  1. Welcome to the forums! It's always great to have a new face around here. What books of Brandon's specifically have you read so far? Mistborn and The Emperor's soul are my favorites ETA: Somehow, I scanned over you saying you're an active duty member of the military. Thank you for your service!
  2. I don't see the rationale behind waiting a cycle to share info. It makes it so I can't defend myself from your accusation (which I would be more than happy to do if you would explain your reasoning) and doesn't serve to protect you whatsoever. In fact, announcing to the Eliminators that you have info is simply going to get you killed before you have a chance to reveal it, assuming the info is credible. You also base your analysis on Joe's actions, assuming he wouldn't have followed your vote so late in the cycle had Cloud been his ally, but from my knowledge of Joe based on MR14, he is definitely not beyond staging events to clear his allies of suspicion.I'm currently torn between Hael, because of his attempt to cast suspicion baselessly, promising evidence sometime in the future, and Arraenae, for false claiming in the beginning. Actually, come to think of it, having roleclaimed to Joe and still having not been killed is slightly suspicious in and of itself. I'm leaning towards Hael, however, largely because I can see some of the rationale behind Arraenae's actions
  3. Yep, you got it right When you hear someone remark that something is "hoed" and you think they're referencing Elantris at first
  4. Welcome to the forums! It's always nice to see a new face here! What books of Sanderson's have you read?
  5. I don't think Elb is guilty yet, but that's just a gut read. Since I'm relatively new and all, I'm not sure how accurate those are on my part. I agree that we need a lynch, however, so I'll vote if no more compelling evidence comes forward.Oh, and I've seen abbreviations and misspellings be counted as votes, I think it'd count so long as the GM understands it.
  6. The Cosmere is sort of a macro-series. It's composed of all of his adult novels, which share a universe and other interesting characteristics. I will avoid specifying what these are to keep from spoiling anything, but discussing and debating the ramifications of these constants is one of the main things done here on the Shard
  7. 2 people were written out that turn. That means there are 2 Deathnotes. Joe very well could have seen that and been claiming falsely, or he could be telling the truth. I'm less inclined to believe him about his role at this point, because it seems to continue to change each time it poses a threat to him. Joe also did appear to be building his strategy from C1, and later said he was trying to keep people from trusting the "Mayor", IIRC. For this to be true, he would have had to be corrupt on C1, rather than being recruited starting C2. Once again, however, this could have been a lie. There's no true way to verify his role except by killing him.
  8. Any rationale for keeping him alive just one round? I say we either kill him now (via murder or lynch) or leave him alive; half measures won't help us right now. I personally think we should let him live, because it's better for us if we know 1/2 of the people trying to manipulate our votes, rather than both being anonymous. It also might force Ryuk to waste a turn killing Joe. If Joe turns out to be Ryuk (which, by the way, I doubt based on the risks he's taken), we still can kill him later, and if he isn't we can disadvantage the player who is. I suppose we could avoid lynching him until Ryuk does it for us, if that is what you were proposing, although I'm not sure it is what you meant
  9. Hey, welcome to the forums! I have a few tips I can give you The 17th shard is a friendly, intelligent forums, so try to only provide criticism if it is constructive or nesecary. Also, try your best to use complete scentences and clear grammar (although judging by your introduction, you're already pretty good at that ) The Cosmere is the universe containing all of Sanderson's adult novels. The laws of magic within the Cosmere are constant between books, so you'll likely see theories that use evidence from multiple books to support a Cosmere-wide concept The forum uses BB code for formatting. The computer has a formatting widow, but if you're on a mobile device I'd suggest you learn how to use it. It's very similar to HTML, except it uses square brackets rather than triangular ones The little arrows in the bottom right aren't agree/disagree of like/dislike, they're votes that affect rep (that little green number underneath the pictures). Don't downvote a post or theory just because it doesn't match your thoughts, because that's a criticism of their posts intrinsic value rather than its validity. Couple of questions that might help others give you more advice: Have you read all of Sanderson's books? Are you interested in any form of RP or logic games? Do you like art?
  10. Hey! Welcome to the forums! There are plenty of RPs to choose from here, just wait a sec while I find the links... Edit: ok, here are 2 posts highlighting some of the RPs here. I'd recommend Sanderson Elimination, personally http://www.17thshard.com/news/brandon-news/around-the-cosmere-rps-and-social-groups-for-a-r274 http://www.17thshard.com/news/features/around-the-cosmere/around-the-cosmere-se-mbi-and-strategy-rps-f-r272
  11. Hey guys! Sorry for my inactivity this cycle, I had a busy day at school and a track meet that just ended a little bit ago. Right now, I haven't had much time to analyze the info I've seen, but I have tried to analyze some info about Sheep since some others appeared to be suspicious of them. My analysis so far: Sheep originally claimed to have been told of a different L than Joe, but then (I believe) said they clarified with Joe showing that they had the same person. This could be a result of Sheep fishing out the identity from Joe, but I'm inclined to believe Joe is too experienced to fall for that. Alternately, Sheep and Joe legitimately could have both been told. This does not prove either of their innocence, but makes me less suspicious. I don't think the fact that L is still alive is any indication that they aren't evil, either. If L is killed, the 2 of them will be under a level of suspicion Rykku (<-- I know that's wrong, I mean the main evil guy. I'm not familiar with the source material, sorry) can't afford to face at this stage. They'll either have to delay until L shares his/her identity more (Which L should undoubtedly not do yet), or make it look as if L did so and kill the other to keep it quiet. They're also each liable to be scanned, so they might have to fakeclaim as a murderer. If it's publicly revealed that L scanned them as innocent, we can then begin to trust them based on evidence. I currently trust Joe based on gut and the general selflessness of his actions. Sheep I see neutrally. Edit: I've been typing this on and off for the last half hour. SO MANY NINJAS
  12. This has some pretty interesting ballance mechanics. I, for one, would be interested in seeing how it plays out. Quick question, though. You said any faction could have any role, but the thief win condition directly contradicts the alien one. Perhaps alter the thief to make their win con be the win con of their faction, plus a secondary win condition of controlling a working launch code at the end. Oh, and the General/politician should probably be made public at the start. I'm not sure about the mechanic/technician votes counting double, as it may reveal a role and make the aliens' job much easier. Perhaps make it optional or make it so all votes against them count double? Also, does the technician pass their role when they pass the codes? It seems like that's what you mean, but just making sure
  13. Welcome back! I, as a relative newcomer, look forward to see your new (to me) face on the forums! Not sure if this warrants a reminder, but DO NOT touch the cookies.
