As I pondered the significance of why water fountains are always near bathrooms I had a small epiphany. When my wife and I have children I believe I will answer many of their questions with a simple acronym: LAFO - live and find out. Perhaps I will also print out some LAFO cards for the really good questions! Also, GAFO - google and find out will be used from time to time as well I think.

The walking group consists of green and tan glowing shardplate and is announced by the scout as Windrunners and Stone Wards. Then, a bit later, blue glowing shardplate Radiants drop in from the sky. Seeing as the green ones are the Windrunners I think that only leaves the Skybreakers as flying Radiants. Source: Chapter 52 of the Way of Kings. I reread the chapter after seeing OP's question. Please feel free to correct me though if I am making a silly mistake! edit: As noted by Pathfinder, I completely goofed on the Orders. Please disregard this post. Thanks again to Pathfinder for catching this!

So, how does that work with Ettmetal? Is the intent provided by the initial Metalborn? What about Ettmetal that is activated with a priming cube? Does the intent pass from the Metalborn to the primer to the Ettmetal? For a machine the "Intent" could be provided by the creator of the machine. I.e. The machine was created by a person with the Intent of making a machine to mimic Allomantic/Feruchemical abilities?

theory An Possible Explanation for Taravangian's Diagram
CaptainRyan replied to DrakeMarshall's topic in Stormlight Archive
Unless he was trying to gather as many people as possible. If he is the ruler of everyone then, theoretically, he would be in a better position to get everyone going to the "safe space". (Yes, that is a joke about safe spaces) -
Wait, I thought it was Dalinar who wrote the numbers. Am I misremembering? I thought that for one of the highstorms only Dalinar was in the room and then they discovered the writing still. Is that incorrect?
-
Based on Kaladin's experience with Syl it seems as if breaking the Oaths you make is what "kills" the spren by forcibly breaking the Nahel bond the Knight Radiant shares with their spren. In Dalinar's visions we see Windrunners "fly" (fall with style) so we know they still have access to the Surges which means they have not, yet, fully broken their Oaths. So, the act of dropping their shardblades and shardplate does not, necessarily, kill their spren but rather if their actions violate their Oaths then the spren is killed. I hope that helps clear things up. Oh, and we do not, yet, know why the Radiants chose to abandon their Oaths. So, I guess we will have to RAFO! edit: As noted below by Pathfinder I completely goofed on which orders were present. I apologize for the confusion and thanks to Pathfinder for catching my mistake.

WoB: Word of Brandon. It is the acronym used on the forum when you are quoting something Brandon said at a signing etc. WoR: Words of Radiance. The second book in the Stormlight Archive series. A lot of the time people will abbreviate book titles in their post.

*chuckles nervously* Ahem. Of course. I meant to say you would come off as a genius. I would merely appear as someone with the good taste to support a genius when I recognize them!

I believe they do not die of old age but, eventually, they choose to pass on.

IIRC, Brandon was explaining why TLR's method of Atium compounding was not true immortality due to there being a cap on how much you can compound. Brandon then went on to say something about how if you knew how to modify your Connection to birth time/ age you could obtain functional immortality by being able to manipulate your age that way. I do not have that WoB saved but I will try and find it to post here. If anyone else has a link to it that would great. Oh, and as to Hoid, I have no idea if that is how Hoid is immortal though it probably is not a bad guess imo.

Sorry, I was not meaning to be argumentative. I was just trying to cover other possibilities. In my read throughs of BoM is always found the suit color changing to be odd and I am, tentatively, a fan of the subtle Awakening concept. I am not, however, ruling out the possibility that Brandon is just screwing with us haha

Atium compounding has a hard upper limit. It does not allow for immortality but, instead, merely a longer life span.1. Breaths 2. Elantris 3. Messing with your Connection 4. Being a dragon (?) Those are the three sources of immortality that I know of in the Cosmere. #4 is a guess.

While I certainly am ok with the idea that Adonalsium was somehow complicit in, or at least had foreknowledge of, its own impending Shattering I am not sure how I feel about the idea that Adonalsium allowed itself to be Shattered in order to give sixteen people the ability to hold 1/16 (or less) of its power. Especially because those powers would eventually overwhelm their Vessels and cause massive amounts of pain and suffering. As to the LDS doctrine angle I believe Brandon has said that he does not consciously decide to incorporate elements of LDS doctrine into his works. That being said, as someone who is Mormon, I do see a lot of parallels between certain elements of Brandon's books and "Mormon-y" things haha. Brandon does, however, include elements from a variety of ancient/modern earth cultures, religions, concepts etc. so it is certainly not far-fetched to imagine that some of those elements are Judeo-Christian themed (Adonai and Shinvar to use your examples).

