The villagers glared at . He was cornered, back to the wall in a dead end alley. “Running away from us? You must be one of the Spiked.” “I don't think that's how it works,” said. “I just don’t want to die.” “And we know you’re secretly a Thug,” Dive spoke over him. “When did you ever use that strength to help us? Well, we're wise to your tricks now. Prepare to die.” “...yeah, alright.” unwrapped his scarf, revealing a massive pewter spike implanted in the base of his neck. “This what you were looking for?” “Get him!” the villagers rushed forward, and burned pewter. Preservation looked into the future, checking every possibility. All of them were defeats. The Spiked would tear apart Tyrian Falls. It was destined. “Checkmate,” Ruin said in a satisfied voice. The truth was, reflected, the villagers had thought things through. They came prepared to kill a Thug. Their plan wasn’t complicated: surround, stab with pitchforks and spears, and keep him pinned in the middle to bleed out. He juked one of their weapons, snapped off the tip of another, but they just kept coming. A pitchfork pierced him and he wrenched it out of the wielder’s hands, only to careen into another blade behind him. More jabs followed. He struggled, and the points dug deeper. Sure enough, he was pinned down. Even couldn’t overpower a whole village's combined strength. “Guess you caught me,” he admitted, bowing his head. He gave up and waited for the end. “Thanks for getting them all bunched up!” Hail shouted down from a nearby rooftop. "...nevermind," amended. "Backup's here." He knew what to expect, flaring pewter and raising his arms to shield his face. The villagers surrounding him just looked confused in the moments before impact. Hail raised a fat purse of coins in his palm and mimed blowing a kiss, and the coins exploded out, ripping through the crowd. grit his teeth but weathered the onslaught, pewter dulling the pain as coins tore into him. The villagers surrounding him weren’t so lucky. Many of them collapsed, clutching lethal wounds, and the few left standing scattered. “Ow,” said, picking the speartips from his body. “Couldn’t you have tried a little harder to angle some of those away from me?” “Nope,” Hail said, stepping off the rooftop, falling, and slowing at the last second to land gracefully. “You’ll be fine. Thugs are built to last. Anyways, thanks for the assist.” “Anytime,” sighed. “Let’s regroup to deal with the stragglers.” “This is new,” Stick was standing outside the old post office. It looked… different now. “A… night… club?” “The nightclub,” Val corrected proudly. “First, best, and only.” “Looks good,” Stick said, barging in. “This 'nightclub' is under new management. For Ruin!” Some time later, the trio of Spiked met up inside, enjoying drinks. “Koloss are almost here,” Hail said over loud music. “Tyrian will fall,” agreed. “I’ll drink to that,” Stick said. They all raised a glass to toast. In the Coppercloud VIP wing, a pair of nondescript strangers enjoyed their own drinks. If anyone had stopped to think about it, the presence of complete and total strangers in a town of this size might’ve been noteworthy. As it was, in the chaos of the Spiked takeover and impending koloss rampage, people understandably had other things to focus on. “This is good,” Ruin said. “What’s it called?” “That’s an atium bomb,” Val said happily. “I’ll take another.” “You know, in all our countless repetitions, there was never a nightclub before,” Preservation said. “Not once. I wonder what caused this deviation…” “Isn’t it beautiful?” Ruin asked. Preservation huffed. “I suppose it's neat.” “Cheer up,” Ruin said. “You’ll probably do better next time.” “Well played,” Preservation said through gritted teeth. “...but are you sure there’ll be a next time?” he added. “What do you mean?” “Like you said, things are heating up in Luthadel.” “...I thought we had more time.” “Our final confrontation approaches.” “Well, I suppose that’s it then,” Ruin said. “Nice playing with you.” Two gods died, and a new one was born. The Hero of Ages had come. The prophecy was fulfilled. And yet, the two strangers lounging in Scadrial's first nightclub in a small village somewhere didn’t disappear. “...it doesn’t feel any different," Ruin said. "Did you do something?” “I have just as little idea of what’s going on as you.” “I can’t use my Shard,” Ruin hissed. “Me neither.” "...but we're still here. We're supposed to be dead. How?” “If I had to guess, we were too ingrained in our Shards to completely separate from them. An echo stayed behind. A version of us persisted, somewhere, tucked away in the folds of Harmony’s vast mind. That's what we are.” “I wonder if Harmony is aware.” “Probably not.” “I suppose we should keep a low profile to keep it that way.” “Probably.” “Well, what now?” “...how about another round of the game?” “I’ve no objections.” Ruin carefully packed up the pieces, and Preservation carefully laid out different ones, and the game began anew. I decided to roll the RNG results in advance to see if a village win was possible. RNG said the Spiked Mistborn would draw Coinshot powers next, and that any tied vote tomorrow would break in favor of the Spiked, neither of which was good news for the village. See the spectator doc for more details on how that happened. It was fun seeing the village rally right at the end, even if it was destined to end. ...I was going to post the aftermath more punctually, but I was pretty beat on Christmas night and didn't really have a writeup in me. Since the game was already finished, figured I'd give it a little more time to cook. In retrospect I probably could've signalled that a bit better. Well, that's all for now. The villagers thronged outside the burned out manor, prepared to wage war on the Spiked. Weapons honed for fighting off the Koloss without were turned against enemies within. Arguments and counterarguments were presented. The urgency of impending