The way I understood it is that you immediately lose the benefits but I cannot confirm that as solid fact.

I am not so sure. The idea of a splinter sliver has been explained as an "expanding" of the soul. The soul of the Returned who gives up their Divine Breath would already be "stretched" by holding that much Investiture so I think they would last longer in the Cognitive Realm than a normal person. That is, of course, only my opinion - I am unaware if Brandon has definitely answered this question. edit: fixed a typo that natc pointed out

IIRC, seven (7) of the original ten (10) Honorblades were in Shinovar. Szeth had one (now it is most likely in Dalinar's possession though probably unbonded) which means six (6) remain in Shinovar. Taln (the real Herald) has one (1); his own. That leaves two (2) Honorblades unaccounted for - or, at least, I cannot account for them. Anyone have ideas/knowledge of where the two (2) missing Honorblades are?

Thinking a bit more about Hoid and Vasher it seems Vasher realizes that Wit is Dust. Does Hoid know Zahel is Vasher? I wonder if anything they are doing is connected or if it is more of a "Oh hi, fancy seeing you on Roshar. My, these ugly-lizard-crab things sure are something!"

I did not remember that about Hoid and Nalthis but it makes sense. Thanks for the info! Also, I love the idea of Szeth being placed in a position of defending Dalinar. I am not sure if Dalinar and/or Kaladin would be willing to accept Szeth after all he has done. That situation could create some dramatic tension.

1| page 1050 of the original WoR Kindle edition Kaladin arrives in Uruthiru with Szeth's Honorblade. As far as I know this scene is the last we see of the Honorblade. I am assuming Kaladin left the Honorblade with Dalinar which then leads me to the interesting tidbit - when the Stone Shamans learn of Szeth's "death" how will they go about recovering the Honorblade from Dalinar? Szeth mentioned at some point (forgot to mark the spot) that his people were not worried about recovering the blade after his death. Could this be a significant conflict in the coming third book? Will the Shin send powerful warriors wielding the other Honorblades? Silent assassins? Proto-radiants of some kind? 2| page 976 of the original WoR Kindle edition "Kaladin stood in the rain. “Do you know where the King’s Wit is?” “That fool, Dust? Not here, blessedly. Why?”" This scene is Kaladin speaking to Zahel while Kaladin is recovering from his injuries and wrestling with his conscience over the plot against Elhokar. Note how Zahel (Vasher) refers to Hoid as "Dust". Hoid and Vasher seem to have met in the past. The name "Dust" seems full of meaning but I cannot really think of what that meaning might be in relation to Nalthis or Roshar. Thoughts?

Sanderson is notorious for providing false information via misinformed in-world characters. Unless there is a WoB saying you cannot store attributes while sleeping I would say that it is more than likely Sazed was wrong. Another possibility: the medallions are different for some reason.

As a primer, the language of the Final Empire/Elendel Basin are French based while the Southern Scadrians have a Germanic base. Good luck!

theory Active and passive uses of Investiture
CaptainRyan replied to Oversleep's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Building on that "Kinetic" or "Active" idea - perhaps the lightning of Stormform is "Innate" or "Passive"; it does not require fuel because Stormform has an innate ability to draw forth the Investiture needed to cast lightning bolts. If Stormform has other abilities, however, they might require the active use of stormlight. Maybe? -
Assuming a ready/steady supply of whatever Investiture is needed for my abilities (stormlight, metals etc.) then I would probably choose: 1| Soulcasting - I would be able to create whatever I need; food, money, etc. 2| Gravitation surge - FLYING! Other options I strongly lean towards: Seer Misting (Allomantic atium) - Atium would allow me to survive nearly any situation (except a fight with Vin!) Allomantic steel + Allomantic iron - FLYING! Awakening - Depending on the number of breaths I started with this might be one of my two choices Feruchemical steel + Allomantic steel - Compounding steel is almost like FLYING! Allomantic zinc + Feruchemical zinc - Compounding mental speed while also being an emotional Allomancer would open up a lot of options. Not to mention that I would be so good at video games while compounding Feruchemical zinc! Allomantic atium + Feruchemical atium - Functional immortality! Ok, ok, I will stop there. There are just so many good combos!

