Don't worry - you can still eat Chinese take-out though. I wish for an indestructible pair of cool headphones that works perfectly and can never be stolen from me. -

Granted. You are now a sibling to Alleria, Sylvanas, and Vereesa Windrunner of the World of Warcraft universe. You are now also magically female. I wish to become an Epic capable of separating himself into three fully functional clones with differing personalities. -
Exactly. The brunt of the reasoning why so many think spren with irregularly paired surges are an impossibility lies on the fact that the Nahel Bond which lets them provide power supposedly imitates that of the 10 Honorblades. So further combinations are therefore non-existent, following this line of thinking. But I find it weird that everything stops there. Yes, they imitated the Honorblades, but it's not like the Surges cannot exist independently from them - they're fundamental forces for Harmony's sake! If anything else, the Honorblades are the ones dependent on the Surges. They're the ones tapping into its powers. One can argue then that the pairings of powers the blades are embodying were never absolute and only came about because someone - maybe Honor or Cultivation (or both) - purposely designed the pairings for each of the blades. As a result, the spren formed the Nahel Bond and imitated the paired powers that came along with it without knowing that they didn't have to. They could have chosen different Surges for themselves but didn't know that they could. Maybe in the future, other spren types will realize this. Anyway, thoughts regarding this theory?
-
I am actually at peace with this now. New notes have been released stating that "it is theoretically possible for there to be a Nahel bond with a spren that grants two Surges that are not paired together among the Radiants." Whether this means my theory is correct or hints of the godsurges WoB once stated are now surfacing, I have no idea.

Balut is fine enough, unless the vendor gives you an egg that's begun developing bones. I have never quite forgotten the feeling of eating the newly formed skull of a baby chick.. still gives me nightmares. *shivers* Granted - but in addition to receiving about 200 souls worth of Biochromatic Breath, you have also received 200 souls worth of Literal Breath. From now on, you must brush your teeth 200 times everyday just to stave off bad breath, and that's only in the mornings... If you don't brush your teeth, your Breath becomes a weapon of mass destruction. It is my most sincere wish to have a pet barracuda. -

So in short, the only place I can ever make my Edgedancing work is in the Philippines. Hahahahaha! Thank you Nightwatcher for your gift - because I happen to live in the Philippines. I have managed to cheat the system . Now to start hunting for some balut... Granted. Kaladin tells Sigzil in the third book of the Stormlight Archive, "Hey, did you know that coinshots can ACTUALLY push on silver?" Demoux and the rest overhears this, thinks Kaladin is a worldhopper, and ends up dragging him back to AoL Scadrial. And that's just your boon! Your bane is that... your forum pic has been changed from Bobba Fett to that of Jabba the Hutt. Enjoy . I wish the frickin' upvote and downvote button on this forum were on opposite sides of our posts instead of stuck together in the right-hand corner... *grumbles* -
Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Mr. Staccato replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
The Nightwatcher has no idea what TimTams are. You explain the concept to her but it fails her understanding utterly. Instead, you can now magically conjure thick bricks of unsweetened cocoa - hard enough to break your teeth and crack open skulls. (Oh but hey! Free ammunition! P.s. I'm so not coming near you during a food fight.) I wish to be a fully-functional Edgedancer here on earth who fuels his Surgebinding with the innate Investiture of a good PB&J sandwich instead of Stormlight. -
Okay, first of all, are there moderators in the house? Can somebody please change the 55 to a 45? - I blundered with my math here, can somebody please help me fix this? Anyway, to the discussion! I get this, I really do - I'll be the first to admit that asking for such specific answers when we're barely even a fifth through the entire series is a huge mistake on my part. The information here has been useful and Brandon really did clearly state that there were only 30 magic combinations or something in the book. But all I'm saying here is that, is it really so impossible to consider that there might be more than just the 10 combinations of Surgebinding Brandon has already confirmed? Think about it - the spren imitated the Honorblades. But the spren really are quite intelligent (outside the physical realm anyway). Who's to say that there aren't spren out there who figured out how to delineate the distinctions between the Surges? I understand that Surgebinding forms a circle like what @kingofnowhere said, but as long as there is no WoB explicitly stating that the relationship between the current paired Surgebindings are absolute, well, then I'm holding out on this hope. I apologize if I might come across as persistent or annoying here. It's just that... harmony, think of the combinations! Think of the possible synergies that's never going to be put to use just because of this stupid pairing rule. Anyway, I'm not asking for more Orders, just more pairs. The Orders are fine with just ten. For one, I figure no one's going to get any of the names or reputations right if Roshar suddenly ends up with 45 heralds and Knight Orders. Ha!

