1. I had an idea for a vanilla, although not exactly unpowered. In broad strokes, think along the lines of the mad scientist trope. He goes by Heisenberg, and he built a motivator that makes it impossible to know both his position and velocity vectors at the same time 2. If we went the route where one epic starts out in charge, maybe they are the only high epic in the city? I like this a lot. I’m partial to a smaller city in BC, maybe even an island. But I don’t really mind too much. I like this a lot. I kind of want to give it a more interesting flavor than just generic portals though. Maple maypole Catch and carry Ash and ember Elderberry

As you wish.

What exactly do you call relative morality? More importantly, if you want to pursue a big philosphical discussion on the meaning lf good and evil, it may be better to shoot me a PM so this thread doesn’t get epically derailed.
-
I kind of did: There are probably a few plausible interpretations for their true motives. I’m... Not sure why you wanted to read so much into my use of the word “interpretation” to be honest.
-
Why should this mean I am getting at relative morality? Two people can share the same moral beliefs, and still have differing interpretations on somebody’s motives, or even on the results, because humans tend towards not being omniscient.
-
Why do you assume I would have to be getting at relative morality? *raises eyebrows*
-
I would not say relative morality was quite what I was getting at Also Canada or Europe probably depends on how many characters are migrating from the old RP
-
I am playing around with a character concept that certainly qualifies as a slontze. Although whether it is moral event horizon levels of slontzedom is a matter of interpretation. As a citizen of both, I'd say things could shape up to be interesting in all of the above locations

Actually yes, I am talking about a real-world termination date. For each arc, I am proposing that we would designate a period of maybe two weeks, during which participants would write the conclusion of the story. That should be long enough for everybody to at least summarize what happens to their characters, and possibly follow up later with a more detailed RP if they feel the need to. I concede that scheduling makes this difficult. But I think this will always be an issue when coordinating something for everybody to participate in. An in-world ending date would often be effective, and I definitely appreciate what you did with the Corvallis arc. My concern is that an in-world end date doesn’t always arrive, as in the case of Corvallis. If people start posting less, the ending is postponed, which I don’t think is desirable. Ultimately though, if this actually got off the ground enough for there to actually be multiple arcs, I don’t see why we couldn’t field-test several approaches to this.
-
Well I read a couple pages of Corvallis. I very much approve of a character-driven plot. However, I also have a suggestion for this. Take what I say with a grain of salt because I don’t know as much about it as most of you all do. But what if, on the creation of a city arc, we all agreed on a termination date? (We could also do this with major factions in a city if participants wanted to) I think a little something to push development and conclusions could help a lot. I noticed in the old RP that lots of really fantastic stuff happened, but it was difficult for there to be endings. And consequentially, change was difficult (you all still had moments where you did a really stellar job of this, though). I think it might be more fun if we agreed on a fixed time window to actually write the epic conclusions that the RP arcs deserve. Plus, that means new settings can be opened up as older ones are concluded. Or, if a setting is particularly well-liked, a new arc could be opened up in the aftermath of the last arc, possibly with a timeskip in between.

You know, I never really got into this thing. Pretty sure it's hayday was before my time anyhow. But see, it looks like it's starting it up again... And I figure, to properly reboot, you're gonna need some new blood, yeah? Beyond the pinned threads, is there anything in particular I ought to read through to get a sense for what exactly this is?