Even if we assume that there were literally not enough Feruchemists to provide the Inquisitors with Feruchemical gold and Feruchemical steel (ignoring that many, if not all, Inquisitors had Feruchemical gold before Ruin was released) there was still at least a single Inquisitor (the one we saw fighting Elend and Vin at the beginning of HoA) that did have both Allomantic steel and Feruchemical steel. We saw the Inquisitor use both. If I was Ruin and I only had a single Inquisitor with both Allomantic steel and Feruchemical steel I definitely would not just throw it away in a pointless battle against two Mistborn. edit: ninja'd by IndigoAjah; were you compounding Feruchemical steel by any chance? double edit: Indigo, when you say at least two, you mean Marsh as the second right?
-
Yeah, that hits right close to the core of my suspicion: Brandon did not take Compounding in to account while writing HoA. Honestly, I can accept that. For all of his awesomeness, and he is significantly more awesome than most everyone haha, he is going to slip up here and there. I wanted to ask him just to make sure I had not forgotten or missed an important point but I am 100% ok with it being something that was overlooked.
-
While I have never considered that possibility I would have to ask "Why would he NOT know how to do it"? He is both one of the two shards responsible for interacting with Scadrial and creating the Metallic Arts and he spent a thousand years observing Rashek compound. On top of that he is a Shard of Adonalsium and that bestows incredible powers of cognition, understanding and near-omniscience (for the local area). I think I would find the answer being "Ruin did not know how to compound." even more unsatisfying than "Compounding was too hard for Ruin to teach the Inquisitors."
-
Hmm, if that is the explanation Brandon gives then I guess that is the explanation but... it seriously leaves me unfulfilled haha. A god that could control the actions of 15+ Inquisitors was incapable of teaching even a single Inquisitor (which, mind you, are experienced in both Allomantic and Feruchemical use) how to compound over the course of two years? That just does not sit right with me.

Thanks to everyone, so far, who has responded to my previous list of questions. It is so wonderful to have access to such knowledgeable Cosmere folk. Khriss could probably learn a lot from all of you! I would like to reply to a few of the responses with a follow up question/thought: Hahaha, I think my question was unclear! I should definitely not attempt to give commands to awakened objects! But, IndigoAJah, you get to the heart of what I want to know - is it possible, given how short/simple commands need to be, to truly create a level IV biochromatic entity that follows the command exactly as you would want it to? If Vasher had had a clearer mental/emotional/spiritual understanding of "Destroy evil" when he gave the command or if he had used slightly different words would that have "fixed" Nightblood or is the act of creation simply too complex for mortals to accomplish (more or less) "perfectly"? We know the Inquisitors hunted down most/all of the Feruchemists in Terris (and possibly the Final Empire). We know the Inquisitors were hunting metal born as well. I imagine Ruin was guiding their efforts and that it was relatively easy for Ruin to locate metal born for the Inquisitors. This implies that the Inquisitors in HoA had spiked themselves with lots of powers. On top of that we know that at least one Inquisitor, the one from the beginning of HoA, has both Allomantic steel and Feruchemical steel. On top (topper? more top?) of that, I think it is safe to say that Ruin could have taught the Inquisitors compounding. Knowing all (or guessing some) of that it begs the question of why the Inquisitors did not use compounded Feruchemical steel to spike Elend.

Reading these I got the impression that these words are from the High Spren or, maybe, the Stormfather. While I think the Terris idea is intriguing I highly doubt it is correct.

So, I almost started my own thread about questions but I saw this one and decided to post my questions here. I keep a Google doc where, whenever I have a question I would like to ask Brandon pop in to my head, I write them down. I thought I would let the 17th Shard take a crack at answering them first so I that I do not waste Brandon's time and also so I do not waste a precious opportunity to gather more info. Also, I apologize in advance if these questions were asked/answered earlier - 64 pages of Q&A (on this thread alone!) were a bit intimidating to go through. Without further ado - the questions! 1. Who would win in an arm wrestling match: pewter flaring thug or someone wearing shardplate? 2. Could a Kandra bond a shardblade? 3. Each Scadrian is said to contain a piece of Preservation: does this mean that as the population of Scadrial increases the strength of Preservation decreases? (Same question for Nalthians/Endowment via Breaths) 4. Is it possible to create a level IV Biochromatic entity that does not twist the meaning of its command? 5. Does the Vessel affect the Shard's intent? E.g. did Leras have an affect on what Preservation preserved? Or how the Shard viewed the concept of preservation? With the idea of “preserving” being so subjective how is that Intent interpreted? 6. Do aluminum bullets suffer the same ricochet effect when passing through time bubbles? 7. Would a shredder bullet (it explodes/shreds on impact and puts a ton of fragments into the body) made of aluminum decrease or defeat the power of Feruchemical (gold) healing? 8. Did you mean to make Feruchemical steel so powerful? 8. Why didn’t the Inquisitors, or Marsh, use compounded Feruchemical steel against Vin and Elend; especially in light of Ruin’s desire to spike Elend? 9. Is it possible to blend Hemalurgic spikes so that multiple powers could be stolen from a single person? I.e. using a single spike made of a variety of metals could more than a single power be stolen from a Mistborn? 10. Is it possible to blend multiple charged Hemalurgic spikes into a single spike that provides a variety of powers? i.e. Similar to how the Bands of Mourning were a single object. 11. If you spiked yourself with the Bands of Mourning would you gain all of the powers therein? 12. Vasher was known as Kalad and he is also known to have gone to Roshar before the Manywar. Is Kaladin’s name based on Kalad’s in some way? I.e. Do the people of Roshar have some sort of cultural remembrance of a historical/mythological figure known as Kalad (or some variation of that name)? 13. If someone has a metal mind surgically implanted in them then does that count as a “spike” in terms of Harmony/Ruin being able to influence/control a person or do only hemalurgically placed spikes count? A possible example of this “accidentally” happening was when Marsh pushed Sazed’s metal minds into him during their fight near the Well of Ascension. 14. Could a Drab (someone from Nalthis who has given up their breath) use a Southern Scadrian medallion? 15. Could a Radiant’s spren form itself into a bow and fire a “shardarrow”? When/if guns are introduced/developed on Roshar could the spren shape itself into a gun and fire a “shardbullet”? Edit - found this from the most recent Jordancon: Q: A bow, for example? A: They could create, probably...Well, let’s RAFO that one, I’ll show you what’s going to be happening. 16. Could a Shard refuse to fuel a magic user? E.g. Could Preservation have cut off the flow of investiture to an Allomancer while that Allomancer was attempting to burn their metal? 17. How do you resolve issues where you, as an author, want to write certain ideas/characters/plots but you think your fans might not enjoy the direction you want to go? (The impetus for this question comes from some of the pushback that sprung up on the 17th Shard site, among other places, over the infamous “Wayne” chapters.) 18. If Sazed continues to hold only Preservation and Ruin will he eventually be overwhelmed by the Intents of his shards like Ati was or is he protected due to the opposite Intents? If he is protected, is there any other long-term impact - e.g. he will eventually become unable to act due to the conflicting Intents?
-
This is how I understood it as well. My headcanon is that Miles was burning gold that was not part of a metalmind; e.g. maybe he had ingested some flakes earlier just for this purpose? Or perhaps he can burn portions of a not-completely-filled gold metalmind?