  14. Welcome to the forums! You seem pretty cool, we can always do with more creative people like you around here. You may want to check out the creators corner, it seems like you'd fit in well. Also, if you haven't read it yet, I'd hugely recommend the Mistborn trilogy, also written by Brandon. It's a good starting place to launch you into the mysterious "cosmere" you're bound to hear about on the forums. Oh, and don't take the cookie. It's sharp.
  15. For Doctor Who fans:
  16. For future reference, simply type: [color=red]Playername[/color] I was about to vote for DC for reasons previously stated, but since there's no unfriendly vote-changing mechanism in this game, I see no value in further bandwagoning. I'd also like to rescind my offer of being a sacrificial guinea pig, since the fact that a conversion and kill can't happen in the same day makes my previously proposed plan obsolete EDIT: Ninja'd. Arraenea, instead of using misspellings in the code, it works (and, in my opinion, looks) a bit better if you type: [code]code here[/code]
  17. I propose that everyone willing to sacrifice themselves to help the village publicly volunteer to take part in this plan, allowing L to choose who to scan randomly without the risk of noncompliance. This will work much better the more volunteers we get Plan: C1: L chooses and scans a random volunteer C2: Nothing, to allow L a second scanning day in case he turns up an elim C3: Messages volunteer, who collects names of murderers + cops, and forwards them to L C3 part 2: Volunteer is killed As a show of good faith, I volunteer as tribute
  18. Akiyama walked away from Joseph's meeting somewhat torn. Following the speech, some ideas and plans were passed around, although few seemed willing to cross the line from planning in the hypothetical to actually pledging resources. They all knew M could have sources in attendance. Now he had to choose: a gamble to take down M, or damage control that would require him to risk compromising some of his sources. He had put off the decision long enough. After a period of consideration, he resolved to join Joseph's group. He couldn't afford any setbacks, not without his business collapsing. He was in, all or nothing.
  19. Akiyama came into consciousness gradually. He'd gotten very little sleep the night before, but knew he could spare precious little time in bed. He stretched, arching his back, and rolled on his slide to look at the clock next to him. 1:00. How was it that late already? Gods, he hated jetlag. He got up and strolled over to the only Internet-connected device in the building: a large, seemingly outdated desktop computer. He knew its looks were somewhat deceiving; despite its outward appearance, it was one of the most secure servers in the world, using a total of 6 VPNs around the world, each of which generated huge amounts of fake traffic to distract those that would follow the signal. The real signal was routed through one of these fake server banks so it, too, would appear to be a distraction to the experienced invader. Its large casing was filled with state-of-the-art hardware, providing it huge processing speed. Much of this enormous power was dedicated to unique anti-spy softwares developed by himself and his team. Sitting down at the computer, he opened his public email used as his business line. It was the only piece of information linked to himself he allowed to exist on the web; his team was very efficient at whitewashing his activities, and he acted through his underlings whenever possible. He rarely received mail on the address, but those who managed to find it were always skilled or rich enough that the jobs were intriguing. When he checked his inbox, he was surprised to see 2 messages awaiting his attention. Recognizing the email that had sent the more recent message, he clicked it open and absorbed the information contained within. It wasn't good news. A man known as M had been poking around Interpol digging up information on the criminals in the city. Akiyama himself was unlikely to be in danger; as far as he knew, he had not yet come to the attention of the authorities. Still, he didn't relish the idea of having a rival crimelord in the city with blackmail information on some of the most powerful and able criminals. Akiyama sincerely hoped M had taken only the limited files he claimed to have; if he had taken the rest, there was a good chance some of his own had been compromised. He mentally sighed. He couldn't afford to disavow some of his most valuable tools, nor could he afford to rely on those vulnerable to blackmail and conversion. The other email was from M. He had a difficult decision to make; either he could try and take M down, or he could try to partner with him and gain back the records as a sign of good faith. If someone in the group against M currently wants to be the sender of the email, that'd be cool. Otherwise, I'll just have it be a NPC.
  20. Some of my favorite messages come from Hoid in the guise of Wit. The thought that beauty can be found regardless of the situation is a common comcept but one rarely expressed in a manner so profound as the 2 blind men. The idea that novelty is most praised is also definitely a factor in life that Brandon expresses in a uniquely succinct way. Other interesting themes are the conflicts between risky activism and neutral passivism, the way power changes someone on a fundamental level, manipulation as a core of society and all human interaction, and that negative experiences are essential for growth + don't necessitate failure.
  21. Martha Jones is a Truthwatcher. She's very devoted to healing people (Progression), and her emotions are largely hidden, for better or worse (Illumination). She also hides her actions with the Doctor from her family, which is one of the characteristics of a Truthwatcher; the order is said to have been formed entirely by those who never spoke or wrote of what they did, causing frustration for the people around them
  22. Ruin is the patron shard of nuclear fission Devotion is the patron shard of long distance runners Adonalsium is the patron shard of Sanderson books and the Internet (because they're everything )