You are welcome, adorable headphone-wearing pibble! I swear, reading Sanderson flipped some weird authorial switch in my brain and suddenly now I write things. I don't know how or why.

Oops... so much for claiming I've done the math already . Haha, the great Mr. Staccato has never been good with arithmetics. Thank you my dear @Eagle for telling me this for I shall now begin deep-frying my pride and dipping it tartar sauce in preparation for eating it. Here, have an upvote!

Oh. That makes sense. But the way it's been presented, I always really thought the pairing was only thematic in sense. It looks fixed and the pairings together reasonably convey an ideal or something - but, correct me if I'm wrong here, okay? - but nobody really ever explicitly stated the relationship between the surges were fixed. We just kinda... ended up thinking they were. Anyway, I forgot that part about the ten honorblades, haha. Thanks for reminding me about that. But I do have this feeling that possible combinations do in fact exist. With the number of surprises, sudden revelations, and Easter eggs Brandon keeps juggling, I wouldn't be surprised if such an oddity pops up in later books. The explanation for cases like that would be wonderful. Out of curiosity though (this is kinda branching out of topic but bear with me, kay?), if you were to pair any of the two Surges together, what Surges would you pick and why?
-
I usually spend most of my time in the Mistborn boards so I haven't gotten around to reviewing the rest of the topics here to see if this question has already been asked. If it has, please point me to the corresponding post, but if not, well then, why don't I just start asking questions? Okay here's the thing - there are ten surges, right? There is nothing in the current books about the surges being paired (or at least I think so - I'm through 600 pages of WoR). So it stands to reason that there could possibly be 55 combinations of these powers, not only 10. (Don't worry, I've already done the math.) I know that the Orders get these paired surges from specific types of spren born of both Honour and Cultivation (or something like that), and people are probably going to argue that this is the case because there are only ten kinds of spren out there capable of providing surges, but if that's the case then that's very, very underwhelming. By Brandon's own admission and from the accounts we see in the book, there is a near UNLIMITED number of spren out there so I find it very, very hard to swallow that only 10 kinds of spren could possibly provide Surgebinding for the people of Roshar. I can accept that of the 55, only 10 Orders were established, but seriously, the other 45 pairs should also exist. So, what are your thoughts on this people?

I don't think this is such an issue. Doesn't Shallan make use of her safehand in clutching her boards so that she can draw? I recall her doing this during her observations on the ship that brought her to Jah Keved and some other times aside from this. (And drawing is supposed to be a feminine art too). Anyway, the safehand is sacred, yes, but I don't think that just because it is you have to go through life keeping it away from just about any activity. You would have to use them sometime, otherwise playing the cello would require women to sprout fingers from their chins. (Although to be honest, I'm still not done with WoR, so there might be something there to contradict my statements here. If that's the case then I apologize in advance.) As for the general question of why music is a feminine art, I have no idea. Historical precedent, maybe? Or is it because music has always been considered an activity closely related to that of beauty? Intriguing question.

Reading the same books as your children
Mr. Staccato replied to Rayse's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Hey guys I know this is kind of a very late reply but since were talking about books, I'd want to recommend a few too. I agree. Deltora Quest was an awesome series, although for the life of me I can't find anything about their sequels. Anyway, Deltora isn't heavy stuff, but they're genuinely lovely reads, and I find them to be quite entertaining. Sadly, I read through them at a later age so much of the magic was coming off when I finally got to read through them. Putting that aside, I'm honestly surprised nobody has recommended A Series of Unfortunate Events. They may be children's books but they're compulsively readable, especially the later parts when VFD gets thrown into the mix. They also touch upon human nature in a humorous but painfully realistic way, and I for one find their questions regarding right and wrong without touching too much into religion or spirituality an added bonus. The Earthsea Quartet as recommended by @Hood is also great. The magic in the book is one of the few I'd consider truly mystical, and the protagonist of the book is someone many children at their early teenage years will find as relatable. Last, the 39 Clues can also be a great read if your children love the Artemis series. They reminded me so much of the Hardy Boys, although the 39 Clues tends to be faster-paced, very exhilarating, and WAY funnier than the aforementioned series. -
The thing with facing up to change is that you never get to know everything that changes with it.