Surrounded by a thick haze of mist, along the crumbling, decrepit wall of a vacant alleyway situated in the Cracks, a doorway opened. A figure strolled out of it, bedecked in a mistcloak, whose tassels were oddly dyed in shades of deep cerulean and malachite green. The passage disappearing in a flash of light behind him. He wandered through the Cracks for some time, conspicuously ignoring a map crumpled in his right hand, whistling in perfect tune. . . . Sometime early in the morning, the same figure knocked twice on a fancy looking door on the other side of Luthadel. Nobody answered. He reached for a key, only to remember that he had lost it. He mumbled something under his breath, fishing a reed from his pocket and sticking it in the keyhole, which opened with a click shortly thereafter. Continuing to whistle, he walked down the hallway, up a flight of stairs, and into a sitting room. In the center of the room was a crackling fire. In the corner of the room was a large cage, which contained a mistwraith. Scattered around the room were armchairs, one of which contained his employer's agent. "Jay," Dromea spoke, looking up from a book and a thick pair of spectacles. "You're late." "Yes," he nodded apologetically. "Got lost." "For a week and a half?" she asked, incredulous. "It's a really long story..." Jay glanced nervously at the caged mistwraith. Those creatures always gave him the heebie jeebies. "Anyway, isn't that a map you're holding?" "Don't read much." "...you run a library," she said, glaring at him. "Yep, I do," Jay said, declining to elaborate. The language in these parts was just plain weird. "I'm sorry about the holdup, I got here as soon as I could after everything blew up." "You disappeared." "Like I said, everything blew up. I was kind of stuck someplace far away." "Do you at least have what we asked for?" she asked, with a hint of urgency. "I do," Jay affirmed, procuring a pair of small metal spikes and handing them to her. Wordlessly, she took them and placed the spikes on top of a neatly folded pile of clothing. She walked over towards the mistwraith, and dropped the bundle into its cage. Jay looked baffled for a moment, then his eyes widened as the creature reacted to the bundle, rapidly reshaping itself. "Jay, it's time you met your employer." In mere moments, a human form stood where the mistwraith once did. "Thank you," it said to Dromea, sounding relieved, flashing a smile. It glanced about the room, eyes settling on Jay. "I am RoPaan. I presume you retrieved my blessings?" Jay stared blankly at it, not understanding. "The spikes," the creature explained. "O-Oh. Yes," Jay replied. What the colors was he looking at? "Excellent. We may have another job for you." . . . Jay is apparently insisting on participating. You can sign me up.

Mid-Range Game 29: A Midsummer Night with No Moon
DrakeMarshall replied to DrakeMarshall's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Well, it's been an interesting run. First, thank you again to Randuir, who helped refine the game's rules, and handled a lot of difficult things in this game. Now, some retrospective thoughts on the game. -I was pleased by this game's activity policy, which was a slight refinement from what I used in QF30. I may continue to tweak how it works, but after using more or less the same policy in two games, I'm pretty decided that any future games I run will also include a variant of this policy. -The balance between eliminators and village was approximately correct. Both sides had some very powerful roles. The eliminators were unlucky to lose Cyphus on the first day (if Cyphus had been alive just a cycle or two longer, they could quite possibly have been able to kill all four lovers in a single action), and certain villagers whose names have been erased from time played fantastically well. -Some roles should have been a little harder to confirm. I intended for certain roles to be highly claimable, and gave the eliminator team a set of abilities that severely punished role-claiming. However, I also intended for this game to have a much large number of vanillas. In a few cases, I would make certain roles more ambiguous. -The Cthaeh was weaker than it could have been. Balancing an omniscient role is hard. I deliberately erred on the side of making the Cthaeh difficult, because it's effectively a serial killer. But if this game ever ran a second time, there would be slightly fewer restrictions on the Cthaeh, and it would also not be quite as difficult to create cross-aligned lovers. That's all I can think of to say right now.- 406 replies

Long Game 46: A Land War in Asia

Mostly instinct, from the tone of the writeup and the description of Randuir dying. Deceasing. Done for. Reading too far into that sort of thing is generally a bad idea, and I'm certainly not trying to, but my gut is saying Randuir will flip as village. Virtuous. Veracious.- 862 replies

