I wonder what would happen if you compounded a Lesarium alloy...

As I reread the Stormlight Archive books, I noticed something odd about Jasnah's death. The book references a "long, thin knife" (115) that was stabbed directly through her chest, emerging through the other side. It also mentions how she was immobile on the floor as this happened. It made me think immediately of Hemalurgy, but I decided the connection was to tenuous and dismissed the thought. Later on, however, Shallan describes the event, saying " I watched them stab her straight through the heart" (438). The fact that Brandon felt the need to emphasize the fact that she was stabbed through the heart, rather than saying she had to have drown from the severity of her wounds, seems very telling of the fact that he's setting the scene for Hemalurgy to have taken place. My biggest question about this is whether or not Hemalurgy can steal the abilities of a surgebinder, as they are reliant on the gifts of spren. Even if the bond could be separated from the original holder, would it not immediately break as the spren lost its host and "died", becoming an ordinary shard blade? Also, even if the bond could be maintained beyond separation, the obtainer of the bond, as someone who killed to gain the power, is unlikely to be considered worthy of the bond and therefore would not obtain any power from it. What are your guys' thoughts? I'd love to hear some other interpretations =)

theory Kaladin's Chapter header is a nod to the Steel Alphabet

Ah, ok. Thanks for the info! -
theory Kaladin's Chapter header is a nod to the Steel Alphabet
Bugsy posted a topic in Cosmere Discussion
At the beginning of each Kaladin Chapter in WoK, an image at the top of the page is displayed. It shows a crescent moon with spears raised in front of it. These spears align to make a symbol reminiscent of the Steel Alphabet from the Mistborn books. This symbol appears to match most closely with the symbol for Malatium. I have no idea if this is at all relevant or if it was even already noticed, just thought it was kind of interesting Sample Chapter Heading: -
[SH spoilers] Kelsier and the 17th Shard

Out of curiosity, how would one receive access to Dragonsteel Prime? I've heard a few theories mention it, and it would be awesome if someone could point me in the right direction -
So, does hemalurgy mean you can kill anyone by a stab in the heart?
Bugsy replied to king of nowhere's topic in Mistborn
Investiture can't be destroyed, so unless the actual process of melting the spikes somehow initiates a transfer of investiture, I don't see why it'd cause the charge to be lost. -
BoM spoiler: It would rob him of portions of his soul. The aspect that was stolen would depend on the type of blessing created. For example, a blessing of presence would steal his cognitive functions. Because that portion of his soul was already taken, another matching blessing could not be taken from him as well, even if he did survive the physical process. On top of that, his soul would be incredibly damaged, to the point where even Harmony might not be able to help him.

It would be interesting to see this applied to interstellar travel. BoM spoilers:

So, does hemalurgy mean you can kill anyone by a stab in the heart?
Bugsy replied to king of nowhere's topic in Mistborn
Would the hemarulgic spike be able to be able to be attracted by the various magic systems? I can't find anything that specifically says it, but I was under the impression that a piece of metal within the body wouldn't be easily affected by the various forms of investitureETA: it would be interesting to see this attempted by a coin shot and a iron compounder, as the coinshot could launch hundreds of toothpick-like metal slivers while the compounder yanks them out Edit 2: replaced "Steel" with iron, apparently my brain was dead -

One potential issue with this is the problem of getting close enough in the first place; they may be near invincible, but it doesn't particularly mean they're idiots either. Also, you'd have to put in and remove the spike, as a spike lodged within them would simply allow them to keep their powers. If they heal around the spike, it could lead to some problems removing it. Also, it would be relatively difficult to land a blow directly through the heart, especially if the person were actively moving, which is likely in the case that such an obvious threat is present BoM spoilers: This does pose an interesting question though. It seems like a relatively effective way to kill a powerful enemy, with the added bonus of assuming his powers in reduced form. -

I would highly recommend Pierce Brown's Red Rising series. It, along with the 1st Mistborn trilogy, make up my 2 favorite series

I personally think that it's because Odium hasn't invested. He hates all things, and therefore would not expend energy creating them. This lets him splinter shards one by one, letting his power recuperate in between.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Bugsy replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you're discussing Doctor Who with your friend and accidentally call the Ood the Parshendi (Just happened today) When on your World History final you accidentally write "Skaa" instead of "Serfs" (Also a true story) -
I'm honestly a little doubtful about this. What are the odds that Marsh managed to see Atium being burned, then lived to tell the tale? I believe Kelsier is the only Skaa Mistborn he's ever seen, and I doubt Kelsier would be willing to waste Atium simply to let his estranged brother see what the pulses sound like. Most likely, Mash was making an inference based on previous knowledge. Do we ever see Vin describe Atium pulses in the book? That would provide much more compelling evidence ETA: Whoops, just saw your previous post. I'm sure that at some point someone noticed the potential discrepancies in pulse length, but it's not something one would share with others. This would be especially true since TRL wanted to hide the other metals' existence, and would have therefore have snuffed out any rumors

Potentially an effect like a Kandra missing a spike? Also, any idea if multiple powers could be stolen this way or if it would destroy the soul to the point where nothing else is salvageable?