Wayne Disapproval Thread (Potential Wayne-related spoilers)
Mr. Staccato replied to aeromancer's topic in Mistborn
Okay, I just want to say this. (Please don't downvote me until you finish reading through the entire post.) Wayne is a splendid character, and I agree with @Mrs.K.Stormblessed that having access to his POV is a saving grace for when Wax and Marasi get too serious in their investigations during any of the books. He's funny, smart, charming, and likeable, but I think @aeromancer has a point. Wayne is completely funny, and he gets out of a lot of stuff simply because of being such an outrageous individual, but the water tower incident was a serious eyebrow raiser for me. Yes, I've heard about his intentions, and just like so many of you I found his undying loyalty to Wax endearing, never mind the fact that up until this point in the book, Wayne was still mistaken about Steris. Now, what I do in fact take issue here is the frickin' water tower. Alright, first up, did he have to do that? Was there any other way for him to disturb the wedding without going out there and causing a miniature flood? Like, come on, that's Wayne! He probably had more than one card up his sleeve on how to cause a ruckus in the proceedings. Yes, he drained the tower, he beat up the thugs who he ordered to cause the sabotage, but the thing that really got to me was the very idea that he had to drop one on the cathedral. Because argue all you want but there is nothing fundamentally good about trying to drop a big hunk of metal down on the heads of people you care about. You just don't do things like that, even if you expect no one to get hurt in the act. And anyway, even if you did expect nobody to get hurt from the process, the very fact that you would make use of such a thought as justification to carry on with a plan like this is isn't something you'd normally congratulate people about. Wayne will be Wayne. Yes I realize that he's not a malicious person, and yes I also understand that he has issues and problems, as much as to rival that of even Wax'es, but Wayne's grip on right and wrong is so... tenuous. It's right there though, and he knows better than to kill or harm people when the alternative is still possible, but see, it's the little things that bug me here. It's not even that he insulted Steris for me, or that she was the reason why he dropped down the tower - after all, I completely sympathize with his intent of trying to secure a good life for Wax, even if his perceptions on the matter are flawed and incompatible with the real score. He's blind, he's rash, but that's okay, because he did it all for Wax. I guess what I'm trying to get at here is that I like Wayne too, but I want people to see that the reasons he have for doing the things he does doesn't always agree with me. He's funny, but sometimes he's just so painfully misguided, and reasons alone shouldn't be enough justification for him to be going around doing half the things he's doing, even if he thinks what he's doing is right. But seriously, no hate on him. This is just a serious examination of his character and I for one love his flaws completely. I just hope that Wayne will someday take serious strides to improve upon his immaturity, although I can't help get this feeling that he'll always remain the scoundrel that he is now. -
Hey guys, I'm sorry if this question isn't completely related to the topic but this is the closest thread I've found. I don't know if somebody in the forums had already asked Brandon about this (and I'm far too exhausted to begin going through the transcripts again), but if they have, they might as well just answer. Anyway, this is my question: A pewter hemalurgic spike is supposedly able to steal physical feruchemy. Let's say you use it to steal the power of a Brute (pewter ferring). So does that mean when you finally have the spike embedded in your body, the very fact that the spike is made of pewter allows you to make use of it like a metal mind?
-
First of all, I thought this post was about some kind of aluminum and atium alloy I didn't know about so I had to like, go through the wiki and ridiculous amounts of sources pertaining to questions asked of Brandon before realizing the above might actually be just a plain old typo. I am so stupid , me and my ridiculous expectations. But hey, that's life. At least I found something interesting! Anyway, although I second @Red Ferring in his idea that you can't completely unkey your very own aluminum mind, some part of me finds the metalmind swapping idea awesome. I can almost imagine what it would look like in later Mistborn books - who knows, metalmind markets? Like, no need for steroids! Just get yourself a pewter metalmind - makes you as ripped as Arnold Schwarzenegger without having to put up with that ridiculous accent! Incidentally, that would give us a whole new perspective to the workings of Feruchemy. Hope it works anyhow.