There are definitely a lot of gaps in what we know about how healing with Investiture works but, in my opinion, very, very few people would view their allergies as anything other than an annoyance/something to be fixed. Stormlight/Feruchemical gold would, imo, heal people of their allergies unless they somehow viewed their allergies as deeply, irrevocably connected to their Identity. Kaladin's brands not healing is an example of someone who is convinced, at a Cognitive/Spiritual(?) level, that he IS a slave. That he deserves those brands and that they will always be him. (Again, emphasizing that this is simply my interpretation of the situation and not canon). I doubt anyone feels that strongly about their allergies haha. As to your personal musing:

I believe it is mentioned in Shadows of Self that there are Kandra living normally among the population and own homes, businesses etc. I could be misremembering what was said and drawing far too unfounded conclusion from it but VenDell, or another Kandra, could have a home in the city stocked with things Kandra need. We have seen Awakening do things very quickly and immediately change something from its original color to grey but it might be possible to have a slow-acting Awakening command that gradually drains the color of an object. I have no proof to offer for this concept. I also have no idea what sort of command VenDell could have used that would do this. So, basically, I am making all of this up on the off-chance that it is correct and I come out looking like some kind of Sanderson-genius.

New Information On AonDor Intitiation.
CaptainRyan replied to Blightsong's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Oh, now this is a thought provoking question! If a unified Sel occurred would that erase or weaken certain magic systems at the expense of others or would it spread each magic system around the globe so that AonDor would work at full strength everywhere, Forgery too etc.? -
Writing Principles in Words of Radiance
CaptainRyan replied to mwalton's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I am not a writer myself (other than these posts and, you know, obligatory ranting on social media) but one thing that really stuck out to me in Words of Radiance was pacing. Compared to the slow crawl of the Way of Kings (which is tied for my favorite Sanderson book btw) Words of Radiance felt like a runaway train speeding downhill with several Coinshots behind the train using Nicroburst-powered steel pushes to make it all that much faster! I was definitely unprepared for what I felt was an abrupt change of pace between the two books. My first reaction to Words of Radiance was slightly more negative due to this. (Still loved the book overall but less than the Way of Kings). Obviously, this was due to my own expectations and is not directly Brandon's fault but, as an author yourself, I would like to recommend considering the pacing of both the current book you are writing and, if that book is part of a series, how it stacks up with the other books in the series.- 1 reply

Brandon Sanderson's Books
CaptainRyan replied to KnightRadiant's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Out of curiosity, is "the Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss your overall fantasy #1? As for me, I read, as best I can remember, the books in the following order: 1. Mistborn era 1 2. Warbreaker 3. Elantris 4. the Way of Kings everything else was "as released". My favorite single book by Sanderson is either the Way of Kings or Mistborn: the Final Empire. -
New Information On AonDor Intitiation.
CaptainRyan replied to Blightsong's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
It was from googling "dominion definition" and then I just copy/pasted the results. Also, I think you are making an important point in distinguishing between the two. I honestly did not realize the nuances that existed but I find myself agreeing with your explanation of why the Shard "Dominion" might not be focused on dominating. I was mainly responding, somewhat pedantically, to the earlier assertion that the two words "aren't even related". Sorry for being a pedant. -
Wayne Disapproval Thread (Potential Wayne-related spoilers)
CaptainRyan replied to aeromancer's topic in Mistborn
Two things: 1) It is ridiculous how much I love being called "Captain" Ryan hahaha 2) That is an excellent point about Wayne and MeLann. Great observation! -
I would guess that the first time a Ferring/Feruchemist taps health (after storing of course) their allergies would be healed completely and never bother them again. So, perhaps, for that first time they are storing health it might reduce allergy related symptoms?

Is there truly a reference in the books about a Parshendi hitting a section of Shardplate three times and shattering it? IIRC, that "rule" only applies to Shardblades/weapons swung by Shardplate wearers.

Fixed.

Or, Gavilar was a better fighter than those two Shardbearers in Jah Keved. Gavilar had spent years fighting a war of unification while wearing Shardplate so he was probably one of the more experienced plate wearers at the time. Also, if anything, after the fight with Gavilar, Szeth goes through a long period of not fighting/ fighting garbage opponents so I would argue that his skills might have atrophied a bit from when he had fought Gavilar. While I do not have a solid WoB to back up my claim I think it is not unreasonable to assume that an experienced Shardplate wearer can channel the strength of Shardplate into speed. That much strength, that is not muscle mass like Feruchemy, basically guarantees faster movement and, once a Shardplate wearer has experience, they would be much faster than your average fighter. Basically, if Gavilar was normal human speed there would have been no way for him to punch Szeth. The difference in normal human speed, combined with Szeth's expertise in close combat would have made it impossible for a regular fellow to land that solid of a blow. IMO of course haha