Oh yeah, completely forgot those... Thanks, lol.

Ah, I was under the impression that Atium and Malatium were both included in the 16. I can only think of 14 others (copper, bronze, steel, iron, zinc, brass, tin, pewter, aluminum, duralumin, gold, electrum, chromium, and nicrosil. What are the other 2, out of curiosity?

One of the major points of the book is that Preservation cannot create without the assistance of Ruin and vice versa, so why is there a net gain in Allomancy? Logically, Feruchemy, which has no net gain but rather preserves energy for a later date, seems much more aligned with Preservation than Allomancy, which has an increase in power. The applications of the 2 powers also makes Feruchemy appear to be more of Preservation. For example, Feruchemy allows for the storage of memories over long periods of time while Allomancy is mainly used for fighting and destruction. Allomancy also utilizes the power of Ruin when atium is burned, rather than all power coming from Preservation. Finally, Allomancy consumes the metals that are used as fuel, which is in alignment with ruin, while Feruchemy can reuse metalminds and causes no true damage to them.

The intent of a shard shapes its host, so even if Odium were not inherently bad, he would have been warped by the powers he has by now. Also, Odium is specifically destroying shards, rather than increasing his powers by assimilating them, as his shard supposedly matched his original personality and he didn't want his hate to be tainted, so I'm somewhat doubting he was ever a good guy

In MB, aluminum has 2 unique properties. One is that it removes metal stores from the body, and the other is that it "blocks" external allomancy; aluminum hats prevent emotional allomancy, aluminum itself cannot be directly affected by iron or steel, and aluminum also would not show an atium shadow (According to WoB). Another example of something that resists external physical allomancy is a Keeper's metalminds. It's explained that the more of an attribute a Feruchemist invests, the harder it becomes to manipulate. As aluminum is impossible to manipulate, it suggests that aluminum inherently has investiture to make it so. Aluminum also appears to mitigate the powers of shards; it has a significant deletory effect on both the powers of Preservation and Ruin. Not only does it prevent allomancy (the power of Preservation) from functioning properly and removes allomantic stores entirely, it also negates the power of Ruin by not forming atium shadows. The fact that aluminum can completely negate the powers of shards suggests that another shard must be enabling it to do so. Finally, I've always found it odd that Atium as a God Metal has no real compliment in allomancy. (Lerasium is not numbered among the 16 main metals and therefore should not be counted as a component of allomancy, but rather a cause or provider.) If aluminum were a God Metal, it would maintain the patterns of paring found among the rest of the metals Note that if aluminum were invested, it would have to be by a shard with the ability to mitigate the powers of other shards, and as of now there does not seem to be a likely candidate who has been revealed.

Hey everyone, I've read most of Sanderson's books, but I just joined the forums. Since I've joined, I've realized I know a hell of a lot less about the Cosmere than I thought. I've read the "Cosmere 101" thread, and while it was pretty helpful, I'm still not 100% on everything. In this thread, I'm basically going to say my current understanding of the Cosmere in hopes of receiving corrections or additions from my fellow 17th sharders. So, here it goes... In the beginning, Adonalsium created the Cosmere through use of his powers. Eventually, he created the humans. 16 of these humans managed to defeat Adonalsium and splinter his power into 16 aspects, or shards. These shards were then collected by the people who shattered Adonalsium and the shard holders spread out across the galaxy. Originally, the shard holders controlled the shards, but eventually the shards' "Intent" began to shape the personalities of the holder. Shards can also divest themselves of part of their energy and invest it in something else by performing Investiture, which can be reflected in virtually limitless ways. These shards also power the various systems of magic found across the Cosmere. In the Cosmere, there are 3 realms. The physical realm, or "real world", the cognitive realm, in which every object contains its own impressions of self, which are based largely on how others view said object, and the spiritual realm. The spiritual realm appears to be 'where' the magical powers are stored, as it is said that Hemarulgy steals a piece of the soul that grants powers. Losing part of your soul seems to be lethal, as victims of Hemarulgy seem to die when their powers are stolen, although that could be due to instructions of Ruin. Finally, a malignant shard named Odium is intent on tracking down and destroying other shards until he is the sole remaining shard holder. He does this by "shattering" the shards, which scatters its power and kills the holder. The remaining splinters retain the shard's intent, but have no controlling force and therefore is unable to further oppose Odium Edited for typos

My favorite books would probably have to be the 1st Mistborn trilogy. Thanks! Slightly disturbing that I'm eating a cookie that required the death of a person, but it actually tastes pretty good!Nice to meet you guys =)

Ah, I wasn't aware of Trell's wider role in the cosmere. I thought perhaps he was an unidentified splinter or something. Thanks for the clarification!ETA: Do you know if this band of stars was visible from Scadrial both before and after the planet was shifted by Rashek? I'm not sure I recall mention of this in the book