My lynch suggestion has been overlooked! Overshadowed! Omitted! Inconceivable! Impossible! Incomprehensible! Even so, I have a tradition to uphold, uplift, and undertake, passed down by Eternum. I shall lynch all those who be lynched! So, Randuir. My name is... Er... What is my name? ... My name is Rob Indy Banks. Long Game 46: A Land War in Asia
DrakeMarshall replied to Steeldancer's topic in Sanderson Elimination
It’s not a perfect metric, but this game I have running statistics on each player’s post count and references to known eliminators. Players who have a reasonable number of posts and a particularly low percentage of mentions of an eliminator while the elim was alive are considered distancing. Elenion and Bort were mutually distancing each other to a significant degree, which is part of why I accused Bort. Do you see, savvy, surmise what I am getting at?- 862 replies

Long Game 46: A Land War in Asia
DrakeMarshall replied to Steeldancer's topic in Sanderson Elimination
1. I don’t necessarily disagree with your conclusion that Randuir is evil, but I will say there are some reasons to defend a villager other than pocketing. Defenses are often seen as alignment indicative so there’s a lot of fun strategy and WIFOM there. 2. Elenion by his own admission has a relatively agressive playstyle. It is hard to tell for sure, but my intuition says his defense of Straw was actually an accusation on the attackers, masquerading as a defense. This theory is supported by the fact that Elenion criticized the vote on Straw after it was retracted, meaning the primary intent almost certainly wasn’t a serious defense. Interesting. Why do you refer to your eventual decision as “the lesser of two evils”? You have correctly assumed that I would be open to the idea of a tie. Alvron convinced me that ties are great fun. I do believe Walin is the lynch with the best odds at being correct, however. And since this is not the KKC intro, silence is not particularly entertaining. So, if you want a tie, what say you to creating a tie that includes Walin? I finally read the iocane rules and three-way ties are allowed. EDIT: @Sart @randuir @Jondesu The fact that Elenion’s defense on Straw happened after the vote was retracted should mostly invalidate the case on Straw. At which point, that lynch basically becomes a contribution crusade against an inactive who has now shown up and started posting. I therefore invite you to consider moving over to the Walin lynch, and creating a tie with Randuir. Basically, I just want to see an Iocane scenario, but I don’t want one with Straw because I’m pretty convinced Straw is village.- 862 replies

Long Game 46: A Land War in Asia
DrakeMarshall replied to Steeldancer's topic in Sanderson Elimination
1. On the contrary, you have not proven yourself to be a buffoon of the highest order. Double meanings are a strange inversion of synonyms, and therefore I choose to interpret the invocation of a double meaning as a very profound social commentary on fashion, fads, frivolity. 2. A fair point, proposition, punch-line. Questions are good, great, gainful. 3. Your mileage may vary on what I deem "alignment-indicative" but yes, you are correct, comprehending, clear-sighted. 4. In general, you are quite right. That's how most people do analysis. In fact, that's often how I do analysis. I am trying something different, distinct, divergent. I am trying to be concise. Compact. Condensed.- 862 replies

Long Game 46: A Land War in Asia
DrakeMarshall replied to Steeldancer's topic in Sanderson Elimination
1. I said nothing about this game in particular; the behavior you are describing is always alignment indicative, much more so than being properly inactive. Choosing not to participate when one manifestly has the time to do so is dubious, doubtful, and dicey. 2. Dislike is a strong word, but I do find that behavior more typical of an eliminator than a villager. Do you have an alternative suggestion for how to use votes? As you recently wrote, "this is the best time to weigh in on suspicion." Would you like to rethink, review, or revise that statement? 3. I didn't ask you not to vote. That is inconceivable. Implausible. Incogitable. I do what I can to encourage everybody to vote at all times Voting is unequivocally a good behavior, but a vote without a suspicion backing it this late in the game is alignment indicative. 4. I gave three distinct and succinct points about why I think one of them is an elim, four if you count gut read as a reason. I don't really have anything to add; I would just be using highly fashionable synonyms to restate, rehash, and recapitulate. If I am sufficiently entertained you have my word of honor I will find a different eliminator to lynch- 862 replies
