You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Sunbird replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Thanks for enlightening me, @Rasarr, @Delightful, and @Alfa. Maybe now I can shake off this feeling of "I'm not a real Sanderfan because I got the KR glyphs confused." -
Okay... WLIU name 15 female authors--any genre, any time period goes!

How old is your niece? For some reason whenever people mention their nieces and nephews, I picture them as like 8 years old or younger by default until someone tells me otherwise. (Probably because I'm 21 and for people my age who have nieces and nephews, they're still pretty young.)

This always happens to me when I'm trying to read a book. Lots of times I'll be sitting on the couch with my book and a family member will come up and start talking at me, and after a few minutes I think the conversation is over because they stop talking, so I go back to reading, and then they continue talking, missing the obvious sign that I'm not paying attention anymore. So I feel obligated to pull my nose out of the book again and say, "Could you repeat that? I wasn't listening" to make myself seem polite. Or I'll be eating my packed lunch in the break room at work, wearing headphones and listening to music and CLEARLY not wanting to be bothered, but some people are completely oblivious and interrupt me anyway. I know I've posted it on this forum like three times already, but here is a relevant video by Julian Smith:

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...

That's not what the people at the Badali Jewelry booth told me when I bought it from them at Salt Lake Comic Con. (Although it IS what their website says...) I'm so confused. Update: Ok so I looked up the page on glyphs on the Coppermind: Glyphs. And there's two that it says are called "Shash," the first one of which is the one on my pin and necklace. When I bought the necklace, the Badali Jewelry people told me it was Kaladin's shash brand (which I think is why I was confused and associated it with Windrunners), but it doesn't match the picture higher up the Coppermind page that's labeled "Kaladin's brands." Can anyone explain to me why there are two different "shash" glyphs? -
Hahaha. That was the perfect sarcastic response! Upvote for you.

I Think you mean a prologue? An epilogue comes at the end of a book.

@lyssie95 not yet. Usually I'm reminded by the act of flipping my calendar over to the new month.

Well, whatever the case may be for what color the glyph is supposed to be, this is what the pin looks like (spoilered for size): I also have a necklace of this glyph, and it's red too. -
If you survive the encounter, you will come away from it gasping, bleeding, and sporting holes in your clothes. Rock's stew is like red licorice.

Bleh. I am sick right now, or I would go too. But West Jordan is like 45 minutes away from me, and the kind of sick I am right now is not conducive to being that far away from home for hours on end. If I can find out how much the Dragon's Keep in Orem will be charging for White Sand, I might go to that signing instead since it's much closer. (And I might be feeling better by Wednesday.)

Binge-read Night Speed by Chris Howard today. I thought it was pretty awesome. The psychedelic cover fits the story perfectly too:

I have finally gotten up to date on this amazing and hilarious webcomic! I didn't dare come in here until now after I peeked in a few weeks ago and saw that y'all were discussing plot points I hadn't gotten to yet. I'm torn about how to feel about Vampire!Durkon. Before it was revealed that Durkon wasn't really in control, I thought it was cool that he was still a good guy after Malack's influence was gone, so the Buffy-esque "Vampire!Durkon is a demon in a dwarf body" twist felt like a little bit of a letdown for me. But now I'm also kind of expecting that the real Durkon is going to prove himself an epic badchull of willpower and take back control of his body from the vampire spirit just in the nick of time.

I haven't attempted to read any graphic novels on my Kindle (I have the cheapest, most basic model), but I imagine it wouldn't be as good as a hardcopy, if only because the Kindle only has a black and white display. Also, the screen isn't big enough to view an entire page of comics and still be able to read the text. (It makes viewing maps a pain too.)

Oh man, I love those birds. <3 Lots of birds are named after their calls... Chickadees say "chicka-dee-dee-dee," Laughing Gulls sound like they're laughing at you, Bobwhite quail say, "bob-WHITE!", a whip-poor-will says, "Whip-po-hor-will," a chuck-will's-widow says its name, an Eastern Wood-pewee says "pee-a-weeee," an Eastern Phoebe says "PHOE-be!", and Gray Catbirds mew like cats. (Can you tell I love birdwatching? XD)

I'm going to have to disagree with this assessment, but because I don't want to generate any more hard feelings than I probably already have by sharing my opinion on this topic, I suggest we drop it.

Okay, let me try to explain what I'm thinking another way. If you have a friend who gets mauled by a dog and afterward your friend is afraid of dogs in general, do you call that a phobia? I don't think so. If a woman gets raped and is thereafter wary of men as a general group, is that a phobia? No. It's fear brought on by past events and the inability to know which dog or which man or which person who calls themselves a Muslim is or isn't going to do something harmful. Your conscious mind might know logically that not all dogs or all men or all Muslims go around attacking people, but it's very hard to supplant an idea that's gotten into your head from experience with an idea that you are trying to teach yourself through mental self-coaching. I don't think that a fear of a general group of people is irrational when you can't immediately distinguish which individuals of that group are dangerous and which aren't.

I would like to clarify something. I specifically used the phase "self-professed Muslims" to indicate that many of the perpetrators of recent terrorist attacks tell everyone they are doing it for reasons in connection with Islam. That does not mean that I think they are actually following the tenets of the religion they claim to belong to. (Similar to how those who claim to be "Mormon" and practice polygamy nowadays are not following the established teachings of actual Mormonism, or how any "Christian" who commits violence against gays doesn't deserve to call themselves a Christian because they are so egregiously violating Jesus's teaching to "love one another.") At no point did I ever associate all followers of Islam with terrorism. See this post I made:

Probably more like a wheezing gasp, like maybe "HrrUUHHHH." This is very true. I met a birdwatcher once who kept saying that a goldfinch's song sounded like "potato chip" to him, and I just couldn't hear it.

I don't know, but I get that reaction a LOT when I wear the pin. I think when people see the red and the sort of webby-looking logo, they just assume it's something familiar like Spider-Man. -

If it makes you feel any better, I think your member title is genius. *hugs* -
Somewhat related: I just discovered that the name Eichmann translates from German to "oak-man."
-
I'm not saying that all Muslims are evil either--just that other people being afraid is a rational response after all the terrorist attacks, and that I think calling it a "phobia" is unjustified. "Once bitten, twice shy," to over-simplify my thinking.

Fantastic series! I hope you enjoy them. And if you do, don't forget to check out all the rest of Rick Riordan's mythology-based books.