doom granted a clarity of purpose that was often absent. Perhaps this time it would be enough. They stood arrayed against the chosen victim. "," Preservation said. "Must be a pain for mortals to pronounce." "Maybe that's why they all want dead?" Ruin mused. "Doubtful. has been for days now, whereas wanting dead is only a recent development." "You know, maybe I'll borrow some of your kandra and see if their vocal chords can pronounce . Seems like an interesting experiment." "Not without losing control of all your koloss, you won't," Preservation threatened. "Leave out of this." "...It would seem is fighting back." The mistwraith roamed Tyrian Falls, feasting on the flesh of the fallen and growing to alarming proportions. The creature was unnatural, the villagers agreed. It would steal their faces and their souls. It would devour the village whole and leave nothing for the koloss to destroy. It couldn’t be reasoned with, and it certainly couldn’t be fought. The writhing mass absorbed arrows and spat them out like they were a minor annoyance at best. Perhaps it could be tricked, however. There were tales of clever skaa luring away mistwraiths with fresh blood. Perhaps there was truth in them. Preferably one of the Spiked would be the bait, of course. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Dispose of a murderer and make the wraith move on, in one simple act? It was a flawless plan. Rin was chosen, slain, and left outside of town to tempt the wraith away. Fortunately, this plan succeeded at making the monster leave. The mistwraith gained some new, distinctly human bones. Unfortunately, those bones didn’t have any spikes. “Mistwraiths are peaceful creatures,” Preservation said in a pained voice. “Sure, but they don’t know that,” Ruin said. “I mean, look at them. Absolutely horrifying. Honestly disappointing that they aren't real monsters.” @Doc12 has expired! He was a Village Smoker! Welcome to the long dark night of the soul! Ruin took another piece off the board. “Not going your way this time, is it?” he asked. “You’re too used to the old rules.” “Nonsense. I’ve got you just where I want you,” Preservation lied. “You’ve completely tipped your hand, killing so many. The space for you to hide in is thinning out as we speak.” Ruin shrugged. “Yes, but what was I supposed to do? Not kill them?” “It’s not as outlandish as you would think,” Preservation remarked obscurely. Ruin sniffed. “Something’s burning.” “What did you do?” Preservation demanded. “Nothing! I’ve been minding my own business!” “Somehow, I don’t believe that,” Preservation glared down at the plume of smoke rising from the village. The two gods kept arguing as the flames spread. The fire started near the old abandoned manor. The aged wood caught easily. When the villagers approached to get it under control, a massive mistwraith emerged from the fiery hellscape like a vengeful spirit. Many lost their nerve right then and there. And so the inferno kept growing. Though fierce, the flames were not destined to consume Tyrian Falls entirely. Some of the villagers fought valiantly where others had fled. And there was something to be said for the simple fact that some of the architecture in Tyrian Falls wasn’t wooden. The village would live another day. The sole casualty was Coming Later, victim of an unfortunate ‘accident’ during the chaos. Despite trial and tribulation, the Tyrian postal service remained dedicated to delivering messages on time. One such message found its way into people's hands without any return address: @ThatOneWorldhopper has shuffled off the mortal coil! He was a Village Coinshot! The sun rises! "All these silly names," Ruin mused. "Doesn't really make sense, does it? They're all so similar in death." Preservation rolled his eyes. There was only so much waxing poetic about death that a body could take. "That's why mortals take names, obviously," he rebutted. "To make them different. It's something uniquely theirs. Something that still means something even when they're gone." Preservation surveyed the board, thinking. In other parts of the world, other parts of him were acting out a vast and dizzyingly intricate plan. The primordial forces of Ruin and Preservation were clashing constantly, transcending any one point of view. But this part of him was focused wholly on the game. His hand hovered over one piece, then another, wondering which to move. He was down a few pieces, true, but his side kept the material advantage regardless. Positioning and information were the only things that really mattered. "A name is just sound and letters," Ruin said, derailing Preservation's thoughts. "It's a pretty sentiment, sure, but your name living on isn't exactly the same thing as you living on, is it?" "It's a symbol," Preservation insisted. "It matters." "Oh? When I end the world, I promise to leave behind lots of symbols, cross my heart," Ruin said sweetly. "You okay with it then?" "...No." Somebody had piled up a heap of rotting furniture outside the village borders and lit a bonfire. A few of the villagers had gathered around, enjoying a few moments of warmth and respite. It was important to hold onto such things with all that was hanging over their head. Another one of those cryptic messages cropped up all over town. Clearly somebody was quite dedicated to delivering them, and once again successfully evaded all attempts by the villagers to witness the deed. Whoever penned this message, they did not in fact appear to be dead. The enigmatic Tyrian postal service continued to function, come what may. The same could not be said for Kas, who was found pinned to the village's notice board by a spear. Perhaps it was meant to evoke the way the Survivor was murdered by the Lord Ruler? The killer didn't stick around to explain themselves. @Ookla the Counter has been counted out! He was a Village Smoker! The sun rises! It's time for a spot of democractically sanctioned beheading!