I found a couple of small mistakes in well of ascension
CaptainRyan replied to king of nowhere's topic in Mistborn
Nice catches. I know for newer books there are pinned typo lists that the unstoppable Peter Ahlstrom checks but for an older work like this... well, you might be able to tweet them to Peter for when they do the 10th Anniversary edition (which is only in a year or two eh?). Does anyone here, mods or otherwise, know a good way to get these corrections to the right person? -
Favorite Cosmere Moments--Songs included
CaptainRyan replied to ZotarDragonSlayer's topic in Cosmere Discussion
While I am not sure if this song matches the scene very well I do always think of Vin's fight against the Inquisitors when she is Ascending when I hear "Paradise" by Coldplay. I think the song was playing in the background during one of my rereads? Or it might have been when I was traveling and was listening to music to block out the noise while doing a reread. Either way, it is like Pavlov's bell for me haha. Also, I just finished watching "One Punch Man" and I think the instrumental of the theme song would be an excellent candidate for Kelsier's fight with the Inquisitor. I would love to see a well-animated music video that depicts that particular scene. -
Why would Radiants, with the ability to manifest shardplate in the physical realm, be limited to manifesting shardplate? If they can manifest plate then why not other things?
-
Just a small correction Argel but we will get "the Lost Metal" (Mistborn Era 2 book 4 - the last Wax & Wayne novel) before the end of SA1-5. While I believe the most recent thing I read is that SA:3 is out in 2017 and "the Lost Metal" is out in 2018 I could not find substantiation for that - I did, however, find this. Peter, in December of 2014, was estimating a 2017 but I think that has been bumped back one year so Brandon can finish SA:3. The most recent State of the Sanderson also mentions "the Lost Metal" as coming out "soonish" but does not provide a date.

I believe we have a WoB that Rosharans are more disease immune (on Roshar) than is generally normal due to the small bits of stormlight people have. I also think on Nalthis, with everyone having a Breath, there would an advantage over regular humans as we see that Drabs have a reduced resistance to disease. Therefore, I would imagine Khriss was remarking on the improved medical care as the Southern Scadrians do not have the Basin. IIRC, the Wax & Wayne books take place roughly at the point where Stormlight Archive book 5 ends - which means Scadrians have early 1900s medical technology versus Rosharans/Nalthians having... erm, 500s(?) medical tech and Sel-people (Selians? Selenese? Super Selians?!) possibly having progressed further technologically but I am honestly not sure where Sel is in the timeline.

I would imagine that Harmony is more powerful than any moon... erm, space station. The partial power of Preservation was enough for Rashek to move the entire planet - Sazed (Harmony) has the full power of Preservation and Ruin; crunching up a space station or deflecting a laser beam is probably (relatively) easy for him. Otoh, what if someone built a massive asteroid entirely out of aluminium and launched that at Scadrial? Could Harmony stop/deflect/destroy a massive aluminium kinetic energy weapon? Oh, and uhhh, on topic, I think Odium is definitely bidding his time with Harmony. A direct attack on an unknown Vessel that wields two Shards of Adonalsium seems... ill-advised. Odium did not make it this long, and shatter so many Shards, by being hasty or unprepared.

If Kelsier become a full-blown villain I will be pretty disappointed/upset. Kelsier is an anti-hero imo, not a villain. That being said, Sanderson might have been doing some foreshadowing by having Uncle Ladrian (Mr. Set) talk to Wax about how Wax would have hunted the Survivor's crew and imprisoned them. A hero in one setting might just be a villain in another, no?
